Are Your Canker Sores Painful?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by: Taylor Clarke

Nearly everyone has experienced the discomfort of canker sores at some point in their life and understand how these little sores can be a source of great pain. While doctors and dentists remain puzzled over the exact cause of canker sores it is commonly believed they are brought about by a vitamin deficiency, stress or allergies.

Despite their miniature size, they can produce a lot of pain. Here are a few facts on canker sores:

1) They commonly appear on the inside of the mouth including on the cheeks, the inside of the lips and under the tongue.

2) While typically small red sores, they may appear with a white coating over the entire sore.

3) Some medical professionals believe the susceptibility of canker sores may be inherited, but research indicates they are not contagious.

4) They cannot be passed along by drinking from the same glass or by kissing.

There are three distinct types of canker sores including minor sores that generally last three to 14 days and deep ulcer canker sores that can last from three to six weeks. Both types will usually heal on their own once they have run their course. Possibly the worst type is the herpetiform sores which appear as small cuts close together. They are not a sign of, nor a prelude to herpes. With this type of canker sore a visit to the doctor or dentist may be needed for confirmation and treatment.

About the only thing a person can do to deal with the sores while they heal is practice good dental hygiene, including using a toothpaste containing only natural ingredients. Many types of toothpaste include irritants such as sodium lauryl sulfate that can irritate existing cankers as well as damage the lining of the mouth, increasing the possibility of them appearing.

Supplements of vitamin C and the B complex have also been shown to help in the healing process and if caused by vitamin deficiency may help prevent canker sores from forming. For severe pain, topical treatments, usually used on infants during teething can offer short-term relief from the pain. With more severe outbreaks, a doctor may also prescribe medications to help heal and prevent the spread of the sores. Be sure to follow the directions as some of these medications are formulated to be swallowed and others should be spit out once rinsing is complete.

When the mouth is afflicted with canker sores, it is advised to avoid certain foods that can irritate the lesions. Crunchy foods such as raw vegetables and chips can further aggravate the ulcer-like formations and spicy foods can also cause unnecessary irritation during periods of canker sore outbreaks. If a person chews gum frequently, it is only a matter of time that they will inadvertently bite the inside of their cheek and if it happens to hit a canker sore, the pain will be dramatic.

The best course of action for canker sores is taking steps to prevent them from forming. Using all natural dental products such as ones containing baking soda with good dental hygiene can help keep the mouth clean and avoiding certain foods. While there is no guarantee that sores will not reappear, practicing prevention may reduce the chances of the canker sores from appearing.

That Snake In The Grass May Be Your Best Hope For Stroke

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

That snake in the grass may well help someone you lose with a stroke related disorder.

Stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurological damage or even death if not promptly diagnosed and treated. It is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States and industrialized European nations. It is predicted that stroke will soon become the leading cause of death worldwide.

The symptoms of stroke can be quite heterogeneous, and patients with the same cause of stroke can have widely differing handicaps. Conversely, patients with the same clinical handicap can in fact have different underlying causes.

Called ancrod, the fibrinogen depleting drug is an enzyme derived from the venom of the Malayan pit viper snake. This pit viper snake venom has been found to be a most potent natural anticoagulant. It is crucial that the drug which also acts to break up the clot and reduce blood viscosity be administered promptly within hours of the onset of the stroke.

The cause of stroke is an interruption in the blood supply, with a resulting depletion of oxygen and glucose in the affected area. This immediately reduces or abolishes neuronal function, and also initiates an ischemic cascade which causes neurons to die or be seriously damaged, further impairing brain function.

Risk factors for stroke include advanced age, hypertension (high blood pressure), previous stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack), diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, atrial fibrillation, migraine with aura, and thrombophilia. In clinical practice blood pressure is the most important modifiable risk factor of stroke, however many other risk factors, such as cigarette smoking cessation and treatment of atrial fibrillation with anticoagulant drugs, are important.

If a person has a stroke what occurs is that a blood vessel to the brain becomes blocked or non functional. Blood cannot flow through the blood vessel to the area of the brain it serves. The blood vessel may be narrowed by atherosclerosis (cholesterol crystals in the wall of the blood vessel), the artery may be blocked by a blood clot, it may be damaged or the heart just cannot pump enough blood into the artery. The snake venom may well help in the treatment of acute ischemic strokes.

Ancrod differs from previous drugs in that the current therapies must be administered within three hours or less. In real life, and with real life logistics, as well as travel and treatment admission times, often the stroke patient is limited with options for therapy by the time they reach their treatment options. The medications derived from this snake venom can be given up to six hours opening up a whole new therapeutic window.

Currently studies are underway at a number of major medical centers to evaluate stroke trials with this medication derived from the snake venom for the treatment of acute strokes. What will be looked at is if the drug is given within six hours of a person having a sudden ischemic stroke will those patients suffer less damage related to the stroke or not. That is will the snake venom drug help people to the extent that stroke victims given the Ancrod snake venom derived drug have a lower level of disability and a higher level of function than those who were given the drug - 90 days after the tragic event.

Who know it may well be that snake in the grass that best helps out your family member or friend return back to health and function after a sudden stroke attack.

That snake in the grass may well help someone you lose with a stroke related disorder. ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Cindy Heller

Majority of the men do not encounter any troubles with their prostate gland in which the dimension can be equated to that of a walnut up to the age of forty. After which troubles might arise and it can be the source of discomfort. With the multitude of tests available, the trouble can be detected early. A once a year, regular examination is necessary for middle age men to keep track of their prostate health as prostate cancer afflicted millions of men each year.

An increasing number of men are seeking alternative method of treatments over the usual allopathic treatment and herbal medicine is an effective cure for swelling and enlargement of prostate. A number of supplements are marketed as the real things and it deceive a lot of people not used to reading labels. A verification of the authenticity of the herbal products is necessary before purchasing. Nutritionists and naturopaths worldwide concur that a good dosage of vitamins is necessary in the battle of awful diseases encompassing prostate cancer, for instant vitamin C which is also a potent anti-oxidizing agent; Vitamin A, E and K in addition to minerals like Zinc, Selenium, etc.

