Bad Breath Can Be More Dangerous Than It First Appears To Be

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , , , , , , ,

You will most certainly have bad breath if you suffer from active gum disease (bleeding gums), or if you are dieting successfully. Normally you will have diminished salivary flow and be prone to bad breath if you are over 55 years of age, or if you take antidepressants, birth control, sinus, or heart medicines. Others who smoke or drink alcohol will have bad breath too.

A study done by Anne Bosy, co-founder of the Fresh Breath Clinic in Toronto, found that most people with bad breath do not have gum disease. Instead, she found that sulphur-producing bacteria live at the back of the tongue, bedding down under plaque and mucous. These bacteria are a source of halitosis.

If there is a white film covering the tongue then you can be sure that there are millions of bacteria resident there.

Because there is an oxygen-poor environment at the rear of the tongue, the gram negative anaerobic bacteria can thrive nicely there and provide a constant supply to the mouth. Hence it is practically impossible to remove all the bacteria from the mouth.

These anaerobic bacteria are B. forsythus, T. denticola, A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. intermedia and P.gingivalis. They are known to be active in periodontal diseases.

Not only does this plaque on the tongue result in bad breath smells, but gum diseases and tooth problems such as gingivitis and periodontitis readily follow.

85% of all cases of bad breath originate in the mouth, and 90% of those are caused by the coatings on the tongue. It has been shown previously in various studies that the major components of halitosis are the mercaptans and hydrogen sulphide.

Studies into human behaviour have shown that nobody likes to let anybody else know that they have bad breath, not even their closest partners - usually out of fear of embarrassing them.

Fairly shocking news just released connects the bacteria in our mouths to heart disease and other serious diseases.

Under the coating on the tongue are several bacteria, and one of them is the main actor in periodontal disease. When the gums are damaged or bleeding, this bacteria get into the bloodstream and travels through the body. It is thought that it may be causing damage even to the heart.

Several of the bacteria in the mouth have been shown to enter the bloodstream through the gums and cause blood clots and damage heart muscle tissue. Some recent studies have shown that one particular bacteria called Clostridium perfingens, which is very often found in the oral cavity, is suspected of being the major culprit.

Researchers claim that there may be a direct connection between gum diseases in pregnant women and low birth weights of their offspring. They say it could be an effect of the toxic by-products of the bacteria.

Some studies are showing a connection betweem diabetes and periodontal disease.

Bacteria found in the mouth can end up in the airways and increase the risk of complications associated with chronic lung conditions and respiratory disease.

A lot of toxins and metabolic waste is removed from the body while we sleep through the tongue coating, as many people are aware, but do we consider the fact that much of this can be re-ingested with our very first meal of the day!

Metabolism Boosting Four Biggest Myths

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

The Four Biggest Myths Of Boosting Your Metabolism.

Myth #1: Diet Pills
Myth #2: Drop Caloric Intake
Myth #3: Low Intensity Workouts
Myth #4: Too Much Focus

1. Diet Pills--The problem here is that many makers of diet pills offer claims that simply aren’t realistic; and if you read the fine-print of most of these advertisements, you’ll see that they really are too good to be true. Little notes like the claims made in this advertisement are not typical and should be enough of a wake-up call to realize that there’s more to the story.

In some cases, diet pills can help boost metabolism temporarily. This, however, can be risky and generally should not be done without a doctor’s ok. Unfortunately, people can become somewhat addicted to diet pills, and this can lead to disaster.

2. Drop Your Caloric Intake--The thing to remember is that the body’s ability to lose weight is not controlled by calories. Calories are the input. The real control mechanism is that famous concept that you’ve become very familiar with: metabolism.

So with that being said, cutting down your caloric intake to, say, 1000 calories a day isn’t necessarily going to help you lose weight; because it doesn’t necessarily change your metabolism.

3. Low Intensity Workouts--It’s fair to say that any exercise is better than no exercise. So if you lead a sedentary lifestyle, then even walking around your block for 10 minutes a day is going to do something positive for your body and its metabolism.

Low intensity workouts simply don’t lead to a faster metabolism; they can’t. Remember, metabolism is a process.

If you don’t achieve a high-intensity workout, your body can’t tap into itself to achieve catabolism; it won’t need to.

4. Too Much Focus--Speeding up your metabolism and achieving your weight loss goals involves a certain degree of focus; after all, there are a lot of things competing for your attention (including those delicious desserts!), and you certainly need to be able to keep your eye on the goal in order to maintain your program.

Yet sometimes too much focus can be a bad thing; and some dieters understand this all too well. Remember: speeding up your metabolism is a holistic effort that includes exercise, lifestyle, and diet changes.

Focusing on only one of these at the expense of the others (either one or both) can be detrimental. In fact, in some cases, it can be counter-productive.

4 Signs You Should Eat More to Lose Weight

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by: Shannon Tani

Did you know that eating too little can actually prevent you from losing weight? It's true. When you eat below a certain amount of calories (this level is different for everyone), your body enters "starvation mode" and tries to hold on to all the fat that it has so that it can survive.

The good news is that by eating more food, you can fire up your metabolism and start losing weight again.

Here are four signs that you should start eating more:

  1. You have a lot of weight to lose. The higher your weight, the more calories your body burns just to function on a daily level. A good rule of thumb is to figure that [your body weight X 10] is the number of calories that your body needs to maintain its current weight. If you want to lose weight, you should subtract 500 from this number and that is how many calories you should eat in a day.
  2. You have a high muscle mass. Muscle burns more energy than fat, so if you have a higher muscle mass, then you may need to eat more calories to keep your body fueled.
  3. You exercise a lot. If you exercise hard for an hour a day, five times a week, then you may need more calories. Strenuous exercise burns a lot of calories and if you are not eating enough to maintain this level of activity, you're body will think that it's starving (even if you actually are eating) and will try to keep its fat for energy.
  4. You've hit a plateau. If you've been successfully losing weight by eating right and exercising and your weight loss suddenly comes to a screeching halt, you may need more food. Your body has gotten used to this level of food and activity. Try eating an extra 200 calories a day and see if that doesn't fire up your metabolism.

Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle is one of the most comprehensive books on nutrition, weight loss, and muscle gain that I have read. It contains much more detailed information about eating enough food to lose weight. To read my full review of it, Please visit Better Off Fat.

Shannon Tani is a former fattie, who weighed over 220lbs. She has currently lost over 70lbs. One day she realized that people would rather hear dieting advice from someone who's "been there, done that" than a boring old doctor who's never been fat a day in his life. So she started the website Better Off Fat to share her experiences and ideas.

Pregnancy Skincare - Discover The Powerful Healing Capabilities Of Natural Skincare Products

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By: Mark

There are a number of concerns a woman has during pregnancy including various pregnancy skincare issues she may encounter. During her pregnancy, she must not only be cautious about what she eats, but she must also avoid certain bad health habits such as drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking. It is important that pregnant women practice a healthy lifestyle, not only to maintain her own health, but also to maintain the health of her unborn baby.

Most pregnant women apply a number of different cosmetics to their skin, hair and nails each day, however they should always take into account the ingredients contained in these products. Some of these commercial products may contain coal tar derivatives, talc, synthetic colors and fragrances, propylene glycol (which is not a problem if it is naturally derived), and the synthetic preservatives methyl and propyl parabens. In addition, some commercial toothpaste may contain toxic ingredients and should be avoided by women during pregnancy.

Most women use cosmetics to not only enhance their appearance, but also to highlight certain features of their face, such as their eyes, lips, and facial skin. Many women use soaps, moisturizers and toners on a daily basis in order to help maintain the integrity of their skin. Additionally, they may also use cosmetics in the form of blushes, mascaras, lipstick and lip gloss.

A particular class of chemicals found in cosmetics is phthalates. These chemicals are often found in nail polish and other skin care products that contain fragrances. Whenever possible, these chemicals (phthalates) should be avoided. Consumers can do this by using only those skin care products that are chemical free and organically derived. Avoiding these chemicals is especially important during pregnancy as there have been claims that they may affect reproduction and possibly damage the heart and lungs. If you use conventional cosmetics, you may wish to have a blood test to determine if you have phthalates in your system. You should also consider switching from conventional cosmetics to mineral cosmetics and organic cosmetics. This simple change will help you avoid the harsh synthetic chemical colorants found in these products.

During pregnancy, women are often faced with unique pregnancy skincare conditions. There are a number of different treatment options available for treating these conditions. One skincare issue that may arise is a condition called Herpes gestationis.

A major symptom of Herpes gestationis is abdominal blisters. When we hear about herpes, we normally associate it with fever blisters found on the lips or genital area. It should be noted that Herpes gestationis is not related to herpes simplex. H. gestationis may develop at the end of pregnancy and will eventually subside after delivery.

As with all skin and health conditions encountered during pregnancy it is important to discuss with your family physician any and all side effects associated with any pharmaceutical or natural medicines that you are taking since some of them may cause harm to your unborn baby. The medications that normally are prescribed for Herpes gestationis are corticosteroids. The side effects associated with these medications include: increased blood pressure and the possibility of hypoadrenalism in the child. It is important to weigh the risks and benefits of this treatment against the skin condition. You should also ask your doctor is there are safer treatment options that you can use. It should be noted that even though this skin affliction does occur during pregnancy, it is a rare condition.

Occasionally, hair loss may occur in women during pregnancy. Fortunately for most women, their hair will grow back naturally. Some doctors may prescribe multivitamin and mineral supplements to help facilitate hair growth. Women should consult with the doctor if their hair does not begin to grow back.

The onset of psoriasis may be noticed by some pregnant woman. Psoriasis is not contagious and will improve for some women and worsen for others during pregnancy. While there are different forms of this skin condition, the most common type is characterized by red patchy skin with white or silver scales. Fortunately, this type of psoriasis is usually located on the parts of the body that can be concealed by clothing; however, it can also appear on the scalp. There are a number of different medications that can be used to treat this condition, but some doctors advise their patients not to use these prescription medications during pregnancy.

It is often because of these dangerous side effects that many people today are taking a more holistic approach to their health care needs. The use of certain natural compounds has been shown to be beneficial in treating psoriasis, and it does this without the harmful side effects that may take place with chemical products and medications.

Aloe Vera is widely known and has been used for centuries as a healing agent for the skin. When applied topically it helps soothe the pain from a burn. This botanical has been tested on patients suffering from psoriasis, and a topical cream was shown to be helpful in treating this skin condition. Other aloe preparations were applied to those patients who suffered from plaque psoriasis, but those compounds did not produce any better results when compared to the treatment administered to the placebo group. It should be noted that there are several species of aloe, and it may be true that certain species of this plant produce more beneficial medicinal properties than other varieties of this plant. In order to evaluate the true effectiveness of this botanical compound, more scientific studies are needed to determine its value in treating psoriasis.

The results of these studies conducted on the aloe vera were published in the Tropical Medicine and International Health Journal.

Many of us like spicy foods and have added cayenne pepper to our foods to give it an extra kick. This spice has been added to topical creams and a study has confirmed its effectiveness in reducing the scaling and red patchy skin encountered by those suffering from psoriasis. Discuss with your family physician if this natural food substance can be added to your pregnancy skin care treatment program to help control or possibly alleviate this skin condition.

The above are only a few of the pregnancy skin care issues that women must face. It is always best to discuss your problems with your gynecologist or family physician and follow their advice. Each and every day, there are more and more pharmaceutical and natural compounds being researched to help treat the various skin care conditions that arise during pregnancy. As we have seen, the use of natural botanical compounds has been shown to be helpful in treating some of these conditions. A qualified holistic physician can prescribe the most appropriate treatment choice for your needs.

Keep in mind that some herbal compounds have drug-like effects, and they may or may not be suited for you during pregnancy. Utilizing the services of a qualified alternative physician can help combine the best of western and complimentary medicine in order to help relieve the discomfort and unsightly appearance of the skin conditions that occur during pregnancy.

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

There is a lot of discrepancy on whether body wraps offer permanent results when used on a regular basis. Herniated Lumbar Disc - Care For lumbar herniated disk

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Franchis Adam

The spine is made up of a series of bones connecting to each other commonly known as the vertebrae. The lumbar disc acts as a cushion between each bone of the vertebra, made up of strong connecting tissue. The lumbar disc has a hard exterior with a soft gel inside. As a person gets older typically this fluid is diminished, thus making it a not so effective cushion for the spine. Further to this, the center of the disc may also become herniated or, in other words, displaced. A lumbar herniated disc usually occurs to the two discs from the bottom of the lumbar spine.

A lumbar herniated disc can put pressure on the spinal nerves causing the condition known as sciatica. A lumbar herniated disc like other types of herniated disc is characterized by numbness, weakness, tingling and/or pain in the leg. Currently approximately 1 to 2 percent of individuals between the ages of thirty and fifty suffer from Sciatica. This is a frightening statistic, and one that demands attention. Back pain may also be caused by a lumbar herniated disc but if this is not accompanied by pain in the leg, then there may a different cause.

The good news for sufferers of a lumbar herniated disc, is that surgery is not required in eighty to ninety percent of cases. Normally, the physician will recommend non-surgical options to treat the lumbar herniated disc such as a short rest period, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, physical therapy, exercises, and injection therapy.

Non-surgical treatments aim to reduce disc and nerve irritation and improve the patient's physical condition in order to protect the patient's spine and enhance general function. An organized treatment and care program combining a number of the aforementioned treatments is effective in treating the majority of lumbar herniated disc patients.

After observing the recommended period of non-surgical treatment, if the pain still persists with the lumbar herniated disc, and hinders the patients from normal activities even after the completion of non-operative treatments, then the physician may recommend surgery as a last resort.

It is important to note that the patient may not regain complete leg strength with surgery but it can serve to prevent further weakness in the legs as well as relieve pain. In fact, surgical treatment is typically recommended in order to relieve leg pain but it is not as successful as relief for the back pain itself.

After surgery, you should rely on your doctor's advice in terms of which activities are suitable. Obviously this will depend on the severity of the lumbar herniated disc The first step after surgery is to take basic steps to see if there are any lingering pain issues. In most cases patients are able to go home on the same day or within 24 hours of the lumbar herniated disc surgery. The following activities should be avoided by patients following the surgery: bending forward, lifting heavy objects, sitting for a prolonged time and driving. It is advisable to follow a rehabilitation program recommended by your physician or hospital. You doctor or physician will be able to assist in determining which exercises and rehabilitation methods will be most effective in reducing the chance of the lumbar herniated disc returning.

Secret to Losing All Your Post-Pregnancy Weight

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , , ,

There is a way to lose the weight after having kids – and it doesn't have to take hours out of your day or mean that you can't eat anything ever again. In fact, 15 minutes, a couple times per week may be enough to get you the results that you're looking for and make you happy with yourself and confident again.

Hard to believe, isn't it?

Imagine how hard it was for my wife to believe me when I told her. You can believe that she's always been my toughest customer. But, when she finally did give these exercise techniques a chance, she loved the results. Here's what she had to say:

My name is Tamara Kauppinen and I had my fifth child (that's right, fifth!) in October of 2005. I was 34 years old and after having Keion, I, like every other mom, wanted to lose the baby weight that I put on during pregnancy (which by the way was 43 pounds). I am a fairly small person to begin with so this was a lot of weight to put on for me.

Before I go on, let me tall you that after having my fourth child I worked hard, ate somewhat healthy and got down to a size 2 and some 4's. When I say that I worked hard, I mean I WORKED HARD. I got up 5 days a week at 4:30 am to get to the gym to get in my 1 1/2 hours at the gym. Rain or shine, and even during a February snowstorm where I ended up in the ditch I dragged myself in to work out. I did weights for about 40 minutes and the rest of the time I spent on the cardio machines. I rotated through the different cardio machines at the gym; the treadmill (which I HATE running), the elliptical, the stairclimber. I got so that I could do 60 minutes of hard intense cardio. I totally saw the results and really didn't have to curb my eating habits. (I am a very much a chips and salsa girl. Anything with salt and I am in heaven!)

So right before I got pregnant with my 5th baby, I weighed about 117 pounds and I am 5'7'. I was fit if I do say so myself. I tried sticking with my workout program once I got pregnancy, but it's hard to stick with something so intense! Especially the 4:30 am thing, I just wanted to sleep.

Anyway, I'm sure that if you have gotten this far you are wondering why I am writing this and it is NOT to brag trust me! After babe number five, I just still couldn't get motivated to eat healthy again and lose the weight, plus there was no way that I was going to get back up at 4:30 am after being up all night with an infant. I decided that I was just going to have to be 15 pounds heavier and that I would have to learn to live with it.

Then I listened to a "wise" man and tried a different type of workout. That man turned out to be my husband, Tim. Now, if you're like me, the last person you want to admit is right is your hubbie. So, I ignored his advice for a long time. Even though he had been a successful athlete and coach for years, there was no way I was going to give him the satisfaction of being able to say "I told you so".

But, eventually I got so frustrated with myself and the lack of results I was getting from "regular" cardio that I decided to give his way a shot. And (for only the second time that I'm willing to admit it to him), he was right.

What Tim suggested was to add more intensity to my workouts. To include short, intense bursts in my workouts – sprint interval training, he called it. More specifically Tim told me about his favorite type of interval training – running hill sprints.

