Getting Personal With Transpersonal Hypnotherapy

ป้ายกำกับ:

by Jeff Glasser

Dating back some thousands of years ago, transpersonal hypnotherapy is almost as old as acupuncture. It has been used by many people because of its therapeutic effects to many illnesses and other bodily conditions, ever since it gave birth in this world.

Today, a diverse array of transpersonal hypnotherapy has been conceived. There is hypnotherapy anxiety, hypnosis for weight loss, and a lot more variations of the therapy. Each and every type of therapy has been deemed to be very effective in every specific case. As to why it is effective, the reasons are still unknown. Because there are no detrimental effects related to it, bust safety in trying these treatments is greatly guaranteed. However, the positive effects can only be noted through a long term compliance with the therapy. It is important to remember that compliance with transpersonal therapy is greatly needed to make this kind of treatment work.

Transpersonal Hypnotherapy â€" What Is It?

Transpersonal hypnotherapy believes on the fact that there is something greater than our three dimensional consciousness. Said to be the guidance of our power, is this dimension of human nature in hypnotherapy. The individual's innate capacity to direct or focus on the problems areas of his life is the key to get in touch with the root cause or source of his problems. It is greatly believed that through transpersonal hypnotherapy, it would be possible to grasp on your problem and make changes in order to cure it.

Transpersonal Hypnotherapy â€" Purposes

Transpersonal hypnotherapy works in so many ways. First off, it helps people get cured of their addiction problems in drugs, smoking, and drinking. Those who are frequently exposed to stress, the therapy also helps relax. Transpersonal hypnotherapy can even fix weight loss problems. The possibilities of this kind of treatment is actually almost limitless; perhaps the only thing that can tell of its efficacy would be the determination of the ill person to get cured and the regular attendance in the sessions given by the professional hypnotherapist.

Transpersonal Hypnotherapy â€" The Two Forms

Transpersonal hypnotherapy has two forms, namely: directive and non-directive. The approach of the treatment is the only difference between the two. In a straightforward manner does directive hypnotherapy approach the person; this means the therapist readily asks some questions and gives suggestions to the person's problem areas. Non-directive therapy, meanwhile acts the opposite way as further "mind conditioning" sessions are given prior to the hypnosis therapy itself.

Understanding Methods Of Treating Autism

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Jon M Arnold

The first step in treating autism is developing an understanding of what autism is. One out of every 150 births is estimated to result in a child affected by this neurological “spectrum disorder”. This disorder affects the normal functions of the brain that impact social interaction and communication skills.

Autism is considered a “spectrum disorder” because it has the ability to affect each individual differently, resulting in various combinations of behavior issues with varying degrees of severity. This results in children displaying different levels of autism and is reflected in the various references to the disorder such as autistic tendencies, high or low-functioning autism and more or less enabled. It is important that anyone interested in treating autism not pay too close attention to the term used to define a child’s specific level of autism, as every child has the ability to improve their condition with treatment and education.

The symptoms of Autism disorders are varied and are often times confused with symptoms of Asperger’s Disorder. Although both disorders fall under the larger umbrella of “Pervasive Developmental Disorders” and share some of the same traits, each is a very different disorder. Where autism is a neurological disorder, Asperger’s sufferers show far fewer neurological problems than their autism counterparts. They also display a higher verbal IQ than performance IQ in testing, the exact opposite of autistic IQ testing results. These differences between these disorders are very important to those developing ways to treat autism, as different approaches are needed for each disorder.

The main goal in treating autism is to provide an autistic child with the ability to function within their environment. Often times various types of treatment are used in combination to help them achieve this. Treatments such as behavior modification, communication therapy and dietary modifications are used to help improve the mental and physical symptoms of autism. The most common type of treatment is based on applied behavior analysis. This theory is based upon the idea that behavior that is rewarded is more likely to be repeated then behavior that is ignored. This type of treatment directly addresses the obsessive and repetitive tendencies of autistic spectrum disorders.

In addition to obsessive behaviors, most autistic children show great resistance to change. The combination of these two behaviors results in a very great need for structure in their lives. Using behavior modification techniques that are highly-structured and skill-oriented can greatly improve an autistic child’s chance of improvement. The more controlled the treatment, the better the child will cope with it. Part of the treatment is also controlling the environment the treatment is conducted in. To ease the obsessive behavior and resistance to any type of change, intense one-on-one treatment and extensive caregiver participation is best.

The most important thing in treating autism is to recognize that each child, while having the same diagnosis, will exhibit very different symptoms. Each path of treatment will vary but will need to incorporate the basic needs of autism sufferers, such as routine and scheduling, as well as the needs of each individual child.

The Anti-Aging Effect of Teeth Whitening

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Matt Wittchow.

You are born, you grow up, and then you get old. Do you really get old? In today's world, there is a surgical intervention, injection, or cosmetic to correct the signs of advancing age. Cosmetic treatment to obtain whiter teeth is just as commonplace as other types of anti-age enhancements. We might get older in age, but our features might actually get younger.

Our society has become a society focused on how we look. We wear clothes to make us look thinner and shoes to make us look taller. We can change our eye color and our hair color. Now, we can change the color of our teeth. I guess it was a natural way for things to progress. If you think about it, wouldn't it look a little out of place to have a nice tight wrinkle free face only to have less than white teeth exposed when you smile? Many today will take extreme steps to look young "all over" that includes having the whitest teeth to go with our manicured bodies.

Less than white teeth, even severely discolored teeth tend to occur as we grow older. Our system will slow down and even halt the production of certain nutrients. Our bones will loose density. The gums will recede and shrink. Our teeth will betray us. Wait! You can change these facts and fool the mirror. For a few hundred dollars and up, you can go to a cosmetic dentist to have your choice of many teeth whitening applications. For a few dollars and up you can apply your choice of many teeth whitening applications yourself. For those so inclined, there are herbal remedies for white teeth for one to use.

