Lyme Disease - Prevention and Post-Infection Care
by Warren Starnes
The primary culprit of lyme disease are ticks that can be found almost anywhere. If you have pets for instance, it is difficult not to have ticks flying and crawling into your furniture and even your clothes.
It is essential therefore to keep your pets clean and free from ticks. Additionally, the tick species that are susceptible to these bacteria - called deer tick - are parasitic thus they need a host to survive. Typically, the hosts would include, aside from your pets, deer, rodents and other small furry and warm blooded animals.
In more rural areas with abundance in the deer population, positive data has been gathered on the utilization of guinea fowls as a way to control deer tick. Domesticated guinea fowls have quite a large appetite for the critters and may be the most natural way that the growth in the population of ticks in an area can be kept in check. Additionally, chemical-based pest control methods are also used to eradicate deer tick. In some areas, there is also an increasing demand to decrease the population of deer - the main hosts that these bacteria-carrying ticks depend on. Reproduction of this critter normally happens successfully through a host white tailed deer.
Aside from Lyme disease, there are other diseases that can be caused by the deer tick and the eradication of the ticks would be tantamount to successful prevention of these ailments. A vaccine has also been added to the preventive measures that can help stop Lyme disease from occurring. This recombinant vaccine was developed by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline. This has a hundred percent chance of eradicating the risk for borreliosis in children and about seventy percent in adults. As with other vaccines, this recombinant vaccine can produce slight adverse side effects, but these are typically mild.

Treating Chickenpox
By: Naomi West
When you are a child there are definite health conditions that just cannot be averted. At least once you experienced the cold, flu, and of course the chickenpox. Anyone who has ever received the chickenpox can verify how nerve-racking this medical condition is. We almost wish that our children will never have to go through it - but it appears necessary.
Chickenpox is also referred to as varicella and is one of the most exceedingly transmissible infections. It will usually bear upon children from the ages of 5 to 10 - but it is possible for older minors to be touched if they have never had it before. In most cases people who had chickenpox as minors will be unresponsive to it in the future.
Yet, there are particular cases in which a person’s immune system was not able to take away the chickenpox virus completely from the body. It is able to do this by hiding out on the skin sensory nerve cells where the immune system is not able to detect it. When the virus is released and travels the whole of the skin nerve fiber it will make a very disagreeable rash known as shingles. This is a disease that usually only affects adults.
The chickenpox infection can be spread through directly impacting somebody who is infected or through respiratory droplets from the infected person sneezing or coughing. Research shows that 90% of people who are exposed will develop the infection. It may take up to 14 days for the symptoms to display themselves.
The infection will cause a rash and small blisters that are loaded with liquid that will break open and then scab over. Symptoms of chickenpox include; fever, itchiness, headache, dry cough, discomfort, loss of appetite, and stomach pains.
Most people believe that the chickenpox vaccine will help to protect their kid from ever having this infection. However, it helps to lessen the symptoms and gears up their immune system so that when it does contract the virus it can drive it out easily and quickly.
The majority of kids who have chickenpox are able to be treated within their home. There are several different treatments that will help to not only treat the infection - but also relieve some uncomfortableness from your child.
In order to relieve the pain and itchiness from the blisters you can apply a cold compress and gently place it on the worst parts of their bodies. Calamine lotion should be placed on each blister to help it heal quicker and relieve the itching. Never use lotions that are made with benadryl.
Cool water baths with baking soda should be given to your kid every four hours. This will serve to keep them from scratching by assuaging the itch. You can also apply Aveeno oatmeal bath in place of baking soda.
In little youngsters you should make them wear mittens to keep them from scrubbing the blisters. Older children should trim their nails down. Rubbing the blisters can cause infection and prolong the healing process. Any fever should be treated with ibuprofen or Tylenol. Make sure that the medicine you apply does not contain any aspirin because this could cause Reye syndrome.
Some children may have blisters inside of their mouth. This can make it very difficult for them to drink or eat anything. You need to make sure that they drink or else they will become dehydrated. Try giving them milk shakes and smoothies to make it easier.
Many parents will seek the Chickenpox Vaccine to help their child deal with this infection and heal faster than normal. Doctone has more information on ways to help your children through different medical conditions.

Sarcopenia - A Disease Coming Out From The Shadows
By: Gen Wright
The evidence is out there, two out of three adults are obese or overweight, a ratio that has been rising for decades. Part of the reason for this is a new kid on the block called Sarcopenia. This is the premature loss of muscle mass and strength due to insufficient physical activity and sedentary lifestyles. This condition accelerates obesity and causes massive physical disability to older adults.
The effect of the combination of these two diseases - obesity and sarcopenia is devastating. Obesity causes and/or complicates many other deadly diseases - such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
Due to this cruel situation many people who are in their 50's and older have become highly dependent upon others to help them dress, feed themselves, bathe, clean their homes, and walk. These men and women are robbed of their health, mobility and independence and therefore their quality of life.
The sort of care required by these people to function at a most basic level doesn't come cheap. The extensive medical services that will be needed in the future to care for this epidemic of incapacitated aging adults will be unaffordable to even the richest nations in the world. It is well know that both of these diseases are preventable, how on earth could we have allowed ourselves to become so severely unhealthy?
Many people have been waiting for some miracle drug or scientific breakthrough to save their health, but this option could never enable us to attain the high level of good health we all desire. Perhaps more tellingly sarcopenia's proven antidote - strength training - will never make a cent for a pharmaceutical company. Unlike the billions of dollars poured into development for drugs to treat osteoporosis, this is yet to happen with sarcopenia.
The solutions for both of these disabling conditions are very simple, regular, vigorous exercise that includes strength training and to eat more nutritious foods than we do at present. Unfortunately the majority of people are not willing to take these two steps that would the reverse the dramatic impact sarcopenia and obesity has on people's lives.
The good news is, all health-conscious adults especially those past 40 years of age can take immediate steps to implement a program that will greatly lessen their risk for sarcopenia. Strength training is the key to prevention and is defined as the use of resistance training machines or free weights that involves a progressive increase in resistance against which a muscle generates force.
By building and maintaining our strength and health continuously throughout our lives, each of us would be doing our best to conquer the preventable disease of sarcopenia. This would ensure we will be able to take care of ourselves to live independently in our own homes for as long as possible. The increased quality of life would give us additional years of freedom to enjoy.