All ingredients can be bought in their unprocessed form and with the right diets can help in the fight against prostate diseases. Prostate herbs supplements usually contain a mixture of vitamins, minerals and prostate herbs. The right herbal products can help in the deterrence against prostate cancer. Even though the prostate herbal supplement is a good cure for prostate cancer; the herbal supplements will not be able to bring to an end or turn around once it progress to the final stage. Physicians usually recommend that no one initiate self-treatment without consulting them and under their direction. It can turn up worst if experimentation is done with herbal products bought off the shelf.

The most effective method is working with the physician while you go through naturopathy treatment. Herbal medical treatments are usually reliable but be wary of fake herbal supplements that pass of as the real things in the market. Only trust the well-known brand that has existed and gain the trust of the consumer.

One of the natural forms of treatment is beta prostate. Avoid fake and duplicated beta prostate herbal supplements as it will cause more harm to your prostate diseases and choose a correct one so that you can go through thrilling wonders of original herbal beta prostate products.

Again keep your physician informed and consumed only with their approval. I'm not against the natural form of treatments but it is better to be safe than regret later. Go through the prerequisite tests before starting the course of herbal treatments as herbal products might hold back the actual results and so you might not be clear about the trouble afflicting your prostate. Keep the physicians informed of your treatment so he will be in a better position to track your progress. This is not to be trifle with as it could spell death if treated wrongly or you could be on your way to full recovery as herbal treatment could get in the way of the final prognosis, indicating as negative even though you still have cancer.

Another way to lessen the problem of prostate enlarged prostate is through a super prostate formula. As super prostate formula contains various nutrients, it is helpful to men pass the age of forty who encounter some pains from the effect of an enlarged prostate. A super prostate formula typically includes diverse ingredients and every man who is eager to consume a super prostate formula should consult their family physician.

Seek the help to gather information about the usefulness of a super prostate formula and ideas on the finest accessible on the market at present. The composition of a super prostate formula more than often includes zinc, selenium, and beta-sitosterol and it could include much other stuff too. As the composition of a super prostate formula of dissimilar products on the market is not the same, every man should be cautious to choose only those that are suitable for them. Some super prostate formula provides the same results despite fewer ingredients. As these super prostate formulas frequently vary in prices so every man must choose one within their means to decide what best for them.

Important Facts About Varicose Veins You Should Know

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by Cindy Heller

Varicose veins are the swollen, enlarged veins that appear close to the surface of the skin. They are usually dark blue or purple in color. Any vein can become varicose, but most commonly affected veins are those found in the legs and feet. This usually happen because standing and walking upright increases pressure in the veins of the lower body which causes malfunction of the veins and results in varicose veins.

Varicose Veins May Indicate More Serious Problems

Most varicose veins are not a serious condition but they may cause aching pain and in certain instances can also lead to more serious conditions. Varicose veins can also be a symptom that indicates a higher risk of other circulatory system disorders.

Different Cause of Varicose Veins You Should Know

Before seeking treatment, one needs to know what causes varicose veins. The organ that pumps blood to all parts of the body is the heart, which then requires blood vessels to transport the blood to various parts of the body as well as back to the heart.

Although arteries transport blood from the heart to all parts of the body, it is the veins that carry blood back to the heart to be re-oxygenated. These vessels work continuously throughout our lifetime, and any problem in the function of the vessels can lead to some types of diseases and can also be the cause of varicose veins.

The Causes Of Varicose Veins

Some factors that can be considered a cause of varicose veins, include heredity, hormonal abnormalities, long periods of standing or sitting, and pregnancy. Before a suitable treatment can be suggested, it is necessary to determine the cause of varicose veins.

Obesity can also be one of the causes of varicose veins. This occurs because the extra weight usually causes strain on the legs of obese people. We should always maintain average body weight to reduce the chance of getting varicose veins.

Exercising regularly is also a good idea, as it will help improve blood circulation. One simple exercise you can do regularly is walking or jogging.

Deep vein thrombosis is another cause of varicose veins which leads to the veins becoming blue or dark purple in color. Varicose veins usually occur when the valves in the veins fail because of aging or the veins losing elasticity. This cause blood to pool in the veins and become varicose.

Another cause of varicose veins is hereditary, as the risk of getting varicose veins for women with a family history of varicose veins are greater than others.

One rare cause of varicose veins is overexposure to the sun. Too much sun may cause varicose veins on our face. To reduce chances of getting varicose veins, one should limit exposure to the harmful effects of the sun, maintain body weight and healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Treatment For Varicose Veins

There are various medical and non-medical treatment available for varicose veins. If you are looking for home remedies for varicose veins, try an application of apple cider vinegar to the affected veins. This method may help to shrink the veins within a month of beginning the treatment.

Other methods are by using compression stockings, creams and lotions or surgically removing the affected veins.

Many people worry about having varicose veins, because of the ugly appearance on the skin, and also the pain and discomfort involved. You should always seek medical advice to find out what treatment options are available for your case. Your doctor is the best person to advise you on how your condition should be treated and which treatment is best for you.

Each individual case of varicose vein may be different. Always remember that what may work on someone else may not work as well on you. You must be patient as it can often take a bit of time in order for the doctor to be able to determine what the best type of treatment would be for your particular situation.

Besides discussing with your doctor, you may also want to do some research on your own and read up about all of the different forms of treatment that are available for varicose veins. By doing this, you will be able to get the picture of what you might want to ask or point out to your doctor.

Some varicose veins surgeries are considered elective cosmetic surgery so there your insurance policies may not cover expenses incurred to treat this condition. However if your condition is severe and include symptoms such as swelling and bleeding, you may be able to get the treatment expenses covered through insurance. Check this out with your insurance provider before proceeding with the treatment.

Hernia Treatment And Prevention

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Although there are many different kinds of hernia, when people speak about a hernia, they are most likely to be referring to an abdominal hernia.

About five million Americans have an abdominal hernia, according to statistics provided by the National Center for Health Statistics.