It is true. Yellow, stained teeth do make the face look older, or at least less youthful. If you see your hair turning grey, then you will notice less than white teeth in your mouth. In a way, it is an absence of color that causes the change in color. Not everyone is old that suffers from signs we usually associate with aging. A small minority exhibit premature aging due to genetics, medication, or disease process. Having the whitest teeth may not be possible for this population. However, with cosmetic dentistry and the different teeth whitening applications available, even they can have an improved whiter smile.

Where does a person start with the anti-aging process? Most of us who are conscious of the effects of aging start with the face. If you looked in each bathroom just in the United States, you would find at the very least, a toothpaste that promises to whiten your teeth in the vast majority of these homes. In Many of those homes you will also find some other type of topical teeth whitener in the cabinets. If you research a little further, you will find a large percentage of individuals who have had a professional teeth whitening procedure.

I'm not sure just exactly what is says for the character of our society being so focused on esthetics and the fight not to grow old, or at least not look older. I am sure we have the means available to try to stay younger looking. Cosmetic surgery is a big business. Cosmetic dentistry is a big business. The over the counter teeth whiteners do not just sit on the shelf ignored by the majority. We use our creams, makeup and even our toothbrushes to keep us young looking. After all, with white teeth, we need young skin.

How to take Vitamin and Mineral Supplements: Multivitamins, Iron and Calcium

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

If you are one of the millions of people taking vitamins and minerals in the form of supplement tablets or capsules every day, do you ever wonder whether or not your body is actually benefiting from the routine?

In this article read some of the information you probably need to consider when you are looking to get the most from your vitamin or mineral supplements.

If you take a multivitamin:

• Take the daily multivitamin/mineral supplement with a meal to help break down the tablet at the same time your food shreds
• The pill will dissolve more thoroughly and be more easily absorbed into the system later on
• Having food in the stomach may also help reduce the gastric irritation that some people have with vitamin supplements
• Don’t spend a lot of money on a daily multivitamin
• Supplements marked "timed release" are not worth the extra expense
• Be sure to look for a designation of USP on the label. This assures you that the product has been lab-tested to disintegrate and dissolve so its ingredients can properly absorb throughout your body as well as ensuring its potency and purity meet established standards

If you take single vitamins or minerals such as Iron Supplements and Calcium Supplements:

• Women who take iron supplements or multivitamin/mineral pills that contain iron, should take them at mealtime or with a glass of juice to help the body extract more iron from the supplement
• If you are a tea or coffee drinker it is best to avoid these two beverages when taking an iron supplement or eating an iron-rich meal. It is best to wait about an hour and an half before drinking tea or coffee.
• If you take an iron-containing multi and a separate calcium supplement, you can avoid potential interactions by taking the pills at different meals especially if your daily iron intake is a greater concern. Taking the two supplements at different times will enhance the benefits of both supplements and decrease potential for interactions.
• If calcium is more your priority than iron and you take high doses of calcium the most important thing to remember is to divide the doses. For example, if you take 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day, you should divide the doses in half, one in the morning and one in the evening to get the best absorption. The body may not be able to absorb larger doses all at once. It is also a good idea to choose a calcium supplement that contains vitamin D, without which calcium cannot be efficiently absorbed. People, who live in areas where they don’t get enough sun such as Boston or Chicago, should take a Vitamin D supplement that has 200 to 400 units of D per 1,000 milligrams of calcium. If you are past 60 it may be especially important to take calcium with meals to avoid atrophic gastritis or you can take calcium citrate instead of calcium carbonate. The negatives to taking calcium citrate are that it is more expensive and you will need to take two or three tablets to get the same 500 to 600 milligrams of calcium found in one calcium carbonate tablet.

What about chelated minerals?

• These are available at many health food stores; however, they are not worth the extra money you will pay for promises of superiority. The term chelated does not mean the mineral is more absorbable or more available to the body than the unchelated form. It only describes a type of chemical bond that can occur when a mineral is attached to certain compounds.

Dangers Of IPD (Invasive Pneumococcal Disease)

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Emma M. Torner |

Being pregnant does not make a woman immune to various sicknesses like the IPD for example. Better known as Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, it ranks number one among other illnesses that rampantly attack both the old and the young. The pneumococcus, a very common strain of bacteria is the culprit.

The danger of IPD shows when the bacteria start to invade the lung, this occurrence is the most common source of the community-acquired bacterial pneumonia. Worse is, when it attacks the brain, it leads to deadly meningitis. Otitis media as well as sinusitis are other aftereffects of IPD.

Every pregnant woman should know that IPD can victimize anyone, irregardless of their race, sex and condition. Nevertheless, there are groups of people who fall on a higher risk in developing IPD. Do you want to know if you’re one of the candidates? The first thing you should know is that it is usually common among people who are 65 and older. Sufferers of sickle cell disease and those with weak immune system caused by cancer, Hodgkin's disease, leukemia, or human immunodeficiency virus; are in great trouble too. Diabetics, alcohol-dependents, and people suffering from chronic illness such as complications to the heart, lung, and kidney; are also at risk. Most of all, those who are living on special kind of environment like Alaskan Natives and American Indian are more prone as well.

Seeing the danger given by IPD, the very instance a pregnant woman suffers from the condition, immediate attention is required. On normal cases, treatment involves the use of penicillin, although some doctor may choose other routine for medication since the case of every pregnant woman is delicate and unique. And given the fact that antibiotics are highly resistant to the disease, longer hospitalization may be required.

IPD can only be prevented through the vaccine. If you wish to get one, you’ll be overwhelmed that there are actually two choices; the polysaccharide vaccine and the conjugate vaccine. The first one is basically for adult-use while the second kind is for children.

Keep in mind however that not everyone can get the vaccine. If you have previous allergic reaction to the Pneumococcal vaccine then further vaccination should be avoided. People undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy are also prohibited from getting the shot.

