How To Prevent Swine Influenza ?
by Raymond Koen
What is Swine Influenza?
Swine influenza (Swine flu) refers to influenza cases that are caused by Orthomyxoviruses endemic to populations of pigs. The viruses are referred to as Swine influenza viruses (SIV). The distinction is not based on phylogeny. SIV strains isolated to date have been classified either as Influenzavirus C or one of the various subtypes of the genus Influenzavirus A.
Swine Influenza, unlike bird flu, is able to pass from human to human contact.
Influenza A virus subtypes H1N1, H1N2, H3N1 and H3N2 are all known to cause SIV infections. Also recently H2N3.[5]
Swine flu is usually diagnosed only in pigs or people in regular contact with them. Swine Flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza. Swine flu is caused by a virus similar to the regular flu virus that circulates in people every year, but is a strain that is typically found only in pigs or in people who have direct contact with pigs. Swine flu is an infamous disease in public health circles.
Is Swine Influenza a Threats to Human?
See the video below may give you some ideas on the urgency of this matters:
Although immunity to swine H1N1 viruses is low in the human population, ahigh proportion of persons occupationally exposed to pigs (such as pig farmers or pig veterinarians) have been shown in several studies to have antibody evidence of prior swine H1N1 flu infection. And, for swine H1N1 viruses, only rare person-to-person transmission has been documented in the past. At least 854 people have been sickened and 62 have died from flu-like illness in Mexico City and two other locations in Mexico, prompting fears of an outbreak of swine flu, officials said today. An unusual strain of swine flu has been detected among victims of a large outbreak of a severe respiratory illness in Mexico, prompting global health officials, fearful of a potential flu pandemic, to scramble yesterday to try to contain the virus. Mexico City on alert over swine flu outbreak CNN.
How to Prevent Swine Flu?
Citizens can do a lot to help prevent swine flu virus from spreading. More education and awareness is needed. Persuade your family and friends to follow some reasonable guidelines. Do not panic, throughout history many small outbreaks have not turned into pandemics.
Stay at home and avoid exposure to open air, otherwise you should wearing a swine flu masks to protect yourself from virus spreading in the public places. As in Mexico, while bars and nightclubs filled up as usual, even some teenagers were dancing with surgical masks on. Face masks mighthelp reduce transmission in swine influenza pandemic.
Plenty of sleep, rest, and good food might also help to increase your immunity.

A Virus Made Me Fat?

by: Abigail Richards
Research has finally proven what we have wanted to hear for years. It isn’t junk food that makes you fat or laying on the couch or the lack of exercise-no it is a virus?
Researchers are claiming that a virus is the cause of obesity. Dr. Magdalena Pasarica, M.D., Ph.D., of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center has an explanation as to why obesity affects many people worldwide. She said it’s a contagious virus called human adenovirus or Ad-36.
Apparently AD-36 induces storage fat. She does say that they do not believe the virus is the only cause of obesity, but studies show stronger evidence that the virus could be the cause.
Studies are still being completed since not all people with the virus develop obesity. “We would ultimately like to identify the underlying factors that predispose some obese people to develop this virus and eventually find a way to treat it," Pasarica said.
The research was conducted by obtaining adult stem cells from fat tissue of people who had undergone liposuction. Stem cells are a type of master cell that exist in an immature form and give rise to more specialized cells.
After about a week of growth in tissue culture, most of the virus-infected adult stem cells developed into fat cells, whereas the non-infected stem cells did not, the researchers say.
Previous studies have shown AD-36 increased fat in chickens, mice and other nonhuman animals.
It is said that the virus then tells the cells to produce a lot of lipids, or fats. The result: bigger fat cells — and more of them. Those infected with the virus are advised to double their exercise and dieting efforts.
So I am thinking it had to come from that little boy I kissed on the playground in kindergarten. It was downhill from there. Well what is done is done. I guess I will die an infected obese person. . . now where did I put those potato chips?