An abdominal hernia occurs when either fatty tissue or an organ in the abdomen protrudes through a weak point or tear in the muscles or tissues around it. The protrusion can be labeled either as reducible, which means it can be pushed back into the abdominal cavity and seem to disappear, or non-reducible, which means it cannot be pushed back into the abdominal cavity.

The American Medical Association says that when a non-reducible protrusion involves a portion of the intestine it is possible for it to become tightly trapped, subsequently losing its blood supply and then that section of the intestine dies. This dangerous condition, called strangulation, often requires immediate surgical repair.

A hernia may be caused by anything that creates increased pressure in your abdominal area. The most common causes of this increased pressure, from which a hernia may result, are:

• strenuous coughing;
• vomiting
• straining, particularly that resulting from constipation;
• sudden physical exertion;
• obesity;
• pregnancy.

Treatment and prevention:

The American Medical Association suggests that most people who develop a hernia should see their doctor, even if the only symptom is the visible protrusion. Depending on the location and size of the protrusion, and considering other factors including your age and general health, the doctor may recommend surgery to reduce the risk of possible strangulation in the future.

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) advises that there two basic methods of surgery:

• conventional surgery - which involves an incision in the abdomen. The protruding tissue is then either removed or pushed back into the abdomen and the abdominal wall repaired. If necessary, that section of the abdominal wall can be strengthened either by sewing surrounding muscle over it or by covering that section with a special type of mesh;

• laparoscopic surgery - which uses a long metal tube inserted through a tiny incision in the abdomen. This minimally invasive surgical procedure uses telescopes and instruments that are much smaller than normal. If this procedure is appropriate for your condition, smaller incisions will be made and post-operative abdominal tenderness may be significantly reduced. The actual operation is much the same.

Statistics from ACS report that over half a million people undergo hernia surgery each year.

If you have had hernia surgery, or if you have been fortunate enough to avoid developing a hernia to date, there are some ways you can reduce your future hernia risk. This requires you to avoid those things that contribute to the development of hernias – as outlined earlier in this article. These include:

• avoiding heavy lifting or strain;
• as smoking often leads to chronic coughing, quitting smoking can help;
• a high fiber diet combined with plenty of fluids can help avoid constipation and the consequent strain during bowel movements;
• losing weight can reduce abdominal strain.

The protrusion can be labeled either a...

Diseases Caused By Toxic Mold

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

There are a lot of diseases that are caused by toxic molds and you may not even realize that some of the molds are actually in your house. It has been said that there are over 100,000 species of mold that exists through out the world. They are tiny and thin spores that produce themselves in different locations. The spores spread through the air and the water. Insects can also transport the spores.

Toxic mold can be dangerous and sometimes fatal for those who come in contact with the mold. Mot household molds are in colors like red, green, blue, black, and brown. The only two that are toxic that is found in the household are Stachybotrys and Memnolniella molds. There are found in damp, dark, and wet places in and around the house.

Stachybortrys grow in damp environments and on materials like wallpaper, cardboard, tile, insulation, and wood. Black mold, among the worst, feeds on things that don’t have cellulose like stachybotrys. They are poisonous because they produce mycotoxin. When inhaled it is ingested by humans and then will cause many unpleasant symptoms.

You should know that mold affects a lot of people. In fact, sensitive people (those with mold allergies) will get symptoms right away. The nose will become stuffy, eyes will be irritated, and they will begin to wheeze. It will also cause fevers and loss of breath-which may cause death.

If the lungs are obstructed with cancer or a disease, you will find that it will cause an infection to the lungs and may cause death that way. Molds like black mold have been responsible for many fatal conditions like idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage. The victim’s are usually infants and those with weak immune systems. The mold will also cause headaches, lung infections, fevers, pains, diarrhea, and rashes. It will block your breathing and cause many internal infections in a human body.

The molds can be found practically anywhere in your home or on your home or near your home. Often they are in the basement, showers, corners, or anywhere water was leaked and a mold has developed. Many people practically have of the homes in the US had some type of mold infection in their home.

To get rid of the mold you may need to use a humidifier in your basement, air condition, add ventilation, tear up carpeting, repaint the walls, clean bathrooms thoroughly, and replace curtains. You may need a professional to come in and clean your home so that you can thoroughly get rid of the spores. You will also want to keep your home clean to prevent the spores from returning.

The Symptoms of HIV

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Mark Cichocki, R.N.

Remember Not to Rely On Symptoms...Get Tested

Because many people who have been infected with HIV have few or no symptoms initially, testing is the only way to know for sure if you are infected with HIV. There are, however, an assortment of symptoms that can be associated with HIV infection.

Symptoms Early After Infection - Acute HIV - In emergency departments and family practice offices, people come in with symptoms like fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, rash and diarrhea. In response to these symptoms, physicians diagnose the flu and send the patient on their way. In the majority of cases, their diagnosis proves correct. But unfortunately, a number of people with these vague, indistinct symptoms have a more serious illness than the flu; these symptoms may signal the acute stages of HIV infection.

Symptoms of the Immune System - The immune system is the body's natural defense against invading foreign agents such as viruses and bacteria.

HIV attacks the immune system, weakening it and making the body more susceptible to infection. After infection, some symptoms affect the immune system.

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, axilla, or groin (lymphadenopathy)
  • Fever / night sweats

Symptoms of the GI Tract - HIV can have a profound affect on the gastrointestinal system and nutrition. Like any virus, HIV can cause symptoms ranging from poor appetite to diarrhea. Here are some of the most common:

  • Rapid weight loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Poor appetite
  • Profound fatigue

Respiratory Symptoms - Some of the most serious symptoms of HIV involve the respiratory system. Symptoms associated with breathing and respiration usually occur later in course of the disease. Unfortunately, many people's first symptom of HIV involves the respiratory system, illustrating why HIV testing is so important. Any cough or shortness of breath could be a sign of bacterial pneumonia or pneumocystis (carinii) jiroveci pneumonia (PCP).