Pregnant women suffering from IPD are highly at risk since it can create added infection to the unborn baby. Plus, women are placed on double trouble given that their body is trying hard to fight the angst given by the ailment while at the same time the body is trying to support the growing stomach. So you could be sure, simply confined yourself at your home as to evade yourself from catching the disease. Doing this can also give expectant mothers the chance to rest and to better prepare for the coming of their precious bundle of joy. Take care of your health because after all, it is you who would design the what kind of life your child will live.

You can Perform at your Best in Your Athletic Performance

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

ust recently we have witnessed some of the greatest swimming performances by many athletes in several countries in the early stages of the 2008 Olympics. How can so many athletes perform at that level at the time they are scheduled to swim their most prestigious event? In order to do that, each individual must be able to operate at their highest level both mentally and physically.

Just think about your own life and try to remember when you operated at a level higher than you ever have before, when the pressure was at its highest. Can't remember? Most people have ups and downs every day. There are a few days when they feel great, full of energy. However, there are many more days when the batteries are running low. Stress, physical demands, life's situations, health struggles like inflammation and arthritis. You name it. But it seems like these Olympic athletes can move past their daily demands to perform when it counts most. How do you think they are able to do it? Think about this! Remember the phrase "Garbage in Garbage out". This applies across the board to all. These athletes though are able to avoid "Garbage in Garbage out" and replace it with "Best in Best out". They have coaches who work with them mentally and physically.

Let's take the physical side of things and think about what would happen to you if;

1. You could reduce or eliminate inflammation in your body.
2. You could modulate bacterial infections in the body.
3. Stimulate Red Blood Cell growth.
4. Lower Blood Pressure.
5. Support allergy symptoms.
6. Slow down and even reverse aging.
7. Improve immume system response.
8. Slow Anxiety.
9. Boost energy and body health.
10.Reduce headaches and migraines.
11.Ingest the highest amount of antioxidants from any food in the world.

If you could do all or most of this you would have Total Maximum Control over your life. Therefore you would be able to operate at your highest level most of the time. What would your life be like if you could operate at your highest level physicall and mentally?

Current and former(Greatest American Sprinter) Olympic athletes have access to a natural food supplement that lets them operate at their maximum potential most every day. You can too.

Top 10 Options to Reduce Inflammation Naturally

ป้ายกำกับ:

by Matt J. Ney

Many people in a whole host of countries around the world have a diet that is radically different than those from recent previous generations. With the increase of fast food options and the amount of preservatives in much of our food supply, the world has gotten fatter. In most countries, the citizens are anywhere from 10-30% heavier than two generations ago

This increase in heaviness is the result of an increase in food with a high fat content and a decrease in physical activity. Consequently, the quality of life has decreased across the board and we see many in their 40's to 50's suffering heart attacks and strokes. Cancer has also affected this age group of people moreso than their previous generations.

According to pubmed.com, the five major diseases that are the leading causes of death could be triggered by inflammation. But we do have options if we choose to take them to try and increase our quality of life.
1. Reduce consumption fast food options to once a week.
2. Reduce or eliminate the amount of processed foods we eat on a weekly basis.
3. Reduce the amount of fat we eat in a day to under 40 grams.
4. Reduce your intake of salt by 50%.
5. Increase the amount of water intake per day to over 80 oz. for an adult over 100 lbs.
6. Increase your intake of fruit and vegetable to at least 8 per day.
7. Reduce traditional redmeat consumption down to 3 oz. per day.
8. Increase your daily aerobic exercise to 30-45 minutes a day for at least 5 days a week.
9. See a registered nutritionist and have them prepare a plan for you to reduce your body fat percentage to the normal levels for both men(15%) and women(20%).
10.Research liquid natural health supplements that have maximum antioxidants and start taking them on a daily basis.

There you have it. Using these easy changes and some common sense can help you improve your quality of life.

What is Blood Alcohol Content Level?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Amy Nutt

Your blood alcohol content, or blood alcohol level which it is sometimes referred, is the actual percentage of concentration of alcohol in your bloodstream. The legal limit can vary by state, and country, but for nearly everywhere in the United States and Canada, the legal limit for your blood alcohol content is .08, which means that less than one tenth of one percent of your blood is concentrated with alcohol when you are considered legally intoxicated.

Despite the popular misconception, there is no real definitive way for you to determine what your own blood alcohol content (BAC) is unless you've got access to a breathalyzer. There are so many factors that have bearing on your BAC that trying to calculate the number own your own is really nothing more than a guessing game.

Things like: your own tolerance built up over the time that you've been drinking alcohol, what types of drinks you are consuming on a given night, what kind of food you ate before you began drinking and what type of food (if any) you are munching on while you are drinking, your gender and your percentage of body fat are all things that can weigh pretty heavily on what your actual BAC is on a given night. Believe it or not, other things can factor into the equation as well - if you have been or are currently suffering from an illness (even something like the common cold), your level of fatigue and your level of hydration can all also have a bearing on your BAC.

So there's no magic spread sheet that you can download from the internet, and no magic mathematical equation that your friend's room mate came up with that will tell you with one hundred percent accuracy what you BAC is, because it can change for any number of reasons on any given night. Even if you drank five beers last night and a breathalyzer gave a reading of .10, that's no guarantee that if you drink five beers tonight that the reading will be exactly the same.

If you're tired or hungry, thirsty or stuffy or if you are drinking a different type of alcohol (even if you're drinking less of it than your regular drink of choice) than you normally consume you may be effected entirely differently than you may be expecting and that result can be reflected in your BAC.