Remember that I HATE running, but I gave it a try (without telling my dear husband, of course). But seriously, after one workout, I was hooked. All it has taken for me to lose all of my baby weight and stick to my not so great diet has been hill sprinting. I started wearing the clothes I wanted to – and was excited to shop in all my favorite stores again.

For me the best thing about these workouts is that it takes only 15 minutes of my time, a day and two per week. I saw results within one week and I could still eat what I wanted and was losing flab! Plus, it's about as close to free as you can get. All you need is yourself and some sort of hill or stairs - and it doesn't matter what kind of shape you're in now ( because you can adjust this training to any fitness level).

Are there other ways to get back in shape? Sure, I am not saying that working out hard at the gym isn't worth it. But I know that I haven't found a more efficient, more effective way to blowtorch the blubber off than by running these sprints.

If you're a busy mom like me, with limited time but the desire to get back into pre-baby weight (no matter how many kids you've had), then I strongly suggest you give uphill fitness training a chance. Believe me, you're going to love your results. Just don't tell my husband that he was right.

What is Trans Fat?

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by Benjamin Glenn

Trans fat is the common name for a type of unsaturated fat with trans isomer fatty acids. Trans fats may be monounsaturated or polyunsaturated.

Trans fats are produced when liquid oil is made into a solid fat. This process is called hydrogenation. Trans fats act like saturated fats and can raise your cholesterol level. Trans fats are listed on the label, making it easier to identify these foods. Unless there is at least 0.5 grams or more of trans fat in a food, the label can claim 0 grams. If you want to avoid as much trans fat as possible, you must read the ingredient list on food labels. Look for words like hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil. Select foods that either do not contain hydrogenated oil or where a liquid oil is listed first in the ingredient list.

Most trans fats consumed today are industrially created by partially hydrgenating plant oils -- a process developed in the early 1900s and first commercialized as Crisco in 1911. ( Otherwise known as Lard) The goal of partial hydrogenation is to add hydrogen atoms to unsaturated fats, making them more saturated. These more saturated fats have a higher melting point making them attractive for baking, and extending their shelf-life

Unlike other dietary fats, trans fats are neither required nor beneficial for health. Eating trans fats increases the risk of coronary heart desease. For these reasons, health authorities worldwide recommend that consumption of trans fat be reduced to trace amounts. Trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are generally considered to be more of a health risk than those occurring naturally.

Sources of trans fat include:

Processed foods like snacks (crackers and chips) and
baked goods (muffins, cookies and cakes) with
hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil
Stick margarines
Shortening
Some fast food items such as french fries
Cholesterol

There you have it. Trans fat is just a pretty name for Lard, which has been around and clogging arteries for close to a century. It seems that the things that we enjoy the best are always the most dangerous to us.

If you can't put down those fries or chips, try to at least cut back on the amount that you consume. Your heart and arteries will thank you for it. Below is some information to think about while consuming that double burger you love so well.

Cancer: There is no scientific consensus that consumption of trans fats significantly increases cancer risks across the board. However, one recent study has found connections between trans fat and prostate cancer.

Diabetes: There is a growing concern that the risk of type 2 diabetes increases with trans fat consumption Obesity: Research indicates that trans fat may increase weight gain and abdominal fat, despite a similar caloric intake. Although obesity is frequently linked to trans fat in the popular media, this is generally in the context of eating too many calories; there is no scientific consensus connecting trans fat and obesity.

Liver Dysfunction: Trans fats are metabolized differently by the liver than other fats and interfere with delta 6 desaturase. (Delta 6 desaturase is an enzyme involved in converting essential fatty acids to arachidonic acid and prostaglandis both of which are important to the functioning of cells.)

Infertility: One 2007 study found, "Each 2% increase in the intake of energy from trans unsaturated fats, as opposed to that from carbohydrates, was associated with a 73% greater risk of ovulatory infertility...".

Guidance for New Alzheimer’s Caregivers

ป้ายกำกับ:

Caring for a parent, spouse, sibling or other loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be a rewarding experience that builds your inner strength and character. Caregivers usually assume the care giving role out of love and a desire to help a family member in need. The selfless act of care giving is widely respected and will certainly make you a stronger and more confident in your ability to make a positive difference in another person’s life.

Usually, care giving begins with just helping out a family member, showing love and support by making his or her day a little easier. Alzheimer’s patients experience more severe symptoms with time, resulting in the need for increased care and supervision as time goes on. In time, the lifestyle associated with the “caregiver” role can sneak up on even the most active and driven caregiver. Though caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease brings with it numerous rewards, it is not uncommon for caregivers to find themselves overwhelmed at times as they strive to establish a harmonious balance between their own needs and the needs of their loved one.

An Alzheimer’s caregiver can become so consumed with the demands of caring for a loved one while upholding other daily responsibilities that his or her own health becomes neglected. The symptoms often experienced by full time Alzheimer’s caregivers, such as guilt, anger, exhaustion and depression, are so consistent and debilitating that they are collectively being referred to by some medical professionals as “caregiver syndrome.” Some experts suggest that simply acknowledging oneself as a “caregiver” and identifying with the role can lead a person to better deal with the responsibilities associated with caretaking. Realizing that care giving is not unlike taking on a second job can put caregivers in the proper mindset to provide the best care for their loved one with Alzheimer’s and for themselves.

As the world becomes more aware of the long term effects of caring for a loved one with dementia, more resources are becoming available to help caregivers effectively manage the responsibilities. Support groups and training programs for Alzheimer’s caregivers offer guidance that can lead to less stress for caregivers and delay the need to move their loved ones into professional full-time care.

If you have recently taken on the responsibility of being the primary caretaker for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to remain in tune with your own needs and emotions. You may feel angry or exhausted at times due to the unpredictable nature of Alzheimer’s disease. Realize that such emotions are common among Alzheimer’s caregivers, release yourself of any guilt caused by them and move on. Do not neglect taking time for yourself once in a while to regroup and relax. If your loved one requires constant supervision, have another friend or relative take over caretaking duties or take advantage of respite care at a local Alzheimer’s care facility so that you may create time for yourself. Establishing a balance between tending to your innate needs and those of your loved one will make you a better, more effective caregiver and affect a more positive environment for everyone involved.

The Best Foods To Be taken During Menopause

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Judy Wellsworth

As women age, their bodies gradually begin to change in response to the changes in their hormonal balances. When a woman has reached the end of her childbearing years, she is likely to experience a reduced interest in sex, the cessation of her menstrual cycle, and other physical symptoms like night sweats, hot flashes, and mood shifts.

The physical changes she experiences at the end of her reproductive life are brought on by the same hormones which were responsible for the puberty which signaled its beginning. And hormones, as chemicals naturally produced in the body, can be affected by the food a woman eats as she is undergoing menopause. There are foods which can aggravate the symptoms of menopause, and there are foods to be taken during menopause which can alleviate them. The foods to be taken during menopause ought to be as natural and unprocessed as possible.

Beware Of Your Supermarket The foods to be taken during menopause include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, organic if available, and plenty of whole grain cereals, breads, and pastas. The best way to find the foods to be taken during menopause is to restrict your grocery shopping to the aisles on the perimeter of your supermarket, because that is where the freshest, most nutritious foods are traditionally stocked.

Supermarkets almost universally place their sugary, salty, and high-fat snack foods on their interior aisles, and any list of the best foods to be taken during menopause is going to be noticeably lacking in those sorts of foods. The sugar and chemicals in those processed foods can have a profound effect on a menopausal woman's emotional state, and heighten her uncomfortable physical symptoms as well.

Water, Water, Water Another of the foods to be taken during menopause is water. Even though water is the chief ingredient of all vegetables and fruits, menopausal women will benefit greatly from consuming six to eight glasses of water throughout the day. By making water your beverage of choice at meal times, you will have no difficulty meeting the rest of your quota during the rest of the day.

Every woman who lives long enough will experience menopause. But those women who are prepared can, to a great extent, control the quality of their menopausal years. If you make an effort to eat mostly those foods to be taken during menopause, you will both reduce the severity of your menopausal symptoms and improve your overall health as well. While specific foods to be taken during menopause may differ depending on which expert is making recommendations, all of them will encourage you to eat fresh, vitamin and mineral rich fruits and vegetables, and drink plenty of clean water.

Why You Should Avoid Synthetic Hormones For Menopause Treatment

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Menopause can be a difficult time for a woman. The symptoms that accompany menopause can make life nearly unbearable, which leads many women to seek medication to alleviate these symptoms. The problem is that most of the commonly recommended drugs for menopause are made with synthetic hormones that can pose a variety of dangers for the people taking them.

These discomforts include:

Bloating
sexual dysfunction
possibly cancer

The following is an explanation of symptoms associated with menopause, a summary of the dangers, and the various benefits of natural menopause treatments.

Menopause strikes most women between the ages of 48-55 and brings with it hot flashes, night sweats, problems urinating, and discomfort during sexual activity. While most of these symptoms are merely annoying, some of them create a major disruption in the lifestyle of the women who suffer from them. Hot flashes are the most common and are often accompanied by headaches, nausea and heart palpitations (irregular heartbeats).

The problem with using synthetic or man-made hormones to treat the symptoms of menopause is that the body does not recognize the artificial hormones and will not readily absorb and accept the hormones. In fact your body may activity work against these artificial hormones, which will cause more problems with your body. Common results from using the synthetic hormones include weight gain and water retention, discomfort during sex or lack of sex drive, and may be a contributing factor for some cases of breast, uterine or ovarian cancer. This is mainly due to the fact that the body does not recognize the artificial hormones.

Additionally, these synthetic hormones are only designed to deal with the specific symptom whether it is:

hot flashes
water retention
insomnia

Therefore regard for the entire body or potential side effects are disregarded in the desire of these companies to create a medication that will target and control one single (or possibly two or three) symptom.

If synthetic hormones are so dangerous for menopausal women, why then do the drug companies use them? Simply so they can obtain a patent through the FDA that will allow them to better market their drugs. The regulations of the FDA do not allow drug manufactures to get a patent on natural materials, so the companies must use artificial substances in the making of their medications. So for the good of the drug companies, the general public is lead to buy potentially harmful drugs containing man-made hormones.

The alternative to synthetic hormones is products containing natural hormones derived from plants that your body will recognize as natural and readily absorb the products. With natural hormones, many of the undesirable side effects are eliminated. Better yet, the natural hormones work to deal with a variety of symptoms of menopause, instead of just the few that synthetic treatments affect. Although you won't find FDA approval on natural treatments, you can find medical professionals and written reports of the benefits of naturally produced hormones on women dealing with symptoms of menopause.

Fractionating Laser - Does What the Fraxel Laser does?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Francis Adam

You see ads and offers for whiz-bang fractionating lasers and wonder—do they mean Fraxel? Are they the same thing? Unless you ask and find out it’s a Fraxel, it’s not.

Doctors and spas all over are noticing the increased interest in cosmetic procedures, and many laser companies have responded to the demand. They’ve made it easy for anybody to offer what sounds like the latest and greatest in technology.

This isn’t surprising—because the genuine Fraxel laser does provide a remarkable new technology for reversing the effects of age and sun damage on the skin. Working below the skin’s surface layer, which it leaves intact, the Fraxel targets only certain cells (this is the “fractionating” part). Perfectly computer-controlled and evenly distributed, the laser penetrates to thousands of tiny packets of damaged collagen and eliminates these cells—and this stimulates the skin to replace them by producing new, fresh collagen and elastic tissue.

The result? Smoother skin texture, reduced pore size, toned and tightened skin. The Fraxel laser erases brown spots, including melasma (the “mask of pregnancy”) and smoothes wrinkles. It’s the leading treatment for acne scars. And, because of its technological sophistication, a Fraxel laser treatment involves no recovery time.

So—is it any wonder some doctors want you to think their “fractionating laser” does what the Fraxel laser does?

A true skin expert will invest in the real deal—such as the actual Fraxel SR 1500. Those who wish to take shortcuts will buy what is essentially a “box” with many handpieces available. This saves them from having to invest in the lasers these handpieces imitate. To try to imitate the Fraxel, they’ll buy a “fractionating handpiece.” Then they’ll claim this is just as good and produces the same results.

Well, imitation is a form of flattery. Unfortunately for the consumer, these devices simply can’t produce the same results. In fact, sometimes they’ll produce circles and stripes—or worse yet, burns. Many operate at wavelengths that experts don’t consider fractional at all.

The true Fraxel can be individualized to each client’s needs, and delivers safe, uniform, and outstanding results. But there’s no quick and easy route for doctors to use this advanced technology: specialized training is the only way to learn how best to tailor the Fraxel laser treatment for each client.

It’s in your interest as a consumer to make sure you’re getting both the genuine state-of-the-art technology, and the knowledgeable and properly trained professional to operate it. A Board Certified Dermatologist will understand your skin’s needs and the best treatment. Be sure to ask—and make sure you’re getting a genuine Fraxel laser treatment.

Bad Breath, Oral Health and Weight Loss

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Alien

We dieters out there get so engrossed in the fight or struggle to lose weight at all cost. But one thing and perhaps the last thing some of us never envisaged might happen to us doing this process of losing weight is developing a “BAD BREATH”

Yes, you read right. I’m no scientist nor am I a nutritionist, but one thing I do know and I’m sure some of you out there will attest to is that, some diet will actually give you bad breath whilst losing weight.

Regardless of how much mouthwash you use; how often you brush your teeth. The bottom fact is, this bad breath originates from your stomach and not your mouth. I’m sure we’ve all heard of the saying, “Treat the cause and not the symptom”, or is it the other way around? Well, I’m sure you get the drift.

So, how did I develop this bad breath in the first place, I hear you ask? Let me make one thing clear before I carry on. The bad breath I’m referring to here is attributed to anyone aspiring to lose weight. That is, if you’ve just embarked on losing weight and you’ve suddenly noticed that you’ve developed this bad breath.

However, if you’re not on diet of any kind but then developed bad breath, I’ll suggest you consult your physician or your family doctor, as you may have other symptoms other than just diet problems. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s move on.

Back to how you suddenly developed this bad breath? I’m sure we’ve all heard of the famous “Atkins Diet”, but if not, I’ll explain what it is in a nutshell, without wasting the time of we that already know what it is. It’s simply a diet of complete protein, you simply eat pure protein all day long, hence excluding carbohydrate altogether. Well, some people consume very little of carbohydrate anyway.

Now, eating just pure protein like, chicken (either roasted, fried or boiled), steak, fried eggs, etc and nothing else do work, but the main problem is, pure protein in the gut without or little carbohydrate or any other minerals is what causes the bad breath. So the bad breath is just the gas originating or escaping from your stomach during the digestive process via the mouth and also via the other end – I’m sure you know what end I’m referring.

I’ve met most people on Atkins Diet, and they’ll be the first to admit and tell you how embarrassed they are sometime with their bad breath, but most will tell you it’s worth carrying around a bad breath as long as they continue to lose weight.

There you have it. To avoid bad breath whilst losing weight, or envisaging it, lay off pure Diet of protein, mix your food up a bit, and above all, eat lot of FRUITS. Now, that’s a Bad Breath killer right there.

Lose Your Belly by Improving Your Posture

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By: Li Ming Wong

Everyone knows the children's song about the leg bone being connected to the hip bone, but how many people really take it to heart? Obviously, everyone knows that the leg bone does in fact attach to the hip bone; that's not the point. Probably not many people really stop to think about how related and interconnected the parts of the human body really are. In an illustration of this point, the back and abdominal muscles are all affected by one another as they form a girdle around the lower torso. It stands to reason, then, that your posture affects how your tummy looks, and the strength of your abdominal muscles affects your posture.

Stand Up Straight

This first step to losing a belly is to stand and sit up straight. This actually has a few different effects. First of all, slouching accentuates belly fat, so simply sitting up will make you appear slimmer. Second, proper posture help improves the strength of your back, which of course makes it easier to maintain proper posture longer. Third, poor posture leads to back pain, which makes abdominal exercises difficult. Having good posture will make it easier for you to work out your abdominal muscles and whittle down that belly. Lastly, a nice straight posture enhances blood flow throughout the body, particularly to the legs and lower back, both of which are involved in many abdominal exercises. So, if you are trying to lose a belly, the first step is to simply sit and stand up as straight as possible as often as possible. Do that, and you are already on your way!

Back Extension

For the reader familiar with the crunchless crunch, this move will seem similar but backwards. For this exercise, you will need to start by lying on your abdominal with your forehead on the floor. You may use a mat or towel to cushion your pelvis and head. Position your arms by your sides, palms up. Contract your back muscles to lift your torso off the floor. Hold the contraction briefly, then release and slowly lower your torso back down to the floor. Repeat for an entire set.

The next part of this exercise begins by extended your arms out above your head (picture a superhero flying through the air). Now lift your legs off the floor simultaneously while keeping your head and arms held in place. Try to imagine your legs growing longer as you are lifting them up. Hold your legs up briefly, then slowly lower them back to the floor.

Doing these two things will help you strengthen your back and correct your posture, which are great first steps to losing an unwanted belly. You will also want to continue working on your back muscles and other core muscles, such as the transverse and rectus abdominus. Abdominalexercises that work the core will help you straighten up your posture, lose belly fat, and gain muscle tone in both your back and tummy. As with any workout routine, be sure to consult a professional before beginning and always warm up properly to avoid injury.