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry cough / productive cough

Symptoms of the Skin and Mucous Membranes - Many of the symptoms of HIV are a result of infection by other viruses, fungi or bacteria. Often, these infections involve the skin or mucous membranes (for example, inside the mouth).

  • Skin rash
  • Red, brown, pink or purple lesion on the skin - suggestive of Kaposi's sarcoma
  • White patches on the tounge, inside of the mouth, or gums - could be signs of thrush, candida, or hairy oral leukoplakia
  • Canker sores / apthous ulcers

Neurological / Emotional Symptoms - Very early on in the epidemic, experts realized that HIV affected both the physical and emotional self. Neurological and emotional symptoms of HIV can include the following.

  • Depression
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning in the feet, hands, or face. (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Confusion, weakness, or changes in level of conciousness

How Gastro Runs Its Course

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , ,

by: Ann Stewart

Gastroenteritis is a very common disease, often referred to as an upset stomach, traveler's tummy, or ‘Montezuma’s revenge. It is primarily a viral condition, i.e. not caused by bacteria.

Viral gastroenteritis is often mistakenly called stomach flu, but it is not caused by the influenza virus and it does not infect the stomach.

Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the intestines, which causes diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, and other symptoms of digestive upset.

Highly contagious, viral gastroenteritis is the second most common illness in the United States. Anyone can get viral gastroenteritis and most people recover without any complications. However, it can be serious when people cannot drink enough fluids to replace what is lost through vomiting and diarrhea, especially infants, young children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems.

The disease is spread through close contact with infected persons, either by sharing food, water or eating utensils. Outbreaks can occur in households, child care settings, schools, nursing homes, cruise ships, camps, dormitories, restaurants, and other places where people gather in groups.

Viral gastroenteritis is either sporadic or epidemic. The sporadic form is characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, fever, or a combination of these.

The epidemic version is also known as winter vomiting disease, acute infectious nonbacterial gastroenteritis, epidemic diarrhea and vomiting, epidemic collapse, and epidemic nausea and vomiting.

The influenza virus does not cause epidemic viral gastroenteritis but instead is responsible for "the flu," a systemic, febrile (causes a fever) disease that predominantly involves the respiratory tract and not the digestive tract in humans.

Many viruses and other microbes (germs) can cause gastroenteritis. Bacteria, like E-coli, do not themselves cause the illness, but their poisonous by-products can contaminate food. The viruses that cause viral gastroenteritis damage the cells in the lining of the small intestine.

At least 50% of all food-borne outbreaks of gastroenteritis can be attributed to the norovirus and rotavirus, which occur primarily in the winter.

The Norwalk and Norwalk-like viruses account for most food and waterborne outbreaks of gastroenteritis in North America.

Astroviruses and Adenovirus cause sporadic gastroenteritis in children under 4 years of age.

Insects, rodents or other animals present in areas where food is prepared may contaminate food, equipment, benches and utensils with gastroenteritis germs. The agents that cause viral gastroenteritis can also be carried in drinking water or commercial shellfish that have been contaminated by sewage runoff. Infected food handlers who don't follow proper sanitary procedures also can spread the disease in meals served in restaurants and cafeterias.

In general, the symptoms begin one to two days following infection with a virus that causes gastroenteritis and may last for one to 10 days, depending on which virus causes the illness

Treatment focuses on reducing the symptoms and preventing dehydration. Gastroenteritis will normally pass of its own accord, providing the patient is able to keep sufficiently hydrated.

Viral gastroenteritis cannot be cured with antibiotics. Replacement of fluid and electrolyte losses is the critical central element of effective treatment of acute diarrhea.

In hospitalized cases where the patient is not able to keep down any fluids, this is done intravenously.

No vaccine is available for viral gastroenteritis with the exception of a newly released rotavirus vaccine called Rotateq.

In closing, the best cure for this all too common disease is prevention! Strict hygiene measures should be standard, including disinfection of toilets after use and regular hand washing. Ensure that food is always stored in clean, sealed containers, all perishables are kept refrigerated or frozen until needed, and meats are well cooked. In many areas it is wise to boil and/or filter the water.

As many victims of this condition have either a chronic or temporary low immune system, it is of utmost importance to ensure that you keep your immune system in tip-top condition.

Remember: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Meniers Disease - Low Salt Diet Considerations

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

By Tom Beni

Meniers Disease is a disorder of the inner ear that could be related to some abnormality of the inner ear fluids. Its symptoms include vertigo, hear loss, tinnitus (loud ringing in the ear), sensation of fullness in the affected ear and even sudden falls. These attacks vary in length, intensity and frequency. And there is still no known cause for it no cure found.

There is no doubt that a low salt diet helps a lot of people who suffer from Meniers Disease. The interesting fact is that there is no full scientific explanation why is that so. It does seem that the symptoms are often controlled successfully by reducing the body’s retention of fluids through dietary changes. But before rushing into it, there are always things you should know on how to make your diet safe and effective.

Salt, or Sodium, is a natural mineral found in foods and drinks or added to them. Sodium is important in order to maintain normal blood volume and pressure and for normal function of nerves and muscles. The body has its own way of regulating sodium levels. A low salt diet should keep a low body level of sodium, but not less that what the body needs. Falling below the necessary sodium levels may damage your health. So always consult your doctor before changing your diet.

A "normal" sodium intake for adults is around 1100-3300 milligrams per day. A low intake would be 400-1000 milligrams per day. Meniers Disease patients would usually start with a diet of under 2000 milligrams per day, and decrease the amount if necessary. Compare that with the 2000mg of sodium in a single teaspoon of table salt and the fact that some foods have natural salt, and you'll realize that practicing such a diet requires considerable effort.

Always fully scrutinize the "Nutritional Information" of the foods you buy and search for those with low sodium levels. Remember that sometimes this information is based on very little serving portions, and that you need to base your shopping to the actual amount of food that you would probably eat.

Generally speaking, you should avoid salty snacks, fat milk or meat, regular canned vegetables and soups, ketchup, soy sauce and fast food. Try to focus of "healthy foods" such as fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat milk or meat, whole-grain breads, unsalted popcorn and very light salad dressing.