One Of A Hundred People Who Get West Nile Virus Get Very Very Sick
One out of a hundred or more specifically one out of a hundred and ten people who get West Nile Virus Disease from mosquitoes get very very sick with neurological brain damage.
West Nile Virus is a virus that infects human beings, birds, horses and mosquitoes. West Nile Virus has been found in 47 states in the United States. Prevention is always the best method of attack.
The best way to avoid infection with West Nile Virus is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and neighborhood. First get rid of standing water in ponds, birdbaths, pails, wading pools and old tires where mosquitoes can and do breed prolifically. Local hardware stores carry products to keep those deadly mosquitoes from breeding in small ponds. Next make sure that you repair any tears in windows and porch as well as patio screens. It is best to stay indoors during dawn, dusk and the early evening hours when mosquito populations abound. If you do go outdoors doing these high risk mosquito time period it is best to wear socks and shoes, long pants – not shorts no matter what heat and a long sleeved – not short sleeved shirts. Loose fitting, rather than tight fitting clothing, and light rather than dark colored clothing is always best.
If you do have to go outdoors then use an insect repellant that contains DEEY. Apply the DEET mosquito repellent liberally according to directions on the label of the mosquito repellant product. If you have to apply mosquito repellant to children best to contact your doctor or medical professional.
West Nile Virus is most often spread by mosquitoes; Mosquitoes become infected by biting birds that carry the West Nile Virus. People can get the West Nile Virus when an infected mosquito bites them. All it takes is a bit from one solitary mosquito. This bite of misfortune most often happens in the warm weather months of spring, summer and fall. Luckily you cannot get West Nile Virus transferred from your pet dog or cat or another person.
If a 140 people are infected by West Nile Virus 110 people may have the disease and yet be ok and have no effects. Thirty people will get mildly sick. One person with serious Western Nile Disease will get very very sick with meningitis or encephalitis- very serious brain swelling disorders.
About 20 percent of people develop a mild infection called West Nile fever. Common signs and symptoms of West Nile fever include:
• Skin rash
• Headache
• Fever
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Backache
• Muscle aches
• Lack of appetite
• Swollen lymph glands
West Nile Fever usually lasts only three to six days.
However some people continue on after their West Nile Fever with very serious encephalitis or menaginitis. The symptoms they will encounter can include:
• High fever
• Severe headache
• Stiff neck
• Disorientation or confusion
• Stupor or coma
• Tremors or muscle jerking
• Signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease
• Lack of coordination
• Convulsions
• Pain
• Partial paralysis or sudden weakness
The brain encephalitis and meningitis can go on for weeks and weeks. Paralysis can be permanent.
West Nile Virus has been found in fully 47 states of the United States. The worst area for West Nile Virus incidence is California followed by Arizona, Colorado and Texas. West Nile Virus is not a joke. Be alert for scores of dead birds in your area. One bite from a West Nile Fever infected mosquito can change your life for the worst. Protect yourself.

Shingles Symptoms - and Treatments
By Ivan Hince
I can remember quite clearly some forty years ago when a friend told me that her husband had Shingles, and how that he was in great pain, and covered in a terrible rash. At this point I thought nothing about it until recently I was reading an article which compared different types of pain, and Shingles was mentioned.
As I write many different articles about medical health I began to check out what caused it, and why it was ranked as one of the most painful things you can get, so I began to investigate what the symptoms were, and what treatment was available.
Shingles comes from the same virus as the well known Chickenpox which lays dormant in anyone that has had chickenpox, or that has had the chickenpox vaccine. It normally affects older people where the dormant virus travels to the nerve endings in the skin area. From there the pain starts, and often patients have described the pain as coming in extreme waves that have been likened to that of an electric shock. After this stage the rash appears, which will blister and become very painful. These blisters can be full of bacteria, and great care should be taken with cleanliness.
What causes Shingles?
Several Doctors have different ideas on the causes of Shingles, but if the truth they don’t know. Some say it can start from stress, while others relate it to Cancer, or HIV. Radiation is another possibility, and also mentioned would be that it could be that part of the skin has been damaged in some way that sets the virus off. The most likely cause in my eyes is that the immune system gets severely run down, and that the virus which is normally kept at bay by our immune system, then breaks out.
Shingles Symptoms.
The things to look out for are extreme sensitivity in the skin, which tend to have a burning sensation, and slight itching. After this stage the skin becomes painful, and if you think that you may have shingles a call to your Doctor must be made, as the sooner an antiviral medication is given the easier for the patient it will be.
Care must also be taken should the patient have a form of rash near the nose, or on any part of the face. This is most important to get immediate medical help, as if the virus reaches the eyes it can lead to impaired vision, or a complete loss of sight.
Medical care.
With Shingles the sooner you get medical care the better for the patient it will be. Pain killers are a must, along with things like Antihistamine can help with the itching. Often the Doctor will recommend creams or oils that can stop the blisters from drying out to fast, and in several articles it is believed that cold water compresses bring great relief, and keep the skin moist.
If possible avoid contact with others that have not had chickenpox, especially if that person is older, and try to wear loose clothing that doesn’t irate the skin.