There are also plenty of myths that go around about someone's ability to manipulate their BAC and level of intoxication by participating in some extraordinarily easy activities, but in reality the only thing that can lower your BAC is time. Things like: drinking lots of coffee, performing vigorous physical activity or jumping into an ice cold shower will have no effect what so ever on your BAC - stopping your consumption of alcohol and letting an adequate amount of time pass is all you can do to bring your BAC back to a normal level.

It takes an average person about one hour to metabolize the amount of alcohol contained in one standard alcoholic beverage (one 12 oz beer, one glass of wine or one shot.) So if you knock back a six pack of your favorite brew while watching the ball game at your buddies house, you better be prepared to spend the night or call a cab to get home unless your planning on waiting until the wee hours of the morning for your body to be able to metabolize all that alcohol so your BAC can drop back down to well below the legal limit before you get on the road.

It doesn't matter if you feel fine, or even if you just had a cup of java and ran around the block - you may still be over the legal limit - one way to approximate the calculation of the level of alcohol in your blood is using a BAC calculator. However, the safest thing to do when you are drinking is to stay where you are, or have someone who hasn't been drinking at all drive you home.

ACL: Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The Haves and the Have Nots.

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by: John Platero
National Council of Certified Personal Trainers

I’m currently contemplating replacing my ACL within 6 weeks, so here are some interesting facts I’ve learned.

· Researchers have shown the knee cruciate ligaments are loaded in the opposite manner from each other during movement and are loaded differently when in WB (Weight-bearing) and NWB (Non-Weight Bearing).

Anterior cruciate ligament strain is greater than posterior ligament (PCL) during NWB knee extension, whereas PCL strain is greater that ACL strain during WB knee extension.

· Joint surface gliding may be exaggerated in knees with injured ACL’s during WB and NWB. Therefore, PICR (path of instantaneous centers of rotation) may differ between WB and NWB.

· Evidence shows the hamstring muscles contribute to knee joint stability. In the absence of the structural integrity of the ACL, hamstring muscle co-contraction is thought to provide stability during knee extension either by virtue of its posteriorly directed force, its contribution to increase joint compression, or a combination of both mechanisms. An increase in hamstring muscle activity may be sufficient to counteract the increased gliding that might otherwise be present.

· Several studies indicate that people with an injured ACL or reconstructed ACL demonstrate greater hamstring muscle EMG activity or altered hamstring muscle timing during functional activities than do subjects without knee pathology.

· The MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament), LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament) and meniscus are secondary anterior stabilizers of the knee joint and provide stabilization in the absence of an intact ACL. Combined, these structures contribute only up to 14% of the total resistance to the anterior tibial displacement.

Oral Cheliation and Its Harmful Effects

Abnormal Ovarian Cysts : Types, Causes and Treatments

ป้ายกำกับ:

Abnormal ovarian cysts are very different from functional cysts since they have resulted from abnormal cell growth. However, that need not mean that they are all cancerous as most of them are simple benign growths. And none knows for sure what has caused them to grow. However, abnormal ovarian cysts that include cystadenoma cyst, dermoid cyst, endometrioma cyst or Chocolate cyst and 'polycystic ovarian cyst' are believed to occur due to imbalance of 'female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) and a multitude of other direct and indirect reasons. In many women, these cysts have remained all through their lives without the host being aware of their presence. But in some rare cases, they may burst, needing immediate surgical interference.

Cystadenoma cysts

These abnormal ovarian cysts develop from cells on the outer surface of the ovaries and can grow to a very large size. Mucinous Cystadenoma cysts take the form of biggest tumours in women often weighing approximately 328 lb or around 149 kg, These cysts reportedly occur at an early age and the cyst turned tumour happens to be unilateral and are often found attached to the ovary by a stem. As there is a rare chance of these cysts or tumours turning malignant, they may be classified historically and treated accordingly. Falling under the category of asymptomatic cysts, they may be found in the form of large abdominal mass during a routine check up of a person complaining abdominal pain and associated distressing condition.

Dermoid cyst or teratomas

As a fairly bizarre phenomenon, Dermoid cysts, clinically termed as 'cystic teratoma' are classed more as tumours than cysts. In fact, they are solid structures filled with pieces of bone, hair, teeth and skin, as well as hair follicles, pockets of blood, sebum and in some cases 'thyroid tissue'. Though they are normally benign, the rarely occurring malignant dermoid cyst usually develops as 'squamous cell carcinoma' in adults. Incidentally, a Pilonidal cyst often resembles dermoid cyst in several ways, the most significant resemblance concern the presence of Germ Cell Tumour. In case of any evasive surgery care must be taken so that there is no spillage while the opinion of an oncologist will be helpful.

Periorbital Dermoid Cysts

Even the kids are not spared of Dermoid cysts - often kids get them close to the eyebrow's lateral aspect and they feel like rubber. When the cysts are seen, medical practitioners sometimes keep them under observation and at other times they are surgically removed. However when they are meddled with, the cysts may lead to an inflammation. And even after treatment, the cyst may make a comeback, particularly if the entire growth has not been removed. But the problem is, the complete cyst can often be difficult to remove with surgery, particularly when it is a 'Dumbbell Configuration', in which, it needs to be cut along the suture line of the skull.

Endometrial cysts or Chocolate cysts

Endometriosis is a medical terminology that indicates a condition when the endometrium or the lining of the womb begins to grow in parts of the body other than the womb. These endometrial patches also forms on the ovaries, creating cysts popularly known as Chocolate cysts as they are invariably filled with chocolate coloured pre-stored blood. During the menstrual period every month, these endometrial patches of tissues that have been encapsulated in cyst will also bleed, but since there is no outlet for bleeding, the cyst go on getting larger in size and eventually may burst.

Polycystic ovarian cyst

Cysts forming from small egg follicles causing ovaries to get thickened and enlarged, often accompanied by hormonal imbalance in women are known as polycystic ovarian cyst that grow in numbers.

