Fatal Flaws of Automated Defibrillators
By: Peter Kent
There are many different types of defibrillators. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses and treats cardiac arrest by re-establishing an effective heart rhythm. This treatment is called defibrillation, which applies an electric shock to the entire heart muscle, uniformly clearing the electrical activity of the heart and hopefully allowing it to resynchronize.
An AED is called external because the operator applies the electrode pads to the bare chest of the victim, unlike internal defibrillators, which have electrodes surgically implanted inside the body of a patient. Currently, there are only two marketable types of AEDs available: semi-automatic and fully-automatic.
Semi-automatic AEDs prompt the user to stand clear and then to push a shock button to defibrillate. Several units, which are fully automatic, do not require a button to be pushed, but rather a shock is delivered automatically after a stand clear voice prompts the user.
AEDs can be found in corporate and governmental offices, shopping centers, airports, restaurants, hotels, sports stadiums, schools and universities, community centers, and other places where large groups of people gather and the risk of a sudden cardiac arrest incident is likely. In some cities, all police vehicles carry an AED. All hospitals, fire departments and health care professionals use AEDs to address cardiac problems as well. Medical and emergency professionals who use AEDs consider them an invaluable tool. Therefore it is extremely important that these devices are reliable as they can often mean the difference between life and death for thousands of people each year.
Access Cardio Systems, Inc. Emergency Defibrillator Failures
In 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issues a worldwide recall of Access Cardio Systems, Inc. emergency defibrillators as they were found to have faulty components that could prevent the device from delivering a proper shock. These defibrillators were discovered to have two probably issues affecting them. Some of these defibrillators have a catastrophic failure of the shock delivery circuit board that prevents the delivery of additional shocks. Additional defibrillators were losing battery power and the switches were becoming inoperable because of an error that caused the on/off switch to turn on without reason or notice. After this malfunction the device will no longer defibrillate or operate correctly. Since the recalls Access Cardio Systems, Inc., the manufacturer of these defibrillators, went out of business. It is not possible to replace any disposable parts for any of the machines that were not found to be defective. The FDA has recalled many of these defibrillators and has advised all Access Cardio Systems, Inc. customers to immediately cease using the devices and to find replacement devices elsewhere.
The FDA Recalls Access Cardio Systems, Inc. Emergency Defibrillators
As part of the FDA's oversight of medical devices the department has a classification system that includes three classes of recalls, Class I, II, and III. Class I recalls are the most serious type of recall and indicates that there is a reasonable chance that the product will cause serious health problems or death. The FDA has issued a Class I recall of the following Access Cardio Systems, Inc. devices:
. AccessAED PAD (without ECG trace) Public Access Defibrillator (Model #9100-0010-0)
. AccessAED PAD Package (without ECG trace) (Model #9100-0015-0)
. AccessAED Package (without audio record) (Model #9100-0150-0)
. AccessAED (without audio record) (Model #9100-0100-0)
. AccessAED (with audio record) (Model #9100-0100-1)
. AccessALS (Advanced Life Support) (Model #9100-0100-2)
. AccessAED Package (with audio record) (Model #9100-0150-1)
. AccessALS Package (Model #9100-0150-2) . In a Class II recall, there is a possibility that the medical device will cause temporary or reversible health problems, or there is a remote chance that the device may cause serious health problems.
Additionally, several recalls of the Access AED and Access ALS Automated External Defibrillators (Model #9100-0100) were issued through the FDA. Individuals who have experienced health problems or injury related to these devices should seek legal advice as they may be able to receive monetary benefits. Individuals that purchased the faulty defibrillators will not likely be receiving refunds at this time, as the company is not refunding anyone.

Important Facts on Pre-Diabetes
Millions of people in the western world are diagnosed with having pre-diabetes and Type II Diabetes has become somewhat of an epidemic of late. More and more people are being diagnosed with this potentially life threatening condition, in the past Type II Diabetes usually set in later in life, but today more younger people are being diagnosed every day with this disease. The diabetes epidemic has mirrored the obesity epidemic currently overtaking the western world, which leads many in the medical community to believe that obesity and diabetes go hand in hand.