Chromortherapy – Healing by Color

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

Chromotherapy is a form of healing based on the principle that all illness is manifested in a disturbed energy field (giving off light), and by the proper application of color to this energy field, a correction can be achieved, and with that correction comes healing.

Experienced and well trained chromotherapists use both color and light to balance the energy fields, and claim to effect a reversal of negative reactions manifesting in our composite physical, mental, and spiritual make up.

Although not yet proven by the modern scientific method, the chromotherapists believe that their methods are indeed scientific, and instruments to verify the results are not yet manifest. Furthermore, chromotherapists adhere to the belief that colors do indeed bring about identifiable emotional reactions in people.

The treatment in chromotherapy is in the application of color and light to specific areas on the body. The therapists believe that colors have both positive and negative effects on the body’s energy fields; with some specific colors in specified doses can effect the actual healing.

The therapists use a whole range of color carriers and emitters such as gemstones, fabrics, prisms, light wands, and colored water in baths.

Endometriosis: The Fear of the Unknown

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

By: aseya

Every month, many young women experience an event that is unique to the female human species: the monthly period. Aside from pregnancy and giving birth, the monthly period is one of the most intricate, memorable, and irritating experiences for a woman. Menstruation, or period, is a woman's monthly bleeding. It is the preparation of a woman's body for pregnancy. Without a pregnancy, the uterus sheds its lining. The blood that is shed includes tissue from inside the uterus or womb. The blood passes out of the body through the vagina. Periods usually start at age 12 and continue until menopause, at about 50. There are certain changes that happen during a woman's menstrual period. Some women become irritated, depressed, and emotional. Physical changes also happen before and during menstruation like having swollen breasts, feeling bloated, head aches, and back pains. However, there are women who suffer severe pain during their menstrual period that could be a symptom for endometriosis.

Endometriosis is not always accompanied by symptoms. But in cases where it does, a woman usually suffers from what is called unusually painful periods or dysmenorrhea. Endometriosis is a disorder in which bits of tissue from the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grow inside a woman's body, outside of the uterus. The uterus is a hollow organ within a woman's abdomen where a fertilized egg is implanted and develops into a baby normally over a period of nine months. During the menstrual cycle, some cells pass outside the uterus and implant themselves in the pelvis, ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines, and even in the lungs. The misplaced bits of the endometrial tissue can cause pain and irregular bleeding. It can also affect a woman's ability to become pregnant.

Endometriosis is diagnosed through physical examination. Occasionally, during a recto-vaginal exam, the doctor can feel nodules or endometrial implants behind the uterus and along the ligaments that are attached to the pelvic wall. At other times, no nodules are felt, but the examination itself causes unusual pain or discomfort. A doctor may also suspect endometriosis from a woman's symptoms or from a pelvic exam. Laparoscopy is a short surgical procedure performed through a very tiny incision in the abdomen. A laparoscope, a pencil-thin instrument is inserted into the incision gives the physician a clear view of the inside of the abdominal cavity on a television monitor.

Endometriosis can also be cause of woman's infertility. It is estimated that 40 to 50 percent of infertile women may have endometriosis. Endometriosis may be related to infertility in several ways. It is possible that scar tissue from endometriosis can form around the ovary and restrict the available surface area of the ovary for egg release. Adhesions affecting the fallopian tubes may interfere with their ability to pick up an egg released by an ovary and transport it to the uterus. Occasionally, endometriosis will form inside the fallopian tube, resulting in blockage and making fertilization impossible. Women who experience deep pain during intercourse may choose to have intercourse less often, thus reducing the likelihood of becoming pregnant. In some women, endometriosis causes no symptoms or mild symptoms and does not need to be treated at all. However, untreated endometriosis can continue to worsen, so these women should continue to have regular examinations to monitor the condition. If endometriosis is causing symptoms or is interfering with a woman's ability to become pregnant, several treatment options are available like medication, surgery or hysterectomy. The precise cause of endometriosis is unknown. There are certain steps that a woman can take to help prevent endometriosis or keep it from becoming worse. A woman who experience abdominal pain especially before the start of her period should see her physician. A woman with reproductive organ problems that obstruct menstrual flow should consider surgery. Endometriosis is associated with infertility, therefore women at risk for endometriosis may want to have children before their late 30s. Still, early diagnosis offers the best chance of effective treatment so women can stop wondering and suffering from their fear of the unknown.

This article discusses the condition a lot of women are suffering, endometriosis which can also cause infertility. This article describes the condition, possible treatment and symptoms.

The Japanese Secret To Health and Longevity

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , , , ,

Arguably, the Japanese and Koreans, are way ahead of most western doctors on neutralization and flushing acid wastes from the body. Oriental doctors have had wonderful results and use alkaline water successfully for many ailments including reverse aging.

Scientist Sang Whang explains everything in his book "Reverse Aging" (a must read). He explains why the west is slow on this technology in that very little Japanese research is translated into English. In contrast much western research is translated into Japanese. He explains:

"Here is the simple process of aging. Every living cell within our body creates waste products. The nutrients from our food are delivered to each cell and they burn with oxygen to provide energy for us to live. The burned nutrients are the waste products. The food that is either good or bad for you is determined by the amount and quality of the wastes produced: toxic, acid, alkaline, etc. Most of our cells go through metabolism and old dead cells become waste products. "

"These waste products must be discharged from our body. In fact, our body tries its best to dispose of them through urine and perspiration. Virtually all waste products are acidic; that is why urine is acidic and skin surface is also acidic. The problem is that, due to several reasons, our body cannot get rid of 100% of the waste products it produces. "

"The main reason for this is our lifestyle. We stay up late and get up early. We do not take time to rest; some of us work more than one job. We, therefore, spend more time producing waste products than processing them. "

"The second reason is food. Most of the food we like is mainly acidic. Acidic food does not necessarily mean that it tastes acidic, but that the wastes produced are acidic. Grains and meats are mainly acidic; fruits and vegetables are alkaline. Citric fruits may taste acidic but they are considered to be alkaline because they contain alkaline minerals. "

"The third reason is our environment. More healthy cells are killed by pollutants in the air, water and soil than the natural deaths of cells caused by normal metabolism. Thus, more wastes products are created. "

"The question is: "What happens to those non-disposed acidic waste products?" The answer is simple. These waste products become solid wastes, such as, cholesterol, fatty acid, uric acid, kidney stones, urates, phosphates, sulfate etc., and unknown to us they accumulate and build up somewhere within our body. This accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes within the our body is the aging process. "

"Alkaline neutralizes acid. Drinking alkaline water helps our body dissolve acid wastes and makes it easier for the body to dispose of them safely since the accumulation of acid wastes is aging, the reduction of acid wastes is reverse aging. Alkaline water is not a medicine to cure any disease. However if consumed regularly, alkaline water gradually reduces the accumulated acid wastes. As a result of acid reduction, there are many reports of natural health improvement in Japan."

Ionization is simple and natural. The objective of an Ionizer is to duplicate the tumbling waters of mountain streams and waterfalls. This generates an electrical charge similar to electrolysis, which generates negative ions. These in turn create alkaline water. People drinking mountain alkaline water are known to have less disease and greater longevity. Negative ions allow inorganic minerals to be easily absorbed by the body. At the same time, quality Ionizers have an efficient, activated charcoal filter, which removes chlorine, bacteria, heavy metals and other pollutants from tap water, whilst retaining and concentrating beneficial minerals.

A daily intake of eight glasses of alkaline water helps your body combat free radicals and to neutralize and wash out acid wastes.

The sad story of the hysterical uterus

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

There has not been a scientifically definitive physiology of female anatomy until quite recently but strange images from its ambiguous history still haunt the common imagination and impact on women's self image. None is stranger than the female womb.

An anatomical "reality" that persisted in Western medical lore since ancient Greece was that the female uterus becomes displeased and displaced, and wanders through the body, negatively influencing the brain (I kid you not!). "Hysteria" is derived from the Greek word for uterus.

In a fit of fury the female uterus went travelling through the body, causing all manner of emotional disturbances – hence hysteria, hysterical – and hysterectomy.

The mental condition of hysteria afflicted legions of women of all ages throughout the patriarchal centuries, and was considered the most common disease after fever. In menopause, specifically, "the belief was that the failure to menstruate caused the uterus to travel around the body, eventually negatively influencing the brain".(Louis Banner In Full Flower)

The descriptions of hysterical patients painted a terrible caricature of the feminine. Old treatments included bed rest, binding, beating, purging, bloodletting, and, in worse cases, hysterectomy and/or clitoridectomy.

A kinder treatment evolved in the 19th century, when hysteria became a veritable epidemic, especially in the white middle classes. The doctor massaged the genitals until there was a healing convulsion and moist spasms (an orgasm by any other name), which relieved the patient for a while – until the next appointment. Hysteria was considered chronic and incurable, requiring ongoing treatment.

Electric vibrators were developed in the mid 19th century to help the overworked doctors and ease the hysterical women. They were even marketed to women at home for self-treatment, and were advertised in consumer catalogues and magazines. (There were vibrators in the house before vacuum cleaners.) However, by 1930 vibrators had gone underground, and were not openly advertised again until they re-emerged as sex toys in the 1960s. (This is according to Duana R Anderson in The wondering Uterus & A Brief History of the Vibrator)

The treatment of hysteria was taken over by psychology, and Freud pretty much evolved his world-shattering theories based on his work with hysterical (and frigid) women. And, well, we should be grateful for that.

He explained hysteria as the physical and psychological expression of inner psychic conflicts about sexuality. (Psyche turned into soma.) He explored his patients' personal history for clues, practised the talking cure (hugely innovative for its time), and developed psychoanalysis.

In my view, these legions of hysterical women were literally quivering with centuries of misogynist repressions, bursting to break out of the traumatized collective psyche; an epidemic erupting out of the universal unconscious where the goddess of myth lay buried.

In the good doctor's own words, "The character of hysterics shows a degree of sexual repression in excess of the normal quantity, an intensification of resistance against the sexual instinct (which we have already met with in the form of shame, disgust and morality), and what seems like an instinctive aversion on their part to any intellectual consideration of sexual problems.

"This trait … is not uncommonly screened by the existence of a second constitutional character present in hysteria, namely the predominant development of the sexual instinct. Psychoanalysis … reveals the pair of opposites by which it is characterised – exaggerated sexual craving and excessive aversion to sexuality."

Modern psychology succeeded in shifting hysteria from the realm of superstition. You could say it cured the mass hysteria; by 1952, it was officially declared a non-disease.

Freud introduced the concept of libido, the psychic energy expressed through sexuality that lies at the root of every living individual, and drives our desires and impulses. It can be repressed, expressed, controlled, or transmuted. But it exists – a priori!

Psychology helped to make conscious the compulsion of instincts hidden in the unconscious psyche. Basically ordinary people could now understand their behaviours and symptoms as expressions of underlying psychic/psychological conflict. Jung introduced the idea of the collective unconscious, which illuminated the universality of dream images and personal unconscious content.

The hysteric's subjugated sexuality was now the very stuff of the modern age, just waiting for the 1960s to burst out on to the world stage of the post-war baby boomers. The sexual liberation of that period was a huge and abrupt cultural change. Perhaps we forget now just how radical and fundamental it was - this sexual break from the past.

However, before we get too satisfied with this development, we need to ask ourselves why, with hysteria safely unplugged, we now have a virtual epidemic of hysterectomies, now the second most frequent surgery among American women, with caesarean section delivery being first. One in three women in the United States has had a hysterectomy by age 60!

If our hysterical uteruses are no longer travelling through our bodies affecting our brains, why are so many women having them cut out?

What Are The Root Causes Of Procrastination?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by MJ Thompson

There are many causes of procrastination but the main two seem to be either psychological or physiological problems that a person is suffering from. Below we will look a little more closely at these two causes and some others as well.

1 Generally speaking Psychological reasons can vary greatly but is is usually possible to categorize them as follows:-

Anxiety, low self worth and a self defeating mentality. If you are faced with a task that needs to be completed some groups of people will fret over it. Others who suffer from low self worth will feel that they are not to complete the task due to lack of ability. The final group of people will believe that they will fail at the task even before they start.

Many people when faced with the task will dramatically over estimate the amount of work required to complete the task and this can very soon become a habit. Breaking a procrastination habit can be very difficult

2. Physiological. The causes of this type of procrastination seem to surround the role that the prefrontal cortex of the brain plays in a person's life. It is this area of the brain which controls our executive brain functions such as planning, the control of a person's impulses, their attention span or lack of it and is also there to help filter out those distractions which might otherwise stimulate the brain.

Physiological Reasons for procrastination can be caused by damage to this are of the brain. A lower than normal level of activation may also lead to physiological procrastination. A classic symptom of this kind of procrastination is the inability to filter out distractions and a distinct lack of organisation.

Others may procrastinate as they feel the work involved is too complicated and so the only way that a person can really deal with such a situation is as follows. They need to divide the task in hand up into smaller pieces and then perform each part one at a time, but they must provide themselves with a deadline for when they need to complete it by.

As you can see there are many causes of procrastination and it is wise to speak with either your doctor, therapist or psychiatrist in order to find out just what the underlying problem is. Sometimes procrastination can be cured by just reprogramming your subconscious that's where products like procrastination blaster come in

Malaria symptoms - treatment and prevention.

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

In this article the aim is to point out the various things you should know about Malaria. You will learn what the Malaria symptoms are, should you think you’ve been bitten, and what treatment and prevention methods are normally advised.

If you’re going on holiday or if you’re going to be working in malarial areas most travel companies and Doctors will advise what sort of precaution and prevention you will need. Some of preventive drugs can have side affects but it will be certainly worth the risk rather than catching Malaria, and the most frightening thing for most people is that it can take a week before any Malaria symptoms can be detected.

In normal circumstances it’s the female mosquito of the Anopheles species that bites someone and then passes on a parasite by the name of Plasmodium. Once this parasite is inside of you it travels in your blood till it reaches the liver, and from there it will enter the blood stream again where it attacks the red blood cells that feed oxygen around our bodies.

Many of the diseases that affect the human body today are bad if not terrible. The last two decades have seen a lot of publicity about Aids with television coverage, and pop concerts yet Malaria goes by without a mention. Each year it is estimated that over 600 million people and children will suffer from Malaria, and at a guess the death rate is something up to 3 million. This figure cannot be accurate as many people that suffer will never even see a Doctor as they live out in poor communities far away from medical help.

For prevention you must get the most up to date information from your Doctor who will advise what precaution as far as different vaccines. You must also make sure you have the right sort of netting for your bedding, and be sure to have some form of replant.

The main malaria symptoms are as follows and this is bearing in mind that you have been bitten by the Anopheles species. Headaches, nausea, fever, vomiting and flu like symptoms. If you do suspect that you have been bitten be sure to seek medical help.

Home Testing For Blood In Urine

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

Also called hematuria, blood in the urine is a symptom associated with many urinary tract health problems; the presence of the red cells is easy to recognize and it usually creates the impression of a very severe disease. This is not always the case; however, the best way to find out is to perform some medical tests: you can either go to a clinic or collect a sample urine with the help of a home health test kit and send it to a laboratory. More and more people prefer the second variant because of the accessibility of the service and the cost difference.

There are often cases when blood in urine is not even visible; many people who have sent their samples to the laboratory to investigate other symptoms where surprised to learn about it. The more advanced stage is when urine gets a reddish or brownish color, which often seems highly alarming on discovery. Even more surprising may seem the fact that blood in urine is a normal condition that doesn't necessarily indicate a health problem. Around a million red cells are eliminated via the urinary tract every day; but the condition is far from being considered clinical.

Microscopic hematuria indicates an affection at the level of the superior urinary tract, usually the kidneys; whereas the intense or acute hematuria is specific to the lower part of the tract. It is good to know that some forms of antibiotics have blood in urine as a common side effect, so in case you perform a home test, make sure you include details on any medical treatment you've been on. Hematuria is more common with people over forty; however, it frequently appears at younger ages since it is usually triggered by basic infections of the urinary tract.

Home health test kits for urine sample collection come together with pH observation shits that you should also seriously consider; they must be completed in order for the laboratory to perform an accurate and comprehensive test. Since blood in the urine may be caused by kidney stones, urinary tract infections, small injuries at the organs or severe conditions such as cancer, a medical history record is also a must. Mention whether you've had any urinary tract infections before, sand or stones, urinary or prostrate problems and so on. All this information is just as important as the urine sample you send.

Curing Your Urinary Tract Infections Or UTI Naturally

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Urinary tract infections or UTI are very common. Women are more susceptible to getting an infection because they have a shorter urethra than men and can get bacteria into the urinary tract more easily. But in men UTI can also lead to a prostate infection. This is more difficult to cure and you will definitely need to get your doctor involved if this happens as it is difficult to cure a prostate infection with antibiotics as many of them do not penetrate the infected prostate tissue.

Whenever you suspect a urinary tract infection you need to deal with it as quickly as possible. As seen above, it can turn into a prostate infection or it can also migrate up into the kidneys causing a kidney infection which is much more dangerous than a urinary tract infection.

The most common cause of UTI is when bacteria from the rectum or the vagina enters the urinary tract through the urethra. Once this bacteria enters into the urethra it travels upward into the bladder or other parts of the urinary tract causing an infection. Waiting too long before urinating can also cause bladder infections. The bladder can be stretched too far and over time will weaken the bladder muscle causing the bladder to retain and not empty out completely. Some of the urine is then left in the bladder and may be a risk in causing urinary tract infection or bladder infection.

