Are Your Canker Sores Painful?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by: Taylor Clarke

Nearly everyone has experienced the discomfort of canker sores at some point in their life and understand how these little sores can be a source of great pain. While doctors and dentists remain puzzled over the exact cause of canker sores it is commonly believed they are brought about by a vitamin deficiency, stress or allergies.

Despite their miniature size, they can produce a lot of pain. Here are a few facts on canker sores:

1) They commonly appear on the inside of the mouth including on the cheeks, the inside of the lips and under the tongue.

2) While typically small red sores, they may appear with a white coating over the entire sore.

3) Some medical professionals believe the susceptibility of canker sores may be inherited, but research indicates they are not contagious.

4) They cannot be passed along by drinking from the same glass or by kissing.

There are three distinct types of canker sores including minor sores that generally last three to 14 days and deep ulcer canker sores that can last from three to six weeks. Both types will usually heal on their own once they have run their course. Possibly the worst type is the herpetiform sores which appear as small cuts close together. They are not a sign of, nor a prelude to herpes. With this type of canker sore a visit to the doctor or dentist may be needed for confirmation and treatment.

About the only thing a person can do to deal with the sores while they heal is practice good dental hygiene, including using a toothpaste containing only natural ingredients. Many types of toothpaste include irritants such as sodium lauryl sulfate that can irritate existing cankers as well as damage the lining of the mouth, increasing the possibility of them appearing.

Supplements of vitamin C and the B complex have also been shown to help in the healing process and if caused by vitamin deficiency may help prevent canker sores from forming. For severe pain, topical treatments, usually used on infants during teething can offer short-term relief from the pain. With more severe outbreaks, a doctor may also prescribe medications to help heal and prevent the spread of the sores. Be sure to follow the directions as some of these medications are formulated to be swallowed and others should be spit out once rinsing is complete.

When the mouth is afflicted with canker sores, it is advised to avoid certain foods that can irritate the lesions. Crunchy foods such as raw vegetables and chips can further aggravate the ulcer-like formations and spicy foods can also cause unnecessary irritation during periods of canker sore outbreaks. If a person chews gum frequently, it is only a matter of time that they will inadvertently bite the inside of their cheek and if it happens to hit a canker sore, the pain will be dramatic.

The best course of action for canker sores is taking steps to prevent them from forming. Using all natural dental products such as ones containing baking soda with good dental hygiene can help keep the mouth clean and avoiding certain foods. While there is no guarantee that sores will not reappear, practicing prevention may reduce the chances of the canker sores from appearing.

That Snake In The Grass May Be Your Best Hope For Stroke

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

That snake in the grass may well help someone you lose with a stroke related disorder.

Stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurological damage or even death if not promptly diagnosed and treated. It is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States and industrialized European nations. It is predicted that stroke will soon become the leading cause of death worldwide.

The symptoms of stroke can be quite heterogeneous, and patients with the same cause of stroke can have widely differing handicaps. Conversely, patients with the same clinical handicap can in fact have different underlying causes.

Called ancrod, the fibrinogen depleting drug is an enzyme derived from the venom of the Malayan pit viper snake. This pit viper snake venom has been found to be a most potent natural anticoagulant. It is crucial that the drug which also acts to break up the clot and reduce blood viscosity be administered promptly within hours of the onset of the stroke.

The cause of stroke is an interruption in the blood supply, with a resulting depletion of oxygen and glucose in the affected area. This immediately reduces or abolishes neuronal function, and also initiates an ischemic cascade which causes neurons to die or be seriously damaged, further impairing brain function.

Risk factors for stroke include advanced age, hypertension (high blood pressure), previous stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack), diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, atrial fibrillation, migraine with aura, and thrombophilia. In clinical practice blood pressure is the most important modifiable risk factor of stroke, however many other risk factors, such as cigarette smoking cessation and treatment of atrial fibrillation with anticoagulant drugs, are important.

If a person has a stroke what occurs is that a blood vessel to the brain becomes blocked or non functional. Blood cannot flow through the blood vessel to the area of the brain it serves. The blood vessel may be narrowed by atherosclerosis (cholesterol crystals in the wall of the blood vessel), the artery may be blocked by a blood clot, it may be damaged or the heart just cannot pump enough blood into the artery. The snake venom may well help in the treatment of acute ischemic strokes.

Ancrod differs from previous drugs in that the current therapies must be administered within three hours or less. In real life, and with real life logistics, as well as travel and treatment admission times, often the stroke patient is limited with options for therapy by the time they reach their treatment options. The medications derived from this snake venom can be given up to six hours opening up a whole new therapeutic window.

Currently studies are underway at a number of major medical centers to evaluate stroke trials with this medication derived from the snake venom for the treatment of acute strokes. What will be looked at is if the drug is given within six hours of a person having a sudden ischemic stroke will those patients suffer less damage related to the stroke or not. That is will the snake venom drug help people to the extent that stroke victims given the Ancrod snake venom derived drug have a lower level of disability and a higher level of function than those who were given the drug - 90 days after the tragic event.

Who know it may well be that snake in the grass that best helps out your family member or friend return back to health and function after a sudden stroke attack.

That snake in the grass may well help someone you lose with a stroke related disorder. ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Cindy Heller

Majority of the men do not encounter any troubles with their prostate gland in which the dimension can be equated to that of a walnut up to the age of forty. After which troubles might arise and it can be the source of discomfort. With the multitude of tests available, the trouble can be detected early. A once a year, regular examination is necessary for middle age men to keep track of their prostate health as prostate cancer afflicted millions of men each year.

An increasing number of men are seeking alternative method of treatments over the usual allopathic treatment and herbal medicine is an effective cure for swelling and enlargement of prostate. A number of supplements are marketed as the real things and it deceive a lot of people not used to reading labels. A verification of the authenticity of the herbal products is necessary before purchasing. Nutritionists and naturopaths worldwide concur that a good dosage of vitamins is necessary in the battle of awful diseases encompassing prostate cancer, for instant vitamin C which is also a potent anti-oxidizing agent; Vitamin A, E and K in addition to minerals like Zinc, Selenium, etc.

All ingredients can be bought in their unprocessed form and with the right diets can help in the fight against prostate diseases. Prostate herbs supplements usually contain a mixture of vitamins, minerals and prostate herbs. The right herbal products can help in the deterrence against prostate cancer. Even though the prostate herbal supplement is a good cure for prostate cancer; the herbal supplements will not be able to bring to an end or turn around once it progress to the final stage. Physicians usually recommend that no one initiate self-treatment without consulting them and under their direction. It can turn up worst if experimentation is done with herbal products bought off the shelf.

The most effective method is working with the physician while you go through naturopathy treatment. Herbal medical treatments are usually reliable but be wary of fake herbal supplements that pass of as the real things in the market. Only trust the well-known brand that has existed and gain the trust of the consumer.

One of the natural forms of treatment is beta prostate. Avoid fake and duplicated beta prostate herbal supplements as it will cause more harm to your prostate diseases and choose a correct one so that you can go through thrilling wonders of original herbal beta prostate products.

Again keep your physician informed and consumed only with their approval. I'm not against the natural form of treatments but it is better to be safe than regret later. Go through the prerequisite tests before starting the course of herbal treatments as herbal products might hold back the actual results and so you might not be clear about the trouble afflicting your prostate. Keep the physicians informed of your treatment so he will be in a better position to track your progress. This is not to be trifle with as it could spell death if treated wrongly or you could be on your way to full recovery as herbal treatment could get in the way of the final prognosis, indicating as negative even though you still have cancer.

Another way to lessen the problem of prostate enlarged prostate is through a super prostate formula. As super prostate formula contains various nutrients, it is helpful to men pass the age of forty who encounter some pains from the effect of an enlarged prostate. A super prostate formula typically includes diverse ingredients and every man who is eager to consume a super prostate formula should consult their family physician.

Seek the help to gather information about the usefulness of a super prostate formula and ideas on the finest accessible on the market at present. The composition of a super prostate formula more than often includes zinc, selenium, and beta-sitosterol and it could include much other stuff too. As the composition of a super prostate formula of dissimilar products on the market is not the same, every man should be cautious to choose only those that are suitable for them. Some super prostate formula provides the same results despite fewer ingredients. As these super prostate formulas frequently vary in prices so every man must choose one within their means to decide what best for them.

Important Facts About Varicose Veins You Should Know

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by Cindy Heller

Varicose veins are the swollen, enlarged veins that appear close to the surface of the skin. They are usually dark blue or purple in color. Any vein can become varicose, but most commonly affected veins are those found in the legs and feet. This usually happen because standing and walking upright increases pressure in the veins of the lower body which causes malfunction of the veins and results in varicose veins.

Varicose Veins May Indicate More Serious Problems

Most varicose veins are not a serious condition but they may cause aching pain and in certain instances can also lead to more serious conditions. Varicose veins can also be a symptom that indicates a higher risk of other circulatory system disorders.

Different Cause of Varicose Veins You Should Know

Before seeking treatment, one needs to know what causes varicose veins. The organ that pumps blood to all parts of the body is the heart, which then requires blood vessels to transport the blood to various parts of the body as well as back to the heart.

Although arteries transport blood from the heart to all parts of the body, it is the veins that carry blood back to the heart to be re-oxygenated. These vessels work continuously throughout our lifetime, and any problem in the function of the vessels can lead to some types of diseases and can also be the cause of varicose veins.

The Causes Of Varicose Veins

Some factors that can be considered a cause of varicose veins, include heredity, hormonal abnormalities, long periods of standing or sitting, and pregnancy. Before a suitable treatment can be suggested, it is necessary to determine the cause of varicose veins.

Obesity can also be one of the causes of varicose veins. This occurs because the extra weight usually causes strain on the legs of obese people. We should always maintain average body weight to reduce the chance of getting varicose veins.

Exercising regularly is also a good idea, as it will help improve blood circulation. One simple exercise you can do regularly is walking or jogging.

Deep vein thrombosis is another cause of varicose veins which leads to the veins becoming blue or dark purple in color. Varicose veins usually occur when the valves in the veins fail because of aging or the veins losing elasticity. This cause blood to pool in the veins and become varicose.

Another cause of varicose veins is hereditary, as the risk of getting varicose veins for women with a family history of varicose veins are greater than others.

One rare cause of varicose veins is overexposure to the sun. Too much sun may cause varicose veins on our face. To reduce chances of getting varicose veins, one should limit exposure to the harmful effects of the sun, maintain body weight and healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Treatment For Varicose Veins

There are various medical and non-medical treatment available for varicose veins. If you are looking for home remedies for varicose veins, try an application of apple cider vinegar to the affected veins. This method may help to shrink the veins within a month of beginning the treatment.

Other methods are by using compression stockings, creams and lotions or surgically removing the affected veins.

Many people worry about having varicose veins, because of the ugly appearance on the skin, and also the pain and discomfort involved. You should always seek medical advice to find out what treatment options are available for your case. Your doctor is the best person to advise you on how your condition should be treated and which treatment is best for you.

Each individual case of varicose vein may be different. Always remember that what may work on someone else may not work as well on you. You must be patient as it can often take a bit of time in order for the doctor to be able to determine what the best type of treatment would be for your particular situation.

Besides discussing with your doctor, you may also want to do some research on your own and read up about all of the different forms of treatment that are available for varicose veins. By doing this, you will be able to get the picture of what you might want to ask or point out to your doctor.

Some varicose veins surgeries are considered elective cosmetic surgery so there your insurance policies may not cover expenses incurred to treat this condition. However if your condition is severe and include symptoms such as swelling and bleeding, you may be able to get the treatment expenses covered through insurance. Check this out with your insurance provider before proceeding with the treatment.

Hernia Treatment And Prevention

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Although there are many different kinds of hernia, when people speak about a hernia, they are most likely to be referring to an abdominal hernia.

About five million Americans have an abdominal hernia, according to statistics provided by the National Center for Health Statistics.

An abdominal hernia occurs when either fatty tissue or an organ in the abdomen protrudes through a weak point or tear in the muscles or tissues around it. The protrusion can be labeled either as reducible, which means it can be pushed back into the abdominal cavity and seem to disappear, or non-reducible, which means it cannot be pushed back into the abdominal cavity.

The American Medical Association says that when a non-reducible protrusion involves a portion of the intestine it is possible for it to become tightly trapped, subsequently losing its blood supply and then that section of the intestine dies. This dangerous condition, called strangulation, often requires immediate surgical repair.

A hernia may be caused by anything that creates increased pressure in your abdominal area. The most common causes of this increased pressure, from which a hernia may result, are:

• strenuous coughing;
• vomiting
• straining, particularly that resulting from constipation;
• sudden physical exertion;
• obesity;
• pregnancy.

Treatment and prevention:

The American Medical Association suggests that most people who develop a hernia should see their doctor, even if the only symptom is the visible protrusion. Depending on the location and size of the protrusion, and considering other factors including your age and general health, the doctor may recommend surgery to reduce the risk of possible strangulation in the future.

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) advises that there two basic methods of surgery:

• conventional surgery - which involves an incision in the abdomen. The protruding tissue is then either removed or pushed back into the abdomen and the abdominal wall repaired. If necessary, that section of the abdominal wall can be strengthened either by sewing surrounding muscle over it or by covering that section with a special type of mesh;

• laparoscopic surgery - which uses a long metal tube inserted through a tiny incision in the abdomen. This minimally invasive surgical procedure uses telescopes and instruments that are much smaller than normal. If this procedure is appropriate for your condition, smaller incisions will be made and post-operative abdominal tenderness may be significantly reduced. The actual operation is much the same.

Statistics from ACS report that over half a million people undergo hernia surgery each year.

If you have had hernia surgery, or if you have been fortunate enough to avoid developing a hernia to date, there are some ways you can reduce your future hernia risk. This requires you to avoid those things that contribute to the development of hernias – as outlined earlier in this article. These include:

• avoiding heavy lifting or strain;
• as smoking often leads to chronic coughing, quitting smoking can help;
• a high fiber diet combined with plenty of fluids can help avoid constipation and the consequent strain during bowel movements;
• losing weight can reduce abdominal strain.

The protrusion can be labeled either a...

Diseases Caused By Toxic Mold

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

There are a lot of diseases that are caused by toxic molds and you may not even realize that some of the molds are actually in your house. It has been said that there are over 100,000 species of mold that exists through out the world. They are tiny and thin spores that produce themselves in different locations. The spores spread through the air and the water. Insects can also transport the spores.

Toxic mold can be dangerous and sometimes fatal for those who come in contact with the mold. Mot household molds are in colors like red, green, blue, black, and brown. The only two that are toxic that is found in the household are Stachybotrys and Memnolniella molds. There are found in damp, dark, and wet places in and around the house.

Stachybortrys grow in damp environments and on materials like wallpaper, cardboard, tile, insulation, and wood. Black mold, among the worst, feeds on things that don’t have cellulose like stachybotrys. They are poisonous because they produce mycotoxin. When inhaled it is ingested by humans and then will cause many unpleasant symptoms.

You should know that mold affects a lot of people. In fact, sensitive people (those with mold allergies) will get symptoms right away. The nose will become stuffy, eyes will be irritated, and they will begin to wheeze. It will also cause fevers and loss of breath-which may cause death.

If the lungs are obstructed with cancer or a disease, you will find that it will cause an infection to the lungs and may cause death that way. Molds like black mold have been responsible for many fatal conditions like idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage. The victim’s are usually infants and those with weak immune systems. The mold will also cause headaches, lung infections, fevers, pains, diarrhea, and rashes. It will block your breathing and cause many internal infections in a human body.

The molds can be found practically anywhere in your home or on your home or near your home. Often they are in the basement, showers, corners, or anywhere water was leaked and a mold has developed. Many people practically have of the homes in the US had some type of mold infection in their home.

To get rid of the mold you may need to use a humidifier in your basement, air condition, add ventilation, tear up carpeting, repaint the walls, clean bathrooms thoroughly, and replace curtains. The Symptoms of HIV

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Mark Cichocki, R.N.

Remember Not to Rely On Symptoms...Get Tested

Because many people who have been infected with HIV have few or no symptoms initially, testing is the only way to know for sure if you are infected with HIV. There are, however, an assortment of symptoms that can be associated with HIV infection.

Symptoms Early After Infection - Acute HIV - In emergency departments and family practice offices, people come in with symptoms like fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, rash and diarrhea. In response to these symptoms, physicians diagnose the flu and send the patient on their way. In the majority of cases, their diagnosis proves correct. But unfortunately, a number of people with these vague, indistinct symptoms have a more serious illness than the flu; these symptoms may signal the acute stages of HIV infection.

Symptoms of the Immune System - The immune system is the body's natural defense against invading foreign agents such as viruses and bacteria.

HIV attacks the immune system, weakening it and making the body more susceptible to infection. After infection, some symptoms affect the immune system.

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, axilla, or groin (lymphadenopathy)
  • Fever / night sweats

Symptoms of the GI Tract - HIV can have a profound affect on the gastrointestinal system and nutrition. Like any virus, HIV can cause symptoms ranging from poor appetite to diarrhea. Here are some of the most common:

  • Rapid weight loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Poor appetite
  • Profound fatigue

Respiratory Symptoms - Some of the most serious symptoms of HIV involve the respiratory system. Symptoms associated with breathing and respiration usually occur later in course of the disease. Unfortunately, many people's first symptom of HIV involves the respiratory system, illustrating why HIV testing is so important. Any cough or shortness of breath could be a sign of bacterial pneumonia or pneumocystis (carinii) jiroveci pneumonia (PCP).

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry cough / productive cough

Symptoms of the Skin and Mucous Membranes - Many of the symptoms of HIV are a result of infection by other viruses, fungi or bacteria. Often, these infections involve the skin or mucous membranes (for example, inside the mouth).

  • Skin rash
  • Red, brown, pink or purple lesion on the skin - suggestive of Kaposi's sarcoma
  • White patches on the tounge, inside of the mouth, or gums - could be signs of thrush, candida, or hairy oral leukoplakia
  • Canker sores / apthous ulcers

Neurological / Emotional Symptoms - Very early on in the epidemic, experts realized that HIV affected both the physical and emotional self. Neurological and emotional symptoms of HIV can include the following.

  • Depression
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning in the feet, hands, or face. (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Confusion, weakness, or changes in level of conciousness

How Gastro Runs Its Course

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , ,

by: Ann Stewart

Gastroenteritis is a very common disease, often referred to as an upset stomach, traveler's tummy, or ‘Montezuma’s revenge. It is primarily a viral condition, i.e. not caused by bacteria.

Viral gastroenteritis is often mistakenly called stomach flu, but it is not caused by the influenza virus and it does not infect the stomach.

Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the intestines, which causes diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, and other symptoms of digestive upset.

Highly contagious, viral gastroenteritis is the second most common illness in the United States. Anyone can get viral gastroenteritis and most people recover without any complications. However, it can be serious when people cannot drink enough fluids to replace what is lost through vomiting and diarrhea, especially infants, young children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems.

The disease is spread through close contact with infected persons, either by sharing food, water or eating utensils. Outbreaks can occur in households, child care settings, schools, nursing homes, cruise ships, camps, dormitories, restaurants, and other places where people gather in groups.

Viral gastroenteritis is either sporadic or epidemic. The sporadic form is characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, fever, or a combination of these.

The epidemic version is also known as winter vomiting disease, acute infectious nonbacterial gastroenteritis, epidemic diarrhea and vomiting, epidemic collapse, and epidemic nausea and vomiting.

The influenza virus does not cause epidemic viral gastroenteritis but instead is responsible for "the flu," a systemic, febrile (causes a fever) disease that predominantly involves the respiratory tract and not the digestive tract in humans.

Many viruses and other microbes (germs) can cause gastroenteritis. Bacteria, like E-coli, do not themselves cause the illness, but their poisonous by-products can contaminate food. The viruses that cause viral gastroenteritis damage the cells in the lining of the small intestine.

At least 50% of all food-borne outbreaks of gastroenteritis can be attributed to the norovirus and rotavirus, which occur primarily in the winter.

The Norwalk and Norwalk-like viruses account for most food and waterborne outbreaks of gastroenteritis in North America.

Astroviruses and Adenovirus cause sporadic gastroenteritis in children under 4 years of age.

Insects, rodents or other animals present in areas where food is prepared may contaminate food, equipment, benches and utensils with gastroenteritis germs. The agents that cause viral gastroenteritis can also be carried in drinking water or commercial shellfish that have been contaminated by sewage runoff. Infected food handlers who don't follow proper sanitary procedures also can spread the disease in meals served in restaurants and cafeterias.

In general, the symptoms begin one to two days following infection with a virus that causes gastroenteritis and may last for one to 10 days, depending on which virus causes the illness

Treatment focuses on reducing the symptoms and preventing dehydration. Gastroenteritis will normally pass of its own accord, providing the patient is able to keep sufficiently hydrated.

Viral gastroenteritis cannot be cured with antibiotics. Replacement of fluid and electrolyte losses is the critical central element of effective treatment of acute diarrhea.

In hospitalized cases where the patient is not able to keep down any fluids, this is done intravenously.

No vaccine is available for viral gastroenteritis with the exception of a newly released rotavirus vaccine called Rotateq.