According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 54 million people in the United States have pre diabetes. I hear you ask What are the important facts on Pre diabetes, it is a condition in which the blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be considered Type II diabetes. Although pre diabetes is not a full fledged disease, it can also cause complications in the heart and blood circulation if left untreated.
The good news about pre diabetes is that once diagnosed, with proper care and nutrition as well as the care of a physician, you can avoid being diagnosed with Type II diabetes. The condition can reverse itself, although it will always be a threat, but it does take dedication and a mindset on the part of the individual to avoid becoming a fully fledged diabetic.
One way to reverse the effects of pre diabetes is to maintain a healthy weight. This can be easily accomplished through diet and exercise. For those who feel that it is too much trouble to manage their weight or complain that they do not have the time to exercise, they need to realize that the time they spend exercising now can eliminate their time spent on dialysis. While not all people with diabetes experience kidney failure, many do. And when the kidneys fail, these patients must spend many hours each week, hooked up to a machine that functions as their kidneys.
Obesity is also an epidemic in the United States and many in the medical community believe that this is contributory to the corresponding diabetic epidemic. It is the general consensus of the medical community that obesity is a precursor to Type II diabetes. Therefore, those who have pre diabetes can stave off the disease by making some healthy life choices that will eliminate their need for medication or insulin in later years.
Remember the saying "A Stitch in Time Saves Nine" could be applied to those who complain that they do not want to watch their diet - remember that it is easier to watch your diet than to inject yourselves with insulin or having to monitor their blood glucose levels several times a day. And to those who feel that foods that are rich in carbohydrates are less expensive than healthier alternatives you should be reminded of the cost of medications and doctor visits so in the long run if you are pre-disposed with pre-diabetes it is much wiser to take control of their condition right away.
While some people are pre disposed to diabetes through genetic factors, others acquire this disease by eating foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugars and low in nutrients, being inactive and not maintaining a healthy weight. If you have been told that you have pre diabetes, do not fret. You can reverse this condition. Begin an exercise regime, even if it only entails walking. Take a look at the Glycemic Index that explains which foods diabetics should avoid and follow these suggestions.
See your doctor about being put on a weight loss program and make certain that he or she continues to monitor your blood glucose levels. Pre diabetes does not have to turn into Type II diabetes. By developing a healthier lifestyle, you can reverse this condition and lead a longer, healthier life.

How do detox foot pads work?
For hundreds of years, eastern medication understood toxins traveled downwards in the body accumulating in the tips of our toes and ankles. They also understood that toxin accumulation escort to many degenerative diseases. For instance painful rheumatism and arthritis were rooted by acidic toxic fluids accumulating around the joints.
In foot reflexology, the feet are considered channels to numerous fundamental organs, with over 60 acupuncture points on the soles of our feet. Our detox foot pads contain natural components which excite these acupuncture points through the coalesced action of lumber/wicker vinegar, far-infrared energy and negative ion emissions. This stimulation results in the breakdown of water and waste molecules that free impasses in the circulatory and lymphatic coordination’s. Cleansing in nature begins in the soles of our feet.

Are You Getting Frequent Hiccups? Acid Reflux May Be Why
By: Kathryn Whittaker
If you are experiencing hiccups, acid reflux could be a contributory factor and you may need to find a remedy to find relief from this non-serious, yet distressing symptom.
Hiccups, also called hiccoughs, result when the diaphragm suddenly contracts. The diaphragm is the thin muscle located under the heart and lungs that separates the chest from the abdomen and assists with inhaling. After the diaphragm contracts, the top portion of the windpipe known as the glottis, immediately closes which creates the characteristic “hic” sound of hiccups.
A hiccup is a reflex you have no control over and can be hard to stop. That being said, the interesting fact about hiccups is that unlike other reflexes (I.E. sneezing, coughing, etc.), a hiccup does not appear to have a useful purpose.