Symptoms of urinary tract infections are:

An urge to urinate that cannot be delayed

A sharp pain or burning sensation in the urethra when urinating

Urgency with very little urine released

Urine may have blood in it

Pain in the lower abdomen or back

If you have a kidney infection instead, you may experience back pain, chills, fever, nausea and vomiting as well as the UTI symptoms.

How to treat urinary tract infection using natural remedies:

1. The number one rule in treating UTI is to drink lots of water. This will help flush the bacteria out of your bladder and urinary tract.

2. Avoid eating dairy products and chocolate. You should also avoid spicy foods, carbonated drinks, alcohol and coffee.

3. D-mannose, a simple sugar and similar to glucose, cures UTI about 90 percent of the time in only one to two days. It is a little expensive but convenient to use.

4. Cranberry juice is an old staple in curing urinary tract infection. It is probably the most well known remedy. When using cranberry juice be sure to get 100% unsweetened cranberry juice. One way to deal with the tartness is to dilute the juice in water as you need to drink a lot of water anyway.

These natural remedies should resolve your problem. If they don't, you should seek help from your medical care provider.

Colloidal Silver And The Healing Crisis

ป้ายกำกับ:

By Peter Salazar

Though generally known for the great antibiotic properties, colloidal silver also has great cleansing effects at the level of the internal organs. Many therapists recommend colloidal silver for intensive detoxification programs, particularly when the health condition is seriously affected by the over-accumulation of toxins and heavy metals. Colloidal silver administered for prevention of disease is usually taken in small quantities on a daily basis. As such, the product can be used for an indefinite period of time without any risks at all. Yet, when a disease is already affecting the body system, a higher dosage of colloidal silver is recommended and the intake may often trigger a whole range of symptoms.

At the beginning of any detoxification process, a higher stress is placed on the internal organs that make efforts to eliminate the harmful substances from the body. The most sensitive are the liver, the kidneys and the spleen as they are usually the ones clogged with impurities and chemicals taken from food, water or air. Colloidal silver accumulates in the cells and starts a process of metabolic acceleration and elimination of residues. The process doesn’t go unnoticed as many patients intensely experience the healing crisis.

The elimination of viruses, bacteria or fungi by the action of colloidal silver can be similarly strenuous for the body system; the internal organs become over-burdened and you may experience a variety of flu-like symptoms. Tiredness, dizziness, headaches, sweating, dry mouth, diarrhea and even fever may be associated with the healing crisis. You can assist the body by drinking lots of water, at least two liters per day, and supplementing the intake of C vitamin during the colloidal silver treatment. It is ideal to have fresh grapefruit and lemon juice included in your regular diet.

If you consult a homeopathic practitioner and he or she prescribes you a higher amount of colloidal silver than the normal maintenance dosage, you should be careful with the supplementary recommendations you also need. When taken in larger amounts so as to effectively and rapidly eliminate an infection, besides the acute healing crisis you may experience side effects as the ones triggered by antibiotics. The intestinal flora may be damaged and the first symptom is diarrhea; this can be easily mistaken for the healing crisis, however, it is essential that you increase the probiotic food during the treatment. Eat fresh yogurt that contains live bacterial cultures or take acidophilus supplements.

An Introduction to Polarized lenses

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Polarized lenses are made used in sunglasses to decrease glare from corresponding reflective surface such as the surface of a lake or a lid of a car. They normally achieve this feat through a process known as polarization, more like Venetian blind controls sunlight through a window.

Sunlight itself is not polarized; it would either be absorbed or reflected horizontally, diagonally or vertically. The problem causes for fishermen and drivers lies in the horizontal reflectivity. Sunlight pouring off a horizontal surface would strike the viewer’s eyes at the same angle. This simply means the glare from surface of the water or the road or the car lid would be strong. Polarized sun glasses have a laminated surface containing vertical stripes. These stripes only permit vertically polarized light to enter the wearer’s eyes. Glare is removed as the horizontally polarized light wave can not go around the polarized filter.

Polarized lenses or Polarized fishing glasses do not offer universal protection from glare, any how. If the wearer tilts his head past 45 degrees or so, some of the horizontal light could enter and as well cause some bright spots. Some wearers who use polarized safety glasses or polarized lenses in snowy area might find that they lose some contrast among snow and shadows. Fishermen and drivers appear to derive the most benefit from polarized lenses as they deal with most horizontally surfaces. A fisherman using polarized sunglasses could see below the surface of the water to look for schools of fish or out of sight obstacles. Drivers are no longer affected by a steady reflection of light from their lids or the road ahead

There are as well some restricted to use of polarized lenses, any how. As vertical polarizing stripes decrease the amount of light coming on to the eye, polarized lenses should be used for regular eyewear with clear lenses. Prescription sunglasses could be tinted a extremely light gray to lodge in the polarized cover, but most contact lenses cannot. Some driver states that polarized lenses could result in distortions liquid crystal displays (LCD).

Both horizontally and vertically polarized lenses are usually used to look at the three-dimensional movies. Some of the light reflected from the movie screen is vertically polarized that simply means only a lens with a same vertical laminate would receive it. The other lens only gets horizontal light waves. Your brain takes both of these images and combines them to make a realistic sense of depth.

Gymnema - Helpful In Diabetes Treatment

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Gurmar is a common name of Gymnema sylvestre, meaning 'sugar destroyer'. Studies show that Gymnema sylvestre not only reduces the taste of sweetness, but also reduces sugar absorption from the gut into the body.

Gymnema also appears to stimulate the production of insulin by the pancreas. Studies have shown these benefits could help extend life. For example, see: Srivastava Y, et al. Hypoglycemic and Life-prolonging Properties of Gymnema sylvestre Leaf Extract in Diabetic Rats. Isr J Med Sci. Jun1985;21(6):540-42.

Gymnema Sylvestre And Diabetes

Anything which can help the body to produce more of its own insulin is to be welcomed. In studies, Gymnema has been identified as a herb which can certainly assist in the management of diabetes.

Gymnema has several properties which lends it to helping blood sugar management. It:

  • Reduces sugar absorbed from food in the intestines
  • Stimulates insulin production
  • It appears to build pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin
  • Finally, taking Gymnema drops on the tongue dulls the sense of taste for sweet foods.

Some benefits from Gymnema have been reported for Type 1 diabetes, but most research has been done on Type 2 diabetes - the 'maturity onset' type.

For example, in a study lead by K Baskaran in 1990, Gymnema sylvestre was given to 22 patients with Type 2 diabetes for 18 months to supplement their anti-diabetic medication. Most patients showed a distinct reduction of blood sugar levels by several measures. In addition, 5 of the 22 were able to discontinue their conventional drugs altogether! The inference was made that Gymnema appeared to be regenerating or repairing the pancreatic beta cells which produce insulin. Support for this view was drawn from the fact that blood insulin levels rose after Gymnema supplementation.

K, Kizar-Ahamath B, Shanmugasundaram MR, Shanmugasundaram ERB. Antidiabetic effect of leaf extract from Gymnema sylvestre in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients. Journal of Ethnopharmacology. 1990;30(3):295-300.

Healthnotes, a reliable science based herbal assessment website says of Gymnema sylvestre:

"Gymnema sylvestre has been used in India for the treatment of diabetes for over 2,000 years.... The hypoglycaemic (blood sugar-lowering) action of gymnema sylvestre leaves was first documented in the late 1920s. This action is attributed to members of a family of substances called gymnemic acids. Gymnema sylvestre leaves raise insulin levels, according to research in healthy volunteers."

Gymnema is a remarkable herb which can be a huge benefit both to those who truly want to cut down their consumption of sweet foods and those with blood sugar issues. Of course, if on medication you should consult your doctor before taking Gymnema: but if you have 'blood sugar lows' and are not on medication, try Gymnema.

The main treatment for low blood sugar involves a change of diet and getting more exercise: but if you do these things, Gymnema drops are a great help to have in your pocket, and Gymnema capsules can be taken 3 times a day.

Max Hill loves sharing the knowledge he has gained about natural healing after more than 20 years. For example, on the website about Metabolic Syndrome he has been a key contributor to the extensive information there about Gymnema Sylvestre as well as recommending other important aids for digestion/pancreativ health including the 90-day Digestive Programme . There is additional information on these sites about diet, exercise and all aspects of detox. Take a look today - and get the benefit of Max's valuable knowledge and experience.

Gender Mainstreaming: Mainspring Of AIDS Prevention

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Gender Mainstreaming: Mainspring Of AIDS Prevention
Anirudha Alam

With a view to attaining gender equality, gender mainstreaming plays a vital role as an effective strategy for making both women's and men's participation, sharing and experience integral dimension in policy making, program implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Mainstreaming the gender perspective, it is easy to bring about the process for stimulating the gender awareness being internalized in any planned action in any area of development and at all levels. Since HIV/AIDS is not just a health issue and impacting widely on every aspect of life, it should be prevented through developing both short and long-term gender-sensitive strategies from community to national level.

According to the 2005 national HIV household survey, one in three women aged 30-34 years were living with HIV, as were one in four men aged 30-39 years in South Africa. Present average life expectancy (at birth) for women in Zimbabwe is now among the lowest in the world: 34 years. It is estimated to be 37 years for men (WHO, 2006). So it is significant to note that to combat HIV/AIDS epidemic, we have to ensure women empowerment stamping out gender discrimination through gender mainstreaming at any rate.

Prostitution has been mushrooming in Asia due to deteriorating economic condition in this region. Young girls and women having lack of educational and economic opportunities are being driven to the big cities in the hope of earning their livelihood. Sometimes they are involved in such risky behaviors as prostituting themselves being trapped. They are lured into the job by the offer of attractive salary that they are engaged into sex industry by men whom they trust. So HIV/AIDS prevention program internalized by gender mainstreaming should be through a framework integrating social mobilization, social sensitization activities like advocacy, livelihood skill development training and creating the scope for self employment, providing necessary assistance to indigenous group, ensuring legal as well as financial assistance.

Gender mainstreaming, very much efficient and equitable way of using existing resources for containing the spread of HIV/AIDS, may make different development endeavors focus properly on the pragmatic needs of the whole population of a nation. It ensures a framework for developing and implementing policies, programs and legislation as the corner stone of sustainable development. Involving gender analysis, the framework assists to reveal, classify and integrate women's and men's different social contribution, relationships, commitment, realities and economic circumstances.

As per the findings of an in-depth research entitled 'Stepping Stone to AIDS Prevention in Bangladesh through Gender Mainstreaming' conducted by Earth Foundation, "Women should be empowered by way of income generating activities. After being self-reliant, they will be capable to fight for their rights coupled with ensuring their participation in development activities. Consequently malnutrition, maternal mortality rate, infant mortality rate and overall the vulnerability to STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and AIDS will be reduced significantly."

Rainbow Nari O Shishu Kallyan Foundation's reveal extremely high levels of infections among adolescent girls, which are higher than those for boys. This is mainly because of the fact that at young age, boys have sex with girls of similar age, while girls have relations with older men, who are more likely to be infected. Sexual harassment of schoolgirls by older men sometime may be the cause of HIV or STI infection. Poverty also drives many adolescent girls to accept relationships with 'sugar daddies' (older men who are prepared to give money, goods or favors in return for sex).

Guiding, designing and implementing the process of mainstreaming gender into all areas of action research, gender management system (GMS) always intends to widen the incorporation of gender awareness into all organizational policies, programs and projects sapping the impact of HIV/AIDS. In accordance with the spirit and principles of broad-based community approach, gender-inclusive environment is automatically groomed to enrich the ability of community based interventions to direct and coordinate gender mainstreaming efforts in the area of HIV/AIDS.

It is hoped that advancing the goal of gender equality and equity in addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic from a multi-sectoral perspective comes in to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS fruitfully. If women and girls have adequate access to sexual and reproductive health services they would be stirred up to adopt healthier sexual behavior. Women and girls need information and education, skills, access to technologies, economic resources, social capital as well as the opportunity. As a result they have a voice in decision-making at all levels as a whole.

Atkins for Dieting

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Li Ming Wong

Most people around the world by now have heard of the Atkins diet. It has been one of the most highly touted and highly controversial diets of our time. Those who love it have nothing but great things to say about it but those who are critical are not shy about their opposition either. The largest criticism when it comes to the Atkins, or low carb diet would be the near absence of whole grains, which are considered the cornerstone to a healthy diet by many.

Dieting with the Atkins diet involved eliminating a large degree of carbohydrates from your diet. In the past there hasn't been as much of an emphasis on fitness and exercise with the Atkins diet as there seems to be currently. This is good news however as an active fitness regime is as essential to successful weight loss as cutting calories and in this case cutting carbohydrates.

You should take great caution that you are getting accurate information when it comes to Atkins dieting if this is something you are considering in order to meet your fitness and weight loss needs. There is a great deal of misleading and incorrect information that is floating around out there when it comes to the Atkins diet and weight loss plan. First of all, weight loss is the direct result of burning more calories than you consume. It doesn't matter how many or how few carbs you enjoy or deny yourself during the day if at the end of the day you've consumed a few thousand calories too many.

The notion that you can eat anything you want during the day as long as there are no carbs is simply incorrect. Calories still put on the pounds whether you are using the Atkins plan for weight loss or not. That being said there are some interesting insights in this diet and a good man of the foods that are eliminated are those that have the most complex sugars for the body to dispose of. For this reason there are many who have followed the honest to goodness plan to tremendous results.

If you are considering dieting with the Atkins plan you should realize that this is a lifelong commitment in order to achieve the maximum benefit of the plan. There will be lesser restrictions as you reach the maintenance phases of the plans but you are making a conscious decision to pretty much sacrifice a good deal of the carbohydrates that many of us have enjoyed throughout our lives. This is a concept that is much easier said than done over an extended period of time and especially in a society when most of us cannot commit to a mate for that long.

At any rate, dieting with the Atkins plan has produced results for a good deal of people around the world. The news of these results has made it one of the most talked about, tested, and tried systems for dieting on the planet and many people have mixed reviews. Those who love it and feel that it is effective are enthusiastic in its support though those that are honest will admit that you do feel as though you are sacrificing a good deal for the sake of your dietary needs. Those who hate it hate it, and there is nothing that is going to change their opinion. The only way to know for sure is to try for yourself.

The most effective and healthy ways to reduce ailments that afflict our lungs, body and skin

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by Isabella Samovsky

As we are increasingly exposed to pollutants in the air that we breathe and the water that we bathe in, it makes sense that respiratory and skin problems are on the rise. These health issues take the form of asthma, no seasonal allergies, breathing difficulties, skin rashes, and countless other modern maladies.

Medical researchers are still discovering new ways in which humans are adversely affected by airborne and waterborne pollutants. Some people assume that what they eat and drink are the primary ways in which their environment can affect their health. But actually your skin and your lungs are your main interface to the outside world. In fact, your skin is your body's largest organ, and it plays a crucial role in regulating your body's temperature, and keeping the outside... outside! Your lungs and skin can easily absorb toxins for which they were never intended.

The most effective and healthy ways to reduce or completely eliminate these ailments that afflict our lungs and skin.

Conventional Western medicine typically turns to prescription drugs, to try to cure the problems or mask the symptoms. But these unnatural chemicals often do more harm than good. Consequently, people interested in more natural solutions are getting terrific results from speleotherapy and halo therapy.

Speleotherapy is essentially the treatment of respiratory diseases using the air found in underground caves. Such air is typically rich in natural salt microns and ions, which have been found quite effective in reducing asthma, allergies, and other breathing problems, in addition to soothing irritated skin and restoring ionic balance within the body.

Speleotherapy is most popular in former Soviet bloc areas -- such as East Germany, Romania, Armenia, and the Ukraine -- for several reasons. Initially, Eastern European health practitioners and medical clinics did not have the financial resources for purchasing expensive Western pharmaceuticals, and so they turned to more traditional and lower-cost methods, including speleotherapy. The mountainous regions of Europe and Asia are well-known as having the best mines for ancient salt, as well as being the primary sources for crystal salts. These natural crystals -- formed countless millennia ago -- are also handcrafted into beautiful salt lamps that give off healthy negative ions, which have unique healing properties.

Who uses Speleotherapy and the results

There are numerous medical modalities used by speleotherapy practitioners. For example, at the world-renowned Ukrainian Allergologic Hospital (UAH) located in the foothills of the Ukrainian Carpathian mountains, three major types of treatment are offered: the healthy microclimate deep in their salt mines, water from those salt mines, and brine and mud from a nearby salt lake. UAH utilizes speleotherapy to treat patients with bronchial asthma, psoriasis, neurodermitis, allergic dermatitis, post-burn conditions, nervous system dysfunction, sex disorders, and chronic nonspecific lung diseases (CNLD). During more than 30 years, an estimated 60,000 patients are reported to have been cured of their maladies.

As a result of people all over the world learning the benefits of speleotherapy, clinics outside of Eastern Europe are simulating the deep cave microenvironments, offering halotherapy (HT) in specially constructed rooms, halochambers, whose surfaces are coated with medicinal salt. Natural ionization of the air is supplemented with a dry sodium chloride aerosol, to maximize the health potential of the treatment while the patient is there. Halo therapy clinics have the advantage that they are more accessible to people living outside of Eastern Europe. Yet patients only get exposure to the healthy ions while they are at the clinic, which might be for only a few days or weeks per year.