In closing, the best cure for this all too common disease is prevention! Strict hygiene measures should be standard, including disinfection of toilets after use and regular hand washing. Ensure that food is always stored in clean, sealed containers, all perishables are kept refrigerated or frozen until needed, and meats are well cooked. In many areas it is wise to boil and/or filter the water.

As many victims of this condition have either a chronic or temporary low immune system, it is of utmost importance to ensure that you keep your immune system in tip-top condition.

Remember: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Meniers Disease - Low Salt Diet Considerations

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

By Tom Beni

Meniers Disease is a disorder of the inner ear that could be related to some abnormality of the inner ear fluids. Its symptoms include vertigo, hear loss, tinnitus (loud ringing in the ear), sensation of fullness in the affected ear and even sudden falls. These attacks vary in length, intensity and frequency. And there is still no known cause for it no cure found.

There is no doubt that a low salt diet helps a lot of people who suffer from Meniers Disease. The interesting fact is that there is no full scientific explanation why is that so. It does seem that the symptoms are often controlled successfully by reducing the body’s retention of fluids through dietary changes. But before rushing into it, there are always things you should know on how to make your diet safe and effective.

Salt, or Sodium, is a natural mineral found in foods and drinks or added to them. Sodium is important in order to maintain normal blood volume and pressure and for normal function of nerves and muscles. The body has its own way of regulating sodium levels. A low salt diet should keep a low body level of sodium, but not less that what the body needs. Falling below the necessary sodium levels may damage your health. So always consult your doctor before changing your diet.

A "normal" sodium intake for adults is around 1100-3300 milligrams per day. A low intake would be 400-1000 milligrams per day. Meniers Disease patients would usually start with a diet of under 2000 milligrams per day, and decrease the amount if necessary. Compare that with the 2000mg of sodium in a single teaspoon of table salt and the fact that some foods have natural salt, and you'll realize that practicing such a diet requires considerable effort.

Always fully scrutinize the "Nutritional Information" of the foods you buy and search for those with low sodium levels. Remember that sometimes this information is based on very little serving portions, and that you need to base your shopping to the actual amount of food that you would probably eat.

Generally speaking, you should avoid salty snacks, fat milk or meat, regular canned vegetables and soups, ketchup, soy sauce and fast food. Try to focus of "healthy foods" such as fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat milk or meat, whole-grain breads, unsalted popcorn and very light salad dressing.

Water can also be an issue, especially if they are going through some sort of water softener. These softeners replace chemicals, such as calcium and magnesium, that make the water "hard", usually with sodium that soften the water. In some cases, drinking 2 liters of this kind of water would cost you more that half your limit sodium intake!

Here are some more tips to help you ease into your Meniers Disease low salt diet:
* If you find it hard to stop using salt (taste-wise), try halving the amounts needed. Slowly you'll get use to the taste, and then keep decreasing again.
* Try using herbs and spices as flavor enhancements.
* Don't put salt at the table.
* Choose your restaurants carefully, and check what's in the food.
* Drink 8 glasses of fresh (unsoftened) water per day

Tom Beni has a history of Meniers Disease in his family. He is following the subject as part of maintaining a curious and healthy life style.

Yeast Infections in Men - Causes, Symptoms and Cures

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Jack Landry

Male yeast infections can occur in just the same places that women will get it – with the exception of the vagina of course! But, I’m not talking primarily of the yeast infections that can occur elsewhere on the body, but instead of the type of yeast infections that can occur on the genital area. Yeast infections in men can occur just as they do in women.

Now since men don’t have a vagina, and therefore can’t harbor or breed the Candida bacteria in their vagina, it falls to the factor of transference for men to get yeast infections.

Causes

Although there can be a few different reasons for men to get yeast infections, the most common reason is due to transferal through sexual intercourse. If their sexual partner has a yeast infection, then a man has a chance of also contracting a yeast infection.

You can in fact get a yeast infection by passing it along to your partner through sexual intercourse. For the most part this is how male yeast infections will occur. It will pass from you to your partner and sometimes even back again.

That’s why it’s a good thing if you can stop all sexual relations until your yeast clears up. After all that’s said and done, it’s better to have a short period of abstinence in your life than to have to be continually guarding against a recurrence of yeast just because you passed it along to your partner.

This can sometimes have a ping pong effect where you might first have the yeast infection and pass it along to your partner, who in turn will get it, and who in turn will pass it back to you. However, although you can get yeast infections through sexual intercourse, yeast infections aren’t considered as a sexually transmitted disease.

This is not a matter of sexually transmitted diseases. Yeast infections can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, but that doesn’t mean that the other person will get it. In the case of male yeast infections, there’s only a 12-15% chance that they will get it f their partner has a yeast infection.

That’s why it’s always a good idea to abstain from having sexual relations while you have a yeast infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms of male yeast infections will be similar to those of vaginal yeast infections. There will be some differences but for the most part they are similar.

• Itching of the penis
• Burning sensation of the tip of the penis
• Red rash on your penis
• Burning sensation when urinating

Cures

And just as the symptoms for male yeast infections are the same or similar to those of female yeast infections, the cures are also the same or similar. Very obviously there are some things that you can’t do in the case of cures, like the use of suppositories for instance.

But you can adapt just about all of the other cures to suit you. You might also want to ask your doctor about prescription medications and over the counter medications.

In the case of over the counter medications you might definitely want to ask your doctor first about whether you can use them as well, or whether you need to go in for something different. And once you do get it there’s also the chance that you can pass it back to your sexual partner and get it back again as well.

Hypothyroidism falls under the hormonal disorder. The condition occurs when the thyroid gland (which is located in the neck region) secrets the thyroxin hormone below the normal secretion level. Thyroxin plays an important role in body metabolism process. Any abnormality or alteration in this hormone will disturb metabolism of the body too.

To prevent the disease and its adverse effects, it is quite important to first get the problem diagnosed properly. 6 Ways to Slow Down the Adult ADD Brain

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

If you have adult ADD, then you know that sometimes, slowing down is a very hard thing to do. There are so many tasks to accomplish and so little time to get them done. So your mind goes into high speed, trying to accomplish it all and more, or worrying about the fact that it seems impossible to get it all done. As a result, you spend a lot of time stressing, and very little time enjoying life.

While slowing down is a difficult skill to build, it can be done. Here are 6 proven ways to slow down the adult ADD brain:

1. Leave Work
Set your business hours and stick to them! Although sometimes it's necessary to work late, don't do it unless you absolutely have to! You'll work more efficiently during the day when the time you have to accomplish your tasks is limited. And take weekends off (or at least 2 days a week)! You deserve it.

2. Plan a Night Out with Others
Nothing is more fun than a night out with people you like. This could be coworkers, friends, family, or members of a group you belong to. Enjoy yourself.

3. Make a Weekly Commitment (Like Taking a Class or Participating in a Group)
Get an excuse to get out of the house and out of the office every week! Take a class, preferably learning something you always wanted to know how to do. Make sure you *pay* for the class in advance so you won't be tempted to skip it!

4. Journal
Journaling forces you to stop, reflect and process. It helps you manage stress and gain clarity. Make the decision to do it every day - even if it's just for 10 minutes! Don't worry about grammar, spelling, punctuation, or flow because no one else ever has to see it.

5. Meditate
There are many different ways to meditate, but I prefer mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is simply the act of being in the present moment - whether you are working, walking, or doing the dishes! Try to keep your mind in the moment, and don't follow stressful or worrisome thoughts when they arise. It's okay to begin slowly by doing 5 minutes of mindful meditation a day, and then building on your practice as you become more comfortable.

6. Turn off Your Computer 2 Hours Before Bed
Computers are quite stimulating, especially for ADDers. Oftentimes, you'll find yourself sitting at your computer at 3 o'clock in the morning totally engrossed in researching something completely random. You just can't step away from it to go to sleep, and that's because the computer wakes up your brain. Turn the computer off two hours before bed in order to properly wind down, and slow down, at night.

Kidney Stones in Women - Symptoms and Advice

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Nicholas Matthews

there are many people that suffer from kidney stones, although I have to admit that before I started to suffer from them myself I did not hear much about them. Once I had a problem with kidney stones it seems that everyone that ever had them came in contact with me with their own particular story about what they went through whatever they had them. The pain that is felt when you have a kidney stone is almost indescribable, and if you have never felt that particular pain then consider yourself lucky. Kidney stones are also indiscriminate, they don't care if they strike men or women. If you are a woman is having problems with kidney stones, or you would like to know the kidney stone symptoms in women and here is some information that might be of use to you.

Any pain that is felt from kidney stones is often the same in both men and women. Although many times you hear about the problems with kidney stones as being intense pain in the back, oftentimes a kidney stone can pass with little or no pain. I have had, in the past, what is known as silent kidney stones. There was no pain involved, however I had dark urine which let me know that that was a problem, and some bleeding somewhere along the line.

Eventually the kidney stone passed and the bleeding stopped. Sometimes, however, the pain that is felt from a kidney stone can circle around from the back to the front. Since women tend to, sometimes, have difficulty with cramping during their menstrual cycle than it is difficult to distinguish the difference if the pain is not too severe. You would also want to be careful with the amount of calcium that you take. Many women take calcium supplements because they do not get enough in their diet, however this could cause a problem as most kidney stones are caused by a buildup of calcium in the system.

Top 10 Hair Styling Tips To Avoid A Bad Hair Day

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by: Sara Liz

No More Bad Hair Days!

If you ask most professional hair stylists they will tell you that less than 25% of the female population actually knows what face shape and skin tone they have. Knowing your face shape will allow you to pick the perfect hair cut. Knowing your skin tone will allow you to pick the perfect hair color. Most women know even less about how to style their hair.

Women are also confused when it comes to knowing what type of hair they have. They may have a lot of hair, which makes them think they have thick hair when in reality each individual strand of hair may be thin, coarse or wavy. This is the reason many women purchase and use the wrong hair styling products. If you’ve ever experienced a bad hair day check out this list of the top 10 reasons why they happen and vow to avoid all of them when creating your next hair styling moment.

Here are the ten top hair style mistakes hair professionals will tell you most women make:

1. Poor blow drying habits.

Just about every woman’s hair can use some volume. Even hair that is poker straight will look better with some volume. The trick is in the blow drying. Don’t blow dry your hair front to back- dry it back to front, lifting at the roots, bringing your hair up using a round brush. For even more volume use a vent brush. The blow dryer should be held at least 12 inches from your scalp, and keep it moving.

2. No protection.

If you use a blow dryer, curling iron, and/or electric curlers you should be using a thermal protector spray. With out it your hair is susceptible to damage from the high heat temperatures. Just spray your hair lightly and comb it throughout to distribute it evenly.

3. The wrong choice.

You would think that most women would know their hair type. But when it comes to picking the perfect products for their hair type most women don’t have a clue. You may know that your hair is curly but is it a fine, coarse or medium texture? Is it color-treated, straight, wavy, or thinning? Do you need a thick gel or just some light mousse? If you are unsure of your exact hair type, ask your stylist. Perhaps you will need to combine two or more products to get the best results. It’s not rocket science but it’s close!

4. Too much of a good thing.

Even when they find the perfect product, most women use too much of it. When your hair stylist gives you the perfect hair cut for your hair, few styling products should be necessary. Your hair should fall into place naturally. No more than a dime size of product is usually necessary. You will need even less of serums or pomades as they are more concentrated. Weighting your hair down with too much product can make it look unwashed and it will become a dust magnet.

5. Flat iron flattening

Incorrect use of the flat iron is evident to most hairstylists. Your hair can become “fried" over time. This can lead to breakage. Many women forget the thermal spray that protects the hair shaft from the heat of a flat iron. After using the protection you should start by sectioning your hair into small sections almost as wide as the flat iron. Starting at the roots, slowly pull the iron down to silken and smooth the hair. When you come to the end of your hair you can choose to pull straight out, flip up or flip under.

6. Trying to style wet or damp hair.

Only hair that is completely dry will hold a hair style. If your hair takes a long time to blow dry you may want to wash it at night to avoid feeling rushed in the morning. Actually hair that has had time to recoup some of the oils that have been washed out will behave better. Once your hair is completely dry, apply any styling products you are using and continue to dry your hair on a low to medium setting. Then style.

7. Waiting too long in between hair cuts.

Ask any professional: A great hairstyle begins with a great hair cut. Some hair cuts will look great as they grow out, but if you like the hairstyle your wearing, get back to the hairstylist as soon as your hair begins to grown out. This could be anywhere between 4 to 8 weeks. This will help the stylist know just what look you want. Another good tip is when you get that perfect hairstyle or haircut, be sure to take a picture, one of the front, one of the back, and both sides, and bring them with you. This way the hairstylist will know exact what you want. Even if you want to grow your hair out, a trim of the spilt ends is very important. Frequent trims will cut the split end off before it can split the entire shaft of hair. This is important if you want a smooth and silky look to your hair.

8. Over styling.

Unless you’re a runway model or someone who is embarking on one of life’s most momentous occasions, like your wedding or prom, there is no need to go over board. Today’s styles call for natural hair that moves and falls freely. This is achieved with the proper hairstyle that fits your hair type and the use of just the right hair styling products.

9. Under styling

Just the opposite of over styling are the millions of women who do nothing. Unless your hair is only a few inches long, it’s not “wash and go". The right hair cut, a little blow drying and styling product can make all the difference in the world. Give it a try!

10. Pick the wrong hair style all together.

Most women choose a hair style that they see on someone else. What looks good on your favorite celebrity or co-worker may not be the hair style that fits your face shape or will work with your type of hair texture, be it wavy, curly, poker straight or thick and springy. Your hair stylist will know what your hair will and will not do, so it is best to bring several hair style pictures with you when visiting your hair stylist for a new hair cut.

Food As Medicine: the Principles of Healthy Eating

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by: Pierre Jean Cousin

One of the most important ways in which we can influence our health is by monitoring what we eat. Eating unhealthily – too much animal fat, salt, sugar and artificial additives – can cause irreparable damage to our bodies, especially to the cardiovascular system and the kidneys. Eating healthily can increase vitality, immunity and life expectancy. We can also influence the health of future generations by teaching our children healthy eating habits.

Food can be used not only to prevent illness but also to treat it. Throughout the ages, and in all cultures, food has played an important role in healing the sick. Yet in contemporary Western societies the emphasis in healthcare has moved from traditional methods, such as diet, to modern medical techniques and a reliance on pharmaceuticals. As a result, self-help dietary remedies are rarely considered. As an experienced practitioner of a range of complementary therapies, I firmly believe in bringing the healing power of foods back to where it belongs – in our homes.

The principles of healthy eating

The mainstay of a healthy diet is plenty of unrefined complex carbohydrates and fibre. Foods such as beans, lentils, potatoes, wholemeal pasta, wholegrain bread and cereals should make up – quite literally – the bulk of our diet. Protein-rich foods, such as meat or fish, can be added to this carbohydrate base in small amounts. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t need very much protein for good health and it is not necessary to eat meat, fish and dairy products as a daily source of protein. The other essential ingredients in a heathy diet are vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (biologically-active substances in plants) which are found in abundance in fruit and vegetables, and essential fatty acids from nuts, seeds, oily fish and oils such as olive oil.

This basic template for healthy eating:

This basic template for healthy eating closely matches the traditional diet that is – or was – eaten in many cultures. Civilizations throughout history have relied upon a combination of cereals and pulses for their staple diet. In Asia this combination is rice and soya; in America it was corn and beans; in Europe it was wheat, rye, barley, oats or buckwheat and beans, lentils or other pulses; and in Africa it is wheat, millet or sorghum and beans or chickpeas. Traditionally, a variety of fruit and vegetables (often eaten raw) have complemented this diet, together with small amounts of meat and fish when available. Fermented foods, such as cheese, yoghurt, curd, fish sauce, pickled vegetables, cider, beer and wine – all of which have a beneficial effect on the gut – also feature in the traditional diet. This diet is ideally suited to the human body – it is rich in friendly bacteria, fibre and nutrients and helps to maintain a healthy biological balance in the gut.

It is very easy to adopt the healthy eating habits that are characteristic of such diets by following these simple common-sense measures:

-Buy more fresh fruit and vegetables (they are rich in antioxidants – substances that help to prevent degenerative disease such as cancer and heart disease), cereals, pulses and fish.

- Cut down on meat, dairy products and convenience food.

- Replace meat with oily fish.

- Tailor food intake to match your actual calorie needs (for most people this means eating less).

- Buy a cook book that emphasizes the Mediterranean diet.

- Reduce your intake of sugar, coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and alcohol.

- Eat at regular intervals (up to five times a day if this suits your needs).

- Eat food that is in-season and, ideally, locally produced.

- Make sure that your diet is as varied as possible.

- Use fresh ingredients as often as possible; avoid canned or dried food which contains additives.

- Be flexible in your eating – aim for balance and enjoyment. Avoid rigid dietary programmes.

How the modern diet fails

These principles of healthy eating contrast starkly with the diet that is increasingly common in the West. Whereas the diet of our pre-industrial ancestors was rich in fresh produce, the modern diet, which has evolved over the last 50–60 years, is characterized by food that contains preservatives, colorants, taste enhancers, sugar, caffeine and even traces of fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and metals. This leads to a proliferation of unhealthy bacteria in the gut, an accumulation of toxins in the body, poor digestion and an increased likelihood of allergies, cardiovascular disease and cancer of the colon.

In the West, food is abundant (the amount produced far exceeds our needs) and relatively cheap owing to modern production and processing techniques. These techniques have created what has been termed “food industrialization" – the production of large amounts of food quickly and cheaply at the expense of quality and nutritional content. Paradoxically, although we now have more choice in what we can eat, less time is devoted to the selection, preparation and consumption of food. Our diets often consist of a limited number of ingredients that we continue eating out of routine and convenience.

Much of the food that we buy is impoverished. For example, when fresh produce is out of season in one country, it is often imported from another, and much of its vitamin content is lost during transit or storage in refrigerators or on supermarket shelves.

Goodness is also depleted in the process of sterilization: in order to make fresh food “safe" and prolong shelf-life by eliminating micro-organisms, it is often sterilized or irradiated – yet this procedure renders it, quite literally, lifeless. Although all unhealthy disease-causing bacteria are killed in the process, all the “good" bacteria and ferments are also destroyed. These are important for digestion and in maintaining a healthy and balanced environment in the gut. Most milk, for example, is pasteurized, with the result that it does not contain natural ferments and is difficult for many people to break down and digest. Milk products that have not been pasteurized, such as live yoghurt (which is full of lactobacilli bacteria), are well tolerated by most people. Another consequence of sterilization is that, if food is left out of the refrigerator for too long or is reheated too many times, micro-organisms, such as listeria, will re-establish themselves. Without competition from good bacteria, the unhealthy ones can proliferate unchecked and cause disease.

Industrialized food production is partly responsible for a range of contemporary health problems such as male hormone imbalance (linked to the misuse of hormones in animals), the advent of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria (linked to the routine addition of antibiotics to animal feed), salmonella in poultry and eggs (linked to poor living conditions among animals), and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (linked to bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE, a disease affecting cows that is caused by contaminated cattle feed). Genetic modification of food is the latest in a catalogue of food-production experiments that I believe may have harmful long-term effects on human health and the environment. The defensive attitude of scientists who argue that “no evidence exists that genetically-modified (GM) food is unsafe" needs to be challenged – this kind of negative statement does not constitute proof that GM food is safe.

Due to the wide-ranging effects of food industrialization it is important that, as consumers, we make informed choices about what we buy – not just favouring foods that are unprocessed and grown according to organic principles, but also excluding products that are nutritionally-empty and preserved and enhanced in artificial ways.

The medicinal value of food

Our knowledge of the healing power of food is based upon thousands of years of tradition and empirical observation. Modern scientific research now confirms the curative abilities of foods that have been used therapeutically through the ages. A huge variety of foods are known to contain compounds that have medicinal properties. For example, the potent antibacterial action of allicin, a substance found in garlic, is well documented. So too are the protective and healing properties of antioxidants and essential oils found in fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices. Some pharmacologically-active ingredients are extracted from food and sold in tablet form. Cynarin, for example, is an active ingredient that is extracted from artichoke. An extensive body of research has shown that this substance can play an important role in treating liver disease and help damaged liver tissue to regenerate. The great advantage of using food as medicine is that food is readily available to all of us and can be self-administered with relative safety. Food cures work in a purely holistic way by enhancing the body’s natural functions and encouraging it to heal itself.

Selecting and harvesting ingredients

Whenever possible, use organically-grown fruit and vegetables, make sure they are fresh and avoid keeping them in a refrigerator for too long. When buying meat, buy organically-produced, free-range or farm-raised meat; buy small quantities of quality cuts rather than larger amounts of cheaper meat. Try to buy fish on the same day that it is delivered to your fishmonger.

If possible, try to harvest wild ingredients from your garden or local countryside. When picking ingredients, such as borage leaves, nettles and dandelion leaves, choose young plants that are growing away from main roads, rail tracks, and paths that are regularly used by animals. Make sure that you can confidently identify the plants that you need and that what you pick is in good condition and fit for consumption. You can cultivate many herbs, such as camomile, lemon balm, savoury, mint, basil, thyme and rosemary, in your garden or in pots on a patio or balcony. When harvesting wild fruit, such as berries, choose bushes and trees that are not exposed to pollution from roads. Collect only undamaged, ripe fruit and don’t be tempted to eat it on the spot – it must be washed thoroughly, and preferably cooked.