What is the hiccups acid reflux connection? Most people have a case of the hiccups every once in a while, and in many of these instances, the spell of hiccups is brief, and there is no apparent reason why it was experienced. However, if hiccups are related to acid reflux, it is not uncommon for hiccups to be persistent and last for hours, this could be because of:
- Temporary swollen stomach – This could be caused by eating too quickly, overeating, drinking carbonated beverages, swallowing air.
- Alcohol – This is more common with fizzy alcohol drinks such as beer, sparkling wine, and mixed drinks. Too much air may also be swallowed while drinking alcohol.
- Excessive smoking – taking in too much air
- Emotional stress – when stressed many people tend to overeat, eat too fast, drink alcohol, smoke excessively, and are more prone to gulping air.
How can you treat hiccups? In many cases, there is no need for treatment because hiccups will typically disappear as quickly as they occurred. However, the following are some remedies you can try to treat mild hiccups:
- Drink a full glass of water
- Sip ice water
- Suck on an ice cube
- Hold your breath for 30 seconds
- Breath rapidly
- Breath into a paper bag
- Pull your knees into your chest
- Gasping from sudden fright
- Distract your mind from thinking about the hiccups
The above hiccup remedies will usually only work with short bouts of hiccups, and will not cure persistent hiccups that last for longer than 24 hours, or hiccups that recur frequently throughout the day. If you have persistent hiccups, they could be the cause of acid reflux, in which case you should be experiencing other acid reflux symptoms aside from the hiccups including heartburn, belching, regurgitation, coughing, etc. Therefore, try the following to remedy your acid reflux hiccups:
- Avoid drinking alcohol and carbonated beverages
- Stop smoking
- Eat and drink slowly. You should also eat small portions of food to prevent overeating.
- Reduce stress. Find ways to relax or release bottled up energy through exercise, meditation, or taking part in activities you enjoy.
If you try the above remedies and they do not work, you should see your doctor to discover what the underlying cause of your hiccups are. You may discover that your hiccups and acid reflux are not related. The reason is because there are more than 100 conditions that can cause hiccups. Usually when the underlying cause is identified, persistent hiccups can be cured.

Juniper Berries, The Powerful Kidney Herb
by: Paul Blake
For each organ of the human body there is a herb that outshines all others in its ability to assist that organ when it is diseased. Juniper berries are magic when it comes to the kidney and urinary tract system. I say magic because I have seen it at work and its power to heal the urinary tract system is so powerful and fast that it seems magical.I have seen the power of this herb help many people but the most impressive case I ever saw was a woman (a registered nurse) who had been suffering from urinary tract infections for more then 3 years. She was on antibiotics and had suffered 2 renal failures when I met her. Along with some naturopathic advice on life style I left her with some whole juniper berries. I suggested she take about a half dozen berries 3 times a day and consider that she stop taking the antibiotics.
I got a call 2 days later. She was beside herself because the infection was gone. She could hardly believe that after all those years of suffering that taking a few berries three times a day could stop this infection so quickly. This experience changed that woman's life. The last I heard from her she was studying naturopathic medicine.
But you can see what I am getting at; this berry is a wonderful herb that has the ability to help those who are suffering needlessly with what appears to be an incurable problem. This berry is just a food that has antibiotic and antiviral properties with no side effects.
I do not want to leave you with the impression that I believe in treating a symptom with an herb. Treating symptoms is modern medicine's way of treating disease. As I said above I gave the nurse advice on changing her lifestyle as well as taking juniper berries. If you only treat the symptom you leave the root of the disease to appear somewhere else with more power. So look at your life style that is the root of your urinary problem.
Some Juniper Berry Tips:
If you are taking medication, always check the contraindications of that drug (those things you do not want to take with the medication, such as lithium).
A whole juniper berry that you buy from the health food store (I do not recommend the tea) should be a little bit like a raisin. It should be soft and taste sweet and piney.