The most cost-effective solution by far is to create your own mini-halotherapy environment in your own home and/or office.

Thus you derive the health benefits of this remarkable therapy, every day that you choose, without having to travel anywhere. Many experts consider one device, the Salin Device to be the best air purifier/salinizer, partly because it is so effective at creating a halotherapy micro-environment, and also because it is quiet and well-made. In fact, Canada considers the Salin Device to be a Medical Device Class I, just as various clinical studies have demonstrated its value in alleviating respiratory diseases. Even more portable is the Salt Pipe, which is made of ceramic porcelain, and whose daily use helps to flush away impurities from the nasal passages, as well as helping to heal and calm inflamed lungs and airways. Salt pipes are now quite popular in Europe, and can be used by anyone anywhere. The final touches, beautiful glowing salt lamps from the Himalayas, Poland and Persia .

Now Lasers Can Detect Invisible Tooth Decay

ป้ายกำกับ:

ePR Source

We would all like to stop tooth decay before it affects the whiteness of our smile, and especially before it leads to painful cavities that may have to be drilled out. The problem is that dentists are only human and can only see with human eyes. Their eyes are trained, but by the time a dentist can see caries (tooth decay), so can anyone else, and by the time they can see the caries, the damage has already been done. Even worse, as surface dental health has improved through the fluoridation of water, caries has begun to appear below the surface where no one can see it until it is too late.

Until now, the only tool available to dentists to detect sub-surface caries was exploratory drilling. And who wants more drilling, especially in teeth that might be healthy?

But now a new solution is available. DIAGNOdent laser caries detection aid that can see safely through the enamel to detect caries that are too small or too deep for dentists using more traditional methods.

DIAGNOdent is more effective than traditional detection methods

We have all suffered under the dentists pick. The grating metal against our enamel, the scraping, the (sometimes painful) probing. No one likes it, but we suffer through it because we assume that it allows the dentist to find all those caries that need to be treated to keep our teeth healthy, bright, and functional. What if you were told that a study showed dentists using the pick were only able to find caries 58% of the time? That means that if it were a test, dentists would get, at best, a D- in finding cavities.

What about x-rays? You remember biting down on that obnoxious plastic film while the dentist puts a led apron on you and then hides in the other room. With all that discomfort and radiation exposure, it must do a better job of finding caries. Yes, but not much. The same study showed that the x-ray bitewing only detected 67% of the caries: a C-.

But dont you deserve A-level caries detection? Of course. And only one method allows that level of detection: DIAGNOdent. DIAGNOdent has proven 90% effective in finding dental fissures.

DIAGNOdent has none of the drawbacks of traditional methods

Not only is DIAGNOdent more effective than traditional detection methods, but think of all the unpleasantness associated with the dentist that you can do without:

  • NO scratching or probing with the pick
  • NO x-ray exposure or uncomfortable bitewing
And most of all:
  • NO exploratory drilling.
And even without all these painful nuisances, youll be getting unprecedented accuracy in the diagnosis of present and possible future caries.

Additional Benefits of DIAGNOdent

In addition to these appreciable benefits over traditional detection methods, DIAGNOdent allows numerous other, previously unanticipated benefits:

  • Allows the use of minimally invasive treatments without unnecessary procedures by ensuring an accurate diagnosis of even hidden caries. Ideal for use with air abrasion and micro-rotary treatments.
  • Allows dentists to track the development of caries over time to immediately identify problems to possibly isolate and remedy causes.
  • Results are completely reproducible and documentable.
  • Increased confidence and comfort mean you wont dread returning to the dentist and can stop any problems before they get out of hand.

Natural ways to increase testosterone

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Dr.Savitha Suri

Testosterone hormone is produced by testicles in men. It is responsible for development of male sexual characters like physical strength, muscle mass, body shape, body hair, deep voice, sexual function etc. Erectile dysfunction occurs when testosterone level is reduced. But this is not the only cause for erectile dysfunction.

Causes for low testosterone levels:

Age: The testosterone level in blood start reducing as age advances .Usually it starts between 35 to 45 years of age. Irrespective of age the andropause in men sets in as the testosterone level starts dipping.

Injury to testicles: Testicles are prone to injury as they are suspended outside the abdomen. Injury to both testicles can reduce testosterone production

Infection of testicles: If mumps infection during adolescence or early adult hood involves testicles it may affect testosterone production

Cancer treatments: The treatments for cancers like chemotherapy or radiation therapy may temporarily cause reduction of testosterone levels. But some times it may become permanent.

Diseases : Chronic kidney related diseases, Cirrhosis of liver, Sarcoidosis, chronic illness etc can also cause low testosterone levels .

Medications: Corticosteroid medications and medicines used to treat prostate cancer can cause lowered testosterone level.

Apart from the above mentioned reasons alcoholism, stress, insufficient exercise, obesity and a poor diet which is not rich in nutrients can also cause lowered testosterone levels.

Symptoms of lowered testosterone levels

* Erectile dysfunction
* Obesity
* Osteoporosis
* Infertility
* Low sexual drive
* Fatigue or weakness
* Enlarged male breasts
* Decreased body hair
* Loss of muscle mass
* Depression
* Loss of concentration.
* Mild anemia

Simple natural ways to increase testosterone level

* Increased weight or obesity leads to increased estrogen levels. Increased estrogen lowers testosterone level. Hence try to shed excess fat. Do not fast or skip meals to shred excess fat. Once again poor eating habit reduces testosterone level. Losing 2kgs of weight per month is always ideal.

* Do not take a diet which is very high in protein. Reduce carbohydrates, sugar and oil content in daily diet.
* Regular eating habit prevents frequent fluctuation of hormonal level.
* Exercise regularly.
* Perform sex frequently specially in morning. Frequent sex reduces weight and increases testosterone levels.
* Eat pea nuts, pea nut butter and olive oil.
* Reduce alcohol intake
* Relax and try to distress. Yoga and meditation help to reduce stress level.

How Potable Music player can pose risk to your health
Music and other loud noises earring loss by damaging the ear cells in the cochlea, which is a part of your inner ear that helps, transmit sound information to your brain. Theses hair cells can often recover from temporary damage. If you have ever been to a rock concert and your hearing sounded muffled for the next day or two, you have experienced temporary damage to those hair cells. But, extremely loud noise, such as a gunshot, or moderately loud noise that continues for long periods of time, can permanently damage these hair cells. Once these hairs are destroyed, they don't come back and, at least, partial hearing loss occurs. Any sound above 90 decibels (db) may cause some hearing loss if the exposure is prolonged. But, must portable music players can produce sounds up to 120 db. That's louder than a lawn mower or a chain saw and equivalent to an ambulance siren. The problem is that you don't feel hearing loss occurring. You won't know until years later that some of your hearing has been permanently destroyed.

Here are some Warning Signs
1. A blocked feeling in the ears.
2. Having to ask people to repeat what they said to you.
3. You also have to turn up the volume on the TV set when those around you can hear the sound emitted from the TV set speakers.
4. You can't hear conversations happening around you.
5. Hearing ringing in your ears.

How to Know your music ear peace is loud
1. While you can't measure the decibel level of your music, there are some simple ways to know if the volume of your potable music player is high. Your music is high.
2. You find your self shouting instead if talking when you respond to people near you ( friend or family members)
3. The volume is set higher than 70% -80% of the volume and you can't hear conversations going on around you.

What Is GERD Diet?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is sometimes referred to as acid reflux. The symptoms that a person suffers from with this disease can be very wide ranging as well as being extremely annoying. But if a person suffering from this disease wishes to alleviate these symptoms then they will need to make changes to their lifestyle and also start using a GERD diet.

Normally making changes to your lifestyle may seem a little daunting but certainly by alleviating some of the stresses and strains that you feel during the course of a day will help to improve your situation immensely. Also you need to start looking at the kind of foods you are eating and making changes to your diet which can then prevent the acid reflux from becoming worse.

However when it comes to making changes to your diet in order to alleviate the symptoms of this disease it does not mean that you have to give up those that you really enjoy. Instead what you need to do is find out about those foods which are causing the symptoms and then just start to reduce the amount of them that you consume. You do not need to eliminate them entirely from your diet as just by reducing the amount that you eat will go a long way to helping you to deal with acid reflux.

Also by creating a GERD diet, you are helping to strengthen the muscles that are to be found at the bottom of your throat and which will in turn help to prevent the acid reflux occurring. The muscles at the bottom of your throat allow food that you have eaten to gain entry into your stomach. They open as the food passes down your throat and will close once all food has entered the stomach. When you have acid reflux, these muscles have become too wide and so they are unable to close properly once the food has passed through.

When it comes to you designing a GERD diet in order to help alleviate the symptoms of this particular disease and to help strengthen up the muscles at the base of your throat you should first consider eliminating such foods as chocolate, fried foods, caffeinated drinks, whole milk and those foods and drinks which contain large amounts of citrus in them. Instead you should increase the amount of fat free milk as well as fish both of which can help to alleviate acid reflux.

Ricky Lim highly recommend herbal acid reflux treatment for your acid reflux problems especially for infants and young children. Visit his site at http://www.herbalacidreflux.com for more acid reflux information.

Osteoporosis symptoms

ป้ายกำกับ:

By: Ivan Hince

In this article I would like to cover the subject of Osteoporosis symptoms, and what to look out for and at what age.

With most people you’re never too young to think about what causes Osteoporosis as it can affect young people as well as the old. In most cases it tends to affect women more than men as this is down to the hormonal change during the menopause.

But on saying that the Osteoporosis symptoms can occur at any age especially if the person’s diet is not as it should be. An example of this and hopefully your not in this category is that of anorexics who tend to have very little meat on their bones, and have not had the right intake of vitamins and normal supplements.

Osteoporosis symptoms are usually very hard to detect and in most cases the first you will know about whether you have Osteoporosis or not is when you end up in hospital due to a broken or fractured bone.

Another group of people who are at risk are those who exercise to the point they are thin or have very little body fat. Many a marathon runner has suffered with brittle bones due to their way of life.

Having Osteoporosis symptoms means that your bones will become very brittle and that without to much effort your bones will break or fracture. A simple fall or a knock can break things like your leg bones, hip bones, and wrist bones.

There are many ways that you can combat Osteoporosis and most of them are with taking a proper diet. If you’re a woman of menopausal age try taking the extra vitamins to replace those lost due to your time of life. If you talk this over with your Doctor I’m sure he will suggest the right type of supplements you need.

Summing up can be simplified, and affective Osteoporosis treatment can be made by first taking care of your diet and make sure that it is mainly on the alkaline side rather than the acidic. Many articles and books are available on this subject and it’s never too late in life to make that effective change to keep away the problems concerned with Osteoporosis.

Defeat Cancer Scare with Early Detection Testing

ป้ายกำกับ:

By: Lena Butler

Cancer scare is a popular term today to describe an individual or a society’s worry over cancer and its effects. In an age of fast-paced lifestyle where information flows at a high speed, wrong information and advice can get to us that can lead us to a panic binge. However, if you are equipped with the right information and education, cancer scares should not be a distraction for you.

Cancer scare usually happens when a seemingly healthy individual trying to live a fast-paced life suddenly discovers that he is not healthy after all. Despite the lack of symptoms and the fact that he can engage in stressful and dynamic activities in the workplace and at home, cancer can silently knock at your health without your awareness. Before you know it, your cancer has advanced to a stage where it would be too late to treat.

Cancer patients are not prepared against the sudden change of lifestyle that involves undergoing treatment, monitoring daily activities, and constant feeling of uncertainty about their health and their outlook. All of these revolve into something that can be too overwhelming to a cancer patient. Just like any other scare, it can result into irrational decisions and thoughts that could do more harm in cases where they could just have stayed calm.

However, the feeling of being powerless and ignorant on these diseases can be replaced by the ability to control and defeat cancer. There is nothing harmful with being prepared. Cancer scares should not happen if you undergo constant early detection testing.

Early detection testing is the first line of defense against cancer scares. These tests help you fight off the effects of an advancing cancer. Cancer patients who have detected their tumors early will have more treatment options so they are not force to make sudden decisions. The earlier you detect your cancer, the better chance that you will have more choices for treatment.

If cancer is detected earlier, a small tumor can be treated with a very high survival rate and positive outlook for the patient. Despite the lack of symptoms suggesting that you may have cancer, early detection testing softens the blow as it gives you the education and information before your cancer has reached an advanced stage. The less surprised you are, the more you can be prepared to defeat the disease.

Early detection testing has gained importance in a world of health scares. If you feel that you may be at risk for a certain cancer due to age or family history, talk to your doctor so that he can help you understand what cancer and its risks is all about. Then start considering what early detection tests you need to undergo. It is important to talk to your doctor even when you do not feel any symptoms that will lead to cancer. Regular checkups and discussions with your doctor will give you the perspective that you need to prepare yourself for such an event. Early detection testing is a non-invasive process that would make you feel comfortable and ready to face anything that comes at you. As long as you get yourself screened and tested, there is no reason to panic over a disease that we can beat.

Mysterious Itch Mites

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By Leo Malantis

A microscopic mite, Pyemotes herfsi -- aptly called an "itch mite"-- is responsible for the mysterious, itchy red bites recently reported by a number of Midwest state residents.

The microscopic itch mites prey on small fly maggots which cause "leaf edge" galls on pin oak leaves. The galls on pin oak leaves have been unusually abundant in recent years. When the maggots mature, they emerge from the galls, drop to the ground and pupate for the winter.

When numbers of the gall gnat larvae decline, either through predation or by evacuation from their galls, the hungry itch mites crawl about on foliage or bail out of the trees into wind currents to find other suitable hosts.

Preliminary research indicates that 16,000 adult female itch mites (potential biters) can emerge from one infected oak leaf and fall to the ground. Entomologists estimate there are most likely millions of mites floating down from affected oak trees.

The mites inject a highly-potent neurotoxic venom into their insect prey through their needle-like mouthparts and voraciously consume their prey.

Adult females are unique among living animals in that they deposit their eggs into a pouch, or ovisac, formed at the tip of their abdomens. A mated female attaches to an insect host and enlarges to 1/16 inch -- about BB size. The female nurtures her brood directly from the egg stage to adulthood (no nymphal stages). As many as 300 mites can develop within the female's enlarged abdomen!

With a population doubling time of two days, Pyemotes mites can number in the millions in a short period of time.

There is no pain when these mites bite. In fact, most people are unaware that they have been bitten until the next day, when quarter-size reddened welts appear with a pimple on their center. The bites are most commonly distributed over the neck and shoulders and on the upper torso where clothing hangs loosely. They appear after people have been involved in outdoor activities.

"The bites we are seeing do not pose a major health threat - they mostly cause an annoying, intense itch," Dr. Eric Whitaker, director of the state public health department, said in a statement. "Do not scratch the bites, however, or you could cause an infection, which would create other health problems.

Entomologists at Kansas State University reported bites on dogs and cats as well as on humans during outbreaks.

Some bite sufferers find their own way of dealing with the outbreak including over-the-counter remedies and chemicals. Various state officials have recommended antihistamines and lotions. With the growing concern over the earth and holistic health, may others are seeking all natural remedies including new electrolyzed oxidizing water technology for healing.

This problem is not just restricted to Chicago. Any Midwest state with pin oak trees can suffer from these outbreaks. Past states have included Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas. Itch mite season runs from now through November.

Do you wake up for your nightly run to the loo between 2-4 am?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By: Helena Ederveen

It is not just the annoyance of having to get up while you just felt so comfortable under the cosy blankets. It is your body letting you know that there is something it is not happy about. For example, it could be a warning sign that the glomerular filtration system of your kidneys is under stress.

What can you do about it? It is important that a person starts to familiarize themselves with their own health, which requires a chance in the mind set.

Most people are ignorant about their own health status. For example, when you receive some biochemical testing results, are you keen to discover how you can understand them? Most people go by what they are being told and accept it.

The model of ignorance is not empowering people. Taking charge of your own health means you need to show interest in what your body is telling you. Prevention is the key.

It is this preventive mind set and taking action accordingly that has opened up eyes.

Once you realize that under every degenerative disease, one or more of the six subclinical defects play a role, you have given yourself a very powerful tool.

The six subclinical Defects are:

1. pH Imbalance

Leads to:

* Bone resorption

* Cancer

*Arterial disease

* Fatigue

* All degenerative processes

2. Anaerobic Tendency

* Brittle Bones

* Calcium Deposits

Will predispose to:

* Arthritis

* Pseudo-gout

* Cancer

* Complicated arterial lesions

* Tendency towards chronic infection or re-infection

* Chronic fatigue

* Multiple health complaints

Predisposes to

* Alzheimer's disease

* Type II diabetes

* All degenerative processes

This takes away that we get lost in the forest of the symptoms. After all a symptom is a message from our body telling us, hey there is something wrong.

It is a little bit like driving in a car and suddenly the car starts to stop and then you can start it again and then it stops again. Wouldn't this be annoying?

Celiac Disease - a chameleon- like problem

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Mitamins Team

A lifelong autoimmune intestinal disorder, Celiac disease is found in people with a genetic susceptibility to the disease. Damage to the mucosal surface of the small intestine is caused by a toxic reaction to the ingestion of gluten and interferes with the absorption of nutrients.