Holistic approach as plausible cure

Since OTC medications and prescription drugs can hardly solve the problem of abnormal ovarian cysts in your body and surgical removal of the cyst involves many factors that may not prove beneficial, a holistic approach towards a plausible cure seems to be the best answer. You need also to remember that the surgical removal of a cyst is not foolproof since a recurrence can never be ruled out.

The holistic approach to the cure is more practical too as the cyst formation involves a multitude of factors starting from hormonal imbalance to psychological trauma. Besides, the holistic approach will add newer dimension towards the treatment that includes change of food habits, change of lifestyle and appropriate physical exercise, topics hitherto unheard of as right line of treatment for abnormal ovarian cysts.

Ovarian cysts can happen from many contributing factors. And since holistic medicines treat the body as a whole, they are often more effective.

Having Engorged Breast While Giving Milk

ป้ายกำกับ:

By: Jody Siena

Within the first two to three days after you have given birth, you may discover that your breasts feel swollen, tender, throbbing, lumpy, and overly full. Sometimes, the swelling will extend all the way to your armpit, and you may run a low fever as well.

The causes

Within 72 hours of giving birth, an abundance of milk will come in or become available to your baby. As this happens, more blood will flow to your breasts and some of the surrounding tissue will swell. The result is full, swollen, engorged breasts.

Not every postpartum mom experienced true engorgement. Some women's breasts become only slightly full, while others find their breasts have become amazingly hard. Some women will hardly notice the pain, as they are involved in other things during the first few days. Treating it

Keep in mind, engorgement is a positive sign that you are producing milk to feed to your baby. Until you produce the right amount:

1. Wear a supportive nursing bra, even at night - making sure it isn't too tight.

2. Breast feed often, every 2 - 3 hours if you can. Try to get the first side of your breasts as soft as possible. If your baby seems satisfied with just one breast, you can offer the other at the next feeding.

3. Avoid letting your baby latch on and suck when the areola is very firm. To reduce the possibility of nipple damage, you can use a pump until your areola softens up. 4. Avoid pumping milk except when you need to soften the areola or when your baby is unable to latch on. Excessive pumping can lead to the over production of milk and prolonged engorgement.

5. To help soothe the pain and relieve swelling, apply cold packs to your breasts for a short amount of time after you nurse. Crushed ice in a plastic bag will also work.

6. Look ahead. You'll get past this engorgement in no time and soon be able to enjoy your breast feeding relationship with your new baby.

Engorgement will pass very quickly. You can expect it to diminish within 24 - 48 hours, as nursing your baby will only help the problem. If you aren't breast feeding, it will normally get worse before it gets better. Once the engorgement has passed, your breasts will be softer and still full of milk. During this time, you can and should continue to nurse. Unrelieved engorgement can cause a drop in your production of milk, so it's important to breast feed right from the start. Keep an eye for signs of hunger and feed him when he needs to be fed.

Fight Ileocecal Valve Syndrome With Fiber And Good Nutrition

ป้ายกำกับ:

by Darrell Miller

The ileocecal valve, which is made up of sphincter muscles that close the ileum, prevents toxins and other materials that are released by the appendix from entering into the small intestine. Additionally, the ileocecal valve helps to keep digested material in the small intestine until all of the nutrients have been absorbed. When the food residue is ready for elimination, the small intestine mixes bile, mucus, and other excretions with the food residue and releases it systematically through the ileocecal valve into the large intestine. This process prevents an overload of material in the intestine for the body to eliminate.

When the toxic material of the colon is able to enter back into the intestine, where it becomes rapidly reabsorbed, ileocecal valve syndrome occurs, which can lead to infection and disease. Symptoms of ileocecal valve syndrome include constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, irregular bowel movements, lower right bowel tenderness, acne, immune weakness, migraines, and duodenal ulcers.

To avoid ileocecal valve syndrome one should eat a diet that is high in fiber and includes whole grains. These whole grains should be soaked and cooked in order to avoid irritating the valve. Foods that cause constipation such as diary products, meat, and bananas should be avoided. Raisins, figs, and stewed prunes should be eaten for breakfast. More fresh fruits and vegetables should be added to the diet. Softer raw vegetables such as leaf lettuce, spinach, avocados, sprouts, and tomatoes should be used first.

Additionally, one should reduce the amount of meat that they eat and take a fiber supplement in order to avoid constipation. Fasting on juices two or three days a week will help to speed the healing process of the digestive tracts. Grains that are thermos-cooked are healing on the digestive tract and rich in enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and protein. The slow cooking process protects the body from destruction of vital enzymes. Milet, buckwheat, and basmati brown rice can also be eaten for breakfast, as they are easy for the body to digest and extremely nourishing. Raw vegetables and fruits, steamed vegetables, yams, and avocados are all also extremely helpful in healing the digestive tract, so they are recommended.

Nutritional supplements that can assist with ileocecal valve syndrome include antioxidants, vitamin A, B-complex, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, calcium, magnesium, essential fatty acids, blue-green algae, acidophilus, and plant digestive enzymes. Also, aloe vera juice, cat's claw, grape seed extract, pau d'arco, licorice, goldenseal, slippery elm, and comfrey are great herbal aids for helping for ileocecal valve syndrome.

Colon health is a lot more important than most people realize, as the digestive process is directly related to the health of the body, immune system function, and overall longevity. When any disease occurs, the colon should be the first thing looked to for treatment. By understanding what it means to have a healthy colon, adding fiber, nutritional supplements, herbal aids, and a change in diet, one can promote overall colon health. Eating habits should be changed slowly and unhealthy, nutrition robbing foods should be eliminated from the diet and replaced with whole grain foods, fruits, and vegetables.

The New Way to Remove Visual Problems Eliminating Glasses and Contacts

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Jayesh Bagde

Lasik Surgery is the latest innovative way to correct visual problems. This is the best procedure to take, both for near-sighted and far-sighted eye problems.