A Virus Made Me Fat?

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by: Abigail Richards

Research has finally proven what we have wanted to hear for years. It isn’t junk food that makes you fat or laying on the couch or the lack of exercise-no it is a virus?

Researchers are claiming that a virus is the cause of obesity. Dr. Magdalena Pasarica, M.D., Ph.D., of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center has an explanation as to why obesity affects many people worldwide. She said it’s a contagious virus called human adenovirus or Ad-36.

Apparently AD-36 induces storage fat. She does say that they do not believe the virus is the only cause of obesity, but studies show stronger evidence that the virus could be the cause.

Studies are still being completed since not all people with the virus develop obesity. “We would ultimately like to identify the underlying factors that predispose some obese people to develop this virus and eventually find a way to treat it," Pasarica said.

The research was conducted by obtaining adult stem cells from fat tissue of people who had undergone liposuction. Stem cells are a type of master cell that exist in an immature form and give rise to more specialized cells.

After about a week of growth in tissue culture, most of the virus-infected adult stem cells developed into fat cells, whereas the non-infected stem cells did not, the researchers say.

Previous studies have shown AD-36 increased fat in chickens, mice and other nonhuman animals.

It is said that the virus then tells the cells to produce a lot of lipids, or fats. The result: bigger fat cells — and more of them. Those infected with the virus are advised to double their exercise and dieting efforts.

So I am thinking it had to come from that little boy I kissed on the playground in kindergarten. It was downhill from there. Well what is done is done. I guess I will die an infected obese person. . . now where did I put those potato chips?

Natural Home Cures For Cirrhosis Of The Liver

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

The patient should be kept in bed. He must abstain completely from alcohol in any form. He should undergo an initial liver cleaning programme with a juice fast for five to seven days. Freshly-extracted juices from red beets, lemon, papaya and grapes may be taken during this period. This may be followed by the fruit and milk diet for two or three weeks. In this regimen, the patient should have three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits and milk. The fruits may include apple, pear, grapes, grapefruit, orange, pineapple and peach. One litre of milk may be taken on the first day. It should be increased by 250 ml daily up to two litres a day. The milk should be fresh and unboiled, but may be slightly warmed, if desired. It should be sipped very slowly.

After the fruit-and-milk diet, the patient may gradually embark upon a well-balanced diet of three basic food groups, namely (i) seeds, nuts and grains (ii) vegetables and (iii) fruits, with emphasis on raw organically-grown foods. Adequate high quality protein is necessary in cirrhosis. The best complete proteins for liver patients are obtained from raw goat's milk, home-made raw cottage cheese, sprouted seeds and grains and raw nuts, especially almonds. Vegetables such as beets, squashes, bitter gourd, egg-plant, tomato, carrot, radish and papaya are useful in this condition. All fats and oils should be excluded from the diet for several weeks:

The patient should avoid all refined, processed and canned foods, sugar in any form, spices and condiments, strong tea and coffee, fried foods, all preparations cooked in ghee, oil or butter and all meats rich in fat. The use of salt should be restricted. The patient should also avoid all chemical additives in food and poisons in air, water and environment.

The juice of carrot, in combination with spinach juice, or cucumber and beet juice, has been found beneficial in the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver. In the first combination, 200 ml. of spinach juice should be mixed with 300 ml. of carrot juice to prepare 500 ml. or half a litre of combined juices. In the second c6mbination, 100 ml. each of cucumber and beet juices should be mixed with 300 ml. of carrot juice to prepare 500 ml. or half a litre of combined juices. In the second combination, 100 ml. each of cucumber and beet juices should be mixed with 300 ml. of carrot juice.

Black seeds of papaya have been found useful in the cirrhosis of the liver, caused by alcoholism and malnutrition. A tablespoon of juice obtained by grinding the seeds, mixed with 10 drops of fresh lime juice, should be given once or twice daily for about a month as a medicine for this disease.

There are many tinnitus sufferers that don't bother going for a diagnosis even if they hear an unusual ringing sound in their ears.

As getting sufficient sleep and rest is extremely difficult for a person with very loud ear ringing symptoms , using white noise maskers do help a lot. These are played at a volume higher than the volume of the tinnitus sounds so that it is the white noise that a person with tinnitus hears and not the tinnitus sounds. To assist with treating tinnitus, maskers are CD recordings of white noise, the same sound that is you hear when you listen to an empty radio station. This way a person is able to relax and sleep and forget about the ear ringing sounds.

And while taking the homeopathic treatment, it is best to use tinnitus masking therapy such as white noise CD's to mask the noises and fall asleep. The right homeopathic tinnitus remedies based on the symptoms of the tinnitus are recommended in coordination with the vitamin supplements.

So You’ve Got Receding Gums? There Is Still Hope!

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

The word dentist makes more people cringe than any other word in the English language. Visions of blood, pain and bad news are caused by this one word. Most people only visit the dentist when the pain is so unbearable that they can handle it anymore. Since this is the case, it takes time and money to correct the situation. Oral hygiene is a worry that most people are not concerned about until theirs causes a problem. Receding gums is diagnosed in thousands of people every year. It is important to know what causes this problem and how to prevent them.

Receding gums begin differently for different people. It can be quickly for some while others may notice a twinge occasionally. Most people notice a slight discomfort of the gums, at first. In the beginning, it is in one or two areas of the mouth. The discomfort is noticeable when eating hard items, such as apples or carrots and while brushing or flossing. As this condition worsens, the person will notice the gum pulling away from the teeth and more bleeding from the damaged site.

Receding gums are caused by gum disease or trauma to the teeth. Trauma to the teeth can be an object lodged underneath the gum line, such as a seed, or a physical blow to the mouth. Most receding gums are caused by gum disease. Gum disease is due to unbalanced bacteria in the mouth. This is a fairly common occurrence. Gum disease is found in most adults but is mild and unnoticed. By the time the gums start to recede, the gum disease is well past the harmless stage.

One of the best ways to combat receding gums is brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis. Brushing your teeth for at least two minutes at a time is the recommended time limit. By brushing fully for the two minutes twice a day will control the bacteria that cause receding gum disease. Flossing can be overlooked in the daily mouth maintance. This is vital in keeping gums clean and disease free. Flossing at least once daily is recommended by dentists.

Diet is also an important factor in keeping receding gums from happening. Foods high in sugar and fat are bad for teeth. By getting the necessary vitamins and nutrients helps fight the bacteria that cause receding gum disease. For those who are picky eaters, daily supplemental vitamins can assist with in fighting gum disease. Eating healthy now can keep costly dental procedures from happening later.

Receding gum disease can also be prevented by regular dental appointments every six months. It is important to make sure that everything is okay. Professional teeth and gum cleaning helps get those hard to reach spots. They also ensure there are not unrecognized problems in the mouth.

Receding gums are painful, unattractive and dangerous to a person’s health. It is possible to avoid them through simple preventive measures. Oral hygiene is important and easy to preventive pain and high cost.

Alpaca Diseases - How to Protect Your Herd

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by: Debby McCandless

Alpacas are hardy animals and do not become ill easily. When they do, they are very stoic and you may not know they are ill until it's to late. Prevention is always the best way to protect your herd.

One of the most horrific alpaca diseases an alpaca can get is meningeal worm. This parasite infects an alpacas brain or spinal cord and can cause severe neurological damage and death. M. worm can be treated if the neurological damage is not too severe but the neurological damage caused by the infection is irreversible.

If you live in an area with white-tailed deer, you probably have meningeal worm in your area. The m. worm lives in a deer without causing problems. The deer sheds them and snails or slugs become an intermediate host which your alpaca may eat and then become infected with the m. worm where it migrates to the brain or spinal cord.

Preventing m. worm is done by giving worming medicine monthly from spring to fall when snails and slugs are present. The dosage is based on weight and a vet can tell you how to inject the medicine and tell you what dosage you need to give your alpacas.

Another one of the alpaca diseases, although still rare, is West Nile Virus and it can be fatal. Mosquitos carry this disease. There is a vaccination for horses that has been tested in Llamas and Alpacas. Ask your vet if the vaccination is appropriate for your area.

Another mosquito borne disease that alpacas can become infected with is Eastern Equine Enchephalitis. It, too, can be fatal. This disease is found mainly along the eastern seaboard and Gulf coast of the United States. There is ,also, a vaccine being tested on alpacas for this disease. Ask your vet for an update on whether you should vaccinate your herd or not.

Both of these alpaca diseases cause neurological symptoms. Seizures, ataxia (loss of coordination), head tilt, tremors, etc.

To prevent these two alpaca diseases in your herd, keep the mosquito population down. Keeping the mosquito population down includes draining standing water, mowing vegetation around ponds, and aerating water so that mosquito larvae have less chance of surviving.

Most important to preventing alpaca diseases is to become educated about the animals you own or are about to own. Understanding what diseases can affect your animals will help you know how to prevent these and other diseases.

Chitosan Research

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

By Pauline Go

One of the many remarkable diet control supplements that can substantially contribute to weight loss is Chitosan. Chitosan is a naturally occurring substance that resembles cellulose in its structure and is derived from a polysaccharide called chitin. Chitin is primarily found in the exoskeletons of shellfish such as shrimps, crustaceans and crabs. Shells of these animals are crushed into a fine powder. This powder is passed through a process of deacetylation resulting in the formation of Chitosan.

The most remarkable property of Chitosan is that it is a special fiber that acts as an effective fat binder at the rate of six to ten times its weight. The soaked up fat molecules are then converted into a form that is not suitable for absorption. Being a non-digestible substance, consumption of Chitosan does not add any additional calories into the body. Recent research has found that Chitosan has the ability to interfere with fat digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Apart from this, Chitosan also facilitates the excretion of dietary fat through feces. Research has shown that consumption of Chitosan in combination with ascorbic acid would reduce the fat levels significantly.

Along with controlling weight, Chitosan also has other health benefits. Chitosan has shown to effectively control the blood serum cholesterol levels. Research has shown that Chitosan could increase the level of HDL cholesterol in the body, while lowering the levels of LDL cholesterol in the body. Chitosan performs the function of a cholestryramine and is particularly beneficial to patients suffering with coronary heart diseases.

Ancestral Healing - What Is It?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Rose Smith, BA, DRM

What is ancestral healing you may well ask? The short answer? It is 'healing your family tree which includes both you and any descendents you have'.

You can heal members of your current family, your children, grandchildren, and so on, even before they are born. Our ancestors exist not only in genes passed down through the generations, but also in an energetic pattern of thoughts, emotions, illnesses and karma which can effect every part of a person's life.

Ancestral healing can transform energetic patterns with a vibrational shift in the entire ancestral line.

What Can Be Healed?

Physical, emotional, mental and spiritual issues can be healed such as alcoholism, depression, mental illness and various physical illnesses. Even criminality which has now been mapped by the Human Genome Project can be addressed by ancestral healing.

In short, anything detrimental you feel you have inherited or where there is a dysfunctional pattern in your family tree can be a candidate for ancestral healing e.g. incest or abuse.

How Does It Work?

Many cultures embrace the idea of the connection with our ancestral lineages. Native Americans and Aboriginal peoples particularly incorporate the idea of their ancestors living with them and guiding them through their lives.

As modern day westerners, unfortunately we have forgotten our ancestral connections as we go about our busy lives. Some of us see little relevance in what our distant family may have done in the past.

We do not realize that whatever has been done, felt or thought is within our DNA. We have inherited all the energetic patterning including our ancestors' thoughts, feelings, illnesses and reactions to both tragedies and celebrations. Although we normally don't remember these things, as we become conscious, we become more aware of the importance of making peace with our ancestors.

How Do I Do It?

There are many things you can do to help heal your family tree. From a practical point of view, tracing your family tree and making notes of reoccurring patterns is a starting point. You may also choose to visit ancestral homelands and cemeteries where your ancestors are buried.

Talk to your family and find out as much as possible about your ancestors. Consult a specialist who can assist you with tracing your family tree. Birth and death certificates can be obtained. Check old church records. Trace the meaning of your surname.

Surnames often describe occupations or regions where your ancestors would have lived. For example my surname smith comes from blacksmith, silversmith or metal smith. At one point in history, these were cutting edge technologies (and also thought to be 'magical') and smiths were highly valued in their communities. Consequently in Britain, sometimes the legs of local smiths were broken so they couldn't walk away from their villages.

Smiths were simply too valuable to be free to roam the country. Until I realised this connection in my early 30's, I used to dream about having broken legs which wouldn't walk properly. These dreams started in my childhood and bothered me for all those years. When I realised what my dreams were about, I made peace with my ancestors about being a 'smith' and the dreams stopped. I now thank my ancestors for giving me a name which is connected to both a spiritual and practical craft.

Smithing is about craftsmanship done with a spiritual purpose. You too may find your name has an important meaning for you and you can thank your ancestors.

From a spiritual point of view, in order to heal your family tree, you will need to confront the energetic patterning. This does not necessarily mean confronting your living family members if you have a problem with them. It's the energy you must confront. This sometimes means you may discover very unpleasant things about your family.

Do not be afraid to do this as you have already been carrying this energy around with you all of your life. If you don't look at these patterns, they will still influence your life.

If you feel uncertain, consult a specialist healer. Hypnotherapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), kinesiology, homeopathy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Response), spiritual healing, reiki, rebirthing, Shamanism - all these things could help.

Another thing you can do, is a meditation where you go back and talk with your ancestors. Find out what they did and how they lived, then approach the problem with them. If they have made mistakes which are affecting you now, forgive them and tell them they are forgiven.

If you are having problems with forgiving your ancestors, then tell them that you are 'willing to forgive them'. Not only will you be releasing them from their torment, you will be helping yourself. All that is required is your heartfelt intention to forgive and this will begin the healing process for your entire family.

Remember by making contact with your ancestors, forgiving them where needed and making peace, you can free them, yourself and even your descendents. The sooner you start, the better you will feel and a sense of emotional freedom will envelope you as you free both yourself and your entire family. It's an interesting journey!

Extagen: Does Extagen Have Side Effects?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by George Spence

By now, you are probably already well aware of the numerous benefits that Extagen can bring to you, not only in terms of increased penis size but also in your general sex life. One possible further benefit that many users probably will not anticipate at first, is that the improvement that you will experience in your sex life may serve to improve your relationship with your partner as well. All of these benefits, along with untold others, are precisely the reasons why so many men have gone over to the Extagen method of addressing their particular concerns.

Of course with the huge number of penis enlargement devices and products on the market today, you may well wonder what makes Extagen so special. It would not be wholly unreasonable for you to wonder such a thing as you have probably already been subjected to the positive barrage of advertisements on the Internet, all claiming to increase your penis size in measures never before imaginable.

In particular, the email spammers that we all know and love to hate seem to have an affinity for bombarding our email inboxes with tons of letters hawking their wares. It is natural then in the midst of this blizzard of advertising that you have some reservations about the effectiveness of Extagen.

More importantly however are the concerns you may have about Extagen's side effects.

The good news is that with the number of users who have already tried and continue to use Extagen, no harmful side effects have ever been reported. This is particularly comforting considering that Extagen has had many users from all age groups, from all over the world.

You should be aware however that Extagen contains Yohimbe extract, so if you have high blood pressure or any other type of medical condition, you should consult with a physician before using it.

Curvaceous Ladies - Ready To Feel Fantastic

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Question - Are you aware that today's woman is about 5' 4" and a size 14?

If you are a plus size woman, you can feel left out in the cold after seeing all those skinny girls on the TV, bill boards etc.

Follow these suggestions/tips - you'll soon start loving your curves:-

1. They say retail therapy works a treat and it sure does - take some time for you and pamper yourself!! Get a few of your girl friends, have shopping spree, lunch and a treatment – go on a new hair cut or a manicure makes you feel brilliant.

2. Do some exercise and have fun - enjoy yourself – I'm sure the dog will love you been taken out for a long walk (just wrap up warm in the cold weather and take a drink of water in the hot weather), make new friends by visiting your local gym and see what classes are available! You'll soon see you energy levels and vitality grow.

3. One of the best ways to increase your own self confidence is sexy underwear. treat yourself with a sexy, new full figure bra and matching briefs. Indulge yourself in a new, sexy bra and matching panties. Since self image is all about loving yourself, how better to love yourself than to treat yourself to gorgeous lingerie?

4. Show off your best features – whether it's your shoulders, bottoms, cleavage, curves or legs – look at the stare to see how they do it – seemingly effortlessness!! Take Beyonce, Cameron Diaz or Penelope Cruz – they all know which lingerie works for them and how to work it.

5. Let go of dieting and surround yourself with friends who are interested in whom you are rather than what dress size you are. Embrace your curves and love you voluptuousness – let the world open up for you.

6. The Flora London Marathon has given many of us some incentive to get active – not only to improve our fitness levels and well-being but to give us that ‘good feeling'. Doing 30 minutes a day brisk walking is fantastic exercise and this is the best time of year to start – what beats going for an early morning or evening walk in the spring time?

7. Go on - treat yourself to a special pamper day with friends (you deserve it!!)? Check out your local spas and retreats for any special offers that they may be running – what could be better than relaxing by the pool side, steaming in the sauna, receiving a full body massage followed by a mouth watering meal with your close friends – you're worth it!

8. It's time to start shaping up for your summer break – not only will you feel better but you'll look FANTASTIC – try exercise that it enjoyable and fun such as family game of cricket, bike riding with friends or taking part in a Charity Fun Run/Walk.

9. Part of improving your self image and embracing your body is being proud and showing yourself off. Learn which styles flatter your best features - remember, finding the right clothes is never about the size, it's about measurements and cut.

10. Ensure you are wearing the right size bra, so that you get excellent support and an impressive flattering shape.

11. Stick to smooth bras for wearing under fitted or sheer tops as these are best for not showing through these coloured tops.

12. Wear streamline or fitted shapes - more flattering than baggy clothes. Choose tops with seams or darts under the bust - these will define your waist and make you look slimmer.

13. Stretch fabrics like knits and cotton Lycra are great if you want to emphasise your shape, but remember to wear a plain or smooth bra underneath tighter tops.

14. It is important to choose round, scooped and V-necklines as they tend to be more flattering for bigger boobs than high necklines.

Spray Tan Solutions - A Guide To Buying & Choosing Spray Tan

ป้ายกำกับ:

By Richard C Brown

Spray Tan Solution comes in many sizes & varieties & it would be impossible to cover all the variations here, but I will attempt to offer a few points which are worth considering when purchasing spray tan solution (S.T.S).

STS is usually applied via an HVLP (High Volume Low Power) or airbrush system. The solution once applied produces a tan which generally develops over the next 5 – 10 hours. The tan wears off over the next 1-3 weeks.

STS contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is a colourless chemical (it is derived from sugar cane) that interacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a brown colour change. Since these dead skin cells are constantly being shed, the colour change produced by DHA usually lasts about five to ten days but there are reports of tans lasting upto four weeks.

DHA is not absorbed through the skin into the body and it has no known toxicity. DHA was first discovered by the Germans in the late 1920's & has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years.

STS can also contain other ingredients which can affect the quality of the tan & the durability of that tan. Some of these ingredients can include Aloe Vera which will help sustain the tan through skin moiturisation & Eurythrolose which has a similar effect to DHA but because it is very expensive it can be left out of some cheaper STS’s.

Many STS’s quote the % of DHA which can act as a guide to darkness of the tan they should perhaps quote the Eurythrolose content as well. A good STS is in fact a balance of all the ingredients, simply going for a higher DHA is not always the best way to go. It is for this reason that you should be wary of companies which seem to offer STS in many different % DHA as often they simply add more drops of pure DHA but fail to balance the solution with proprietary ingredients such as Eurythrolose. Generally the higher the DHA content the longer it will take to dry & the tackier it will feel on the skin & the more chance you have of rubbing it off before the DHA has had time to “take”, this can produce a patchy affect. More care must be taken when dealing with solution which is a higher DHA. The strongest spray tan (at 15% DHA) is Siennasol Extreme.

STS is usually available in tinted or clear. Most people go for the tinted as it can sometimes be easier to see where you have been, however with a bit of experience & a good application regime clear STS can sometimes be the preferred solution for the more experienced spray tan technician, as it stops the solution staining cloths, walls, carpets etc. Clients love to see their actual tan develop over time. The bronze pigment bares no relation to the final tan & will wash off after their first shower.

Because of these variations it is always a good idea to try a tan before you commit to that five litre bottle. Also ensure that you are buying fresh stock, & if you decant it ensure it is into a suitable HDPE plastic bottles. STS should be stored in a cool dark place (preferably a fridge).

STS may not be suitable for everyone occasionally some people can have an allergic reaction to DHA. There are also certain skin conditions which may result in an uneven, unattractive "tan." These conditions include skin that has been previously damaged by the sun, "older" skin, mottled or freckled skin and scars. Care should also be taken to prevent DHA colouration of the hair and nails. It should also be noted that a sunless "tan" is not really a suntan and affords no protection whatsoever against the skin damage the sun may cause.