Celiac disease is unique in that a specific food component, gluten, has been identified as the trigger of Celiac disease symptoms. Gluten is the common name for the offending proteins in specific cereal grains that are harmful to persons with celiac disease. These proteins are found in all forms of wheat, rye and barley, and for the elimination of painful Celiac disease symptoms, must be eliminated.

Celiac disease symptoms are extremely varied and can often mimic other bowel disorders. Infants, toddlers, and children often exhibit growth failure, vomiting, bloated abdomen and behavioral changes. Major Celiac symptoms include abdominal cramping, intestinal gas, distention and bloating, chronic diarrhea or constipation, anemia, weight loss with large appetite, or weight gain

The main Celiac disease treatment that really works is the adherence to a gluten-free diet. When gluten is removed from the diet, the small intestine will start to heal and overall health improves. Medication is not normally required. Because osteoporosis is common and may be profound in patients with newly diagnosed CD, bone density should be measured at or shortly after diagnosis. Consult your physician regarding specific nutritional supplementation to correct any deficiencies. The diagnosed celiac should have medical follow-up to monitor the clinical response to the gluten-free diet. Dietary compliance increases the quality of life and decreases the likelihood of osteoporosis, intestinal lymphoma and other associated illnesses. Scientists have recently become more confident in claiming a cure for Celiac Disease in the form of the extreme Celiac disease diet mentioned above. Although it is hard to make the leap to eating so differently from everyone else, it is no longer impossible to carry out. And with a diet containing no gluten at all, Celiac Disease can be totally controlled.

Colonoscopy Prep: Brief Overview on Colonoscopy Prep

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Angel

Colonoscopy prep is the time that leads up to the actual process of "colonoscopy'. Since this process involves the cleaning of the bowel, this time is very crucial in the entire colonoscopy treatment. It is due to the fact that with the colonoscopy prep, there are chances for the occurrence of problems during the treatment and also proves helpful for the physician in gathering the information needed while performing the treatment and thus various possible problems can be kept at bay. Thus, it must be prepared as directed because its absence would mean unclean bowel which in turn would lead to inaccurate test results.

Usually needed colonoscopy prep time can be anywhere between 10 and 36 hrs depending on the test type one is having. However, the preparation for the process initiates a week before the beginning of the actual procedure. It is one or two days prior to the procedure that one is required to start the bowel cleaning process.

One Week Prior to Colonoscopy Prep

A week before the actual procedure of colonoscopy takes place; one is forbidden the use of any kind of aspirin or NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like naproxen, ibuprofen. In addition to this, one is also asked not to drink during this time.

In a case, one is having some medicines, do not stop taking them on their own rather ask for the advice of cardiologist about stopping the use of these medicines 3 to 5 days prior to the colonoscopy.

Be sure that the health care practitioner is well aware in case one has:

* Tendency to develop latex allergy
* Sleep apnoea
* Internal defibrillator
* Gone through hip/knee replacement previous year
* Been using Sinemet

Also make sure that the health practitioner is also informed beforehand if one has antibiotics before visiting the dentist or has problem of diabetes.

To be able to view the inside of the colon i.e. large intestine constitutes an important part of colonoscopy. So, if there will be too much food in the intestine; the physician will not have clear view of the colon. To avoid this problem, one is required to take some medicines to clean the bowel which is known as "bowel prep", it is essential for the procedure thought is done usually just a day prior to the procedure.

Other Reminders about Colonoscopy Prep

The most important thing to know is that the medicines one has during the colonoscopy can make him/her absent-minded, so it must be ensured that anyone going through the procedure is accompanied to the healthcare facility so that he/she could listen and note down the important information provided by the health professional. One should not go alone during the process.

After colonoscopy is done one should avoid operating or driving heavy machineries for at least about 24 hours at minimum. Moreover, alcohol consumption and the use of any prescription tranquilizers must also be avoided as the medicines used in the colonoscopy are tend to remain in the system for about a day.

To conclude, to have the colonoscopy done successfully, it is essential to get colonoscopy done properly which proves helpful in knowing about the health of colon.

Cervical Radiculopathy: Treating a Pinched Nerve in the Neck

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Let's suppose that you have been diagnosed as having a pinched nerve in your neck, also known as cervical radiculopathy. If so, you probably have pain in the neck and one shoulder. The pain might radiate into your arm and you might have weakness or numbness in the arm as well. Moving your neck in certain positions probably worsens the pain.

If you're a younger adult, the pinch could be due to a herniated (slipped) disc. Discs are the soft spacers that separate each pair of stacked neck-bones (vertebrae). If you're an older adult, the pinch is more likely due to a bony spur (spondylosis). In either case, you're in good company. A survey in Sicily showed that at any one time there were 3.5 active cases of cervical radiculopathy per population of 100,000. In Rochester, Minnesota, another survey showed 85 new cases each year of cervical radiculopathy per population of 100,000.

Let's say that your doctor has evaluated you thoroughly by taking a history of your symptoms and performing a physical examination. Perhaps with the additional help of an MRI of your cervical spine (neck) and electrical tests of nerve and muscle function (nerve conduction studies and electromyography) the diagnosis of cervical radiculopathy is deemed definite. Furthermore, there is no sign that the spinal cord itself is pinched. Now what?

Now what, indeed. Choosing a treatment for this condition is far from straightforward. Out of hundreds of published medical reports concerning treatment of cervical radiculopathy, most are case reports or case series. A "case series" translates roughly as: "We gave six patients in a row the same treatment and five of them got better." What can be concluded from a study of this kind? Did the treatment make the patients better or would they have improved anyway? We don't know.

The missing ingredient here is a comparison group of untreated or differently treated individuals known as a control group. The other mark of a quality study is that the chosen treatment is randomized, meaning that the research subjects agreed in advance to be assigned to one treatment group or another based on the equivalent of a coin-toss. So out of the hundreds of published studies involving treatment of this common condition, how many were randomized controlled trials? Unfortunately, the answer is just one.

Liselott Persson, Carl-Axel Carlsson and Jane Carlsson at the University Hospital of Lund, Sweden, randomly allocated 81 patients who had symptoms of cervical radiculopathy present for at least three months to any of three treatments -- surgery, physical therapy or a cervical collar. The patients ranged from 28 to 64 years old and 54% of them were male. The surgeons used the so-called Cloward procedure, removing fragments of protruding discs and spurs through an incision in the front of the neck, and then fusing two neck-bones together by means of a bone-graft. Physical therapy involved 15 sessions over a span of three months and consisted of whatever the physical therapist considered appropriate, variously including any of the following: heat application, cold application, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, massage, manipulation, exercise and education. In the cervical collar group, patients wore rigid, shoulder-resting collars every day for three months. Additionally, some of the subjects wore soft collars overnight.

How did the study turn out? Three of the subjects who were assigned to surgery refused the procedure because they had already improved on their own. For statistical purposes their outcomes were included with those who actually received the operation. After three months the surgery and physical therapy groups reported, on average, less pain. After an additional 12 months patients in all three groups had less pain than at the beginning of the study and the outcomes of each treatment were statistically alike. Measurements of mood and overall function following treatment were likewise equal among the groups.

So, over the long haul, no treatment was better than the others. Of course, within each group some patients did better or worse than others and this spread of outcomes was not reflected in the overall averages. In fact, five patients in the collar group and one patient in the physical therapy group went on to receive surgery owing to lack of satisfactory improvement. In addition, eight patients in the surgery group underwent a second operation that in one case was due to a complication of the first operation.

With this Swedish study representing the only rigorous investigation of treatment outcomes in cervical radiculopathy, there are a number of unanswered questions. For example, what are the effects on cervical radiculopathy of painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, local injections, systematic traction or other forms of surgery? We don't know. What happens if there is no treatment whatsoever? We don't know the answer to that question either.

Thus, in the care of individual patients there is a yin-yang balancing act between the medical edict of "Above all, do no harm" and the practical dictum of "Do what you have to do." This balancing act usually means starting with less intrusive treatments like drugs and physical therapy. If symptoms fail to improve or become unbearable, an operation may be helpful.

Degenerative Disc Disease: A Guide To Understanding Its Symptoms And Treatment

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Carl Formby

Degenerative disc disease is characterized by severe lower back pain. The symptoms of degenerative spine are easy for a person to recognize, the most common being stiffness and tingling in the spine. It is also one of the most misunderstood diseases. Degenerative disc is not actually a disease, but a term used to explain the normal changes that occur in your spinal discs as you grow with age.

Healthy spinal discs are extremely elastic and can be compressed. They separate the interlocked bones that make up the spine. Discs are responsible for absorbing shock that is caused to the spine, making it flexible, and able to bend and twist. As the discs get older, they become less elastic and problems occur.

Degenerative discs can occur anywhere along the spine, but the highest probability is for them to occur in the lower back--also called the lumbar region--and the neck--also called the cervical region.

The symptoms of degenerative disc disease are numerous. The most common symptoms are stiffness, pain and restricted activity, and depending on the nerve root affected, the pain can occur in the neck, legs and knees. In most cases, the symptoms are of mild pain, but sometimes there is deep pain that often increases when the joint is moved, and lessens when the joint has fully warmed up.

Intense pain is caused by compression of the nerves, which occurs when the spinal disc gets thinner. As a result, the space between the bones narrows. Sometimes, in severe cases, bone and nerve compression is caused that, apart from causing pain, also gives a burning sensation, numbness, and tingling. An extreme case can be that the organs connected to these nerves become diseased, with the seriousness depending on the way degeneration is caused in the discs.

Patients showing symptoms of degenerative spine complain of chronic pain in the lower back along with intermittent attacks of low back pain. These small episodes of pain from disc degeneration can last from a few days to a few months. The amount of chronic pain varies and can range from being a simple irritation to serious pain, disabling the affected person. In some cases the pain can become intense and then return to a low level or disappear entirely. Activities like bending, lifting and twisting can worsen the pain while activities like walking and running can give some relief rather than sitting for a long time. It is recommended to change positions frequently. Lying down is the best option. The symptoms and treatment for degenerative spine disease are covered further in more articles at http://www.degenerativespineoptions.com

However, in an active person aged between 30 and 40, the pain should not be severe and persistent. If it is, then medical advice should be sought. If degenerative disc disease is the cause of the pain, then ignoring the pain will only lead to the pain getting worse as time goes on. With the range of excellent treatments for back pain now including exercise, medicine and a range of surgical procedures there is no need to allow the pain to continue. A consultation with your doctor will enable you to consider the best treatment options for the type of back pain you are suffering from.

What Are The Causes Of Agoraphobia?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by: Giri Anantha

Agoraphobia causes the sufferer to react in strange ways in the eyes of people who don't have it or have not even heard of it. It's a hard illness to understand.

Yet, when you look at why an agoraphobic person reacts in the ways that they do, it's not at all surprising. They are afraid of feeling fear and even terror.

Agoraphobics Have To Willingly Face "Danger"

When an agoraphobic person has to go out or encounter whatever situation it is that causes them to have a panic attack, if they can avoid it, they will.

They do not want to go through intense fear and physical sensations such as dizziness (for example) that may result. Avoidance is something they get really good at.

This is understandable. Let's be honest, nobody likes to go through fear, yet, the agoraphobic person has to do just that. To the layperson, think of how you'd feel if confronted with a hungry lion.

To an agoraphobic person, going far from home on their own is "that hungry lion". If you came face to face with a lion just once, it's more than enough, but an agoraphobic person has to do it over and over. Can you imagine how difficult that would be?

Agoraphobia Causes

It's estimated that over 95% of people with agoraphobia have panic attacks. It's rare to have agoraphobia on its own. No one knows for sure what causes agoraphobia, but there are several theories.

Much research has gone into this. It could be genetic. In one research study, it was found that if one identical twin suffered from panic, it was likely the other would as well. The numbers were significantly lower for fraternal twins.

It's also thought that chemical imbalances are the reason. The fact that medication (both conventional and alternative) can calm things down might suggest that there is some truth in this.

There's no doubt that you also pick up psychological problems through association. For example, if you had a panic attack on a couple of occasions at the bank, then whenever you need to go to the bank, you will be thinking, "Oh god, please don't let it happen again."

Agoraphobia causes may one day be pinned down to a specific reason. Until then, as impossible as it seems, with help and support, you can improve or even completely overcome your fears.

Giri Anantha has extensive knowledge on panic attacks and agoraphobia. In his website called Panic And Agoraphobia, you will find helpful information on getting better, including using drug-free alternatives. This article can be found in his site at this URL:

Suffering From A Level 5 Emergency Restless Legs Syndrome - What To Do

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Linda A.

Restless Legs Syndrome is a common disorder that causes insomnia. It is particularly a problem for women because it frequently comes on during pregnancy and may be related to the blood loss of menstrual cycles, which lowers iron levels. The abnormal and excessive movements of restless legs syndrome can interfere with normal sleep. It has been called the most common medical problem you have never heard of. It is the second most common sleep disorder and affects as many as 12 million Americans, yet doctors hardly ever diagnose it. It is much more common among older people affecting 30-40 percent of people as they age. Sometimes restless legs may be caused by other medical conditions, including iron deficiency, but in many cases the cause is never found.

Restless legs produce an unpleasant feeling in the lower limbs that often has a tendency to spread and may even rise to involve the trunk and arms. The nature of the feeling is difficult to pin down descriptively. It is an achy, expanding, unpleasant sensation which the sufferer, by experience, knows can be relieved by movement, thus giving to the name restless legs. There is an urge to move around in bed, get out of bed, walk around, stomp and shake the legs, and even run in place to undo the unpleasant sensations.

Although people complain that their symptoms are the most severe at bed-time, some people develop an irresistible urge to move their legs or to walk around when they are sedentary or in situations that require that they sit still. Maybe you go crazy if you have to sit as a passenger in a car, you might also find it difficult to sit still in a movie theater. Some people with RLS fall asleep at the wrong time and in the wrong places during the day because of severe daytime sleepiness, which can drastically impact their personal and professional life. Even when they fall asleep, the continuous disruptions and movements result in poor sleep quality and sleepiness the next day. And some people have the awful combination of being overwhelmingly sleepy and yet unable to sleep.

A related disorder is periodic leg movements which is jerking rhythmic movements, most of which occur in the legs every twenty to forty seconds across the night disrupting sleep. Each time the leg muscles twitch, brain changes, including wakefulness, occur. This is not the same as those leg cramps or twitches that happen at sleep onset. Periodic limb movement and restless legs syndrome should not be confused with nocturnal leg cramps. Although leg cramps can be quite painful, they rarely indicate a serious medical problem. They usually are a delayed reaction to strenuous daytime activity level one way or the other. Daily calf-stretching exercises just before bed-time can help prevent leg cramps. If you experience a cramp, try to interrupt it immediately by stretching your leg out straight and bending your toes back toward your head.

It would be worth a try to see if any of these alternatives can provide you with some relief for restless legs syndrome so you can avoid medications and their side effects.

• Get regular exercise
• Stretch the muscles in the back of your legs
• Use a heating pad
• Use cold packs
• Massage the affected area
• Take aspirin or ibuprofen
• Wear long socks or stockings
• Avoid all forms of caffeine, certain medications, stimulants, and certain pain relievers

Restless Legs Syndrome is a common disorder that causes insomnia. The abnormal and excessive movements of restless legs syndrome can interfere with normal sleep and can literally drive one crazy. Visit http://www.better-sleep-resources.com to learn what to do in case of a level 5 emergency restless legs syndrome episode.

Natural Vision Improvement - Begin to See Clearer

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Michael Russell

Did you know that there are people who can see like an eagle without binoculars? But over 25% of the world's population needs eyeglasses? Do you already need them? If you are working with a computer your chances of having to use eyeglasses are growing. Do you like this idea? Do you want to change your lenses periodically for stronger ones? I do not. Please believe me. When the ophthalmologist told me I need to wear eyeglasses, a few years ago, I was so angry because of that situation. When after a few months I had to replace them with stronger ones, I was even angrier.

The eyes are very big oxygen consumers in the human body You need to breath a lot of fresh air in every single day. The lack of oxygen leads to poor eyesight, while enough oxygen leads to better eyesight and vision improvement. Let me tell you about an experience I had, which confirms this.

I walked fast in a park for one hour, breathing in slowly and keeping my breathing comfortable. Do you know what happened? I noticed real vision improvement and I felt younger. And all this happened in only one hour! It was amazing! You'll say it can't be true. It was hard to believe, but it was true. You have to try it yourself to see that it's true.

Let's see some details. The walk was at 0 degrees C. When the air is cold it has more oxygen, and leads to faster results. But you don't have to walk for one hour, or in cold air to see results. This is only speeding up the process. What's important: to take a walk in fresh air, breathing in slowly and after that retaining your breath as long is comfortable, and do it regularly, daily if possible. Even a few minutes it's fine. N.B.: If you have health problems talk to your physician first about trying a new breathing style. Never try hard, just do whatever you want to do. It has to be pleasant, and natural in every aspect. Vision improvement will show by relaxing, not forcing it. You want to help your eyes and body, not to burn them.

