Lyme Disease - Prevention and Post-Infection Care

ป้ายกำกับ:

by Warren Starnes

The primary culprit of lyme disease are ticks that can be found almost anywhere. If you have pets for instance, it is difficult not to have ticks flying and crawling into your furniture and even your clothes.

It is essential therefore to keep your pets clean and free from ticks. Additionally, the tick species that are susceptible to these bacteria - called deer tick - are parasitic thus they need a host to survive. Typically, the hosts would include, aside from your pets, deer, rodents and other small furry and warm blooded animals.

In more rural areas with abundance in the deer population, positive data has been gathered on the utilization of guinea fowls as a way to control deer tick. Domesticated guinea fowls have quite a large appetite for the critters and may be the most natural way that the growth in the population of ticks in an area can be kept in check. Additionally, chemical-based pest control methods are also used to eradicate deer tick. In some areas, there is also an increasing demand to decrease the population of deer - the main hosts that these bacteria-carrying ticks depend on. Reproduction of this critter normally happens successfully through a host white tailed deer.

Aside from Lyme disease, there are other diseases that can be caused by the deer tick and the eradication of the ticks would be tantamount to successful prevention of these ailments. A vaccine has also been added to the preventive measures that can help stop Lyme disease from occurring. This recombinant vaccine was developed by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline. This has a hundred percent chance of eradicating the risk for borreliosis in children and about seventy percent in adults. As with other vaccines, this recombinant vaccine can produce slight adverse side effects, but these are typically mild.

Treating Chickenpox

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Naomi West

When you are a child there are definite health conditions that just cannot be averted. At least once you experienced the cold, flu, and of course the chickenpox. Anyone who has ever received the chickenpox can verify how nerve-racking this medical condition is. We almost wish that our children will never have to go through it - but it appears necessary.

Chickenpox is also referred to as varicella and is one of the most exceedingly transmissible infections. It will usually bear upon children from the ages of 5 to 10 - but it is possible for older minors to be touched if they have never had it before. In most cases people who had chickenpox as minors will be unresponsive to it in the future.

Yet, there are particular cases in which a person’s immune system was not able to take away the chickenpox virus completely from the body. It is able to do this by hiding out on the skin sensory nerve cells where the immune system is not able to detect it. When the virus is released and travels the whole of the skin nerve fiber it will make a very disagreeable rash known as shingles. This is a disease that usually only affects adults.

The chickenpox infection can be spread through directly impacting somebody who is infected or through respiratory droplets from the infected person sneezing or coughing. Research shows that 90% of people who are exposed will develop the infection. It may take up to 14 days for the symptoms to display themselves.

The infection will cause a rash and small blisters that are loaded with liquid that will break open and then scab over. Symptoms of chickenpox include; fever, itchiness, headache, dry cough, discomfort, loss of appetite, and stomach pains.

Most people believe that the chickenpox vaccine will help to protect their kid from ever having this infection. However, it helps to lessen the symptoms and gears up their immune system so that when it does contract the virus it can drive it out easily and quickly.

The majority of kids who have chickenpox are able to be treated within their home. There are several different treatments that will help to not only treat the infection - but also relieve some uncomfortableness from your child.

In order to relieve the pain and itchiness from the blisters you can apply a cold compress and gently place it on the worst parts of their bodies. Calamine lotion should be placed on each blister to help it heal quicker and relieve the itching. Never use lotions that are made with benadryl.

Cool water baths with baking soda should be given to your kid every four hours. This will serve to keep them from scratching by assuaging the itch. You can also apply Aveeno oatmeal bath in place of baking soda.

In little youngsters you should make them wear mittens to keep them from scrubbing the blisters. Older children should trim their nails down. Rubbing the blisters can cause infection and prolong the healing process. Any fever should be treated with ibuprofen or Tylenol. Make sure that the medicine you apply does not contain any aspirin because this could cause Reye syndrome.

Some children may have blisters inside of their mouth. This can make it very difficult for them to drink or eat anything. You need to make sure that they drink or else they will become dehydrated. Try giving them milk shakes and smoothies to make it easier.

Many parents will seek the Chickenpox Vaccine to help their child deal with this infection and heal faster than normal. Doctone has more information on ways to help your children through different medical conditions.