Lasik surgery nowadays is the most popular surgical procedure to correct visual problems. This is a laser-assisted surgical operation done on the retina. The small instrument used by surgeons to cut the cornea is called Microkeratome. There is also a newly-developed technology using laser energy, a chill ultraviolet light flash called the IntraLase. This laser energy is now used to assist eye surgeons in this surgical procedure, thus lessening the danger of Lasik surgery.

The surgeon removes some of the corneal tissues under to reshape it. The objective of this removal is to reshape the cornea to refocus the light into the eye passing through the retina, providing better vision. For near-sightedness, the target is to level the cornea. In far-sighted persons, a sharper curve on the cornea is preferred. Astigmatism also can be corrected through this procedure by smoothing out some irregular corneal shape that causes the problem.

But before taking this kind of procedure, it is must to know some steps or preparation. First, you should know how to choose the best Lasik surgeon. Although this procedure is not as complicated as any other surgical procedure, it’s better to find out for the best results. Finding a good refractive surgeon is not just through advertisements. Some ads, though informative, are not all true; they are just good as your starting point in finding one. Do not make a decision based on just what the ads want to express or the prices they offer.

Check if they are at least associated with any academic, medical centers because they are likely to be currently informed of the latest innovation and techniques about eye surgeries. They are more exposed and updated with any related procedures and problems that may arise in relation to Lasik surgery. Ask for a referral from your regular eye care consultant. Check your local Ophthalmology association or visit their website and look for their specialization. Ask for an appointment and meet with them, ask some intentional question like:
• How long they have been doing these surgical procedures.
• How many procedures they did and the intention of the surgical treatments.
• Percentage of success of the procedures they did.
• Any malpractice complaint or insurance coverage failure.
• About their license, issuance, any revocation or suspension.
• Any conviction of felony?
Before deciding, always ask for a second opinion.

Lasik surgery is an outpatient surgical procedure, which means that you will walk in to the center, have this eye procedure and then walk out afterwards. In fact, the surgery procedure will only take less than five minutes and you are also awake all through out the procedure. This operation is highly delicate and a very highly skilled surgeon with the proper tools must only do it.

During the surgery, the doctor will only give you a mild sedative and then the eye will be anesthetized with a special eye drop. You are told to lie down directly under the laser and a retainer will be placed over your eye to keep it open. A pressurized suction ring is also used to keep your eye pressured. The doctor then can easily cut through your cornea flap. A marker is also used to mark the cut and the corneal flap is created by the use of laser or by the Microketome.

To precisely adjust the laser, the doctor uses a computer. You will be directed to focus on a particular target for a brief period while adjusting. The doctor watches your eye through a microscope while pulses of light are sent through your cornea. The laser light pulses, painlessly reshapes your cornea. The length of the surgery is all dependent on the amount of prescription you need, the higher the prescription the longer the surgical time. Medication maybe prescribed after the operation to minimize any pain after the operation.

Just like any surgical procedure, it is very important to follow all the doctor’s instructions precisely. You must rest for sometime, take some of the prescribed medicine, and must call the doctor immediately if you suspect any problem. Avoid any thing that will traumatize your healing process and rubbing your eyes has a big chance of ruining your eye operation.

After your operation, your vision may improve right away but in some instances, gradual improvement is experienced, some after the next day and some after few days. Most patients achieved a total vision improvement, regaining their 20/20 vision rate but others get a 20/40, but this is a fairly good vision. Statistic says that 93% of those who have undergone Lasik surgery are very satisfied with their operation.

Is it Tiredness, Fatigue Or Exhaustion? Understanding Your Symptoms

ป้ายกำกับ:

By M.C. Makr

When you are feeling run down and can't keep up, you may describe your symptoms as being tired, exhausted or fatigued. Although we commonly use these as interchangeable words to describe what we are feeling, in medical terms they mean very different things. Understanding the symptoms of each can help us better explain how we feel and ultimately lead us to find a solution for the problem.

There are different types of being tired. The type of fatigue that is felt by a cancer patient for example is not the same type of fatigue that we feel at the end of a very long day.

Tiredness differers from fatigue because although you may not feel like it, your body still has some energy left to tap in to. The symptoms of tiredness include a feeling of heaviness and weakness in muscles, forgetfulness and impatience. Tiredness is common, especially if you have run yourself weary and haven't taken time to relax. Most of the time, all it takes is rest for us to recover from a bout of tiredness.

Fatigue is a different animal. A person who is suffering from fatigue will have difficulty concentrating, a decrease in physical ability and stamina, difficulty sleeping, and may turn away from social activities that they once enjoyed. Fatigue, unlike tiredness, is not a transient state that can be cleared up with a nap or rest.

Further up the scale is exhaustion. Exhaustion is characterized by confusion, delirium, numbness, difficulty staying awake and difficulty falling asleep as well as complete withdrawal from others. Exhaustion is a serious situation that points to a deeper problem than simple tiredness. Anyone who is experiencing this degree of a problem needs to consult with their doctor promptly.

Once you understand where on the scale your symptoms are, you can choose an appropriate course of action to start feeling better. Tiredness responds to rest and regular exercise can also help prevent future episodes. For the person with fatigue, you need to determine if there is an underlying cause for your condition or it it is a lifestyle issue that needs to be addressed. Fatigue is not always a serious condition, but it can lead to or indicate other health problems if it continues too long. Exhaustion may require medical intervention and you should see your doctor if your symptoms are that extreme.

Most often when we are worn out and run down, we are experiencing tiredness. Fortunately, we can take steps to correct the problem before it becomes a burden or a cycle of frequent tiredness. Typically, there are sleep issues, nutritional problems, or other lifestyle issues such as long working hours, stress, shift work or similar at play when a person experiences frequent tiredness. Determining the cause of your tiredness and taking steps to correct it will have you feeling energetic and healthy once again.