It has been known for tans to last upto four weeks, sometimes it can just come down to an individuals skin type however there are steps the client can take before application, which will help the tan to last longer, these can include a full body exfoliation (with particular attention paid to knees & elbows). Exfoliating basically eliminates the already-dead skin cells, which means that the spray tan mist will dye the layer of skin that is likely to last for a longer period of time. Encourage the client to not apply any deodorants, perfumes or makeup prior to application, sometimes shaving prior to application can also help prolong the tan. After application clients should be encouraged not to bath for six hours & to keep their skin well moisturised. It should be noted that the STS will only stain the outer layer of the epidermis therefore anything that could encourage exfoliation of this top layer of skin may shorten the life of the tan. If someone exercises daily & showers three times a day then towels themselves down vigorously then the tan may only last a few days.

I am not going to go into the machines (which you can use to apply spray tan) here but you should take into consideration just how noisy some machines can be & the amount of overspray they can produce (particularly the HVLP systems), also you should consider the after sales service you will receive from the

manufacturer. If you are planning to take it up professionally you should also ensure that you receive training from an officially verified & insurable training school. If you are setting up on your own keep records of everything from day one.

Bleeding Between Periods

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Tracee Cornforth

Your period was over just last week and now it's back. Maybe this has been happening regularly the last few months. Maybe it's the first time it has happened to you. Whether it's the first time you have experienced irregular bleeding between periods, or just another month of spotting, metrorrhagia (the medical term for irregular bleeding or spotting between periods) is frustrating and can lead to a lot of worry thinking something is seriously wrong.

What is normal menstruation?

Normal menstrual bleeding lasts about five days, and although it may seem like you are losing a lot more blood, the amount of blood lost during your period is only about two to eight tablespoons. Menstruation occurs on average every 28 days; but, anywhere from 25 to 31 days between periods is considered a normal menstrual cycle.

When should you worry about bleeding?

If you are post-menopausal, or younger than 11 and vaginal bleeding occurs you should consult your physician.

It's important to be sure that bleeding is coming from your vagina and not from your rectum or urine. The best time for your doctor to determine the cause of menstrual problems is when bleeding is not active.

What causes bleeding between periods?

Although the cause of irregular bleeding can vary according to individual health situations, some of the more common causes include:

  • Abortion
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Beginning or stopping oral contraceptives or estrogens
  • Low thyroid levels
  • Stress
  • IUDs occasionally cause slight spotting
  • Injury to the vagina from insertion of objects, from malignant cancers, or from vaginal infections
  • Certain drugs such as anticoagulants
  • Vaginal dryness
  • GYN procedures such as CONE biopsy or cervical cauterization

If bleeding is heavy, bed rest may be recommended. Keep a record of the number of pads or tampons that you use so that your physician can determine whether bleeding is abnormally heavy. It's best to avoid taking aspirin because it can prolong bleeding. Whenever you experience irregular bleeding from unknown causes it is wise to call your physician for an appointment, as well as when bleeding occurs after menopause or when other symptoms are present.

Should I See My Doctor?

When you visit your physician your medical history will be taken and a pelvic exam will be performed. You should be ready to answer certain questions relating to the timing of your irregular bleeding, as well as the quality of bleeding, and other factors and symptoms. Your physician may also do a Pap smear and/or an endometrial biopsy if he feels it is necessary. Some of the questions your physician is likely to ask include:
  • How long have you experienced bleeding between periods? Does it happen every month or is this the first time? What day during your menstrual cycle does the bleeding begin? How long does it last?
  • Do you experience menstrual cramps when irregular bleeding occurs? How heavy is the bleeding? How may pads or tampons do you need?
  • Does anything make bleeding worse? Does anything make it better? Is bleeding worse with increased physical activity? Are you experiencing an increase in stress?
  • Do you have any other symptoms such as pelvic pain, increased bruising, difficulty swallowing, pain or burning during urination? Is there blood in your bowel movements or urine?

It's also important to advise your physician if you are pregnant or have had a recent miscarriage or abortion.

If you have had a D&C, your physician should know this as well. Remember to inform your physician about any prescription or over-the-counter medications (including herbal supplements) that you are taking. The type and size of tampons can sometimes be a helpful clue to help your physician to determine the cause of metrorrhagia. Your physician will also ask you how old your were when you started having periods, if you are sexually active, and whether you have experienced bleeding between periods in the past. If you have experienced any injuries, or had medical or surgical treatments, this is also important to tell your physician.

If you are currently using oral contraceptives your physician should be aware of this: bleeding between periods can sometimes be caused by something as simple as not taking birth control pills at the exact same time each day.

Be prepared to answer these questions when you visit your physician. The treatment your physician prescribes will depend, to a large extent, on your answers to his questions, as well as the findings of your pelvic exam and/or other tests he orders.

A Simple Guide To Chickenpox

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

What is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a mild illness common among children but can occur at any age.

A fever appears followed by an itchy rash of spots that look like blisters all over the body on the second or third day and may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms.

What causes Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus.

What are the Symptoms of Chickenpox?

Chickenpox usually starts with a mild fever of 37.7 - 38.8 Celsus with or without headache.

It is followed by a red, itchy rash on the skin that usually appears first on the abdomen or back and face, and then spreads to almost everywhere else on the body.

The rash begins as multiple small, red bumps and rapidly develop into thin-walled blisters filled with clear fluid, which becomes cloudy. The blister wall breaks, leaving open sores, which finally crust over to become dry, brown scabs.

Chickenpox blisters can also occur in the mouth causing pain and discomfort when eating.

Some children have abdominal pain, sore throat, headache, and in some cases a severe cough.

Younger children often have milder symptoms and fewer blisters than older children or adults.

When is Chickenpox contagious?

Chickenpox is contagious from about 2 days before the rash appears and lasts until all the blisters are crusted over.

A child with chickenpox should be kept out of school until all blisters have dried, usually about 10 days.

Chickenpox is very contagious most kids with a sibling who's been infected will get it as well, showing symptoms about 2 weeks after the first child does.

To help keep the virus from spreading, make sure your children wash their hands frequently, particularly before eating and after using the bathroom.

And keep a child with chickenpox away from unvaccinated siblings as much as possible.

Pregnant women and anyone with immune system problems should not be near a person with chickenpox. If a pregnant woman who hasn't had chickenpox in the past contracts it (especially in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy), the fetus is at risk for birth defects. If she develops chickenpox just before or after the child is born, the newborn is at risk for serious health complications.

How to avoid getting Chickenpox?

Since May 2006, after FDA approval of the vaccine, Doctors recommend that kids receive the chickenpox vaccine when they are 12 to 15 months old and a booster shot at 4 to 6 years old. The vaccine is about 70% to 85% effective at preventing mild infection, and more than 95% effective in preventing moderate to severe forms of the infection.

Healthy children who have had chickenpox do not need the vaccine they usually have lifelong protection against the illness.

How to treat Chickenpox?

Treatment of Virus:A virus causes chickenpox, so the doctor won't prescribe antibiotics. However, antibiotics may be required if the sores become infected by bacteria.

The antiviral medicine acyclovir may be prescribed for people with chickenpox who are at risk for complications. The drug, which can make the infection less severe, must be given within the first 24 hours after the rash appears.

Treatment of Symptoms:You can help relieve the itchiness, fever, and discomfort of chickenpox by:

1. Using cool wet compresses or giving baths in cool or lukewarm water every 3 to 4 hours for the first few days.

2. Patting (not rubbing) the body dry.

3. Putting calamine lotion on itchy areas or acyclovir cream lightly over the rashes

4. Giving your child foods that are soft and bland because chickenpox in the mouth may make drinking or eating difficult.

5. Make the child drink lots of fluids

6. Anti itch medicine like antihistamine or pain relieving medicine like paracetamol may be given to relieve itch or pain.

7. As much as possible, discourage scratching. This can be difficult for the child, so consider putting mittens or socks on your child's hands to prevent scratching during sleep. In addition, trim fingernails and keep them clean to help lessen the effects of scratching, including broken blisters and infection.

What are the complications of Chickenpox?
Typically, chickenpox is a mild illness, but can affect some infants, teens, adults, and people with weak immune systems more severely.

Some people can develop serious bacterial infections involving the skin(especially in children with eczema), lungs(pneumonia) and the brain (encephalitis).

What is the outlook for Chickenpox?

Most children recovered completely from chickenpox within 7-14 days of the onset of symptoms.

Adults may take a longer time to recover(10-21 days) and the symptoms are more severe.

Pox marks due to infections of the skin and deep scratching of blisters may remain and serve as a reminder of chickenpox.

A person usually has only one episode of chickenpox, but the virus can lie dormant within the body and cause a different type of skin eruption later in life called shingles (or herpes zoster).

A Description of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/CFIDS/ME)

ป้ายกำกับ:

By Anne Mills

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, CFIDS, ME) is an insidious, frightening illness that causes profound disruptions to life. It drains energy, intelligence, memory and personality. It is absolute exhaustion.

CFS brings great difficulties. It has no known cause, is effectively incurable and there is not even an established approach to treatment. It is maddeningly unpredictable in its daily severity, its set of symptoms as well as their manifestation.

This illness also generally deeply affects the lives of those closest to the sufferer as it steals that someone away from them – the person they knew either disappears or is, at the least, quite changed. Physical and emotional burdens are placed upon them as well as the sufferer.

CFS is not terminal or directly life threatening, but this does not diminish its devastating effects. It is usually not visible, but this does not mean it is trivial. It can be difficult to determine, but this does not make it any less sinister. It is regarded as a serious illness because it is an impediment to leading a ‘normal’ life.

This is no over-dramatisation of a condition. The fact is, CFS is characterised by a lack of appreciation of its devastating effects and is therefore often trivialised.

CFS is typically misunderstood as just ’tiredness’, however CFS is very, very different to tiredness or fatigue experienced at some time by most people. It is more accurately described as an energy issue - no energy, extreme exhaustion.

However, fatigue and exhaustion are not the sum of CFS – it encompasses a whole range of other ailments or conditions. It amounts to experiencing several illnesses either all at once or progressively, with no apparent pattern or enough meaning to enable accurate prognosis by those qualified to reach some conclusions. That the illness varies with each individual complicates matters further.

Possibly the most frustrating, and lesser known, feature of CFS is the fatigue of the mind often referred to as ‘brain fog’. Cognitive malfunction and memory loss are the most prevalent signs that something is terribly amiss with the brain. The powers of comprehension, deduction and reasoning vanish - then the sufferer cannot remember anything anyway! Being rendered mute when all vocabulary disappears leads people to question the unfortunate sufferer’s sanity.

An aspect that always seems to puzzle people is that sufferers often look well. This is the invisibility of CFS – just because the outside looks fine, it is not always an accurate indication of what is/is not going on inside!

At times when energy levels may be a little higher, sufferers can ‘perform’ much better and therefore may be judged as being ‘better’. This is another totally exasperating facet of CFS – the illness constantly fluctuates, both in severity and characteristics. One day may represent total physical collapse, the next with a little more energy but afflicted with ‘brain fog’, the following unable to get up due to pain, intestinal upset or a night of very little sleep, then a day when there is sufficient energy to take a short walk. It never leaves, though.

Chronic in its name helps to describe the relentlessness of CFS – as yet there is no cure and it can continue forever. This sounds bleak and for some their lives remain exceedingly bleak. The more fortunate are able to manage the illness and gain some gradual improvement so they are able to lead a viable life. Some actually achieve a level of recovery, but live with the threat of any or all symptoms returning if they do not maintain a carefully controlled lifestyle.

Some emotional instability is not surprising once the depths of this illness are realised. Learning to accept CFS and deal with any resultant emotions is difficult enough, without having thought and reasoning functions not working. It’s like waging war on a number of fronts without any prior knowledge of how to approach a conflict, without any intelligence (literally!), no idea of acquiring weapons and no troops. Little wonder sufferers become agitated or depressed – or both.

Imagine waking up each day with flu…
every day, every week, every month… year after year…

Then, on top of the flu, you are sleep deprived…

Remember how it feels after partying hard or studying for a couple of days and nights without sleeping,
or when a baby or something else has kept you awake for nights on end…

All About The Sinus

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by Amy Jo Abbey

There are many people that suffer from sinus problems. A sinus is a cavity in the skull which is used to make the skull lighter, give room for the skull to grow, and to cool down the inhaled air. There are four types of sinuses in humans which include the maxillary, ethmoid, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses. The maxillary sinus cavity is located below the eye and to the side of the nose below the cheeks. The ethmoid sinus and the sphenoid sinus are some of the most functional sinuses and are located between the eyes and under the nose. The frontal sinus cavity is located in the middle of the forehead.

The sinuses can cause many problems. The most common problem is a sinus infection. A sinus infection is caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities. The blockage begins usually when a person has a cold or allergy. The sinus cavity lining becomes swollen when a cold or allergy exists. When bacteria get into the sinus cavities, they attack the swollen lining which then causes greater inflammation. The cilia are tiny hairs in the sinuses which are used to flush out bacteria and mucus. When the inflammation from the bacteria occurs, the cilia can no longer flush it out therefore the bacteria and mucus become trapped and the infection begins.

There are many symptoms which may occur with a sinus infection. Generally, a person may experience cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip. When the sinus infection lasts for twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic and can have additional symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell and the person may also become fatigued.

There are many forms of treatment for a sinus infection. Nasal sprays are one common treatment. Nasal sprays work by distributing saline solution up into the sinus cavities. Nasal sprays are meant to moisten the cilia so that the trapped bacteria and mucus can be washed out. The problem with nasal sprays however is that they have large particle sizes that cannot make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection. Oral antibiotics are also a frequently used treatment. Oral antibiotics work on infections by flowing through the blood stream to the infected area. Oral antibiotics are usually ineffective when it comes to sinus infections due to the fact that there are only a small amount of blood vessels in the sinus cavities which makes it difficult for an efficient amount of antibiotic, along with anti-fungals and anti-inflammatories, to make it to the sinus infection. Another treatment that may be used is irrigation. Irrigation, like nasal sprays, is meant to moisten the cilia so that it can function properly. Also like nasal sprays, it is difficult for it to make it through the inflammation and to the sinuses. Irrigation is also usually a very messy treatment.

Our sinuses have important functions and it is important to keep them clear from infection. A sinus infection can become an inconvenience in many ways and also may cause future problems for the sinus cavities. It is best to take care of a sinus infection at the beginning and to prevent it from becoming chronic.

Deciding What To Do When You Have A Pet Allergy

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Evelyn Lim

Do you suspect that you have a pet allergy? You may have noticed that your eyes would get watery or you would wheeze every time you play with your cat or dog in your room. Your pet may be a new pet or you may already have had it for some years now. Either way, you just do not feel good after being near it.

At the same time, even though you have actually determined that you have a pet allergy, you simply cannot bring yourself to part with it. You have grown so attached to it that it is impossible to give it away.

To help decide if you should keep your pet or not, there are some factors that you need to consider. First, you need to understand what your pet allergy is about. A pet allergy does not mean that you are allergic to your cat or dog per se. It is the animal skin dander that you are allergic to. The dander is what will trigger the itchy, water eyes, sneezing, and affect the nasal passage. You may be just a little affected by your pet allergy or your symptoms can also be extremely severe.

If you wish to keep your pet, a conventional treatment is to use drugs to keep your allergic reactions under control. You may obtain pet allergy medication either over the counter or via a prescription from your doctor. If you are near your pet everyday, you may have to take medications everyday. However, this is hardly a desirable situation as drug medications can bring about side effects. You may not have realized this but taking drug medications on a daily basis for a prolonged period of time would take a toll on your health.

There are other ways to help reduce your pet allergy symptoms. Keeping your cat or dog out of your room and washing your hands after playing with it are some things that you can do.

Developing a pet allergy is pretty common. It is often said that your risk to getting a pet allergy is reduced if you have been exposed to a cat or dog at an early age. However, this is often debated on many forums and stands to be disputed.

If you decide to keep your dog or cat, then consider what you need to do to keep your pet allergy symptoms under control. If you have severe pet allergy symptoms despite taking preventative measures, then you may need to prioritize what you consider as important - your health or your pet.

How to Reverse and Prevent Heart Disease – The Easy Way

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Mohd. Sufendi

When you read or hear stories of someone having a heart attack, what are your thoughts?

Do you feel for the sufferer? Do you learn from it? Or do you care less? And think that it could not happen to you?

If this is your response, then do consider that heart attack patients once though the same way too.

Everyone has the risk of experiencing cardiovascular diseases and heart ailments.

Cardiovascular diseases is the common name that referred to several conditions involving the heart and the blood channel.

Any ailment that causes the heart or the blood channel to fail to function well is called cardiovascular diseases.

The coronary heart disease happens when the channel that provide blood to the heart and the brain (the artery) is choked or damaged.

If the blood channel gets choked, the blood circulation to the heart and the brain reduces or completely stop.

This might cause various cardiovascular problems like heart attack, brain damage, chest pain and heart failure. The heart is a small organ, only weighing 0.25 kilogram and beats 72 times a minute.

Try clenching both fists and place in the middle of the chest. This is the size of your heart compared to the size of the body. If we are to lay them out, the blood channel will be 27,000 kilometers long. Do you think that the small heart is able to pump 5.6 liters of blood, three times a minute for that distance?

If you are thin, this task could be possibly carried out easily but for those who are obese, the heart is always forced to bear the difficult burden and work hard to so that blood can be pumped to every area of the body that requires blood.

Now count your heartbeat per minute. If your heartbeat far exceeds the normal count of 72 beats a minute at rest, it's a sign that you must do something to confirm that your heart is functioning well.

It seems everyone knows, that heart disease is one of the deadly diseases in most countries. Almost 8 percent hospital fatalities are caused cardiovascular diseases.

One might be more inclined to suffer from cardiovascular disease compared to another. The risk factor of heart disease can be divided into two; factors that cannot be reversed and factors that can be prevented.

The factor that cannot be reversed is sex and age. Male, aged above 45 years or female aged above 55 years with a family history of heart diseases. For example, if heart attack occurs at a young age, whether it happens to the father or brother below 55 years old and the mother or sister below 65 years old.

Most cases of heart attack stems from an unhealthy lifestyle which include smoking, lack of physical activities (exercise), diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure though it can be prevented.

Coronary heart disease usually takes a long time to form and it involves the following factors such as:-

- High blood pressure

- High cholesterol

- Improper diet

- Lack of exercise

- Obesity

- Smoking

- Diabetes

The increase in heart disease fatalities has prompted many health organisations to adopt advice on how to reverse and prevent heart disease.

Most people do not think that they are at risk of heart diseases. Even if they know the facts, most choose not to seek advice or medical treatment. Thus the need to know how to reverse and prevent heart disease becomes more apparent.

Everyday, many people have their lifestyles 'paralyzed' by heart diseases even if it can be prevented. The easiest way on how to reverse and prevent heart disease is by reducing weight by way of a healthy diet and consistent exercise.

These two methods not only reduce weight but at the same time increase one's energy level and have a healthier heart. This message needs to be spread throughout.

It's never too late to learn how to reverse and prevent heart disease. Age does not matter but do seek a doctor's advice before starting on an exercise regime if you are:-

- Male above 35 years of age

- Female above 40 years of age

- If you experience a problem of excessive weight; more than 7kg above normal

- If you have doubts over your health condition

- Have a history of medication or undergoing treatment and medication

- Have not exercised or only exercise occasionally

With that, it has been said that remedies from nature are much safer and more effective than prescription drugs and needless surgery as well.

Did you find the how to reverse and prevent heart disease - the easy way useful? You can learn a lot more about how to reverse and prevent heart disease without drugs and surgery => Reverse And Prevent Heart Disease

Natural Remedies for Menopause

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by juliet cohen

Menopause literally means the physiological cessation of menstrual cycles. The root cause of menopause is not what is happening to the uterus, the whole process of menopause is triggered by the faltering and shutting down of the ovaries. This process usually normally occurs more or less in midlife. Menopause, or the permanent end of menstruation and fertility, is a natural biological process, not a medical illness. Hormonal changes cause the physical symptoms of menopause, but mistaken beliefs about the menopausal transition are partly to blame for the emotional ones. First, menopause doesn't mean the end is near -- you've still got as much as half your life to go. Second, menopause will not snuff out your femininity. Menopause is a normal part of aging; about 70% of woman experience symptoms. Lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, and medications can help. Menopause occurs as the ovaries begin to fail to be able to produce an egg or ovum each and every month, which in turn after a number of years, leads to the somewhat chaotic shutting down of the whole reproductive system.

Menopause is the time in a woman's life when the function of the ovaries ceases. Main effect of the menopause is a greatly reduced production of the hormone oestrogen. Some menopausal women suffer psychologically from the awareness that they have come to the end of reproductive life. The menopause is often viewed as a significant stage in the ageing process. The menopause involves the end of egg production (ovulation) by the ovaries. However, menstrual cycles can still occur, without ovulation taking place, as the menopause approaches. For this reason, pregnancy is very rare after the age of 50. A woman's periods do not usually stop suddenly, although sometimes this does happen. They usually become less frequent, the odd period is missed, and then they stop altogether. Many prescription medications and natural remedies exist to prevent and control high cholesterol and bone loss, which can occur at menopause. Estrogen is a well-established prescription therapy for hot flashes. Estrogen also helps build bone mass, reduces the risk of fractures, and improves cholesterol.