Sarcopenia - A Disease Coming Out From The Shadows

ป้ายกำกับ:

By: Gen Wright

The evidence is out there, two out of three adults are obese or overweight, a ratio that has been rising for decades. Part of the reason for this is a new kid on the block called Sarcopenia. This is the premature loss of muscle mass and strength due to insufficient physical activity and sedentary lifestyles. This condition accelerates obesity and causes massive physical disability to older adults.

The effect of the combination of these two diseases - obesity and sarcopenia is devastating. Obesity causes and/or complicates many other deadly diseases - such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Due to this cruel situation many people who are in their 50's and older have become highly dependent upon others to help them dress, feed themselves, bathe, clean their homes, and walk. These men and women are robbed of their health, mobility and independence and therefore their quality of life.

The sort of care required by these people to function at a most basic level doesn't come cheap. The extensive medical services that will be needed in the future to care for this epidemic of incapacitated aging adults will be unaffordable to even the richest nations in the world. It is well know that both of these diseases are preventable, how on earth could we have allowed ourselves to become so severely unhealthy?

Many people have been waiting for some miracle drug or scientific breakthrough to save their health, but this option could never enable us to attain the high level of good health we all desire. Perhaps more tellingly sarcopenia's proven antidote - strength training - will never make a cent for a pharmaceutical company. Unlike the billions of dollars poured into development for drugs to treat osteoporosis, this is yet to happen with sarcopenia.

The solutions for both of these disabling conditions are very simple, regular, vigorous exercise that includes strength training and to eat more nutritious foods than we do at present. Unfortunately the majority of people are not willing to take these two steps that would the reverse the dramatic impact sarcopenia and obesity has on people's lives.

The good news is, all health-conscious adults especially those past 40 years of age can take immediate steps to implement a program that will greatly lessen their risk for sarcopenia. Strength training is the key to prevention and is defined as the use of resistance training machines or free weights that involves a progressive increase in resistance against which a muscle generates force.

By building and maintaining our strength and health continuously throughout our lives, each of us would be doing our best to conquer the preventable disease of sarcopenia. This would ensure we will be able to take care of ourselves to live independently in our own homes for as long as possible. The increased quality of life would give us additional years of freedom to enjoy.

How to Protect Yourself from Malignant Melanoma - A Guide

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Jake Bradley

Melanoma is known to be a fatal sort of skin cancer in which the affected person?s skin does not grow as expected. The extra abnormally grown cells might lead to a tumor or mass of skin. A skin tumor is not malignant or cancerous if it does not harm the organs and tissues close to the skin layers. Melanoma is primarily caused due to exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun. This UV radiation hurt our DNA, and hence melanoma can be a genetic disorder too. DNA is the genetic material in our body, so once a person is suffering from melanoma he is likely to pass it on to the next generations too.

The first and foremost way to stay away from melanoma is to check if there are any of your ancestors who had melanoma. If you do have family history, regular skin check-up along with the preventive measures mentioned below must be undertaken to avoid the life-threatening disease. The fact that some of your relative was a patient of melanoma implies that you might have the damaged gene too. So it is better to be careful about such things.

For preventing melanoma, we must ensure that we limit our sun exposure to the minimum. Because a human being receives approximately eighty percent of his total life?s sun exposure till the age of 18, this must be started quite early in childhood. Those people who need to regularly work outdoors such as workers or others who spend lot of time in outdoor activities under the sun have greater sun exposure than those indoors. But people staying indoors should take care and not venture out continuously in the sun for long periods while on a vacation to avoid the risk of melanoma. This applies to people who wish to take a sun bath or get their skin tanned on a beach, as it may prove harmful for them.

Though it is easier said than done, we cannot totally block out sun exposure from our routine. Try to keep your child away from getting sunburn as it can be a contributing factor for melanoma. Direct and reflected sunlight should be avoided too. When you are going out in the sun, cover the exposed parts of your body to reduce the effect of UV rays of the sun. Lastly, another tip is to wear a good sunscreen and then step out of the house.

Do you need to go out in the sun often? It would be interesting to note that excessive exposure to the sun can cause a type of skin cancer called malignant melanoma. Find out how to prevent melanoma and be rest assured.

Cause of Macular Degeneration - Act Now to Prevent AMD

ป้ายกำกับ:

By Sturat Mitchel

Here are some of the common causes:

1. Smoking

If we were to name the number one preventable cause of macular degeneration it would be smoking. Smoking increases the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by nearly 50 percent, reveals a recent analysis of about 3,500 Beaver Dam, Wis. residents undergoing eye-related studies since 1987. The finding was reported in the January 2008 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.