Water can also be an issue, especially if they are going through some sort of water softener. These softeners replace chemicals, such as calcium and magnesium, that make the water "hard", usually with sodium that soften the water. In some cases, drinking 2 liters of this kind of water would cost you more that half your limit sodium intake!

Here are some more tips to help you ease into your Meniers Disease low salt diet:
* If you find it hard to stop using salt (taste-wise), try halving the amounts needed. Slowly you'll get use to the taste, and then keep decreasing again.
* Try using herbs and spices as flavor enhancements.
* Don't put salt at the table.
* Choose your restaurants carefully, and check what's in the food.
* Drink 8 glasses of fresh (unsoftened) water per day

Tom Beni has a history of Meniers Disease in his family. He is following the subject as part of maintaining a curious and healthy life style.

Yeast Infections in Men - Causes, Symptoms and Cures

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Jack Landry

Male yeast infections can occur in just the same places that women will get it – with the exception of the vagina of course! But, I’m not talking primarily of the yeast infections that can occur elsewhere on the body, but instead of the type of yeast infections that can occur on the genital area. Yeast infections in men can occur just as they do in women.

Now since men don’t have a vagina, and therefore can’t harbor or breed the Candida bacteria in their vagina, it falls to the factor of transference for men to get yeast infections.

Causes

Although there can be a few different reasons for men to get yeast infections, the most common reason is due to transferal through sexual intercourse. If their sexual partner has a yeast infection, then a man has a chance of also contracting a yeast infection.

You can in fact get a yeast infection by passing it along to your partner through sexual intercourse. For the most part this is how male yeast infections will occur. It will pass from you to your partner and sometimes even back again.

That’s why it’s a good thing if you can stop all sexual relations until your yeast clears up. After all that’s said and done, it’s better to have a short period of abstinence in your life than to have to be continually guarding against a recurrence of yeast just because you passed it along to your partner.

This can sometimes have a ping pong effect where you might first have the yeast infection and pass it along to your partner, who in turn will get it, and who in turn will pass it back to you. However, although you can get yeast infections through sexual intercourse, yeast infections aren’t considered as a sexually transmitted disease.

This is not a matter of sexually transmitted diseases. Yeast infections can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, but that doesn’t mean that the other person will get it. In the case of male yeast infections, there’s only a 12-15% chance that they will get it f their partner has a yeast infection.

That’s why it’s always a good idea to abstain from having sexual relations while you have a yeast infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms of male yeast infections will be similar to those of vaginal yeast infections. There will be some differences but for the most part they are similar.

• Itching of the penis
• Burning sensation of the tip of the penis
• Red rash on your penis
• Burning sensation when urinating

Cures

And just as the symptoms for male yeast infections are the same or similar to those of female yeast infections, the cures are also the same or similar. Very obviously there are some things that you can’t do in the case of cures, like the use of suppositories for instance.

But you can adapt just about all of the other cures to suit you. You might also want to ask your doctor about prescription medications and over the counter medications.

In the case of over the counter medications you might definitely want to ask your doctor first about whether you can use them as well, or whether you need to go in for something different. And once you do get it there’s also the chance that you can pass it back to your sexual partner and get it back again as well.

Hypothyroidism falls under the hormonal disorder. The condition occurs when the thyroid gland (which is located in the neck region) secrets the thyroxin hormone below the normal secretion level. Thyroxin plays an important role in body metabolism process. Any abnormality or alteration in this hormone will disturb metabolism of the body too.

To prevent the disease and its adverse effects, it is quite important to first get the problem diagnosed properly. 6 Ways to Slow Down the Adult ADD Brain

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

If you have adult ADD, then you know that sometimes, slowing down is a very hard thing to do. There are so many tasks to accomplish and so little time to get them done. So your mind goes into high speed, trying to accomplish it all and more, or worrying about the fact that it seems impossible to get it all done. As a result, you spend a lot of time stressing, and very little time enjoying life.

While slowing down is a difficult skill to build, it can be done. Here are 6 proven ways to slow down the adult ADD brain:

1. Leave Work
Set your business hours and stick to them! Although sometimes it's necessary to work late, don't do it unless you absolutely have to! You'll work more efficiently during the day when the time you have to accomplish your tasks is limited. And take weekends off (or at least 2 days a week)! You deserve it.

2. Plan a Night Out with Others
Nothing is more fun than a night out with people you like. This could be coworkers, friends, family, or members of a group you belong to. Enjoy yourself.

3. Make a Weekly Commitment (Like Taking a Class or Participating in a Group)
Get an excuse to get out of the house and out of the office every week! Take a class, preferably learning something you always wanted to know how to do. Make sure you *pay* for the class in advance so you won't be tempted to skip it!

4. Journal
Journaling forces you to stop, reflect and process. It helps you manage stress and gain clarity. Make the decision to do it every day - even if it's just for 10 minutes! Don't worry about grammar, spelling, punctuation, or flow because no one else ever has to see it.

5. Meditate
There are many different ways to meditate, but I prefer mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is simply the act of being in the present moment - whether you are working, walking, or doing the dishes! Try to keep your mind in the moment, and don't follow stressful or worrisome thoughts when they arise. It's okay to begin slowly by doing 5 minutes of mindful meditation a day, and then building on your practice as you become more comfortable.

6. Turn off Your Computer 2 Hours Before Bed
Computers are quite stimulating, especially for ADDers. Oftentimes, you'll find yourself sitting at your computer at 3 o'clock in the morning totally engrossed in researching something completely random. You just can't step away from it to go to sleep, and that's because the computer wakes up your brain. Turn the computer off two hours before bed in order to properly wind down, and slow down, at night.

Kidney Stones in Women - Symptoms and Advice

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Nicholas Matthews

there are many people that suffer from kidney stones, although I have to admit that before I started to suffer from them myself I did not hear much about them. Once I had a problem with kidney stones it seems that everyone that ever had them came in contact with me with their own particular story about what they went through whatever they had them. The pain that is felt when you have a kidney stone is almost indescribable, and if you have never felt that particular pain then consider yourself lucky. Kidney stones are also indiscriminate, they don't care if they strike men or women. If you are a woman is having problems with kidney stones, or you would like to know the kidney stone symptoms in women and here is some information that might be of use to you.