Some women decide to take herbal, natural, or plant-based products to help their symptoms. Some women turn to herbal remedies or to certain estrogen-like chemicals in plants (called phytoestrogens) for help. Many people will take multi-vitamins to ensure their bodies receive all of the nutrients they need to stay healthy. B-Vitamins: This family of vitamins can be a big help in coping with premature menopause, both in terms of helping combat symptoms and fighting negative long-term risks. B vitamins can keep your energy levels up. Bioidentical hormone herapy. Some women visit alternative medicine doctors and get a prescription for these products, which are made from different plant hormones that are like those in a woman's body. Black cohosh may also help with cramps, heavy periods and other menstrual irregularities. Kava Kava appears to be a big help in reducing anxiety, fighting depression, and leveling mood swings, kava kava has been shown to be quite effective. Eating soy and their isoflavones are the most popular natural way to increase estrogen.

Home Remedies for Menopause

1. Flaxseed nutrient high in phytoestrogens (especially lignans), flaxseed also is high in omega-3 fatty acids -- a key helper in fighting heart disease.

2. Red Clover is another phytoestrogen which also is high in bioflavonoids.

3. Vitamin E and Citrus Bioflavonoids-This combination is a hot-flash buster -- with studies showing that taking these two supplements together helps combat hot flashes.

4. Vitamin E is also good for helping with dryness.

5. Vitamin A or beta carotene can help menopause.

6. Vitamin A helps maintain tissues, skin, and mucous membranes -- which can help fight back against dryness.

7. Calcium: A definite must to help prevent osteoporosis, calcium can also help lower blood pressure, reduce triglyceride levels.

8. Black cohosh may also help with cramps, heavy periods and other menstrual irregularities.

9. Kava Kava herb that appears to be a big help in reducing anxiety, fighting depression, and leveling mood swings, kava kava has been shown to be quite effective.

10. Valerian-It's used widely in Europe to treat sleep disturbances, as well as for nervousness and menstrual problems.

Elevated Serum Calcium - Dangers of Elevated Serum Calcium

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

By John Gibb

Serum calcium is a blood test which indicates the level of calcium in our blood. Elevated serum calcium means abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood. This condition occurs as a result of some malfunctioning and is dangerous for long-term health.

Serum calcium should be performed after every 6 months or so. High calcium levels cause many complications including high blood pressure and constant headache. Malfunctioning of the parathyroid glands is the major cause of elevated serum calcium. This disease is known as parathyroid disease or hyperparathyroidism. Treatment is required to correct this condition.

Parathyroid glands secrete a hormone known as parathyroid hormone or PTH. This hormone is responsible for transporting calcium from bones to the bloodstream where it is needed to carry out many activities. If this hormone level becomes high due to some other health complication, calcium level also increases. As a result, more and more calcium is transported from the bones and make them weak.

People who have abnormally high calcium level in the blood are more likely to become victims of many kinds of cancer. These cancers include kidney cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer.

Too much vitamin D or phosphorus in the blood makes a lot of calcium to be absorbed by the bloodstream. This is also a cause of elevated serum calcium. Multiple Myeloma is a kind of cancer associated with the bones. Here it grows without notice and ultimately drains all calcium deposits from the centre of the bones to the blood. This condition occurs as a result of too much protein and high calcium levels in the blood.

Doctors normally recommend people with hypercalcaemia to eat a balanced diet, exercise on a regular basis and eat good-quality calcium supplements. These calcium tablets or supplements are specially manufactured to provide just the right amount of calcium to the body on a daily basis. They are not only good for people who are calcium deficient but also those who need to control their blood calcium level.

Good-quality calcium supplements are now easily available on the market. Recently, it has been discovered that coral calcium, which is a special kind of calcium carbonate, is very effective in overcoming calcium deficiency and fighting against many diseases. Okinawan coral calcium which is obtained from waters around Japan is particularly useful as it is the purest of all calcium carbonate salts available around the world. It helps to control elevated serum calcium and cures man degenerative diseases.

For optimal bone and joint health, we have been using a special natural calcium formula and for good reason, this formula is known as Bone Protect We have personally been using this formula for over 3 years with excellent health results.

You can learn more about our product of choice and why we use this product above all other calcium formulas at optimal bone health

What Is Schizophrenia?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By: Arthur Buchanan

Although an exact definition of schizophrenia still evades medical researchers, the evidence indicates more and more strongly that schizophrenia is a severe disturbance of the brain's functioning. In The Broken Brain: The Biological Revolution in Psychiatry, Dr. Nancy Andreasen states "The current evidence concerning the causes of schizophrenia is a mosaic. It is quite clear that multiple factors are involved.

These include changes in the chemistry of the brain, changes in the structure of the brain, and genetic factors. Viral infections and head injuries may also play a role....finally, schizophrenia is probably a group of related diseases, some of which are caused by one factor and some by another." (p. 222).

There are billions of nerve cells in the brain. Each nerve cell has branches that transmit and receive messages from other nerve cells. The branches release chemicals, called neurotransmitters, which carry the messages from the end of one nerve branch to the cell body of another. In the brain afflicted with schizophrenia, something goes wrong in this communication system.

Sometimes schizophrenia has a rapid or sudden onset. Very dramatic changes in behaviour occur over a few weeks or even a few days. Sudden onset usually leads fairly quickly to an acute episode. Some people have very few such attacks in a lifetime; others have more. Some people lead relatively normal lives between episodes. Others find that they are very listless. depressed, and unable to function well.

In some, the illness may develop into what is known as chronic schizophrenia. This is a severe, long-lasting disability characterized by social withdrawal, lack of motivation, depression, and blunted feelings. In addition, moderate versions of acute symptoms such as delusions and thought disorder may be present in the chronic disorder.

Psychiatrists divide the symptoms of schizophrenia into "positive" and "negative" categories. This can be confusing. Dr. E. Fuller Torrey explains that the adjective "positive" "...denotes those symptoms which are present and should be absent..."; "negative" those "...that are absent but should be present...." (Torrey, Surviving Schizophrenia: A Family Manual, revised edition, p. 79). This classification system is believed to be helpful for research purposes. It may suggest more promising forms of treatment and may help predict the outcome of the illness.

Positive Symptoms

Hallucinations are thought to be a result of over-sharpening of the senses and of the brain's inability to interpret and respond appropriately to incoming messages. A person with schizophrenia may hear voices or see visions that are not there, or experience unusual sensations on or in his or her body. Auditory hallucinations, the most common form, involve hearing voices that are perceived to be inside or outside of the person's body. Sometimes the voices are complimentary, reassuring, neutral. Sometimes they are threatening, punitive, frightening, and may command the individual to do things that may be harmful.

Delusions are strange and steadfast beliefs that are held only by the observer and that remain despite obvious evidence to the contrary. For example, red and green traffic signals may be interpreted by someone with schizophrenia as instructions from space aliens. Many people with schizophrenia who suffer from persecution delusions are termed "paranoid." They believe that they are being watched, spied upon, or plotted against. A common delusion is that one's thoughts are being broadcast over the radio or television, or that other people are controlling the ill person's thoughts. Delusions are resistant to reason. It is of no use to argue that the delusion is not "real."

Thought disorder refers to problems in the way that a person with schizophrenia processes and organizes thoughts. For example, the person may be unable to connect thoughts into logical sequences. "Racing thoughts" come and go so rapidly that it is not possible to "catch them." Because thinking is disorganized and fragmented, the ill person's speech is often incoherent and illogical. Thought disorder is frequently accompanied by inappropriate emotional responses: words and mood do not appear in tune with each other. The result may be something like laughing when speaking of sombre or frightening events.

Altered sense of self is a term describing a blurring of the ill person's feeling of who he or she is. It may be a sensation of being bodiless, or non-existent as a person. The ill individual may not be able to tell where his or her body stops and the rest of the world begins. It may be as if the body is separated from the person.

Negative Symptoms

Lack of motivation or apathy is a lack of energy or interest in life that is often confused with laziness. Because the ill person has very little energy, he or she may not be able to do much more than sleep and pick at meals. Life for the person with schizophrenia can be experienced as devoid of interest.

Blunted feelings or blunted affect refers to a flattening of the emotions. Because facial expressions and hand gestures may be limited or nonexistent, the ill individual seems unable to feel or show any emotion at all. This does not mean that the individual does not feel emotions and is not receptive to kindness and consideration. He or she may be feeling very emotional but cannot express it outwardly. Blunted affect may become a stronger symptom as the disease progresses.

Depression involves feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, and may stem in part from realizing that schizophrenia has changed one's life, from realizing that the "special feeling" experienced in the psychotic state is an illusion and that the future looks bleak. Often the person believes that he or she has behaved badly, has destroyed relationships, and is unlovable. Depressed feelings are very painful and may lead to talk of, or attempts at, suicide. Biological changes in the brain may also contribute to depression.

Social withdrawal may occur as a result of depression, as a result of a feeling of relative safety in being alone, or as a result of being so caught up in one's own feelings and fearing that one cannot manage the company of others. People with schizophrenia frequently lack the resources needed to show interest in socializing.

It is most common for schizophrenia to attack young people for the first time between 15 and 30 years of age, but the illness may develop as late as age 40. It occurs in all races, in all cultures, in all social classes, and in both sexes. The risk for anyone in the population becoming schizophrenic is generally accepted as one percent. This means that about 250,000 Canadians will suffer from this illness at some point in their lives.

Schizophrenia is not now curable, but through the use of anti-psychotic medication and psychotherapy, the positive symptoms of schizophrenia can usually be controlled. Full recovery may occur, but it cannot be predicted. In some cases people get better on their own. Remission usually comes within the first two years and is rare after having the disease for five years. With advancing age, particularly after 40, life for the person with schizophrenia often becomes less difficult: positive symptoms tend to diminish and medication can often be taken at a low dose or less frequently.

An Illness Not Understood: The Stigma Of Schizophrenia

The stigma of schizophrenia is a barrier to those trying to rehabilitate themselves. It is also a very real problem for their families. Therefore, those involved with schizophrenia are concerned about the dozens of misconceptions about the illness. Schizophrenia is a disease that is not well understood and is greatly feared. Most of what people think they know about schizophrenia is wrong. People confuse schizophrenia with split personality or multiple personality. They believe that people with schizophrenia are violent and dangerous. A limited number are, of course, but media publicity about particularly frightening and bizarre crimes of violence committed by people with mental disorders has left the public with the impression that most persons with schizophrenia are violent. This is not true. The majority are not.

However, wide differences in the effect that schizophrenia has on different people and the difficulty in understanding the actions of someone in a deeply psychotic state, whose thinking is thoroughly confused, reinforce the public's concern. Some believe that people with schizophrenia have weak personalities and have "chosen" their madness. Many believe that schizophrenia is the result of bad parenting and childhood trauma.

One parent stated that he was often accused of abandoning his daughter when he took her to the hospital. Another parent said that clerks in stores ignored her son when he asked for help or tried to make a purchase. Some religious groups hold the view that the illness is one of God's punishments.

The families consulted believe that it is important to understand how the stigma surrounding schizophrenia developed. The term "schizophrenia" was introduced in 1911 by a Swiss psychiatrist, Eugen Bleuler. The word comes from the Greek schizo meaning "split" and phrenia meaning "mind."

Bleuler wanted to convey the split between what is perceived, what is believed, and what is objectively real. He did not mean that the person with schizophrenia is split into two personalities, but that there is a splitting away of the personality from reality. The concept of "split," however, has led to schizophrenia being confused with multiple personality, a less common and very different psychiatric disorder, much publicized through such stories as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Three Faces of Eve, and Sybil. Today, many health care professionals regret the existence of the term "schizophrenia" because of the confusion and misunderstanding that surround it.

Added to this basic confusion is a history of blame. Families agree that blame is a major stumbling block to seeking and receiving support.

In the late 1800s and the early part of this century, three competing views about the nature of mental illness gained acceptance in the psychiatric profession.

Biological psychiatry grew from the research of Dr. Emil Kraepelin in Germany; psychoanalysis from the findings of Dr. Sigmund Freud and his colleagues in their studies on neuroses in Austria; and behaviourism from the work of Dr. John B. Watson in the United States. Kraepelin's views predominated the thinking of psychiatrists in Europe, while both psychoanalysis and behaviourism (see Glossary) flourished in North America (Andreasen, The Broken Brain, pp. 11-20).

In the 1950s, many North American psychiatrists began to believe that schizophrenia resulted from a form of psychic trauma inflicted on the individual early in life, typically by parents. Mothers of those with schizophrenia were believed to be over-anxious, obsessive, and domineering. These women were labelled "schizophrenogenic."

One mother said she almost understood this. "When you are pushing to get help for your child, it is easy for some to 'put the cart before the horse' and point to this pushiness and tension as the cause of your child's problem, rather than the result of it." Gradually, blame was placed on the family as a unit. Theorists noticed poor family functioning where there was someone with schizophrenia, and confused the effect of the illness with its cause.

Two other theories contributed to the mythology surrounding schizophrenia. The American psychoanalyst Thomas Szasz pronounced that schizophrenia, like all other mental illnesses, is a set of behaviours, not a disease. The late R.D. Laing, a British psychiatrist, suggested that it is really a "healthy" response to an insane world. People burdened with terrible stress act "crazy" in an effort to adapt.

Scientific research and factual data have discredited these theories. Unfortunately, they were all popular enough at one time to have gained public attention. You may still run into health care professionals who will suggest that you "caused" your relative's illness, and that a continuing family relationship may hinder recovery.

Aside from the history of blame, the symptoms of the illness itself can often add to the stigma of schizophrenia. The odd and unpredictable behaviour, poor functioning, or lack of good health habits can be disturbing to others. News coverage on acts of violence or suicides committed by people reported as having schizophrenia serve to add to the stigma, even if unintentionally.

Families often find the stigma difficult to handle. Some try to hide the illness in the family. Others, however, prefer to speak openly about it. They say this gives peace of mind and allows them to join with others to try to remove the stigma.

Ringworm Disease - The Facts

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by juliet cohen

Ringworms" refers to fungal infections that are on the surface of the skin. Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus. Ringworm can affect skin on your body (tinea corporis), scalp (tinea capitis), groin area (tinea cruris, also called jock itch), or feet. Ringworm is a skin and scalp disease caused by several different kinds of fungi. Ringworm on the scalp usually makes a bald patch of scaly skin. People with ringworm on other parts of their skin can have a ring-shaped rash that is reddish and may be itchy. The rash can be dry and scaly or wet and crusty. Ringworm is easily transmitted to humans. About 50% of people living with a ringworm-infected cat will develop the infection. Children and young animals are most susceptible to infections. Ringworm in animals usually appears as a rapidly growing circular patch of broken hair. A 'cigarette ash' dandruff appears on the lesion and sometimes the patch has an inflamed margin. The infection is more common in young animals. In kittens, the patches usually occur on the head and feet. Ringworm of the body appears as flat, spreading ring-shaped areas. The edge is reddish and may be either dry and scaly or moist and crusted.

The term ringworm is a misnomer. It has nothing to do with worms. It is a fungus, or more correctly, one of several fungi that can affect animals and humans. Today, many children, and pet owners get ringworm through direct or indirect contact with the infected hairs or skin of pets. Ringworm of the scalp usually begins as a small pimple which becomes larger in size and leaves scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily. Occasionally, yellowish cuplike crusty areas are seen. With ringworm of the nails, the affected nails become thicker, discolored and brittle, or they become chalky and disintegrate. Ringworm of the body appears as flat, spreading ring-shaped areas. Heat and moisture help fungi grow and thrive, which makes them more common in skin folds such as those in the groin or between the toes. This also accounts for their reputation as being caught from showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Topical shampoo therapy is used in almost every case, especially in longer haired pets. It is common to clip some or all of the hair in some pets to make it more effective. Specific anti fungal cremes are also used when a pet is infected in an area that already has sparse hair growth, or there are small, discrete lesions.

Ringworm Treatment Tips

1. Keep your skin clean and dry.

2. Apply over-the-counter antifungal or drying powders, lotions, or creams.

3. Wash sheets and nightclothes every day while infected.

4. Topical shampoo therapy is used in almost every case, especially in longer haired pets.

5. Do not share clothing, towels, hairbrushes, combs, headgear, or other personal care items.

6. Wear sandals or shoes at gyms, lockers, and pools.

7. Avoid touching pets with bald spots.

8. Antifungal creams are readily available and may be efficient for small lesions.

How to Deal with Sinus Headaches

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

By: Juliet Cohen

Sinus headache is a headache that occurs because your sinuses are congested with mucus. Sinus headache is caused by inflammation of sinus tissue, either due to bacterial infection or allergic reactions. Sinus headaches can be the result of a sinus infection or allergies. Sinus headache pain is due to swelling in the sinus cavities. Sinus headache is one of the many kinds of headaches which is often associated with sinusitis or an inflamed sinus. An inflamed sinus blocked the nasal passage which triggers the pain in your head. Usually, sinus headache pain is due to swelling in the sinus cavities around the nose and eyes. Often caused by allergies or infections, sinus headaches may be accompanied by fever, a stuffy nose, or toothaches. Leaning forward or lying down may increase sinus headache pain. Sinus headaches cause a dull, deep, or severe pain in the front of your head and face. Bending down or leaning over generally makes the pain worse, as does cold and damp weather. Sinus headaches are often worse in the morning, and better by afternoon. Vascular headaches are often mistaken for sinus headaches. Most sinus problems happen when the patient has had a cold or a sore throat. Some occur after a dental infection. Sometimes hay fever or irritation from dust or smoke causes swelling.

They are caused by an inflammation in the passages behind the cheeks, nose, and eyes. A sinus headache is usually being triggered by something you ate in conjunction with an active sinus infection. Migraine can also cause head pain and nasal drainage and be triggered by changes in the weather or season. The pain in a sinus headache is usually localized around the eyes, and you may actually feel some tenderness. Some symptoms of a sinus headache include pain or pressure in the forehead or around the eyes and cheek(s), tender skin and tender bones over and under the eyes. With a sinus headache, you will often deal with post nasal drip, which is a collection of mucus in the back of your throat when you're lying on your back. You may also be congested. These symptoms are also typical of migraine. However, a sinus infection will last considerably longer, and if it becomes worse you may feel generally sick and even have a fever (with migraine you may feel like you have a fever, but you usually don't). Fatigue is common. Stooping down, jarring your head (including with exercise, such as jogging or aerobics), or blowing your nose may make your headache feel worse.

Sinus headache can be problematic the condition is wholly treatable. The treatment of headaches with prophylactic medication begins with low doses. The use of nasal vasoconstrictors and pain pill medicine can be used. Sometimes anticonvulsants such as Tegretol, Depakote, and Dilantin are given for headache treatment. When the condition has been cleared then the treatment for sinus headache pain can begun. Trigger points should be at the top of the list during any examination for headaches and eye pain. When healthcare practitioners have had adequate training and experience, trigger points are easy to locate and treat. The major prescription drugs that are used for headache treatment are beta blockers like Tenormin and Lopressor. Calcium channel blockers such as Cardizem, Dilacor, and Procardia are also used. Doctors may also prescribe antidepressants like Elavil and Zoloft. You can use Serotonin Antagonists like Sansert. Tylenol and Panadol are known as Acetaminophen drugs. Taking an over the counter medication, such as Sudafed, can help with this aliment. Motrin and Advil belong to the group of drugs that are known as Ibuprofen.Sprinkle cayenne pepper on your food. Adding that quick, hot spice to some scrambled eggs in the morning could help that morning pressure with sinusitis.

How Yeast Infection Yogurt Can Help With The Condition

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Katie Rowan

Yogurt contains a bacteria that is known as lactobacillus and this same bacteria stops or perhaps retards any growth of candida, the fungus behind the actual yeast infection. Now this is the reason why the daily intake of yogurt has been proven conclusively in the prevention and treatment of vaginal yeast infection. The human body is a very complex structure as it has many microorganisms, some of which are beneficial and some that are harmful. There exists some sort of balance among these organisms and this balance is so vital for the normal day to day functioning of the body. If is disturbed the body is more prone to be affected by a particular disease.

Yogurt and Yeast Infection: How They Relate

It is widely recognized all over that yogurt is beneficial in the prevention of yeast infection. Firstly though we should know more about the relationship between the yogurt and yeast infection.

Yogurt has been proved to be effective in the treatment of yeast infection because it contains the living cultures of lactobacillus. By the administration of yogurt, the depletion of lactobacillus can be controlled and its stores are replenished. The yogurts should not be expired. For this purpose you need to read the label on the yogurt pack carefully. If it is treated by heat then it would be useless because heat kills the bacteria. And hence there would be no use of administrating the yogurt.

The microorganism responsible for yeast infection is present normally in the skin, vagina and digestive tract. These organisms are kept in check by the bacteria known as lactobacillus. This bacteria is also known as probiotic bacteria. When any condition disturbs the bacteria, the candida gets the opportunity to establish them. Antibiotics kill all the bacteria and this is because they can not distinguish between good bacteria and bad bacteria, so good bacteria is also killed including lactobacillus.

There are some other conditions that promote yeast infection .These conditions are diabetes, HIV. Menopause, pregnancy, and the frequent sexual act or intercourse. It also remains to be said that if you are suffering with yeast infection that you ought to refrain from any sexual activities until that yeast infection has been treated as the condition can be passed on from one partner to another.