Let's talk now about the telescopic eyesight. There is an exercise that American Indians use to develop it. Look for 6 seconds at your nose. Then look for another 6 seconds at something 1 meter or so away, then to 5 meters, 10 meters, 50 m, 100 m, 500 m, 1000 m, 2000 m, and finally to the horizon. Each and every time glance gently for 6 seconds. Repeat the process for 3 minutes, but no more than 5 minutes. Don't force it! After that, you rub your palms until they become warm, about 30 seconds. Then cover your closed eyes with your palms and then let your eyes get relaxed and warm while you are breathing slowly a few minutes. Make sure that your hands are clean when you touch your eyes with them. Do the exercise 3 or 4 times a week. Don't overdo it. Overdoing can do more harm than good. It's better once a week than 7 times a week! Eventually you will get telescopic eyesight, a real vision improvement! Start your vision improvement NOW. Write down a simple plan to improve your vision, then put it where you can see it daily, and do it. Stick to it. You will be glad, because your eyesight will start to improve today and get better and better. Thank you for your time. Let your eyes be happy and you too!

The 10 Most Obscure Hair Loss Treatments Of All Times

ป้ายกำกับ:

Men have been losing their hair forever. Medieval Herbals, ancient Egyptian scrolls, Imperial Chinese medical books, and witches potions all include some treatment for hair loss. Obviously, men of all ages have been plagued by this problem!

Some of these hair loss treatments are simple and even used today, such as rubbing a red pepper potion on your scalp. They range from a simple herb seeped in warm water to elaborate poultices and potions involving animal droppings, gemstones, animal fats, and in some cases, even blood. It seems that even back then, guys hated losing their hair and would go to any lengths, including going to the local witch for some foul smelling treatment.

Here are the ten most obscure and weird hair loss treatments, from all cultures:

#1. A 12th century book of shadows (a Wicca spell and potion book) has one interesting hair loss treatment, including a poultice and a spell:

"Creates a potion which will cause rapid hair growth.

Get a candle of any type, but the color of the candle should be the color of the hair you want to grow. Light the candle and drip wax into the water while chanting:

Colored wax infest this water,
And from the flame make it grow hotter,
And from the mixture soon to be,
Grow some hair for all to see.

Then mix in the dirt while chanting

From within this dirt small seeds do be,
Way to small for thee to see,
Yet from the life force in the seeds,
Hair shall grow like nasty weeds.

Once you have a somewhat muddy and thick mixture, stop and use the cloth to strain the muddy water. It is this muddy water which contains the hair growing magic. This water can then be mixed with anything (like shampoo) and used to help hair growth.

You can also just use the mud itself as a mud poultice that will make your hair grow."

#2. A Chinese herbal handbook dating from the 8th century B.C. offers the following treatment for hair loss:

"Catch a green grass snake and place it in a silk bag. Pound the snake inside the silk bag, and then mix with FoTi (polygoni multiflori) root. Boil the mixture and place for three nights under the full moon. Smear the mixture on your scalp and do not remove for two nights and one day. Your hair will grow luxuriously long and black, and you will no longer lose your hair, nor will it ever become gray."

#3. The Plains Native Americans often created a poultice of nettles, scorpions and millipedes ground up and boiled together to prevent hair loss. Urine from a pregnant woman was applied to the scalp as well.

#4. An ancient Egyptian text includes a potion made of honey, beer, boiled wheat, and goat dung. This potion is supposed to "quicken the blood and life force." Egyptians believed that natural hair loss was a symptom of the Gods' disfavor. Since the Gods were in charge of the life force, the potion was meant to "trick" the gods with the goat dung. Since goats never lose their hair, it was thought that if goat dung was consumed or applied to the skin, the gods would believe that you are a goat, and "skip" you while surveying humankind.

#5. The oldest hair loss prescription is also Egyptian. The prescription is for a mixture of iron, red lead, onions, alabaster, and honey which was to be swallowed, after first reciting a magical invocation to the sun god.

#6. An old Viking legend includes an interesting hair loss remedy: applying goose droppings all over the scalp. This was supposed to cure baldness, even in its most advanced stages.

#7. In 420 BC, Hippocrates also attempted to cure baldness with the following very interesting mixture: a mixture of opium, horseradish, pigeon droppings, beetroot, and various spices applied to the scalp. Since Hippocrates continued to lose his hair, we can only assume that this particular obscure treatment was not very successful. He later decided that castration was the best solution, since eunuchs didn't lose their hair. Any takers for that method?

#8. A particularly strange hair loss treatment was administered by the Celtic Druids. The Druid would rub rosemary on the bald patch, and then the patient would dunk his head three times in ice water (not a pleasant experience in British winters!). Afterwards the druid would sacrifice a red squirrel, and pray that the squirrel's long tail hair would affect hair growth for the patient.

#9. Egyptians seem to have been obsessed with hair loss. Yet another hair loss treatment is found is Egyptian medical papyrus texts: fat extracted from lions, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, ibex, serpents and geese was rubbed all over the scalp, and sometimes left on the scalp for several days. In the Egyptian heat, one can only imagine the smell. And one very special treatment was reserved for kings - toes of a dog, refuse of dates, and a hoof of an ass.

#10. Last but not least, the Indians (from India!) have two particularly interesting hair loss remedies: washing the hair with a paste of cooked black gram dhal, (urad dhal) and fenugreek (methi) lengthens the hair. A fine paste made from pigeon pea or red gram (arhar dhal) can also be applied regularly on bald patches, with beneficial results.

Now, of course you can try any of these at home (I'd be careful with the green snake, and the lion fat, really I would), but why take a risk when you can enjoy natural hair loss herbal treatments that combine ancient wisdom with modern pharmacy?

Dry Mouth Can Ruin More Than Just Your Mood

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

It is tempting to think that bad breath is something that happens to other people. Conversely, if you are currently suffering from it, you may wonder if you are the only one who is so afflicted. Most likely you will try to do everything in your power to mask the foul odors that are escaping your dental cavity. Be assured that neither the Queen nor President of any nation is exempt from the occurrence of bad breath or dry mouth once in a while. A common contributing factor to this condition is the presence of anaerobic bacteria that thrive in your mouth.

Yet if you notice that instead of being an occasional occurrence you are fighting what seems to be a losing battle against a chronic presentation of halitosis, you may gave a real problem. You’ll need to consider that perhaps the bad breath is more than just the presence of anaerobic bacteria, but instead the hallmark of an underlying oral health problem. For example, gum disease is a known culprit when it comes to bad breath, and if this is truly the underlying cause, there is little you will be able to do on your own to reverse the course of the disease. In fact, on your own you won’t even be able to halt its progression and prevent further damage.

At this point the visit to a dental professional is highly indicated. Failure to make and keep that appointment will lead to social and personal repercussions as you will gradually begin to feel more and more self conscious about the smell of your breath. Never sure if your breath fresheners are doing the trick or if your halitosis is once again so noticeable that others may recoil from you as you speak, you may soon begin to feel and act as though stigmatized. Obviously, with the ability to have your bad breath taken care of properly by a dental professional this form of social separation is unnecessary. Be sure to stay away from those commercial mouthwashes and sprays however, as they can dry out your mouth and make the problem much worse. Use natural mouth formulas that contain peppermint, spearmint, and almond oils.

Yet even if you are not worried about the social ramifications, consider the professional consequences you may face! Will you be able to chase that next run on the corporate ladder as confidently if your halitosis seems to color every interaction with others you may face? Will meetings go as well? Will you be able to woo clients and customers with the same winning smile and firm handshake? Will you be insecure and nervous, thus projecting less than your calm and collected self that in the past has impressed your employers?

Of course, all of these considerations pale when compared to the possible impact on dental health your condition may imply. For example, since anaerobic bacterial are an accompaniment for gum disease, the failure to have this ailment dealt with on a professional level will not only destroy the quality of your breath and subsequent social interactions, but also the health of your gums as well as your teeth. After a thorough evaluation from a professional, consider using natural dental products which will sweeten your breath and also prevent the growth of anaerobic bacteria.

It is tempting to think that bad breath is something that happens to other people. Conversely, if you are currently suffering from it, you may wonder if you are the only one who is so afflicted. Most likely you will try to do everything in your power to mask the foul odors that are escaping your dental cavity. How Does Your Heart React to Coffee?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by: Ann Stewart

A 2005 study found that 'In contrast to early studies, recent research indicates that habitual moderate coffee intake does not represent a health hazard and may even be associated with beneficial effects on cardiovascular health 'In fact, no clear association between coffee and the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack or other cardiovascular diseases has been demonstrated

Data collected for the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Epidemiological (NHANES I) by James Greenberg and colleagues at the City and State Universities of New York (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2007, 85 (2): 392- 398), revealed that those over 65 with normal blood pressure who drank at least 4 caffeinated beverages a day had a 53% reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

Caffeine may escalate the risk of heart attacks in some coffee drinkers, but lower the risk in others, based on the presence of genes that govern whether the body processes the stimulant slowly or quickly, scientists report today. Heart attacks might be a risk for coffee drinkers with a common genetic trait that makes caffeine linger in their bodies, a study suggests.

Correspondingly, hyper cholesterolaemic people younger than 59 with the rapid *1A genotype lowered their risk of heart attack by 52% when drinking 1 cup of coffee daily; 2-3 cups a day lowered risk by 43%, and 4 or more cups daily resulted in a reduction in heart attack risk of 17%.

In plain language that means that for those who process coffee fast, coffee reduces the risk of heart attacks. However, for the slow ones it increases the risk of heart attacks as much as heavy smoking.

Persons with or at increased risk of developing high cholesterol levels should drink only filtered coffee. Epidemiological studies have linked consumption of boiled, but not filtered, coffee with increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Research has shown that caffeine consumption may have a small effect on blood pressure; however, scientists do not consider coffee drinking to be an important risk factor for hypertension. The key risk factors are known to be a low potassium intake, high sodium intake, sedentary lifestyle and obesity.

In a 2005 research meta analysis (in which several research studies on a single topic are reviewed and synthesized into an overall conclusion), the German medical journal Therapeutische Umschau concluded that: "Despite many studies, no clear association between coffee and the risk of hypertension, heart attack, and other cardiovascular diseases was found."

In the past, raised cholesterol levels associated with coffee consumption have been linked to a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The consumer's cholesterol levels will not be significantly raised by normal coffee consumption, nor will they be increasing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

If you're over 65 and don't have high blood pressure, daily coffee consumption may offer protection against both cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline.

A blood pressure reading of 140/90 or higher is considered to be high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. This means that coffee itself in not an actual risk, it is simply associated with the real risk factor.

In conclusion, then I would say to "listen" to your body. You know how your body reacts to coffee.

The bottom line is that the good qualities of coffee are its antioxidant properties! It is my opinion that the caffeine and the acid affect your body's pH balance, give you the jitters, and cause you to become addicted to the brew! Coffee (and tea) provides short-term boosts; however, the opposite effects are felt soon after, causing you to crave for more.

Sure, if you're a coffee lover and/or you are totally hooked on it for your daily boost, then it's comforting to know that there seems to be no major health hazards connected with it.

For optimum health that keeps on making you feel good without any sudden downers that make you crave for more and have you climbing the wall in the process, do seriously consider a natural, fruit-based antioxidant. Any healthy, full-of-goodness-whole-fruit-juice-concentrate antioxidant is never toxic or addictive. It provides the kind of healing goodness that you feel instantly and constantly.

Bionic Men: Using Mechanical Devices to Cure Impotence

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Alex Ellorde

Over the last few years, impotent men around the world have relied on some little blue pills to help them obtain and maintain their erections. But the pills are not without their complications. Some men experience side effects while taking oral phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil). These side effects can range from headache, flushing of the face and body, indigestion, runny nose, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, muscle pains and vision disturbances. These medications are also contraindicated for patients taking nitrate-based drugs or alpha-blockers, because interaction with PDE5 inhibitors can be fatal. Viagra has also been reported to cause permanently impaired vision or even blindness in some patients. Other drug treatments available involve direct injections to the penis or shooting pellets down the urinary pipe, both of which can be unpleasant for patients. It is because of these side effects from drug treatments that some men prefer to explore other possibilities such as mechanical or surgical methods to deal with their condition.

There are a number of mechanical devices available to aid impotent men, such as vacuum pumps, penis rings and vibrators. Vacuum pumps are cylinders that fit over the penis, which allow the user to draw up blood to the member by sucking out the air. Once the member is engorged, a specially designed penis ring can be fitted on to the base of the shaft to help stop the blood from draining back to the body. Vibrating devices can also be used to vitalize the male member either by direct contact or by stimulating the prostate. Some men may feel too embarrassed to purchase such devices because of a social stigma attached to them. However, privacy issues can be dealt with by ordering these through the Internet.

On the other hand, surgery is a much more drastic step to take when dealing with impotence. Surgery usually has one of three goals: to implant a device that can cause the penis to become erect; to reconstruct arteries to increase flow of blood to the penis; or to block off veins that allow blood to leak from the penile tissues. Prostheses are mechanical devices that surgeons insert into the penis to allow men to manually raise or inflate the penis for sexual intercourse and to lower it afterwards. Patients can choose to have either a flexible sterile rod put into the shaft or an inflatable implant that comes with its own fluid reservoir and pump, although the latter is preferred because it leaves the penis into a more natural state. Possible problems can occur as with many other implants, such as bleeding, infection and the breakdown of the mechanical device although the latter has been somewhat limited because of recent technological advances.

There are cases of impotence that benefit from penile arterial revascularization. It is designed to keep blood flowing by rerouting it around a blocked or injured vessel at the base of the shaft, usually due to a pelvic fracture or blunt trauma. This procedure is recommended for men under the age of 45 with no known risk factors for atherosclerosis, a condition where progressive thickening and hardening of the walls of medium-sized and large arteries as a result of fat deposits on their inner lining. Surgeons microscopically connect nearby arteries to keep the blood circulating into the penis.

On the other hand, venous ligation surgery is done to correct leaking veins. This leakage decreases the amount of blood to the penis, thereby resulting in a diminished erection. Surgeons intentionally block off problem areas to ensure that the appropriate amount of blood is trapped to create an erection. However, ligation only has a 50% long term success rate so it is rarely used to correct impotence.

Patients who are considering vascular surgery should be aware that it is still widely regarded as experimental and may not be covered by your health insurance. There are also conditions that can exclude men from being a candidate for surgery, such as insulin-dependent diabetes, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and tobacco use. The procedures can also cause penile scarring(fibrosis), numbness or some pain.

It is important to discuss the possible complications with your doctor before consenting to any type of surgery. Also, because of the experimental nature of the procedures, not all urologists may be trained to perform the delicate surgery. If necessary, get a second opinion. It might be a better idea to try non-surgical treatment options before attempting anything invasive. Most importantly, don't forget that the brain is the primary sexual organ in the body. Being open with your partner about the condition and exploring other avenues of pleasure can be just as beneficial to you as any medical procedures.

Thrombophlebitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Juliet Cohen

Thrombophlebitis is swelling (inflammation) of a vein caused by a blood clot. On rare occasions, thrombophlebitis (often shortened to phlebitis ) can affect veins in your arms. At times, when affecting the greater saphenous vein, thrombophlebitis can progress into the deep venous system, which may lead to pulmonary embolism. When it occurs repeatedly in different locations, it is known as "Thrombophlebitis migrans". Thrombo means clot. Phlebitis means a vein with inflammation, or the swelling and irritation that happens as the result of an injury. Thrombophlebitis also is known as phlebitis, phlebothrombosis, and venous thrombosis. Thrombophlebitis often is caused by prolonged inactivity, such as from sitting during a long period of travel in an airplane or automobile or from lengthy bed rest after surgery. Often, thrombophlebitis occurs in people with varicose veins; however, most people with varicose veins do not develop thrombophlebitis.

Thrombophlebitis itself may not be too serious, but it can lead to other conditions that are life-threatening. Paralysis, certain types of cancer and use of the hormone estrogen also may lead to thrombophlebitis. An inherited tendency for blood clots places you at higher risk of thrombophlebitis. In rare occasions, some cases can lead to infection and tissue damage from the loss of healthy circulation. There are two parts to thrombophlebitis, inflammation of a vein and blood clot formation. If the inflammation is minor, the disease usually is called venous thrombosis or phlebothrombosis. The main symptoms are tenderness and pain in the area of the affected vein. Redness and/or swelling also may be seen. Paralysis, certain types of cancer and use of the hormone estrogen also may lead to thrombophlebitis. An inherited tendency for blood clots places you at higher risk of thrombophlebitis. If an intravenous line is in use, the risk of superficial thrombophlebitis may be reduced by routine rotation of the IV site and immediate removal of the IV line if signs of inflammation develop.

Causes of Thrombophlebitis

The common causes of Thrombophlebitis include the following:

Sitting for a long period of time (such as on a long airplane trip) increases a person's risk of thrombophlebitis.

Cigarette smoking.

An infection or an injury to a vein.

You may get a thrombophlebitis from wearing a cast which can cause your blood to pool.

Taking birth control pills.

Intravenous drug use.

Caustic materials, such as lighter fluid and street drugs, injected intravenously.

Symptoms of Thrombophlebitis

Some symptoms related to Thrombophlebitis are as follows:

Warmth and tenderness over the vein.

Skin redness (not always present).

Hard vein.

Local warmth.

A feeling of heaviness in the leg or affected area.

Swelling ( edema ) of the extremities (ankle and foot).

Treatment of Thrombophlebitis

Here is list of the methods for treating Thrombophlebitis:

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation.