Any pain that is felt from kidney stones is often the same in both men and women. Although many times you hear about the problems with kidney stones as being intense pain in the back, oftentimes a kidney stone can pass with little or no pain. I have had, in the past, what is known as silent kidney stones. There was no pain involved, however I had dark urine which let me know that that was a problem, and some bleeding somewhere along the line.

Eventually the kidney stone passed and the bleeding stopped. Sometimes, however, the pain that is felt from a kidney stone can circle around from the back to the front. Since women tend to, sometimes, have difficulty with cramping during their menstrual cycle than it is difficult to distinguish the difference if the pain is not too severe. You would also want to be careful with the amount of calcium that you take. Many women take calcium supplements because they do not get enough in their diet, however this could cause a problem as most kidney stones are caused by a buildup of calcium in the system.

Top 10 Hair Styling Tips To Avoid A Bad Hair Day

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by: Sara Liz

No More Bad Hair Days!

If you ask most professional hair stylists they will tell you that less than 25% of the female population actually knows what face shape and skin tone they have. Knowing your face shape will allow you to pick the perfect hair cut. Knowing your skin tone will allow you to pick the perfect hair color. Most women know even less about how to style their hair.

Women are also confused when it comes to knowing what type of hair they have. They may have a lot of hair, which makes them think they have thick hair when in reality each individual strand of hair may be thin, coarse or wavy. This is the reason many women purchase and use the wrong hair styling products. If you’ve ever experienced a bad hair day check out this list of the top 10 reasons why they happen and vow to avoid all of them when creating your next hair styling moment.

Here are the ten top hair style mistakes hair professionals will tell you most women make:

1. Poor blow drying habits.

Just about every woman’s hair can use some volume. Even hair that is poker straight will look better with some volume. The trick is in the blow drying. Don’t blow dry your hair front to back- dry it back to front, lifting at the roots, bringing your hair up using a round brush. For even more volume use a vent brush. The blow dryer should be held at least 12 inches from your scalp, and keep it moving.

2. No protection.

If you use a blow dryer, curling iron, and/or electric curlers you should be using a thermal protector spray. With out it your hair is susceptible to damage from the high heat temperatures. Just spray your hair lightly and comb it throughout to distribute it evenly.

3. The wrong choice.

You would think that most women would know their hair type. But when it comes to picking the perfect products for their hair type most women don’t have a clue. You may know that your hair is curly but is it a fine, coarse or medium texture? Is it color-treated, straight, wavy, or thinning? Do you need a thick gel or just some light mousse? If you are unsure of your exact hair type, ask your stylist. Perhaps you will need to combine two or more products to get the best results. It’s not rocket science but it’s close!

4. Too much of a good thing.

Even when they find the perfect product, most women use too much of it. When your hair stylist gives you the perfect hair cut for your hair, few styling products should be necessary. Your hair should fall into place naturally. No more than a dime size of product is usually necessary. You will need even less of serums or pomades as they are more concentrated. Weighting your hair down with too much product can make it look unwashed and it will become a dust magnet.

5. Flat iron flattening

Incorrect use of the flat iron is evident to most hairstylists. Your hair can become “fried" over time. This can lead to breakage. Many women forget the thermal spray that protects the hair shaft from the heat of a flat iron. After using the protection you should start by sectioning your hair into small sections almost as wide as the flat iron. Starting at the roots, slowly pull the iron down to silken and smooth the hair. When you come to the end of your hair you can choose to pull straight out, flip up or flip under.

6. Trying to style wet or damp hair.

Only hair that is completely dry will hold a hair style. If your hair takes a long time to blow dry you may want to wash it at night to avoid feeling rushed in the morning. Actually hair that has had time to recoup some of the oils that have been washed out will behave better. Once your hair is completely dry, apply any styling products you are using and continue to dry your hair on a low to medium setting. Then style.

7. Waiting too long in between hair cuts.

Ask any professional: A great hairstyle begins with a great hair cut. Some hair cuts will look great as they grow out, but if you like the hairstyle your wearing, get back to the hairstylist as soon as your hair begins to grown out. This could be anywhere between 4 to 8 weeks. This will help the stylist know just what look you want. Another good tip is when you get that perfect hairstyle or haircut, be sure to take a picture, one of the front, one of the back, and both sides, and bring them with you. This way the hairstylist will know exact what you want. Even if you want to grow your hair out, a trim of the spilt ends is very important. Frequent trims will cut the split end off before it can split the entire shaft of hair. This is important if you want a smooth and silky look to your hair.

8. Over styling.

Unless you’re a runway model or someone who is embarking on one of life’s most momentous occasions, like your wedding or prom, there is no need to go over board. Today’s styles call for natural hair that moves and falls freely. This is achieved with the proper hairstyle that fits your hair type and the use of just the right hair styling products.

9. Under styling

Just the opposite of over styling are the millions of women who do nothing. Unless your hair is only a few inches long, it’s not “wash and go". The right hair cut, a little blow drying and styling product can make all the difference in the world. Give it a try!

10. Pick the wrong hair style all together.

Most women choose a hair style that they see on someone else. What looks good on your favorite celebrity or co-worker may not be the hair style that fits your face shape or will work with your type of hair texture, be it wavy, curly, poker straight or thick and springy. Your hair stylist will know what your hair will and will not do, so it is best to bring several hair style pictures with you when visiting your hair stylist for a new hair cut.

Food As Medicine: the Principles of Healthy Eating

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by: Pierre Jean Cousin

One of the most important ways in which we can influence our health is by monitoring what we eat. Eating unhealthily – too much animal fat, salt, sugar and artificial additives – can cause irreparable damage to our bodies, especially to the cardiovascular system and the kidneys. Eating healthily can increase vitality, immunity and life expectancy. We can also influence the health of future generations by teaching our children healthy eating habits.