Daily ingestion of yogurt helps in preventing yeast infection. If the women suffering from yeast infection add yogurt in their daily diet the occurrence of yeast infection can be controlled. We can also use yogurt internally to cope with the yeast infection. If a tampon is soaked in yogurt and that tampon is inserted into the vaginal wall, it will clear the yeast infection. This can be done many times a day until the symptoms disappear. If the vagina is red and inflamed because of yeast infection, then this method is preferred over the other ones.

So we can say that there is a connection between yeast infection and yogurt. It is preferred over the other methods because it is very cheap and without the side effects induced by the other methods of treatment.

4 Things That Always Come Before A 6 Pack Abs

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

David Grisaffi

Sometimes all it takes to get caught up in the hype of the latest ab machine or miracle pill is a simple photograph of a stunning set of 6-pack abs. Just about everyone wants six pack abs, or at least a trim waistline, if not a muscular one, so all the glory these days has gone to exercising the abdominal muscles. But this has caused some serious problems, and falling for the latest gimmick is not the least of them.

When you become so focused on abs and abdominal exercises, you tend to completely forget that there's much more to seeing your abs than doing crunches and other exercises for the rectus abdominis. By focusing only on the 6-pack muscles, not only do you fail to learn about the complexity and importance of the entire core region and the deeper muscles that aren't so "glamorous," you also tend to completely forget the other things that absolutely must come before 6-pack abs ever arrive.

If you fail to do these other 4 things first, it doesn't matter how much abdominal exercise you do, you will never see a six pack.

To See A set of Six Pack Abs, First, Your Body Fat Must Be Low enough

The biggest reason most people can't see their abs is because most of the population is overweight or even obese today. For your abdominals to show through, you need a low enough body fat percentage.

For men to see a clearly defined set of six pack abs, it usually requires getting down to about 10% body fat or less, and for the women, it's usually about 16% body fat or less. It's not possible to tell you exactly what body fat you will have to reach to see your abs because it also depends on your individual genetics. For example, one man can see a six pack at 11% body fat, while other men say they don't see their abs until they're 7% or 8% body fat.

Reduction of body fat is the first and most important thing that must come before a 6-pack. And that leads you to the question, "what is the best way to reduce body fat?"

The first priority in reducing body fat is nutrition, because the easiest way to create a caloric deficit is with a reduction in food intake, but few people think about the quality of the food they're eating, only the quantity. Proper hydration is also critical, but often forgotten. Exercise is the final key, but ab and core exercises alone just won't do it. It takes a certain combination of exercise for optimal results.

The Other 3 Things That Come Before A 6-Pack

1. Eat Organic I preach organic so often that to my regular readers, I probably sound like a broken record. However, it's not without reason: if you want your liver to process body fat efficiently, then you'd better have this important organ working efficiently and kept in good health. Refined foods and alcohol harm the liver and give it no chance to process body fat the way it was designed to do because it's too busy dealing with all the toxins you've consumed. So eat as organic as your budget will allow. If you can't afford organic, be sure to wash all of your food items (produce) with a natural food cleaner. Eating organic, fibrous foods will also increase improve the functioning of your digestive system and create for regular movements. You should have a bowel movement 2-3 times per day. If not, you are putting a lot of unnecessary stress on your digestive system. If this happens, then losing fat and keeping it off becomes much more difficult.

2. Drink and Be Hydrated! I urge every one of my clients and readers to drink more water. Many people understand the importance of avoiding dehydration, but they don't realize how important water is in helping remove fat from the body. Most of us are dehydrated and do not even know it. Here's a simple hydration test – pinch the skin on the back of your hand. Pull is up as high as it can go, then let it go. Does it go back to normal immediately? If not, then you're dehydrated. The rule of thumb is to drink a minimum of a half an ounce of water for every pound of body weight. So if you weigh 200 lbs, you drink at least 100 ounces (Also, if possible, avoid tap water or plastic bottled water as plastic contributes to estrogen and that encourages stubborn fat)

3. Exercise right! If you give body fat a reason to "hang around" (pun intended), then it will. Give body fat a reason to leave and it will do that just as easily. Some kind of activity every single day is just what the doctor ordered for fat loss. Rather than focusing on one type of exercise like bodybuilding or aerobics or yoga or pilates, or just strength or flexibility, I recommend a combination of cardio training, strength training and specific core conditioning exercises. While I recommend exercise such as walking very highly, I also recommend at least some vigorous and intense exercise such as interval training as well. It's this combination of strength and cardio training, plus an active lifestyle in general, that will help you reduce your body fat enough for your abs will show.

Before you jump the gun and go ballistic with "abdominal exercises," remember, that there is more to seeing your abs than just crunches. Seeing "6 pack abs" is first a function of low body fat. Achieving low body fat is in turn a function of what you eat, what you drink and how you move. That makes 4 things that come before a 6-pack. You can "ab roller" and "crunch" until the cows come home, but if you haven't done these four things first, then you're approaching it backwards and will be disappointed

David Grisaffi is a Sports Conditining Coach and holds multiple certifications including three from the prestigious CHEK Institute. Plus he is also the author of the popluar selling e book, "Firm and Flatten Your Abs," which teaches you how to develop a ripped abdominal region. Keep Exercising To Keep Osteoporosis At Bay

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Osteoporosis Can Strike at Thirty

Although osteoporosis is known to appear especially on older people, the truth is that the disease can strike at any age.

Therefore, millions and millions of people are at risk. And not only women even though osteoporosis is associated in most of the cases with them, but also men can suffer from this debilitating condition.

Women are four times more likely to develop the disease than men

Osteoporosis is a disease that makes the bones so fragile and they are more likely to break.

There are no kinds of symptoms, no pain, no warning signs that could alert people about the onset of the disease.

The first indication can be something minor like a fall, a bump or a strain causing easily a break or fracture.

Any bone can be affected, but in many cases fractures occur in the hip, spine or wrist.

Spinal fractures are serious, severe back pain, permanent loss of height and deformity are often the outcome.

Hip fractures are very dangerous. In the most of the cases, they require major surgery.

Both are likely to impair the ability to walk without assistance.

Test have proven that one in every two Caucasian women and one in eight men over the age of 50 are probable to suffer an osteoporosis related fracture at some time in their remaining lifetime.

Some women can lose almost 20% of bone mass only in the first 5-7 years after the menopause, increasing their susceptibility to the disease.

Important factors that can determine the disease are: a thin/small frame, anorexia nervosa, advanced age, post menopause including early or induced menopause, the existence of the disease in the family history, low testosterone in men, sedentary lifestyle, low calcium diet, smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol.

Prevention

Osteoporosis is a disease that needs to be prevented. No one is too young to prepare herself or himself to fight against it.

This can begin in early childhood and even teen years by building strong bones, the best foundation for prevention in later years.

The average woman will have acquired 98% of her skeletal mass by the age of twenty.

Good to start at any age, there are three fundamental steps you can take to reduce the chances of suffering from osteoporosis.

· A healthy diet rich especially in calcium and vitamin D.
· A good lifestyle with without alcohol and smoking.
· A regular routine of weight bearing exercises.

Older people or any other ones who feel they might be at risk, are advised to seek medical advice on the size of weights and intensity of the routines, because there is the danger of overdoing it which may result in fracture if the disease already exists inside their body.

The critical years for building bone mass in women are from childhood to age thirty.

According to some medical experts, a balanced diet and regular exercise can determine the increase of the bone mass by as much as 20% in women by age thirty.

Bone density measurements can be taken in various parts of the body without any pain, discomfort or invasive procedure.

The tests that help people to prevent and treat osteoporosis

· can show your rate of bone density loss and monitor the effects on a regular basis.
· are able to detect the disease before suffering a related fracture so precautionary steps can be taken.
· can predict your future chances of suffering a fracture due to the disease.

It is a wise precaution to consult your medical advisor and request bone density tests if you think there is a chance that you are at risk.

Regular exercise, a healthy diet and lifestyle will help prevent and fight virtually every disease.

All these are necessary because what you must know is that with osteoporosis there are NO warning signs, no symptoms meant to put you on your guard. This is the reason for which osteoporosis is often referred to as "the silent disease".

Osteoporosis Can Strike at Thirty Although osteoporosis is known to appear especially on older people, the truth is that the disease can strike at any age. Therefore, millions and millions of people are at risk. And not only women even though osteoporosis is associated in most of the cases with them, but also men can suffer from this debilitating condition.

Causes / Risk Factors for Kidney Disease

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Brian Lipps, M.D.

Do You Have a Risk Factor for Kidney Disease?

Most people with chronic kidney disease and early kidney failure do not have symptoms and thus do not know they have it. If you have any of the following causes of or risk factors for kidney disease, you should talk to your doctor about undergoing kidney disease screening and how to best protect your kidneys.

  • History of Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes is the number one cause of or risk factor for chronic kidney disease. It is responsible for 30-40% of new cases of kidney failure requiring dialysis, usually occurring a decade or more after diagnosis. Developing kidney failure from diabetes is not inevitable. Tight control of ones blood sugar and blood pressure can help slow down, if not prevent kidney failure. Screening and early diagnosis is key.

    Diabetic Nephropathy

  • History of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is the second most common cause of or risk factor for kidney disease.Along with diabetes, it is responsible for over two-thirds of kidney failure requiring dialysis. Because it is both a cause and an effect of kidney failure, it can sometimes be difficult to know which came first.

Regardless of the cause, once kidney disease is established, uncontrolled high blood pressure leads to blood vessel damage and the acceleration of kidney failure. As a result, tight control of blood pressure is one of the most important things that can be done to prevent or slow down the progression of kidney disease.

  • Family History of Kidney Disease

If you have one or more family members with kidney disease or on dialysis, particularly if it is a parent or sibling, you are at higher risk for kidney disease. This is particularly true if diabetes, high blood pressure or other illnesses known to affect the kidneys runs in your family. Certain kidney diseases caused by genetic defects, such as polycystic kidney disease, are strongly hereditary. So, if kidney disease runs in your family, you need to let your doctor know so you can be screened and better monitored.

    Polystic kidney disease

  • Being of a Certain Race

Having a certain ancestry can increase your risk for kidney disease, even kidney disease doesn’t run in your family. The highest risk is for African Americans but you are still at higher risk if you Hispanic, American Indian, or a Pacific Islander. By itself, your ethnicity isn’t usually enough of a reason to be screened for kidney disease, but it should raise your level of awareness.

  • Being Older

The risk of getting kidney disease increases with age. In fact, the elderly is one of the fastest demographic groups starting dialysis. The main reason that older people are at higher risk for kidney disease is because they tend to be sicker than younger people. They are more likely to have an illness that is associated with kidney disease or receive an insult to their kidneys, such as from an acute illness or a medication.

Another factor is that starting around age 35, the kidneys start to gradually lose some of its function. By the time most people reach age 80, they have lost about 30% of their kidney mass. By itself, aging of the kidney will not lead to severe kidney failure, but it means that you have less reserve if you do develop a kidney problem. So, if you are older, you should take to your doctor about measuring your kidney function and how you can protect your kidneys, even if you don’t actually have a kidney disease.

Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer among men, with the exception of skin cancer. Prostate cancers generally found among men that are over the age of 65. This cancers generally not lethal, as it can be found in early stages with proper screening in most cases. While it is not lethal, it may still have side effects such as causing sexual disorders.

There are a couple of different methods to diagnose prostate cancer. Perhaps the most well known and most feared method for men, involves a digital rectal exam. Another method is called a prostate-specific antigen test. This test searches for the specific antigen in a person's blood, which can indicate prostate cancer. This test, however, is somewhat controversial as it does not necessarily indicate cancer all the time.

This type of test is particularly argued, because of the fact that may lead to treatment for prostate cancer when prostate cancer in fact does not exist within the patient. Treatment for prostate cancer can lead to sexual disorders as well as a loss of bladder control.

Flaxseeds may be helpful in preventing a sexual disorder of this nature by helping to prevent the cancer itself. While the effectiveness of flaxseeds is still controversial, and as of yet not proven to the scientific community's satisfaction, the suggestion that it may have beneficial effects in preventing cancer is enough to cause many individuals to incorporate it into their diet.

An individual that is considering incorporating flaxseeds into their diet should speak with their doctor beforehand, particularly if they intend to take flaxseeds supplements in the form of a pill or powder. This is due to the fact that although it may be natural, it can still have side effects.

What You Put On Your Skin Goes Into Your Body

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By Wendy Cohen

Do you know mineral oil (baby oil) is banned in European cosmetic products due to the toxicity it produces in the body? Yet it is the number one ingredient used as filler in most American cosmetics and creams!

Do you know the U.S. has the highest rate of cancer in the world? Recent studies have shown cosmetic chemicals found en masse in breast tissue? Jeremy Likness reports researchers looked at twenty human breast tumors and found synthetic chemicals in eighteen of them.

Do you know the number one cause of skin damage in the US is from sun exposure? Johns Hopkins studies show the number two cause of skin damage is mineral oil. A quick look in our cosmetic bags just might reveal products which include a form of mineral oil, a highly refined by product of crude oil. If your skin is the largest organ on your body then it can certainly be a major factor in what gets into your body. That is the opinion of Wendy Cohen, mother of two school-aged children; recipient of several Senatorial and Congressional awards for her work in banning chemicals in classrooms around the country; and Arbonne Consultant.

In 1997 Wendy co-founded a grass roots organization which banned chemicals in school rooms. Or as Ms. Cohen likes to say, “A policy which uses least toxic methods to control pests, clean facilities, and sanitize the surroundings.” Children should not be exposed to chemicals while their bodies are still developing and as adults we must be tenacious and careful not to absorb unwanted products through our skin. After forming a national alliance Ms. Cohen’s logical next step was finding products which her family and friends would find safe for their skin.

The journey lead her to Arbonne International. How do you know which products are right for your particular needs? Children’s skin is many times more sensitive to certain products than adult skin. There are many studies which have been done showing what is put on the skin and absorbed into the body affects our emotional states, chemical balance, and reproductive systems among other things. Rates of absorption are different for every area of the body but as long as something is on your skin, it is being absorbed into your body. agf.gov.bc.ca/pesticides/b_2.htm

American’s have seen a surge in dermal patches for smoking, birth control, pain management, and even weight control. Studies find the skin is a rapid and efficient delivery system to the body. Ms. Cohen makes sure to point out what goes on the skin shows up in the body.

So how did Ms. Cohen, end up as a consultant with Arbonne International? She segued from a position in marketing and licensing at one of Hollywood’s largest film studios to becoming a stay-at-home mother. “At the time of my first child’s birth my husband was traveling abroad and away from home 21 days a month. I couldn’t see my child having two absentee parents and I didn’t want to miss spending every moment with my child.” She missed the sense of accomplishment so spent her time in volunteer efforts. After Ms. Cohen co-founded a coalition aimed at removing chemicals from schools it just seemed logical to evaluate her home environment and what was being put on her family’s skin.

“I couldn’t believe the chemicals in U.S. products.” says Cohen. “Studies are aimed at adult consumers not children so we don’t know the deleterious affects of chemicals on children but it doesn’t take a chemical degree to figure it out.”

Ms. Cohen began relying more on environmentally friendly products, organic food sources, and organic skin care. “I found a US made product which had the least amount of chemicals available. This was a few years ago before the trend toward true organics arose. The one product I used cost several hundred dollars a month and I have two daughters who would eventually be teenagers! I knew I had to find something even more pure and safe with a more reasonable cost basis.”

She solicited the input of her dermatologist. That became a turning point in her life. “One of those encounters which change the trajectory of one’s life” she says. While sitting in the exam room her dermatologist noticed a mole on her then 8 year old child’s skin. “We are going to cancel your appointment for today and see your daughter. When your dermatologist does that you take notice. Immediately.” says Cohen. As it turned out her family dermatologist and pediatrician strongly urged Wendy to find a botanical product for the sensitive skin of her children. “And, they told me, you’ll not find a pure enough product in the US; you’ll have to look at European skin care. We’re not even sure what’s available.”

At that time Wendy found Arbonne and began using the full line of products and recommending it to family, friends and anyone who would listen.

“The good news is I know Arbonne is pure, safe, and beneficial and we’re taking care of our skin and our bodies all at once.”

My name is Wendy Cohen and I've been with Arbonne since 2005. Having had a career in the airline industry for many years then in the entertainment industry, I saw more and more corporate bankruptcies, furloughs by the thousands, and pensions evaporate, I knew I wanted more. In my quest for something different, I turned my energy to establishing a 501(c)3 organization and spoke to groups all over the country. I noticed the thin line most people walk when it comes to creating wealth or securing a financially solvent future and preparing for retirement. I wanted to earn a substantial income and I wanted the leisure time to spend it.

I am convinced that in order to secure a future for me and my family I need to have my own business. I saw then and I see even more clearly today that in Arbonne I found the key to financial security and financial freedom.

The world looks differently to me today than it did a couple years ago. I simply don't worry about finances for the future. I know with Arbonne I am creating residual income and a business which I can will to my family.

With all the above in formation what should we do to improve our health? Sugar is every where but we need to read all labels and try our best to eat as little sugar as possible. Do not turn to chemical sweeteners as they are toxic and in the case of aspartame it will cause you to gain weight.

Sugar in Any Form is Unhealthy

Several years ago, I learned that grain and sugar carbohydrates (actually foods that are white) are unhealthy and we can become obese from these products (we also have to add corn into this because it is a grain – not a vegetable).

There several reasons grains are unhealthy. The first and the worst are processed foods. Industrial food manufacturers strip all the nutrition from grains, fortify with chemical vitamins (that our bodies can’t use), and then bake or extrude into a “food”. They also add sugar, corn syrup, and other chemicals.

Extruding maybe the worst because the high pressure and high heat destroys everything – including the artificial vitamins and the minerals (This is called fortification). This is the reason children should never have cold cereal – there is ZERO nutrition in cereal + lots of sugar is added to entice our children into eating this junk food.

Breads are bad for the same reasons – sugars, fortified vitamins, and non absorbable minerals are put into the mix. White bread being bad is not new news, but the population is mislead because they think whole wheat bread is ok. We must read labels. Whole wheat bread is nothing more than a few chemicals to influence the color and taste.

If you choose to eat organic whole wheat non chemical breads you still must consider several things. Whole wheat organic with molasses (this is less sugar – not as concentrated – plus real trace minerals) is much healthier but these grains still break down to sugars.

We do not have the space to discuss the organophosphates – herbicides and pesticides – in this article but please remember that unless what you eat is organic it will have these toxic chemicals.

As you read the rest of this article remember that Dr Otto Warburg’s work discovered that cancer loves sugar and there is more than a casual relationship between the two entities. Also look at Dr Appleton’s 146 reasons why sugar is unhealthy.

Also be advised that drug corporations, medicine, and our government do not want you to know what we are discussing. There will never be a cure for cancer and heart disease – in fact there isn’t a cure for anything – just treatment until you die. Our economy is based on no one ever getting well or off medications.

If there was a magical cure for cancer and heart disease announced today, our economy would tank in a matter of days.

Social Security is in trouble but if everyone lived and extra 5 to 10 years or more, SS would be in even worse shape than it’s present prospects with the baby boomers retirements approaching.

We can be healthier, and less obese. Read my e-book on eating healthy, lose weight, and remember SUGAR IS BAD for you and me.

Every doctor learned back in medical school all about Otto Warburg's discovery; because way back in the thirties Otto discovered the main biochemical cause of cancer, or what differentiates a cancer cell from a normal, healthy cell. This discovery was so big that Otto Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize.

Cancer has only one prime cause. It is the replacement of normal oxygen respiration of the body's cells by an anaerobic [i.e., oxygen-deficient] cell respiration. -Dr. Otto Warburg

Magnetic Therapy: Effect on your DNA

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

gordy weiss

The utilization of the magnet in the field of medication is not new but is continuing for hundreds years. There has been a massive change in the pattern of approach. With the emergence of new technology, magnets are being utilized in a more advanced way to normalize the body functions. The Smart Magnet is the product of the new invention, which has certain magnetic frequencies programmed into its magnetic pattern to max out the effect on a specific area of the body.

Magnetic therapy with the help of smart magnet activates the DNA when these magnets are held close to the skin. The explanation of its working has been cleared in the biophysics. It is vital that the DNA in your cells should receive a good magnetic energy so that it is able to instruct your genes on how to continually maintain the 5 ‘R’ level. You must wonder reading this article

what these 5 ‘R’ stands for? The 5 ‘R’ are
1. Replenish
2. Rebuild
3. Replace
4. Rejuvenate

We know that there are to sources of energy; the food we eat which is the direct source of energy and the sunlight, which is considered as the indirect source of energy. Apart from these two types of energy there is one more source that provides us with energy and this is magnetic energy that is vital for our survival. The different sources of magnetic energy are the earth's magnetic field, the good or natural foods you eat, the sun, from man made devices, supplements in ionic form and other people that radiate a positive attitude.

The alteration of good DNA energy existing in your body due to the interference of suppressors like electrical devices and appliance for example; Televisions, Cell phones, Microwaves, High electrical tension wires, Computers screens, etc can lead to premature aging, sickness, or terminal illnesses. Even when the food is overcooked the magnetic energy of these food is completely diminished.