Warning: Bird Flu Spreads
By: Bogdan Epureanu
The Avian Flu virus, also known as the Bird Flu virus or as H5N1, is a sub-species of the Influenza A virus which causes severe illness and death in humans and animals. Since 2003 this deadly virus has been spreading globally causing fear and panic in countries all around the world. First recognized in Vietnam, to date the virus has 291 known cases and has claimed 172 lives as well as permanently changed thousands more in 11 countries globally including China, Egypt, Indonesia, and Turkey. Most recently the British government has pledged to spend £200 ($400) million to import enough Tamiflu and Relenza to vaccinate approximately a quarter of the population against the Bird Flu.
With a 60% death rate recorded from infected patients of the H5N1 virus, it’s easy to see why being prepared for such an event is highly recommended by professionals and scientists like world-renowned virologist Robert Webster who has published an article titled "The world is teetering on the edge of a pandemic that could kill a large fraction of the human population". Webster urged for adequate resources to fight a major world threat that could kill anywhere from 5 to 150 million people and even possibly billions of lives over the course of just a few years.
The resources Webster is talking about are Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) and Relenza (Zanamivir), the only two effective antiviral drugs that are to be used in the treatment of the H5N1 Virus which causes the Bird Flu. Unfortunately for Tamiflu and Relenza patients, in order for these antivirals to be most effective they need to be administered at the early stage of infection which in turn has caused many countries to stockpile in preparation for the pandemic. This global stockpile has resulted in a major shortage for these life saving antivirals leaving many private citizens without access when these will be needed the most. Drug companies, manufacturers, and scientists are scrambling to come up with a vaccine to protect the world against the H5N1 strain of influenza, but currently Tamiflu and Relenza are the only antivirals that have shown promise in fighting the virus to date.
With the knowledge and warnings that have been provided to us it is just common sense to realize that this is a global problem and you need to be prepared. Act now to protect your family because with the current demand for these medications it may soon be too late. And we strongly believe that every family deserves equal access to Tamiflu and Relenza life saving antivirals - not just the governments who stockpile only for the health care workers and whoever they deem are suitable for treatment during a pandemic. Don't delay - protect your family today.

Oral Herpes
By Kent Pinkerton
Herpes, both oral and genital, is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus. While oral Herpes is caused by HSV-1, genital Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the HSV-2 virus.
The common symptoms for both oral and genital herpes include the appearance of sores on the body. These sores appear on different parts of the body. In case of genital herpes, they appear on the genital area. In oral herpes, they appear on or in the mouth.
Most people infected with oral herpes are not even aware of the fact that they have the disease. This is because people usually don't associate these blisters or soars with herpes. These soars usually last for a few weeks and then gradually dry out.
Oral herpes is an infectious disease that can spread by touching, kissing, or sexual contact. It is prominent amongst children because they pass on the disease to the non-infected children also.
Herpes can also be passed from adults to children through a simple good night kiss. Oral herpes is usually not frightening and can be controlled by treatment and preventive measures, but for a person with an impaired nervous system, it can prove to be fatal.
People can take some precautions to prevent further spread of herpes. Frequent and washing and avoiding touching infected areas are two good ideas. Also, remember that you need to take precautions with infants because their nervous systems may not be able to cope with the pressure of the disease. Adults with babies should avoid cuddling or touching them till the symptoms subside.
Oral herpes can be painful if people don't take the necessary preventive measures. One measure is to take anti-viral tablets. Generally, herpes recurrence will not happen if you take medication. The other thing is people should try to remain stress free because higher stress levels prolong the disease.