Food can be used not only to prevent illness but also to treat it. Throughout the ages, and in all cultures, food has played an important role in healing the sick. Yet in contemporary Western societies the emphasis in healthcare has moved from traditional methods, such as diet, to modern medical techniques and a reliance on pharmaceuticals. As a result, self-help dietary remedies are rarely considered. As an experienced practitioner of a range of complementary therapies, I firmly believe in bringing the healing power of foods back to where it belongs – in our homes.

The principles of healthy eating

The mainstay of a healthy diet is plenty of unrefined complex carbohydrates and fibre. Foods such as beans, lentils, potatoes, wholemeal pasta, wholegrain bread and cereals should make up – quite literally – the bulk of our diet. Protein-rich foods, such as meat or fish, can be added to this carbohydrate base in small amounts. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t need very much protein for good health and it is not necessary to eat meat, fish and dairy products as a daily source of protein. The other essential ingredients in a heathy diet are vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (biologically-active substances in plants) which are found in abundance in fruit and vegetables, and essential fatty acids from nuts, seeds, oily fish and oils such as olive oil.

This basic template for healthy eating:

This basic template for healthy eating closely matches the traditional diet that is – or was – eaten in many cultures. Civilizations throughout history have relied upon a combination of cereals and pulses for their staple diet. In Asia this combination is rice and soya; in America it was corn and beans; in Europe it was wheat, rye, barley, oats or buckwheat and beans, lentils or other pulses; and in Africa it is wheat, millet or sorghum and beans or chickpeas. Traditionally, a variety of fruit and vegetables (often eaten raw) have complemented this diet, together with small amounts of meat and fish when available. Fermented foods, such as cheese, yoghurt, curd, fish sauce, pickled vegetables, cider, beer and wine – all of which have a beneficial effect on the gut – also feature in the traditional diet. This diet is ideally suited to the human body – it is rich in friendly bacteria, fibre and nutrients and helps to maintain a healthy biological balance in the gut.

It is very easy to adopt the healthy eating habits that are characteristic of such diets by following these simple common-sense measures:

-Buy more fresh fruit and vegetables (they are rich in antioxidants – substances that help to prevent degenerative disease such as cancer and heart disease), cereals, pulses and fish.

- Cut down on meat, dairy products and convenience food.

- Replace meat with oily fish.

- Tailor food intake to match your actual calorie needs (for most people this means eating less).

- Buy a cook book that emphasizes the Mediterranean diet.

- Reduce your intake of sugar, coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and alcohol.

- Eat at regular intervals (up to five times a day if this suits your needs).

- Eat food that is in-season and, ideally, locally produced.

- Make sure that your diet is as varied as possible.

- Use fresh ingredients as often as possible; avoid canned or dried food which contains additives.

- Be flexible in your eating – aim for balance and enjoyment. Avoid rigid dietary programmes.

How the modern diet fails

These principles of healthy eating contrast starkly with the diet that is increasingly common in the West. Whereas the diet of our pre-industrial ancestors was rich in fresh produce, the modern diet, which has evolved over the last 50–60 years, is characterized by food that contains preservatives, colorants, taste enhancers, sugar, caffeine and even traces of fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and metals. This leads to a proliferation of unhealthy bacteria in the gut, an accumulation of toxins in the body, poor digestion and an increased likelihood of allergies, cardiovascular disease and cancer of the colon.

In the West, food is abundant (the amount produced far exceeds our needs) and relatively cheap owing to modern production and processing techniques. These techniques have created what has been termed “food industrialization" – the production of large amounts of food quickly and cheaply at the expense of quality and nutritional content. Paradoxically, although we now have more choice in what we can eat, less time is devoted to the selection, preparation and consumption of food. Our diets often consist of a limited number of ingredients that we continue eating out of routine and convenience.

Much of the food that we buy is impoverished. For example, when fresh produce is out of season in one country, it is often imported from another, and much of its vitamin content is lost during transit or storage in refrigerators or on supermarket shelves.

Goodness is also depleted in the process of sterilization: in order to make fresh food “safe" and prolong shelf-life by eliminating micro-organisms, it is often sterilized or irradiated – yet this procedure renders it, quite literally, lifeless. Although all unhealthy disease-causing bacteria are killed in the process, all the “good" bacteria and ferments are also destroyed. These are important for digestion and in maintaining a healthy and balanced environment in the gut. Most milk, for example, is pasteurized, with the result that it does not contain natural ferments and is difficult for many people to break down and digest. Milk products that have not been pasteurized, such as live yoghurt (which is full of lactobacilli bacteria), are well tolerated by most people. Another consequence of sterilization is that, if food is left out of the refrigerator for too long or is reheated too many times, micro-organisms, such as listeria, will re-establish themselves. Without competition from good bacteria, the unhealthy ones can proliferate unchecked and cause disease.

Industrialized food production is partly responsible for a range of contemporary health problems such as male hormone imbalance (linked to the misuse of hormones in animals), the advent of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria (linked to the routine addition of antibiotics to animal feed), salmonella in poultry and eggs (linked to poor living conditions among animals), and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (linked to bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE, a disease affecting cows that is caused by contaminated cattle feed). Genetic modification of food is the latest in a catalogue of food-production experiments that I believe may have harmful long-term effects on human health and the environment. The defensive attitude of scientists who argue that “no evidence exists that genetically-modified (GM) food is unsafe" needs to be challenged – this kind of negative statement does not constitute proof that GM food is safe.

Due to the wide-ranging effects of food industrialization it is important that, as consumers, we make informed choices about what we buy – not just favouring foods that are unprocessed and grown according to organic principles, but also excluding products that are nutritionally-empty and preserved and enhanced in artificial ways.