Your DNA needs to be fully charged with magnetic energy so as to provide your genes the right information to build healthy cells and this energy can be obtained by eating a variety of raw food with its own frequency and it is these magnetic frequencies that activate and promote your DNA to perform its natural function of directing the genes to produce a healthy body. Failure for your body to rebuild itself will results in a distressed immune system and premature aging. Smart Magnets give you the added magnetic energy to your own internal power. Once charged stop using it but continue eating good charged food to protect yourself from destructive magnetic energies.

Marine Phytoplankton impacts Inflammation while complementing Essential Fatty Acids

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: rolfie

Anti-inflammatory medications are, without a doubt, one of the biggest selling medication classifications in the Western world. According to the June 17, 1999 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, doctors wrote more than 70 million prescriptions for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs or “NSAIDs.” On top of that, more than 30 billion over-the-counter NSAID tablets (aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, etc.) were sold in the United States in that year. But while these medications offer temporary relief for our everyday aches and pains, what exactly is their function? Are they healing or are they masking beneficial symptoms? Are their better alternatives? The answers to these questions may surprise you.

Inflammation can be a normal process designed to heal the body. Inflammation begins with the release of a fatty acid called arachidonic acid. Triggers for arachidonic acid release include chemical or environmental toxin exposure, bacterial or viral infection, or injury and trauma. Once released, arachidonic acid is converted to compounds called prostaglandins, specifically one called PGE2 which brings about the signs and symptoms of inflammation: redness, heat, swelling, and pain. Each of these symptoms, while uncomfortable, is a sign that the body is repairing itself and protecting itself from further injury.

NSAIDs and other anti-inflammatory medications stop the conversion of arachadonic acid to prostaglandins at various locations in the pathway. They can also have side effects on the body which include ulcers, intestinal bleeding, liver damage, kidney failure, headache, and more. Remember that the symptoms of inflammation indicate an attempt of the body to heal by increasing its metabolic processes. By suppressing the symptoms of inflammation, healing never actually occurs, the body can remain inflamed, and the cycle will begin again.

So how can we support the inflammation process, but reduce the symptoms that are so uncomfortable? One answer lies with essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids or EFAs are fats that come directly from our diet or from supplementation. They are called essential because our body cannot make them on its own and we must provide them through the diet. The most beneficial EFAs are the Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. The Omega 3 fatty acids are extremely powerful. In the body’s constant search for balance, it directly synthesizes an anti-inflammatory prostaglandin called PGE3 from Omega-3 fatty acids. Adequate amounts of PGE3 inhibit the inflammatory process and ensure that inflammation does not overwhelm the individual. In other words, omega-3 fatty acids decrease inflammation and bring balance to the body. This balance brings allows the body to heal and lessens uncomfortable inflammatory symptoms.

The best source of omega-3 fatty acids is cold-water fish like salmon, trout, halibut, sardines, and cod. These fish are rich in the omega-3 fatty acids. Another very beneficial source of EFAs is marine phytoplankton. Marine phytoplankton are microscopic single-celled plants which provide high levels of vitamins, minerals, and EFAs. They are the beginning of the food chain, the food for whales, and a great source of foundational nutrition. Marine phytoplankton is finally available for human supplementation and appears very promising at supporting optimal health. As with any nutritional supplement, finding a good product is very important. Knowing your source will ensure that you have a properly prepared and formulated product that will work effectively. Sources we have found to be reputable and beneficial can be found here.

Balancing the inflammatory response with omega-3 fatty acids is not typically done as a quick fix for an acute inflammatory response. For example, fish oils will not provide immediate relief for sports injuries, headaches, etc. Ice, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, and herbs are more effective in those situations. Instead, omega-3 fatty acids are most beneficial in supporting chronic inflammatory conditions like heart disease, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, eczema, colitis, and autoimmune conditions

Essential fatty acids play a key role in balancing the inflammatory response in the body. They do not suppress healing, but instead support the body’s own anti-inflammatory response. Doing this ensures that healing occurs effectively and efficiently. So the next time you reach for that bottle of aspirin for your chronic pain, remember the marine phytoplankton and the friendly fish and their oils. They may be what you need to live pain and inflammation free.

Essential Healthy Eating Plan for Vegeterians

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By Rich Sale

The healthy eating plan is essentially the same for all of us however, if you are a vegetarian then it is even more important to check you are getting all the nutrients you need from your diet. Unfortunately meat does contain some of the vital nutrients that we need to remain healthy. So if you don't eat meat you have to find alternative sources for these important nutrients.

As a guide we should all (irrespective of our dietary rules) be trying to achieve the following:-

  • Eat at least five portions of different fruit and vegetables every day
  • Include starchy foods such as wholegrain pasta, brown rice, cereals and pulses, lentils and peas so that they contribute about a third of your diet.
  • Eat a variety of protein foods such as dairy products, pulses or eggs through the week
  • Reduce the amount of frying and roasting in oil. Where possible grill, bake, boil, steam or poach your food.
  • Read product labels to see how much fat, fibre, sugar and salt is contained per portion or as a percentage
  • Choose products that are low in sugar and fat
  • Keep salt intake to a low level, check food labels and choose low salt varieties. Try not to use salt during cooking.
  • The average person should aim to drink 6-8 glasses (1.2 litres) of liquid each day and more if you take exercise.

The above is good sound advice for all but if you are on a meat free diet then you have to ensure you are getting the nutrients you need especially iron, protein and selenium. This is because these nutrients are typically obtained from the meat in a diet.

How to get enough iron.
The chemical element Iron (Fe) is an essential dietary nutrient however it's consumption has to be regulated because larger amounts are toxic. The body actually regulates the uptake of iron however excessive intake can stop this process from working resulting in damage to the gastrointestinal tract. As a guide the Upper Limit for intake of iron is 45 mg/day in adults and 40 mg/day in children under 14. Please note that this is not the recommended daily intake which is about 14 mg/day in adults.

Pulses, green vegetables like broccoli, spring greens, watercress and okra are great sources of iron. But you should be aware that your body will find it easier to absorb iron from the food you eat if you combine it with vitamin C. So take a glass of fruit juice with your meal.

It is also useful to know that drinking tea or coffee with your meal reduces the absorption of iron. So you should wait a while after eating before having a cuppa.

How to get enough protein.

The following foods are great sources of protein but it is important to have a mixture of these each day and vary the types you have during the week.

  • pulses ( lentils and beans)
  • nuts and seeds
  • milk and dairy products
  • eggs
  • soya or soya products like tofu
  • mycoprotein, which is sold as Quorn™
  • wheat proteins, such as cereals,

    bread, rice and maize

What is Selenium and How do we get it?

Selanium is a chemical element (Se) and it is an essential micronutrient for all animals and some plants. In large amounts Selenium is toxic. In humans, Selenium is a trace element nutrient which is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system.

Selenium is found in nuts, cereals, meat, fish and eggs. Brazil nuts are the richest source of Selenium so try eating a few each day as part of a snack.

Healthy eating is important and relatively easy to do. However, vegetarians must adopt a healthy eating plan that provides all the required nutrients.

Discover how you can start a healthy eating plan and put that spring back in your step.

Dangers of Aspartame

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

By Sandra Kim Leong

There are several health dangers of aspartame. Yet, many people are unaware of them. The diet industry prefers to keep this a secret as keeping products containing aspartame on the shelves ensure their profits. Many conventional doctors and medical practitioners also deny the ill effects about aspartame.

Some people are lucky to have an immediate reaction to the products containing the chemical. Their immediate reactions can range from having a bad migraine, to feeling faint, nervousness and stomach cramps. With reactions that are instant, it is easy to recognize that aspartame should best be eliminated from their diet. Most of us are not lucky enough to have these reactions but there are many dangers of aspartame that you should be aware of.

The most common symptom associated with aspartame poisoning is headache. Many people say that they experience problems with vision, including blurred vision, blindness, and other eye problems. There have been cited reports of emotional and mental health issues as well. Some people reported memory loss, depression, mood issues, vertigo, and anxiety. Nausea and other stomach disorders are prevalent in aspartame poisoning. Other severe physical symptoms are also associated with aspartame poisoning. These include muscle cramping and joint pain, loss of energy, and heart attack-like symptoms.

What is ironical is that recent studies have shown that aspartame may increase the risk of obesity. Researchers have found that sweet tastes trigger body chemistry that causes cells to store carbohydrates and fats. You then begin to crave for more food. Hence, aspartame and other artificial sweeteners stimulate the urge to eat, thereby countering the very reason a person generally consumes an artificial sweetener. Some studies even indicate that those who consume diet soda are more likely to gain weight than people who avoid them.

It is easy to substitute aspartame containing products with healthier ones. Healthier consumables are also no less delicious. For instance, a tall glass of iced green tea can be just as refreshing as diet soda. Consuming refined flour cookies with an artificial sweetener may disappear into your tummy very quickly but can still leave you unsatisfied. Compare this to eating a thick, chewy oatmeal cookie made with dried fruits and nuts which will keep you full.

If you have been a consumer of aspartame, then it is time to reverse some of your old thinking. The dangers of aspartame should not be ignored and the habit of consuming products with aspartame should be stopped. Obesity is at alarming levels, with both children and adults alike. Eating products containing aspartame can contribute to weight problems. It is also shocking to note that the incidence of type two diabetes in young people is growing at a rapid rate.

While there may be an official stance that aspartame does not pose any dangers to your body, you should take charge of your own health. After all, if there are healthier alternatives to artificial sweeteners around, why take aspartame?

Iron and anemia

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by Mitamins Team

Anemia is closely related to iron. But what kinds of iron can we ingest naturally and what kind of iron can we take as supplements. By examining the causes, symptoms and treatments of anemia, we can get a better idea of the big link between iron and anemia.

Anemia symptoms

Some common symptoms of anemia include fatigue, lethargy, weakness, poor concentration, and frequent colds. A peculiar symptom of iron-deficiency anemia, called pica, is the desire to eat unusual things, such as ice, clay, cardboard, paint, or starch. Advanced anemia may also result in lightheadedness, headaches, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), irritability, pale skin, restless leg syndrome which causes unpleasant sensations in the legs with an uncontrollable urge to move them, and getting out of breath easily.

Where is your iron kept?

The majority of your body's iron is found in hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen for delivery to your cells. Hemoglobin is a highly complex molecule that has one atom of iron at its center. That one atom is what gives blood its red coloring.

A common metal, an invaluable health resource

After your bone marrow makes red blood cells they circulate in the blood for about 120 days, at which time they grow old and are destroyed. Thus, each day, nearly 1 percent of our red blood cells are destroyed and 25 mg of iron is released from their hemoglobin. However, the majority of this iron is conserved and reused. This is a bit odd since our environment provides abundant iron, leading some experts to theorize that at an earlier evolutionary epoch, iron may have been scarce.

Iron is lost by bleeding

Unlike other essential minerals, iron is not excreted in the urine, which serves to conserve it even further. However, iron is lost from the body by bleeding (including menstrual flow), from the gastrointestinal tract, in bile which is eliminated in feces, and in the shedding of mucosal and skin cells, and in hair. In males and non-menstruating females, the daily loss of iron is approximately 1.0 mg. Iron loss in menstruating females runs from 1.4 to 3.2 mg per day, depending on the blood volume of the menstrual flow. To remain healthy, the daily loss of iron, however slight it may seem, must be made up by a sufficient daily dietary intake otherwise you may suffer anemia symptoms.

Anemia symptoms

People who are iron deficient (anemic) are often pale, irritable, and tire easily. Other anemia symptoms can include increased blood pressure, dizziness, foggy thinking, muscle weakness, heart palpitations, impaired immune function, restless legs, itchy skin, hair loss and ringing in the ears.

Anemia treatments

Many women are advised to take an iron supplement at some point during their lives, either during pregnancy or due to heavy bleeding during menopause, which can cause iron-deficiency anemia. NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen) can cause chronic gastrointestinal bleeding that can also result in enough blood loss to cause anemia. Women with anemia tend to bleed more readily, which only exacerbates the problem.

Taking iron supplements as an anemia treatment

Taking an iron supplement as an anemia treatment supplies the bone marrow with the material it needs to make hemoglobin, a part of red blood cells. However, iron deficiency may be caused not only by blood loss, but also by poor iron absorption. There are two factors that need to be recognized in regard to iron absorption. One is the benefit of heme iron, such as found in meat. Heme iron stimulates iron absorption. It only takes a small amount of meat in the diet (such as in Asian diets) to stimulate good iron absorption. Those folks who totally abstain from meat are denied that benefit.

How to help your body absorb iron as an anemia treatment

The second factor in iron absorption is vitamin C. The addition of a small amount of vitamin C with meals increases iron absorption from food six-fold and will help control anemia problems. The total daily amount of vitamin C needs to be only about 500 mg per day to create this benefit. Milk, on the other hand, inhibits iron absorption, which is one more reason among many to stay away from it.

Causes of Fecal Incontinence

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

Robert Hill

What is fecal or bowel incontinence?

Fecal or bowel incontinence is the loss of normal control over bowel movements, causing stool to be unexpectedly released from the rectum. This problem affects as many as five million people in the United States. Bowel incontinence is more common in women than men and can range from a small leakage of stool while passing gas to complete loss of bowel control.

Causes of fecal or bowel incontinence

There are many causes of fecal incontinence. The condition occurs when something is wrong within the complex mechanisms of the body that maintain continence. Continence depends on functioning muscles and nerves in and around the rectum and anal canal.

Common causes of fecal incontinence include diarrhea, pelvic floor dysfunction, muscle and nerve damage, loss of storage capacity and constipation.

Diarrhea, or loose stool , may be associated with a feeling of urgency or stool leakage due to the frequent liquid stools passing through the anal opening. Diarrhea is more difficult to control than solid stool and even people who do not suffer from fecal incontinence can have an accident when they have diarrhea.

Pelvic floor dysfunction - the pelvic floor plays an important role in maintaining continence and abnormalities of the pelvic floor can lead to bowel incontinence. Such dysfunction are: decreased perception of rectal sensation, decreased anal canal pressures, decreased squeeze pressure of the anal canal, impaired anal sensation, a dropping down of the rectum (rectal prolapse) and protrusion of the rectum through the vagina (rectocele). The cause of pelvic floor dysfunction is often caused by childbirth.

Muscle damage - bowel incontinence is most often caused by injury to one or both of the ring-like muscles at the end of the rectum called the anal sphincters. The sphincters keep stool inside. When damaged, the muscles are not strong enough to do their job, and stool can leak out. In women, the damage often happens when giving birth. Anal operations or injury to the tissue surrounding the anal region can damage the anal muscles and hinder bowel control.

Nerve damage - fecal incontinence can be caused by damage to the nerves that control the anal sphincters or to the nerves that sense stool in the rectum. If the nerves that control the sphincters are injured, the muscle does not work properly and incontinence can occur. Nerve damage can be caused by childbirth, a long-term habit of straining to pass stool, stroke, and diseases that affect the nerves, such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Loss of storage capacity - normally, the rectum stretches to hold stool until you can get to a bathroom. But rectal surgery, radiation treatment, and inflammatory bowel disease can cause scarring that makes the walls of the rectum stiff and less elastic. The rectum then cannot stretch as much to hold stool, resulting in incontinence.

Constipation is one of the most common causes of fecal incontinence and can lead to a large amount of stool in the rectum, a condition called fecal impaction. A fecal impaction is a large mass of dry, hard stool that interferes with normal ability to control bowel movements. A watery stool from higher in the bowel may eventually move around the impaction and leak out.

There are many causes of bowel or fecal incontinence. The condition occurs when something is wrong within the complex mechanisms of the body that maintain continence. Common causes of fecal incontinence include diarrhea, pelvic floor dysfunction, muscle and nerve damage, loss of storage capacity and constipation.

Lyme Disease, Rife And Quantum Biofeedback

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by: Thomas Rodriguez

There are many forms of treatment now available for anyone suffering from Lyme Disease, in particular chronic or late stage Lyme Disease. Once you can get a diagnosis, traditional medicine does have viable therapies, mostly anti-biotics that can be effective in treating Lyme Disease and many co-infections related to Lyme such as Babesia and Erhlicia. Alternative medicine offers everything from herbs, hydrogen peroxide IV therapy, high dose Vitamin C IV therapy, sauna, ozone, and a host of others. All of these work in varying degree depending on the person and the level of infection. Lyme is extremely complex in it’s form and in treatment options.

Energy Medicine, the new kid on the block, has been a viable option for quite some time. However, awareness of this modality has been obscured for a variety of political reasons similar to Lyme Disease itself. The importance of it’s efficacy in treating Lyme related pathogens is proven. It has many names, Rife being the most well known. There are a variety of Rife like devices that are now available on the market and can be used by individuals with Lyme Disease. The risk is minimal, but learning to use it properly is key in minimizing any “Herx” or “Die Off” effect of the pathogens. The EPFX/SCIO Quantum Biofeedback device also contains a Rife like generator. The cost of a basic Rife like device is considerably less, generally around $1800 to $2000 and the EPFX/SCIO is $18,500 and requires a great deal of training to use it. However, utilizing the Rife for some may prove too difficult to manage if they are seriously ill. And having sessions with a qualified Quantum Biofeedback Specialist using the EPFX/SCIO may work for some Lyme sufferers better, at least initially.

The EPFX/SCIO also helps balance the overall body systems utilizing frequency therapy. It can also help with symptom reduction and reduce the “Die Off” or “Herx” effect after using the Rife modality. It may prove useful as well, for those using a Rife device on their own to have occasional sessions to assist in maintaining awareness of their condition and level of infection. The EPFX/SCIO device provides monitoring and analysis from an energetic perspective of a person’s overall health including the body’s response level to pathogens and immune strength. This monitoring does not take the place of proper medical treatment, blood testing, etc., but it is an additional tool to help individual empowerment and overall stress reduction relating to the varied symptoms of Lyme Disease.

The EPFX/SCIO is a comprehensive three dimensional unit in it’s approach to Lyme and can even monitor the energetic resonance of the specific Lyme pathogens for the individual. The Rife like devices do not offer this monitoring ability but both of these brilliant energetic devices offer a viable tool in the arsenal of medical weapons needed to fight the voracious Lyme pathogens. Most Lyme sufferers will need a multi-modality approach to overcome this complex illness. Energetic frequency therapy like the Rife device and others similar to it have afforded many Lyme sufferers the ability to wean off antibiotics and provide a viable solution to long term maintenance and in some cases complete recovery from Lyme related infections. The EPFX/SCIO device offers the same, but with a more comprehensive approach. Cost being a factor, Rife like devices are more affordable for the average person, but finding a competent Quantum Biofeedback Specialist could be, for some, the difference in quality of life and a shorter duration of the disease.

Either way, energetic medicine is a significant piece of the puzzle for Lyme patients. Information on Biofeedback Specialists can be found at http://biofeedbackdirectory.com. The national board that certifies Biofeedback Specialists both in traditional and Quantum Biofeedback offers this website to locate practitioners in your area. Information on Rife like devices can be found at www.lymebook.com. This site offers information, books and materials on the subject and is an excellent source of education on the Rife type devices as well as other Lyme related topics.

Low Turnover Rates Make a Medical Practice Perfect

ป้ายกำกับ:

by John Burke

Most health care managers spend a good portion of their day dealing with patients both directly and indirectly. If there's one thing I've noticed it's the comfort that consistency brings to their medical experience. By that I don't just mean having a doctor they can trust, but also nurses and office staff they know and can depend upon.

I was reminded of this as I read a recent Medical Group Management Association article about rewarding a good staff as a means of keeping them in your employment:

''One way leaders minimize turnover is by rewarding employees for helping the practice succeed. The clinic also gives staff members a voice in the practice's operations...Employees can have a direct effect on practice operations in several ways. Because they serve as liaisons between patients and clinic leaders, employees use a feedback box to capture comments they hear from patients. Those submissions are reviewed monthly at staff meetings so all employees and providers are aware of issues and can help provide solutions."

Of course, this requires that everyone put their egos aside for the benefit of the overall practice, and in places where there is an established hierarchy it can be difficult to share information so freely. However, giving every employee a voice and rewarding their effort increases their commitment to the work they do, and patients intuitively know when the people who care for them are truly involved.

At our office, we offer year-end bonuses and increased vacation time for ideas that save money and time. In a small work environment where advancement opportunities are limited, it is our way of keeping people in the fold. It helps make it a place that I look forward to going into every morning, and props up morale.

I'm lucky. The office I manage is able to pay a competitive wage, which is invaluable in both attracting and keeping a high quality staff. However, it's been my experience that while a satisfactory paycheck is vital, it's not the only way to keep office morale high.

One of the main things I do is recognize achievement. When someone does something noteworthy or makes a valuable suggestion, I make note of it and during the next office meeting, I take the time to mention publicly just how grateful I am to that particular person. Praise, when legitimately given, is a terrific way to make an employee strive for excellence.

I also will send out the occasional complimentary email for the whole office to read, or even something as personal as a post-it on someone's computer. I'm careful not to go overboard or say too much, but I've found that people really appreciate the fact that their deed was remembered. Granted, we're all professionals, and should routinely be doing outstanding work, but that doesn't mean we don't like getting complimented for it on occasion.