2. High Blood Pressure

The blood vessels that supply blood to your eyes, and in particular, the retina are very small and delicate. Like other blood vessels, they are damaged by high blood pressure. This can result in the blood vessels leaking which leads to fluid building up in the choroid, a layer of blood vessels that lie under the retina.

High blood pressure may be more of a significant risk factor for developing wet age related macular degeneration, the kind that causes significant vision loss.

3. Medications

There are certain medications that may have adverse effects on the eye. In the book The First Year - Age Related Macular Degeneration by Daniel L. Roberts, there is an entire appendix listing these different prescription medications and their side effects.

4. Family History

Macular Degeneration runs in families. My husband's father and all of his siblings have AMD. This awareness is helpful to me as a wife and a R.N. to begin now to protect the eyes of my husband and to be proactive in trying to prevent it - for him and our adult children.

5. Sunlight

Surprisingly, not all studies confirm that ultraviolet light is a risk factor for macular degeneration (although it is for the development of cataracts). However bluelight has been shown to cause damage to our retinas and is one of the causes of macular degeneration.

6. Poor Diet

A diet low in dark green leafy vegetables and antioxidant rich foods, plus too high in omega-6 fatty acids increases your risk of AMD.

7. Exposure to Pesticides, Car Exhaust and Household Cleaners

Most of you have heard the term "free radicals." And you may also know that free radicals cause damage to our bodies.

When we are exposed to toxins in our environment - the air we breathe, the water we drink or the food we eat - our body produces free radicals. These free radicals then cause damage to our bodies and to our eyes as well.

Now that you know some of the main causes of macular degeneration, wouldn't you like to know what you can do to prevent this number one cause of vision loss in those over the age of 65?

If so go to http://www.WebRN-MacularDegeneration.com/macular-degeneration-prevention.html

Are you one of 200 million people around the world, who is suffering from excessive sweating? If yes then you need to read this article. Sweating or perspiration is completely natural process produced by the body. The excessive body heat perspires through millions of micro sweat glands covering our skin. They are not arranged equally over our body, but there are areas where concentration is higher. Such as, parts of palms, feet and underarms. Process of sweating is completely natural.

But when it comes to excessive perspiration we are dealing with hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is a condition, for which doctors haven't found specifically what causes it. Their best guess is that it has to do with our hypothalamus. Hypothalamus is a part of our brain defined for controlling our body heat.

The hyperhidrosis affects both sexes equally and it can start in adolescence or even sooner. The patients are usually complaining over sweating and feel anxious if anyone notices what problem they are having. But what I discovered is a truly mind-blowing. I found a cure with a zero help of my doctor. I cured my condition within 4 days of testing the cure. It worked on me, why shouldn't it work on you? Are you willing to try it?

So STOP wasting your time and energy with remedies that never work. I can show you how to use a remedy that actually works for free to get rid of excessive underarm sweating. Click here to stop underarm sweating in just 4 days.

What Are Functional Ovarian Cysts and Should I Worry About Them?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Susan Anderson

Most women are more than familiar with the term "ovarian cyst", even though they may never may have had a full understanding of what these things actually are. Usually when any type of cysts are discussed, the thoughts of large cancerous tumors immediately fill the minds of those who have never experienced them. Fortunately, that is not the case in the majority of cysts.

There are ovarian cysts which develop on the ovary during the ovulation cycle which are basically a sac around a maturing egg. Once the egg gets released, the sac should simply disappear causing no problems. There are instances however when the sac will hold the egg and prevent it from being released. When this happens, the cyst will fill with fluid to varying degrees. This type of cyst is known as a follicular cyst.

It is also possible for the sac which enclosed the maturing egg to release its contents, then close back up on its own and again fill with fluid. The result is an ovarian cyst which is referred to as luteal cyst, which can be vary widely in size.

The good news is that these cysts usually cause no symptoms and simply go away on their own. They can cause problems if they become too large, as they are then susceptible to induce problems by twisting or rupturing. Either of these two circumstances can lead to the cyst bleeding and causing quite a bit of pain.

Some of the symptoms of a problem ovarian cyst are a delayed menstrual cycle, unexplained pain during intercourse, bleeding when not on your period and pelvic pain during your period. The pain of ruptured cysts can be significant, so if you have these symptoms, please consult your physician to get a pelvic exam and possible ultrasound performed to verify the presence of ovarian cysts.