What Causes Chronic Tiredness and How to Solve It

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By M.C. Makr

Chronic tiredness can be the result of a physical problem or an illness. Or, it could the caused by stress and difficult situations. Often, feeling tired all the time without other symptoms is the result of sleep problems that you may not even be aware of. Understanding the cause of your exhaustion and ruling out the more serious possibilities will help you find out how to make adjustments to your lifestyle so you stop feeling tired.

Did you know that inactivity and excessive rest can actually make your more tired? If you are feeling sluggish, it may be your first instinct to lay down but in actuality, this is doing you more harm than good. Regular exercise is a popular and effective way to increase your energy levels.

Stress is a major energy zapper for even the healthiest people. Difficult times during our lives can leave us feeling emotionally drained and physically drained as a result. For some, this lasts so long that it becomes a case of clinical depression. Coping with stress and using relaxation techniques can help minimize the impact of tough times and seeking help when it becomes necessary is another way to get back on track.

If you are overweight or underweight, this may play a role in your exhaustion. Those that are very thin lack the muscle to make it through the day without feeling run down. Others that are overweight make their bodies work harder to carry extra weight, leading to chronic tiredness and fatigue. Maintaining normal body weight and muscle mass will keep your body in optimal shape to keep up with you.

You may have a sleep condition like sleep apnoea which can also cause you to feel tired. Sleep apnoea is a condition where breathing is abnormal during sleep. Eventually it can cause problems with oxygen levels in the brain. People with sleep apnoea have a tendancy to snore often, so if you have ever been told that you are a loud sleeper and you are coping with chronic tiredness, this is something to consider. Other less serious sleep problems can also cause tiredness, such as keeping a schedule that interrupts your body's natural sleep patterns.

If you suspect you may be ill or pregnant, see your doctor for a checkup. You may have blood work drawn to look for common causes of exhaustion such as low iron levels and blood sugar problems. Often, there is nothing physically wrong in which case you need to look to lifestyle factors and sleep patterns to determine the cause of your exhaustion.

Fortunately, chronic tiredness is not something that you have to accept and live with. Once you find out what the cause of your exhaustion, you can make changes and start working towards a solution and get your energy back.

Prenatal Testing: Making an Informed Choice on Ultrasound, Amniocentesis, CVS and the Triple Screen Test

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by: Katharina Bishop

I'm an advocate of truly having your eyes opened and honestly appraising how much power you really have, not pretending that you will have as much power as you desire, just because you really want it. I think that's the essence of informed consent. - Gretchen Humphries

In the course of her pregnancy journey, a pregnant woman will be offered a wide variety of medical tests. The terms for many of these, such as amniocentesis and sonogram, are well known amongst the general population, indicating that these prenatal tests, while originally created to test certain high-risk pregnancy situations, have become standard procedures.

Many pregnant women accept the tests offered to them, without being informed on the side effects, complications and implications of positive test results. It is generally felt that these tests can do no harm. However, some of them have never been rigorously studied for safety to mother and child, and may present physical risks to both. Moreover, prenatal tests may give rise to concerns and anxiety, the very emotions that expecting mothers had hoped to avoid by agreeing to them. Test results can be vague and, more importantly, they can be misleading.

Before any type of medical procedure is carried out, medical professionals are obligated to obtain the patient's consent. It is important to distinguish between consent and informed consent. Informed consent can only be given when the patient fully understands what will happen to them and their unborn child before proceeding with any type of testing or treatment. Nowadays, many tests are prescribed by doctors who simply assume that their patients understand what the tests are meant to assess, as well as their risks to mother and baby.

Specifically, informed consent means a clear understanding of how the procedure is administered, and of the risks associated with it, full knowledge of the alternatives (is there another test or procedure that poses less risk?), careful consideration of the physical and emotional impacts, and the freedom to say no.

In order to give informed consent, it is important to understand the tests and procedures that are routinely administered during pregnancy. The most popular ones, ultrasound, the triple screen, amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling, are discussed below.

Ultrasound (Sonogram)

An ultrasound exam is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create a picture (sonogram) of the baby and placenta. Ultrasound is used for two purposes. It may be used in cases where the woman has a known medical condition, or where previous tests have indicated a risk. More often, however, ultrasound is performed as a routine procedure during pregnancy to screen for potential problems, even where the woman is not at any particular risk. Most ultrasound exams last only a few minutes. The procedure is painless for the mother, although the full bladder that is usually required may cause some discomfort. Further uses of ultrasound include the Doppler, or Doptone, a small handheld device used to hear the baby's heartbeat after the tenth week, and electronic fetal monitors (EFMs), used by most hospital maternity wards to monitor the baby's heart rate during labor. In general, ultrasound is more accurate to explore a specific situation, such as a predicted miscarriage, than when used in a generalized, routine way.

Ultrasound is generally seen as very safe. However, The National Institutes of Health (USA) cautions against routine use of ultrasound, suggesting that "the data on clinical efficacy and safety do not allow recommendation for routine screening at this time; there is a need for multidisciplinary randomized controlled clinical trials for an adequate assessment."(1) The World Health Organization (WHO) also urges prudence: "Ultrasound screening during pregnancy is now in widespread use without sufficient evaluation. Research has demonstrated its efficacy for certain complications of pregnancy but the published material does not justify the routine use of ultrasound in pregnant women."(2)

The Triple Screen

This blood test is usually carried out between the sixteenth and eighteenth week of pregnancy. It measures the levels of three chemicals in the mother's blood: hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) and estriol, which are produced by the placenta, and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), which is produced by the fetus. It does not identify the existence of any specific abnormality, only the presence of chemicals that are indicators of a risk. The test is done to evaluate the risk of Down syndrome, spina bifida (a disorder where part of the spinal cord develops outside of the baby's body), anencephaly (where the skull fails to grow over the brain), and other abnormalities. If a fetus has Down syndrome, for instance, the hCG levels in the mother's blood are often higher than normal, while estriol and AFP levels are often lower. High levels of AFP, on the other hand, may indicate risk of a neural tube defect such as spina bifida or anencephaly. Factors such as the mother's age, weight, and ethnicity, whether she is diabetic, if she is having twins or other multiples and the gestational age of the fetus all influence the levels of the substances being measured and need to be taken into account in interpreting the test result. Generally, if a woman receives a result indicating risk, she will be advised to take the test again. If she receives a second result indicating risk, further testing, such as ultrasound and amniocentesis, will be recommended, along with genetic counseling.