Another thing I do with everyone in the office is plan small events like a dinner out together or even something informal like a bowling party. Nothing reinforces the sense of working in unison like bonding outside of the workplace. It also helps break down the barrier between doctors and office staff, keeping everyone approachable and on good working terms.

Sometimes I jokingly refer to our office as a lifeboat. We sink or swim together. It isn't necessary that we like or care about everybody on board, but it sure does help.

Fire Up Your Fat Burning Hormones To Lose Weight Fast

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by: Colin Lim

Its not surprising that the general population is completely confused as to what they should do when it comes to trying to lose weight. One just has to turn on the television especially late at night, to be confronted with a tanned toned beautiful model telling you that if you just buy this great weight loss gadget/gizmo/machine or wonderful exercise video or so-called scientific breakthrough diet pills or new weight loss program, then in just 4 weeks or 1 week or 2 days or whatever the claim is, you’ll be as trim and taut and looking just like the model.

And there are new diet programs coming out every other day - whether its the zone diet, low carb diet, high carb diet, high protein diet, complex carb diet, vegetable only diet, or whatever - its no wonder that the average person is completely confused as to exactly what to eat and what to do in order to lose weight and stay trim.

Here are some facts that may help you if you are trying to figure out what is the best way to lose weight and thus which weight loss program to choose.

1. Low calorie diets will actually work against you because eating low calorie foods only will actually slow down your body’s fat burning engine and thus prevent you from losing weight. What happens is that your body detects that you are consuming less calories and it will adjust your metabolism as a result by burning less calories.

2. The problem with low carb diets is that, whilst in theory they may work, in reality these don’t work as if you don’t eat enough carbs, you will not have the energy to do anything and many people end up sluggish and depressed about it all and end up binge eating thus working completely against your fat burning program.

3. Weight loss programs offered by Weight Watchers & Jenny Craig do work but they normally take quite a long time as you need to progress through a monthly program that can take anywhere from 6 months or more. These programs also consist of you having to purchase special meals and dietary supplements especially at the beginning of the program. These programs can be quite expensive.

4. Whilst many of the diet programs out in the market today will actually help you prevent putting on more weight, they do little if anything, to help you burn off weight you already have. Unless you already have a trim taut body and all you want to do is stop yourself from putting on weight, then most of these diets and exercise gizmo’s won’t work.

So what does work, what is it that you need to know to understand what can help you? Well at the most basic and fundamental level, the reason why most people are overweight is because they eat wrong foods, the wrong types of calories per meal, and you’re also eating meals in the wrong patterns each day. Its actually a myth that you get fat because you are not doing the right exercise. Exercising helps you stay fit, but you don’t get fat because you are not exercising, you get fat because of the food you eat. The food you eat combined with when you eat those foods has the power to determine whether you are fat or thin.

Our bodies need to eat the right food at the right times of the day in order to fire up our fat burning hormones such as testosterone, insulin and growth hormones as well as your metabolism. Eating the right foods at the right times helps your body to burn calories versus storing them as fat. This is because everytime you eat something your brain tells your body to either release fat burning hormones or fat storage hormones. What you need to do is to get your brain to tell your body to maximise fat burning hormones and minimize fat storage hormones (you need some fat storage to be healthy).

A diet program that is designed to focus on burning fat tissue by using a food system of shifting calories is the key to fast weight loss. This system will see you burning approximately 9lbs each 11 days. Its not about calorie counting, its not about low carbs, and you can still drink alcohol, eat at restaurants, eat late at night and eat more than three meals a day and still burn fat.

The reason this program works is that its based on scientifically proven facts and about getting your body to do what it can do naturally. Is not about special dietary supplements or starving the body out of its required resources. This program works for everybody no matter what your genetic makeup.

Treating Kidney Stones at Home

ป้ายกำกับ:

Frank Madras

As the world of medicine slowly starts to make a stronger link between diet and assorted sicknesses, the common condition of kidney stones is no exception. Your diet directly influences their formation, but it can also be the best treatment for the condition.

You are more likely to develop the condition if you have a bad diet, but can kidney stones be treated with a good diet? The answer is yes, they can be. Generally, excess consumption of protein, fats and sugars can increase your chance of developing kidney stones. So logically decreasing these elements in your diet should give your body a chance to cleanse the stones from your system.

First, ensure you’re drinking enough water (Purified is the best). If you’re already aware of the formation of kidney stones, water will give your bladder the required liquids to flush and break down the stones. Water is also essential for preventing kidney stones from forming in the first place, by diluting your urine and decreasing the chance of solid particles forming.

Secondly, consumption of raw fruit and vegetables is also vital as they give your body a water-soluble fibre. Eating a baked apple cake with ice cream is NOT what I’m talking about here, once the fruit is baked its chemical composition changes for the worse, and all the beneficial fibres and vitamins are destroyed.

In terms of food items to avoid, products with high levels of salt and sugar are to be avoided as much as possible. Red meats should also be cut down as the proteins in the meat have been associated with kidney stone formation. Carbonated drinks such as lemonade should also be avoided as they contain large amounts of phosphorus (which is in all sodas).

These pointers will give you a head start, but if you want to find out more about treating kidney stones at home solely with diet, you can find a complete e-book about the topic here!

Frank Madras is a medicine student at the University of Adelaide, and recently helped his father in treating kidney stones at home (consequently the interest in the subject). Find out more about treating kidney stones with diet and natural medicines.

The role of kidneys explained: create and guard the natural balance

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Martin Kisjes

The kidneys are one of the body's primary execratory mechanisms. Although less multi-functional than the liver, the human body can't live without these organs as they filter our blood constantly and remove all toxins from the body. Kidney detox is not a bad idea as, obviously, too much toxins will create the kidneys to be overworked. Less toxins can be eliminated, more toxins stay within your system, creating an unhealthy internal environment. A kidney detox diet will contribute to a decrease of toxic substances, which will contribute to an increase of the kidneys performance and thus an increase of the body performance.

Besides filtering the blood and remove toxins that have been made water-soluble by complex detox processes that take place in the liver another task of the kidneys is helping to balance the body's internal environment. This balance is created by removing excess water, gases, salts and other organic materials, while conserving the substances the body requires for its normal functioning.

Each day, about 1,700 quarts of blood flows through the kidneys. Of that volume, only about 180 quarts is filtered, and of this fluid, 178 quarts is reabsorbed; the remaining amount, only one to two quarts, passes off as urine. In all, the kidneys filter an amount equal to the entire volume of blood about 30 to 36 times per day.

The ureter carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder where it is stored until it is voluntarily expelled at intervals.

If you can reduce the quantity of toxins by adapt your consumption pattern, the kidneys can eliminate a higher percentage of toxins from the blood. Besides that they will have more energy to create and guard the natural balance, resulting in a fit and energetic body.

Frequently asked questions are: "How do I detox my liver, my kidneys and my body". Find the answers by reading more articles on the website.

Is Reiki Healing Legitimate?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Patsy Hamilton

Is Reiki healing legitimate? The short answer is “yes”, if the practitioner has been trained in the art. Just as with any other type of therapy, the “therapist” can make all the difference. Here’s a little general information about Reiki and those who practice it.

Reiki is considered a form of “complementary” medicine. People who are seriously ill and have other treatment options should not choose Reiki instead of conventional treatment, but as a complementary or adjunctive therapy, it can be very helpful in many conditions.

Skeptics generally say that people who practice Reiki and other forms of non-conventional medicine are playing on the desperation of those who are seriously ill. But, no reputable therapist would advise patients to stop other forms of treatment, to stop seeing their doctors or to keep “secrets” from their doctors about what complementary treatments they are using. Whether it be Reiki, herbal remedies or any thing else, in order to receive the most effective treatment, patients need to be able to openly discuss all of their options with their doctors.

It is no surprise that people wonder is Reiki healing legitimate. At one time, the fundamentals of this type of medicine were kept secret. High fees were charged for training and for healing. The secrecy and fee structure alone were enough to draw criticism.

Reiki healers are sometimes compared to faith healers and most of us have heard the stories about faith healers like Peter Popoff, whose so-called miracles were proven to be fraudulent. But, Reiki is a legitimate form of energy medicine or “healing touch therapy”. It is not practiced by ministers or preachers, but by licensed massage therapists, nurses and anyone who is interested in learning to tap into the “universal life force”.

Reiki is actually more closely related to Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine than to faith healing. Ayurvedic medicine is widely practiced throughout India and is recognized as a legitimate form of medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine, while considered a form of alternative medicine in the West, is an integral part of the health care system in China and Taiwan.

In the United States, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is currently sponsoring scientific research to answer is Reiki healing legitimate, to learn how it may work and to identify conditions in which it may be most beneficial. With research of this nature, it is difficult to be sure that everything is conducted scientifically. In other words, it may be hard to “prove”. As yet, we have been unable to “prove” that the life energy or “Ki” that is used in Reiki healing exists, but maybe, with time.

Is Reiki healing legitimate? You can answer the question for yourself. Anyone can learn to use Reiki energy to improve their own health and well-being. Training is much less expensive than it was at one time and books that cover the basics are available on-line. To learn more, please visit Understanding Reiki.com.

Saving A Knocked-Out Tooth - Knocked-Out Tooth Emergency First Aid Kit

Knocked-Out Tooth is a common accident, especially among children, sports related activities and even on the road. In the US alone, almost five million teeth got knocked-out from the mouth every year. Ninety percent of these teeth could have been saved and reinserted back if proper preservation techniques has been used during the time of the accident or incident.

Parents, caregivers or people present during the accident usually bring the knocked-out tooth to th dentist in the hope that it can be replanted. However, generally if the initial necessary steps to keep the tooth viable for replantation is not taken, the chances of a successful replantation of the knocked-out tooth becomes minimal or at most zero.

Generally, the public understanding is that submerging the tooth in milk will preserve it. The truth is that the main component of our tooth is enamel. It is one of the hardest substance in our body. However, once the tooth is out of a persons mouth, it begins to die. This happens in just 15 minutes. Frequently, without proper storage, within two hours the tooth is dead. For the tooth to be successfully replanted, the periodontal ligament has to be kept alive. This periodontal ligament is a thin layer of cells surrounding the tooth.

A device was developed by Dr Paul R. Krasner, a professor at Temple University School of Dentistry. This patented 6-part system is a good way to keep the tooth alive during a knocked-out accident and during transportation from the accident venue to the dentist. Dr Krasners system addresses the two primary causes of replanted tooth loss :

* tooth cell crushing (especially during transportation from accident venue to the dentist)
* tooth cell dehydration

The system uses a scientifically engineered removable basket to suspend the tooth in a formulated pH balanced fluid. It helps to keep the tooth in a save environment, which prevents additional trauma. A tooth that has been out of a persons mouth, when placed in the solution within 2 hours can be preserved for up to four days. This will give doctors time to utilize the tooth while repairing the external injury.

The system is called Save-A-Tooth. It is recommended by Clinical Research Associates and the Emergency Research Council Institute and is endorsed by the American Dental Association. It is also the only tooth preserving system that is approved by FDA. In clinical studies, it has been shown to be 91% successful.

A company in Singapore, known as 2TH Gen (pronounced as Tooth Gen), has comprehensively packed the Save-A-Tooth together with the necessary Wound Management products from brands like 3M, Smith & Nephew and London Healthcare Limited, as a quick-response one-stop preservation of the knocked-out tooth, on site. This kit is known as the Knocked-Out Tooth Emergency First Aid Kit.

Original tooth is natures ideal implants. By using the original tooth for replantation during a knocked-out also saves the patient money. A prosthetic tooh can costs a few thousand dollars. This, however will never compare to a real tooth.

Due to the cost to benefit ratio of the Knocked-Out Tooth Emergency First Aid Kit, it is a prudent addition to all first aid kits.

So please seriously consider keeping the Knocked-Out Tooth Emergency First Aid Kit handy. Don not put your family at risk because accidents can happen at any time, anywhere and to anyone.

You may not be able to prevent accidents but you can definitely help to retain smiles.

Excruciating Sciatica

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by alexis

Have you ever experienced such excruciating pain that standing up becomes a great difficulty? Sometimes, sitting down makes the pain even worse. A lot of people may be doing something so simple and yet a certain body movement would cause them unbearable pain. You may be experiencing sciatica.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica, or sciatic nerve pain, is a condition in which the sciatic nerves in the body become inflamed. Sciatic nerves are found beginning at the lower spine and continue down the buttocks area, back of the legs, and into the feet. Symptoms of sciatica is characterized by a light tingling feeling or burning sensation to a full blown shooting pain that travels from the lower back, buttocks area, back of legs, and/or feet. More often than not, sciatic nerve pain affects only one side, although it could also be possible to run down both legs.

Sciatica could be a frightening experience especially if you do not realize what is happening. One may begin to feel like he/she will become crippled. However, most of the time sciatica can be treated effectively.

Causes of Sciatica Sciatica may occur when the nerve in the lower spine become pinched, or if there is a slipped disk. Arthritis or a sprained ligament will narrow the passageways of the nerves which may cause the nerve endings to become tender and inflamed. Other causes of sciatica include an abscess, growth, or blood clot. But these can be rare.

Treatment of Sciatica

Since sciatic nerve pain is caused by a combined pressure and inflammation on the nerve root, treatment is generally focused on relieving both of these factors through non-surgical treatments and/or surgical methods.

Non-surgical sciatic nerve pain treatment may include one or a combination of medical treatments and alternative (non-medical) treatments. Most of the time, it includes some form of exercise and stretching.

If you are experiencing sciatica, it is advised to stay off your feet for the first few days. One of the things you must avoid is to get up and down repeatedly as this will only cause the nerve to become more irritated. Though some quarters pose question on the benefits of bed rest, still it is advisable at least for the first few days.

It may feel soothing to soak in warm baths to ease the pain. However, do not use heating pads while the nerve is inflamed. Prolonged heat will draw the inflammation in and will keep the swelling high. Rather, most healthcare professionals would advise the application of ice packs directly on the lower back area for 20 minutes at a time, every couple of hours. This may feel a little uncomfortable, but the cold packs will greatly help in reducing the swelling. Using mineral ice is also a good alternative in soothing the pain and offers a temporary sciatic relief.

Though some doctors may prescribe muscle relaxants for temporary relief of pain, caution is advised as to the side effects of these types of prescription drugs. Some medications can be addictive, or may give a false sense of feeling better.

Massage therapy is considered to be a highly effective non-surgical treatment as it can keep your spine in better alignment for longer periods of time. As soon as your back begins to heal, your doctor may give you stretching and low impact exercises so that your muscles won't stiffen too much. Be sure to engage in exercise only when your doctors approve it.

Alternative treatments that you might find available and helpful are accupressure, accupuncture, herbal therapies, homeopathy, biofeedback, and guided imagery to name just a few.

Surgical methods to remove the portion of the disc that is irritating the nerve root are micro discectomy or lumbar laminectomy, and discectomy. Surgery helps relieve both the pressure and the inflammation especially if the sciatic nerve pain is severe and has not been relieved through medical treatments.

The Cause Of Rosacea Is Discovered

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by: Rusty Ford

If you are one of the 45 million people who suffer with Rosacea then there is good news on the horizon. Scientists have finally found the cause of Rosacea, which has baffled the medical community for over a hundred years. In a study published in August 2007 online edition of Nature Medicine's, the researchers showed that Rosacea is caused by an abundance of abnormal skin proteins. This protein is called Rosacea, which is a natural protein that protects the skin from infection.

Rosacea is a skin condition that effects fair-skinned people of mostly northwestern European descent. It is also about three times more common in women. It usually effects people between 30 and 60. It begins as flushing and redness on the central face and across the cheeks, nose, or forehead but can also less commonly affect the neck and chest. As it advances it causes small, red, pus-filled bumps or pustules to form that look like acne.

The way our bodies process cathelicidin determines whether this type of protein will defend against infection or cause inflammation and skin irritation. The study showed that people with Rosacea had too much cathelicidin most of which was in an abnormal form.

Currently the only way to treat Rosacea is to treat its symptoms and things that trigger an outbreak such as spicy food and heat. Antibiotics are used to treat the acne like symptoms and intense light and laser therapy that uses multiple wavelengths of light are used to treat dilated blood vessels in the face. Now that scientists know the cause treatments can be developed that will treat the cause of the disease. One of the more effective treatments is the use of tetracycline antibiotics. It turns out that this type of antibiotic is more effective because it happens to inhibit cathelicidin processing.

Now that researchers can concentrate on the cause you can expect to see new treatments in the near future that will help control the body’s production of cathelicidin proteins. They will also be looking for the reason that patients with Rosacea not only produce too much cathelicidin but also why they produce abnormal cathelicidin proteins. The combination should produce more effective treatments.

Cathelicidin proteins have connections with other skin conditions such as Eczema. Hopefully as scientist develop a better understanding of cathelicidin proteins and the way our bodies produce them, they will be able to develop better treatments for a variety of skin conditions.

Finding the Right Defibrillator Pads

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Mark Glazer

Once you've decided on a defibrillator, you'll need to consider keeping the correct defibrillator pads stocked and ready in case of emergency. More schools, businesses, and organizations are buying portable, automated external defibrillators or AEDs to help save the life of someone in cardiac arrest.

Research shows that survival rates increase when defibrillation is used during the first five minutes of cardiac arrest. The symptoms for this condition include a sudden loss of consciousness and the absence of normal breathing. Sadly, the majority of individuals who suffer an attack will not survive, in some cases because a defibrillator doesn't get to the patient in time.

Defibrillators use pads that cover the electrodes. The pads are placed on the patient's chest and help deliver the life-saving shock to the heart. A portable defibrillator generally has directions on where to place the pads, as these units are designed for use with minimal training. Pads conform to the shape of the patient's body for appropriate adhesion and contact with the skin.

When considering pads, it is important to keep in mind the age of potential patients. An older individual with a history of cardiac arrest who keeps a unit in his home will probably only need to have adult pads on hand. In contrast, schools or day cares should have both child and adult pads available. Defibrillator pads for infants and children reduce the shock produce to levels safe for children.

Infant or children's pads should be used for patients who are less than eight years old or who are less than 55 pounds. The pads will read the patient's heart rate just as adult pads do, but they adjust the energy for children. Children's pads are clearly labeled as such to avoid confusion in an emergency and have been designed so that little training is needed to use them. The portable defibrillator in combination with the pads ensures that clear instructions are given and that the charge is adjusted.

Professionals have designed both adult and children's defibrillator pads so that they will withstand CPR and emergency conditions. Choose pads that are designed for the particular unit purchased to ensure optimal use. If possible for your unit, look for pads that are compatible with manual defibrillators so emergency responders can continue to use the pads with they arrive. This will save time when it counts, getting help to the patient more quickly.

Once you've purchased your defibrillator, purchase appropriate additional pads for your unit. If the unit may need to be used on children or infants, buy these specific pads as well. You may also want to consider buying training pads so that caregivers or staff members can practice using the unit before an emergency hits.

Making sure you have the right defibrillator pads is critical. If you want to check your home defibrillator, visit http://www.defibinfo.com/ to see if you have the right ones.

Doctor transforms into Patient for Stem Cell Treatment

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Jerry Steele

A doctor from Hawaii traveled all the way to Thailand to become a patient to treat his heart disease. Dr. George Smith was treated for his heart condition with adult stem cell therapy for the 2nd time.

Dr.George Smith from Hawaii, who was used to treating patients, made the journey to Bangkok to become a patient to receive adult stem cell therapy for the second time. The first stem cell treatment was a success, but Dr. Smith was hoping for even more improvement the second time around.

Dr. Smith's story is not atypical. 'I had a massive coronary a little over five years ago and after three years began the descent into heart failure. I was on all the medicines; the alpha and beta blockers, the ace inhibitors, platelet tablets, fish oil and aspirin, but still going downhill and I was not a candidate for a heart transplant,' he said. 'My cardiologist said "Why not? I certainly have nothing else to offer you", and so I came to Bangkok in February of 2006. By April I was feeling quite well. I had no shortness of breath and my Six Minute Walk Test had already doubled. I had stopped my descent but wanted more,' he added.

After consulting the company's cardiologist in the U.S. Dr. Smith was clearly of the opinion that his myocardial muscle regeneration had outgrown the microcirculation in the heart. 'It was not the big blood vessels that were the problem, but the small ones. We felt that the second procedure with a catheter injection of stem cells directly into the coronary arteries would assist the regrowth of small blood vessels' he said. His local cardiologist agreed as all he could offer was further juggling of medications.

The patient and a medical friend were very impressed with the staff and the equipment at Bangkok Hospital. The equipment to give him a radioactive scan of his heart was state-of-the-art and the whole procedure took about half as long as it would have at home.

Dr. Smith is certain that stem cells to aid microvascularization will get him back to playing tennis. All he could do before the first procedure was walk the dog for a block and then sit down. He could read but was unable to do any of the things he enjoyed, like bike riding, tennis and working in the yard. 'My life was closing in on me. There comes a point where the medicines no longer give you a quality of life and, of course, heart transplants are reserved for the young. And so, you run out of slack and you run out of options,' he said.

Researching via the Internet and talking to patients who have had adult stem cell therapy is an option patients in heart failure should consider, according to this doctor. 'The improvements ex-patients will talk about are certainly not psychological because they will be able to give objective results like how far they can