Rest and Firm bandaging.

Apply moist heat to reduce inflammation and pain.

Antibiotics are prescribed if infection is present.

In rare instances, a filter may be inserted into the main vein in your abdomen (vena cava) to prevent clots that break loose in leg veins from lodging in your lungs

Keep pressure off of the area to reduce pain and decrease the risk of further damage.

Surgical removal, stripping, or bypass of the vein is rarely needed but may be recommended in some situations.

Syphilis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , ,

by Juliet Cohen

Syphilis is a transmitted disease caused by a spirochaete bacterium, Treponema pallidum. Syphilis has a myriad of presentations and can mimic many other infections and immune-mediated processes in advanced stages. Syphilis is passed from person to person through direct contact with a syphilis sore. Sores occur mainly on the external genitals, anus, or in the rectum. Syphilis can also be passed from mother to infant during pregnancy causing a disease called congenital syphilis. Any active person can be infected with syphilis, although there is a greater incidence among young people between the ages of 15 and 30 years. It is more prevalent in urban than rural areas. Syphilis can be frightening because if it goes untreated, it can lead to serious health problems and increase a person's risk for HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS.

Syphilis can be acquired or congenital. Primary syphilis occurs within 3 weeks of contact with an infected individual. Syphilis has many alternate names, including syph, Cupid's Disease, the Pox, lues , and the French disease. The signs and symptoms of syphilis are myriad; before the advent of serological testing, diagnosis was more difficult and the disease was dubbed the "Great Imitator" because it was so often confused with other diseases. Syphilis cannot be spread through contact with toilet seats, doorknobs, swimming pools, hot tubs, bathtubs, shared clothing, or eating utensils. The final stage of syphilis is called tertiary syphilis and is characterized by brain or central nervous system involvement, cardiovascular involvement with inflammation of the aorta, and gummatous syphilis. Left untreated, syphilis can lead to serious complications or death. But with early diagnosis and treatment, the disease can be successfully treated.

Causes of Syphilis

The common causes and risk factor's of Syphilis include the following:

A bacterium called Treponema pallidum.

Transfusion of infected blood.

Direct contact with a syphilis sore on the body of an infected person.

An infected pregnant woman can also pass the disease to her unborn child.

Having with more than one partner.

Symptoms of Syphilis

Some sign and symptoms related to Syphilis are as follows:

The first symptom of syphilis is often a small, round, firm ulcer called a chancre ("shanker") at the place where the bacteria entered your body.

Fever.

Enlarged lymph nodes in your groin.

Positive serology.

Extragenital chancres occur most commonly above the neck, typically affecting the lips or oral cavity.

Rash - Bilaterally symmetric.

Soreness and aching.

Fatigue and a vague feeling of discomfort.

Treatment of Syphilis

Here is list of the methods for treating Syphilis:

Penicillin, an antibiotic, injected into the muscle is the best treatment for syphilis. If you are allergic to penicillin, your health care provider may give you another antibiotic to take by mouth.

In patients with allergy to penicillin, skin testing and desensitization are recommended.

Pregnant women with a history of allergic reaction to penicillin should undergo penicillin desensitization followed by appropriate penicillin therapy.

Avoid having while being treated, to reduce the chances of getting the infection again or transmitting it to someone else.

Bed rest, pain relievers (such as aspirin, acetaminophen , or ibuprofen ), and liquids can help.

Alternative treatment regimens should be used only in cases of documented penicillin allergy.

Muscle Recuperation Before Bed

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

During bodybuilding workouts, a person already knows that the emphasis given to execute bodybuilding reps successfully takes a lot of strength, focus and energy and at the end of the day; a good night rest is just what is needed.

Since bodybuilding training is a physical activity, everything that is needed to achieve reps and successful training sessions is relied on your physical ability, right? This is not entirely correct. While bodybuilding involves training for muscle development, proper mental focus and rest afterwards is also needed. In fact, it is highly important to gather a healthy mental condition after each training since it plays a major role in helping the body recuperate fast for the lost energy of a recent training session.

In order for you to make sure that you are getting a good night rest to compliment your recuperation period is to focus and relax before going to bed at night. To be able to do this, first thing for you to do is to release your breath for about 8 times. Only breathe in through your nostrils and not your mouth. You will only need to use your mouth when you exhale. Be sure to exhale slowly.

The idea here is for you to breathe in and out calmly. No tensions whatsoever. While you are doing this, be in synced with your breathing rhythm and imagine the muscles of your entire body loosening to the comfort it feels. While doing this, you must also imagine not only the muscles that are relaxing but also your entire body is succumbing to it.

Repeat this pace several times. Make sure that your mind isn’t also distracted by any outside disturbances such as noise coming from passing cars, people chatting, stomping feet…just be sure that you are not bothered by any of these.

Once your body feels entirely relaxed, you can then go to bed and let the natural recuperation process begin.

Are You in Danger from Metabolic Syndrome X?

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

Syndrome X is actually called Metabolic Syndrome X. This was discovered over 10 years ago, but scientists have been looking for this for 100 years.

What does it mean? Metabolic has to do with metabolism, the way our body uses energy. Syndrome means many diseases involved. X means "we don't know". So it's basically a bunch of diseases that relate to your metabolism that scientists don't know enough about. The cause of Syndrome X is now being discovered and determined.

In Syndrome X, the blood has high levels of sugar, but unlike diabetes, there is lots of insulin to process the sugar, but the sugar (food) is not getting in the cells to provide energy. You are tired.

A sign of having this Syndrome X would be a person who needs to eat sugar, carbohydrates, and caffeine to keep going throughout the day. They get an energy boost, which falls in an hour, and then they need another boost and another boost throughout the day.

Syndrome X is only found in industrialized countries and cities. It started when white flour and sugar came along with the industrial revolution in the 1800's. It got much worse when companies started using fructose to sweeten foods. It is 20 times sweeter than glucose (sugar). Your body can't handle all this sugar.

It is estimated that 99% of women have Syndrome X. Even if that statistic is high, that still means a lot of women have Syndrome X.

So, what's happening in the body with this Syndrome X? Let's say you eat an apple. Your body only absorbs 20% of the sugar contained in that apple. The same goes for corn on the cob. Bananas are higher at 40%. Watermelon is 10%. Eating these whole foods does not produce a huge amount of sugar (carbohydrates) for your body to deal with. The body makes a little insulin to go with the glucose which then goes into the liver. Then the glucose (energy) is sent to the cells along with insulin, which helps the sugar (energy) get into the cell.

Now, let's look at what happens when you eat white flour, sugar, or fructose (high fructose corn syrup, like the sugar in soft drinks).

A note to make here: Most all bread available is based on 'white flour'. Even wheat bread is made from 'white flour'. Bread made from flour that has been truly stone ground the old fashioned way is the only time you get away from 'white flour'. Stone ground flour will spoil in a week whereas processed flour will keep for years. That's why the industrialized societies changed to processed flour, but it has hurt our health. And the adverse effects are getting worse with each generation.

When your stomach sees flour or sugar coming, it tells the pancreas to make lots of insulin to deal with the large amounts of glucose from white flour (or sugar or fructose). This huge amount of sugar (because 100% is able to be absorbed) goes into the liver, which monitors all food. The liver tastes the blood and decides that it is too sweet, so it turns the sugar into fat, which then goes into the bloodstream.

This fat is the triglycerides in your blood. It is sugar converted to fat. White blood cells then gobble up this fat (because there's too much of it) and store it in your belly, hips, everywhere.

This fat, along with a second type produced (which cannot be broken down, the body can't burn it), will also cover and coat a cell. This covering of fat over the outside of a cell prevents food/glucose from getting into the cell to provide energy.

So, our cells aren't getting enough energy and we have to eat more sweets to give us a quick boost, causing the pancreas to secrete more insulin. I believe this constant secreting of insulin is what wears out the pancreas and gives people the tendency to get Type II Diabetes.

It's estimated that 70-90% of people have high triglycerides. This high blood sugar, turned into high fat by the liver, causes 70% of modern diseases.

Fat in the arteries leads to strokes and heart disease. Fatty deposits on the brain can lead to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Multiple Sclerosis. DNA damage can lead to auto-immune diseases while unchecked cell growth in the body can lead to cancer.

When the liver breaks down fructose Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) is produced. This converts to Palmitic Acid, which goes inside the cell.

But when Palmitic Acid is in the cell it then converts to Salimide. This Salimide goes into the DNA and attacks it, causing a mutation. These mutations can make a person prone to certain types of cancer. They can also be the source of auto-immune diseases where the body attacks its own cells because it doesn't recognize them, due to the DNA damage.

These mutations also get passed on to our kids. This is why our children's health is not going to be as good as was our parent's health, unless we change our ways and teach our children how to live healthier lives.

So, basically, sugar converted to fat is damaging the genes in our DNA.

It will take 2-3 generations of improved attention to health and nutrition to fully correct damaged genes, but it is possible.

I Have Osteoarthritis In My Hip And My Doctor Wants To Inject It With Cortisone… What Do I Need To Know?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by: Nathan Wei

Among the many treatment options available for people with osteoarthritis are injections of glucocorticoids… commonly known as cortisone injections.

Glucocorticoids, also called corticosteroids or steroids, are anti-inflammatory compounds that are synthetic copies of what the body’s adrenal glands make. When properly injected, these corticosteroids reduce the swelling, redness, heat, and pain that commonly accompany arthritis.

Traditionally, the use of glucocorticoid injections for the hip have been perceived to not work well… or at least not work as well as they do for the knee. However, the hip joint is one of the most difficult joints in the body to inject accurately.

A new study reported in Arthritis and Rheumatism (Lambert RGW, Hutchings EJ, Grace MGA, Jhangri GS, Conner-Spady B, Maksymowych WP. Steroid injection for osteoarthritis of the hip: A randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Trial. Arthritis Rheum. 2007;56:2278-2287) has demonstrated that correctly placed steroid injections can produce considerable improvement in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip.

What the researchers wanted to answer was whether the steroid was less effective because of the way it was injected. They wanted to ensure entry of the therapeutic agent into the synovial space. As a result they used fluoroscopic guidance. Fluoroscopy is a type of real time x-ray.

The investigators studied 52 symptomatic patients with hip OA who were randomized in a double-blind fashion to fluoroscopically guided intra-articular injection of bupivacaine (an anesthetic agent) and 40 mg triamcinolone (a type of long-acting glucocorticoid) or to bupivacaine and saline.

At 2 months, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities OA Index (WOMAC) pain scores fell by 49.2% in the active treatment group and by 2.5% in the placebo group. The WOMAC is considered the cornerstone of patient response in osteoarthritis clinical trials so that this response was critical to determining the effectiveness of the therapies.

In addition, 67.7% of the corticosteroid group showed a 20% WOMAC improvement, compared to 23.8% of the placebo group. Findings were similar for a 50% WOMAC improvement (61.3% versus 14.3%).

These differences were maintained at 3 months.

The trial confirmed that when the steroid is injected under image guidance and can be certain that the steroid is in the right place, the steroids work very well for most patients with moderately advanced or severe hip OA.

A potentially even more useful technique for localization of the hip joint is ultrasound (US). US has the advantages of being fast, of showing soft tissue as well as bone, and of having no radiation associated with it. Fluoroscopy has comparatively much radiation exposure both to the patient as well as to the physician doing the injection.

In our clinic we use US as opposed to fluoroscopy. In any event, though, one or the other should be used to ensure proper placement of the needle.

Cortisone injection into the hip is also a procedure that should be done using sterile techniques.

In patients who respond to corticosteroid injections, these can be repeated as often as three times per year. Another therapeutic option is injection of viscosupplements into the hip. These are gel-like lubricants that also help reduce pain and allow the joint to glide better. Examples of these are compounds such as Supartz, Hyalgan, and Synvisc. In patients who are not considered surgical candidates or who do not want surgery, this is a viable option to consider.

Taking care of your eyes and bones

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

Tired eyes and backache are two common health woes of office workers.

These problems normally arise from poor diet. Therefore, to solve the problems, you need to change your diet ie choosing food that can protect your eyes, and provide enough calcium for your body.

To keep eyes healthy, Vitamin A and beta carotene are the two essential nutrients needed. Carrots are an excellent source of both Vitamin A and beta carotene.

Research has shown that high intakes of beta carotene may help to protect against damage caused by free radicals. The body converts beta carotene into vitamin A which is needed for healthy vision as well as the maintenance of mucous membranes.

Other sources of beta carotene include tomato, spinach, apricot and red sweet potatoes which are further analysed below.

The level of Vitamin C in your eyes is much higher than in your bloodstreams. However, this level decreases along with age. Vitamin C protects the eyes by reducing ultra violet damage. It acts to protect the lens from oxidative damage and protect enzymes within the lens by removing oxidation-damaged proteins. As a result, deficiency in Vitamin C may lead to the formation of cataracts.

As your body does not store vitamin C for long, it is important to replenish it by eating lots of vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables.

As a guide, you should include the following foods which are essential for the healthy of your eyes:

1.Carrots contain more sugar than any other vegetables, and as mentioned above, abundant supply of beta-carotene which is good for your eyes as well as your skin.

2.Spinach contains protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, phosphorus, iron, beta-carotene, riboflavin etc.

3.Tomatoes are a good source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, potassium and organic acid. Because of their acidic nature, they protect the vitamin C from damage or lost during high heat while cooking, thereby retaining much of the important vitamin C.

4.Wolfberry has high concentration of beta-carotene, vitamins A, B1, B2, C, calcium, iron etc. One very simple but nourishing drink is the wolfberry-chrysanthemums tea which is good for both your vision and liver.

5.Green peppers are rated the highest source of Vitamin C among the vegetables. They are also a rich source of fiber, calcium, phosphorus, iron and sugar.

6.Apricots are high in vitamin C, A, B1 & B2, sugar, protein, fats, inorganic salt, thus are considered to be nutritious fruits.

7.Chinese dates contain 14 amino acids that your body needs and the vitamins are higher than that found in apples and bananas.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body. Of the body's total calcium, about 99% is in the bones and teeth where it functions to support their structure. The remaining 1% is present throughout your body in blood, tissues and fluids between the cells.

You need calcium for muscle contraction, blood vessel contraction and expansion, blood clotting, the secretion of hormones and enzymes, and sending messages through the nervous system.

Your body maintains a constant level of calcium in body fluid and tissues so that your vital body processes function efficiently. If you suffer from calcium deficiency, you are at risk of developing osteoporosis. This involves loss of calcium from the bones and reduced bone density which causes bones to be brittle and liable to fracture.

Bone loss occurs with age in all individuals. But the loss rate usually speeds up after 35-40 years and involves the shrinking of the skeleton. Bone loss is greatest in women following the menopause. This is due to reduced levels of the hormone - estrogen. Postmenopausal women are particularly at risk from osteoporosis.

Doctors' advice is to start storing up calcium in your body since infancy so that you are able to delay the inevitable gradual loss of bone loss in your later years.

If you have not been doing so, now it's time to start the calcium buildup. The risk of osteoporosis may be altered by factors other than diet. Lack of exercise, being underweight, smoking and alcohol can all increase the risk.

Vitamin D is needed for absorption of dietary calcium. You can obtain Vitamin D from food and when your skin is exposed to sunlight. Thus, adequate vitamin D from food intake and sun exposure is essential for bone health.

Despite the goodness of calcium, excess calcium can be harmful to health. Too much in the blood can cause nausea, vomiting and calcium deposition in the heart and kidneys. This usually results from excessive doses of vitamin D and can be fatal in infants.

Some super calcium-rich foods are:

1.Milk is best known for its high calcium content, however, many people cannot digest the lactose in milk (lactose intolerance) resulting in nausea, bloating, gas, abdominal cramping, diarrhea within two hours after milk is consumed.

2.For those who are lacto-intolerant and therefore cannot drink milk, the next best alternative is to take soybeans or its related products. Not only are soy beans high in calcium, they are also rich in lysine and iron which are readily absorbed by our bodies.

Lysine is classified as one of the nine "essential" amino acids that the body needs for growth and tissue repair and has to get from outside source ie the body can't produce lysine on its own. A 150g of tofu contains at least 500 gm of calcium.

3.Black sesame seeds are an extremely good source of calcium; studies have shown that one gram of seeds contains approximately 85 milligrams of calcium. Black sesame seeds also have high amounts of protein, phosphorous, iron and magnesium.

They are also said to cure constipation by regulating bowel movements. Some Chinese sinsehs also believe black sesame seeds can nourish our hair in keeping them looking rich and dark.

4.Broccoli is chosen for its rich vitamin A, calcium, vitamin B, vitamin C, folate, iron, beta carotene, magnesium, potassium and zinc. The darker colours of the florets, such as blue-green and purple-green contain more beta carotene and vitamin C than those with lighter greens.

5.Celery contains proteins and several other active compounds that promote health, including phalides, which may help to lower cholesterol, and courmarins, that may help to prevent cancer.

It is also a good source of calcium and phosphorus, therefore it helps to stabilize and protect blood vessels walls.

6.There's iodine, calcium, protein, vitamin A, B and minerals in seaweed. It helps to rid of the cholesterol in blood vessels, thereby preventing the vessels from clotting.
Tired eyes and backaches are two common discomfort faced by office workers today. Find out how a change in diet can improve your situation.