The medicinal value of food

Our knowledge of the healing power of food is based upon thousands of years of tradition and empirical observation. Modern scientific research now confirms the curative abilities of foods that have been used therapeutically through the ages. A huge variety of foods are known to contain compounds that have medicinal properties. For example, the potent antibacterial action of allicin, a substance found in garlic, is well documented. So too are the protective and healing properties of antioxidants and essential oils found in fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices. Some pharmacologically-active ingredients are extracted from food and sold in tablet form. Cynarin, for example, is an active ingredient that is extracted from artichoke. An extensive body of research has shown that this substance can play an important role in treating liver disease and help damaged liver tissue to regenerate. The great advantage of using food as medicine is that food is readily available to all of us and can be self-administered with relative safety. Food cures work in a purely holistic way by enhancing the body’s natural functions and encouraging it to heal itself.

Selecting and harvesting ingredients

Whenever possible, use organically-grown fruit and vegetables, make sure they are fresh and avoid keeping them in a refrigerator for too long. When buying meat, buy organically-produced, free-range or farm-raised meat; buy small quantities of quality cuts rather than larger amounts of cheaper meat. Try to buy fish on the same day that it is delivered to your fishmonger.

If possible, try to harvest wild ingredients from your garden or local countryside. When picking ingredients, such as borage leaves, nettles and dandelion leaves, choose young plants that are growing away from main roads, rail tracks, and paths that are regularly used by animals. Make sure that you can confidently identify the plants that you need and that what you pick is in good condition and fit for consumption. You can cultivate many herbs, such as camomile, lemon balm, savoury, mint, basil, thyme and rosemary, in your garden or in pots on a patio or balcony. When harvesting wild fruit, such as berries, choose bushes and trees that are not exposed to pollution from roads. Collect only undamaged, ripe fruit and don’t be tempted to eat it on the spot – it must be washed thoroughly, and preferably cooked.

A Virus Made Me Fat?

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by: Abigail Richards

Research has finally proven what we have wanted to hear for years. It isn’t junk food that makes you fat or laying on the couch or the lack of exercise-no it is a virus?

Researchers are claiming that a virus is the cause of obesity. Dr. Magdalena Pasarica, M.D., Ph.D., of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center has an explanation as to why obesity affects many people worldwide. She said it’s a contagious virus called human adenovirus or Ad-36.

Apparently AD-36 induces storage fat. She does say that they do not believe the virus is the only cause of obesity, but studies show stronger evidence that the virus could be the cause.

Studies are still being completed since not all people with the virus develop obesity. “We would ultimately like to identify the underlying factors that predispose some obese people to develop this virus and eventually find a way to treat it," Pasarica said.

The research was conducted by obtaining adult stem cells from fat tissue of people who had undergone liposuction. Stem cells are a type of master cell that exist in an immature form and give rise to more specialized cells.

After about a week of growth in tissue culture, most of the virus-infected adult stem cells developed into fat cells, whereas the non-infected stem cells did not, the researchers say.

Previous studies have shown AD-36 increased fat in chickens, mice and other nonhuman animals.

It is said that the virus then tells the cells to produce a lot of lipids, or fats. The result: bigger fat cells — and more of them. Those infected with the virus are advised to double their exercise and dieting efforts.

So I am thinking it had to come from that little boy I kissed on the playground in kindergarten. It was downhill from there. Well what is done is done. I guess I will die an infected obese person. . . now where did I put those potato chips?

Natural Home Cures For Cirrhosis Of The Liver

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

The patient should be kept in bed. He must abstain completely from alcohol in any form. He should undergo an initial liver cleaning programme with a juice fast for five to seven days. Freshly-extracted juices from red beets, lemon, papaya and grapes may be taken during this period. This may be followed by the fruit and milk diet for two or three weeks. In this regimen, the patient should have three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits and milk. The fruits may include apple, pear, grapes, grapefruit, orange, pineapple and peach. One litre of milk may be taken on the first day. It should be increased by 250 ml daily up to two litres a day. The milk should be fresh and unboiled, but may be slightly warmed, if desired. It should be sipped very slowly.

After the fruit-and-milk diet, the patient may gradually embark upon a well-balanced diet of three basic food groups, namely (i) seeds, nuts and grains (ii) vegetables and (iii) fruits, with emphasis on raw organically-grown foods. Adequate high quality protein is necessary in cirrhosis. The best complete proteins for liver patients are obtained from raw goat's milk, home-made raw cottage cheese, sprouted seeds and grains and raw nuts, especially almonds. Vegetables such as beets, squashes, bitter gourd, egg-plant, tomato, carrot, radish and papaya are useful in this condition. All fats and oils should be excluded from the diet for several weeks:

The patient should avoid all refined, processed and canned foods, sugar in any form, spices and condiments, strong tea and coffee, fried foods, all preparations cooked in ghee, oil or butter and all meats rich in fat. The use of salt should be restricted. The patient should also avoid all chemical additives in food and poisons in air, water and environment.

The juice of carrot, in combination with spinach juice, or cucumber and beet juice, has been found beneficial in the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver. In the first combination, 200 ml. of spinach juice should be mixed with 300 ml. of carrot juice to prepare 500 ml. or half a litre of combined juices. In the second c6mbination, 100 ml. each of cucumber and beet juices should be mixed with 300 ml. of carrot juice to prepare 500 ml. or half a litre of combined juices. In the second combination, 100 ml. each of cucumber and beet juices should be mixed with 300 ml. of carrot juice.

Black seeds of papaya have been found useful in the cirrhosis of the liver, caused by alcoholism and malnutrition. A tablespoon of juice obtained by grinding the seeds, mixed with 10 drops of fresh lime juice, should be given once or twice daily for about a month as a medicine for this disease.

These are played at a volume higher than the volume of the tinnitus sounds so that it is the white noise that a person with tinnitus hears and not the tinnitus sounds. To assist with treating tinnitus, maskers are CD recordings of white noise, the same sound that is you hear when you listen to an empty radio station. This way a person is able to relax and sleep and forget about the ear ringing sounds.

And while taking the homeopathic treatment, it is best to use tinnitus masking therapy such as white noise CD's to mask the noises and fall asleep. The right homeopathic tinnitus remedies based on the symptoms of the tinnitus are recommended in coordination with the vitamin supplements.