The triple screen is an elective test. It is not medically necessary. It is important to consider that this test does not identify the existence of any specific abnormality, but only the presence of chemicals that may indicate risk. Test results are thus inconclusive and open to interpretation. For instance, while high levels of AFP are associated with spina bifida, they may also indicate the presence of more than one fetus. Low AFP levels associated with risk of Down syndrome can simply mean that the fetus is younger than was previously thought. The triple screen test is the least invasive of all prenatal tests, but it has a high rate of false positives, which incorrectly indicate risk in healthy pregnancies, resulting in weeks of anxiety while further tests are evaluated. Between 96 and 98 percent of women who first receive a positive triple screen result will go on to have normal babies, making the risks of this test emotional rather than physical.

Amniocentesis

During this procedure a thin, hollow needle is inserted into the mother's uterus through her abdomen and a small amount of amniotic fluid (the fluid that surrounds the fetus) is removed and tested. The amniotic fluid has passed in and out of the fetus' body, and therefore contains some of the baby's cells. These cells are used to obtain information about the baby's genetic makeup and the potential for genetically inherited diseases. Conditions tested for include Down syndrome, spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs, sickle-cell anemia, and anencephaly. Amniocentesis carries a miscarriage risk of 1 to 3 percent, almost three times the miscarriage rate in a pregnancy where amniocentesis has not been performed. Side effects of the procedure itself include cramping, bleeding, and leaking of amniotic fluid. These side effects may be minor, or severe. Women whose tests have to be re-administered double their risk of miscarriage, from 3 to 6 percent.

Before agreeing to this procedure, it is very important to consider the implications of a positive test result. For women who feel the need to emotionally prepare themselves for a sick, disabled, or dying newborn, amniocentesis may be a useful test. Amniocentesis is also performed for women who consider terminating a pregnancy with a serious birth defect. Mothers who feel that amniocentesis results won't change their intention to carry a pregnancy to term or to parent a child with a birth defect may wish to consider not taking the risks associated with this test.

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)

Using ultrasound as a guide, a thin tube is inserted through the vagina and cervix and a tiny tissue sample from the chorion (the outer sac that surrounds the embryo during the first two months of pregnancy) is gathered along with the villi (hair-like tissues that protrude from the chorion). These are then studied to assess the fetal chromosomes for genetic abnormalities. CVS is usually performed around the tenth week. It is an elective test and is not medically necessary. CVS is generally reserved for cases in which earlier knowledge is important to the mother due to a high genetic risk for certain diseases. It is not as accurate as amniocentesis in assessing the presence of Down syndrome, and it is not capable of assessing the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

CVS carries a miscarriage risk of 1 to 5 percent, a higher rate than amniocentesis, and nearly six times the average miscarriage rate. The risk is lower when inserting the needle through the abdomen (as is more common now) rather than through the vagina. Other suspected complications associated with CVS include higher rates of preterm birth, limb and facial deformities, cervical lacerations, and maternal infection. Problems are more likely to occur if the test is carried out before ten weeks. CVS has higher rates of false positives and failed tests, where the procedures have to be repeated, than amniocentesis.

Making an Informed Choice

Prenatal tests, especially if administered routinely and frequently, serve to ‘medicalize' a pregnancy. By transforming a healthy pregnancy into a medical experience, tests can cause unnecessary worry and stress. Parents may not permit themselves to bond with their developing baby until test results have ‘proven' that everything is okay. Mothers who are especially nervous and seek reassurance by having these tests may want to take into account that test results can be misleading unless there is a true indication of high risk. In order to make an informed choice it is important to reflect on each step of the decision, and review the possible consequences of prenatal tests. It may prove helpful to discuss any concerns with a sympathetic doctor or midwife before making a decision that is right for you.

A New Test to Detect Osteoarthritis Early… Will it Help?

ป้ายกำกับ:

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It affects more than 20 million Americans according to some estimates. Because osteoarthritis (OA) is primarily a degenerative process, the incidence and prevalence of this disorder is expected to rise with the surge in Baby Boomers.

OA affects weight-bearing joints such as the knee and hip. It is a disease of articular cartilage, the tough, elastic material that cushions moving parts of joints. OA is the most common reason for eventual total hip and total knee replacement surgery.

It has been felt that early diagnosis of this condition could potentially lead to earlier treatment.

To date, treatment for osteoarthritis has centered on pain relief only. To that end oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen (Motrin), aproxyn (Naprosyn), sulindac (Clinoril), piroxicam (Feldene), nabumetone (Relafen), etodolac (Lodine), ketoprofen (Orudis), meloxicam (Mobic), and celecoxib (Celebrex) have been used with varying degrees of success.

Along with these medicines, analgesic medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), propoxyphene (Darvon), and tramadol (Ultram) have also been used to manage symptoms.

Other modalities such as physical therapy, braces, lateral wedge insoles inside shoe, arthroscopy (entering the joint with a small telescope to remove damaged and diseased tissue), injections of glucocorticoid (“cortisone”), and injections of lubricants, called viscosupplements, have also been used to alleviate symptoms.

Despite the mixed effectiveness these various treatments have had as far as pain control, they have not been completely successful.

The reason? The Holy Grail of OA treatment has been to identify treatments that can slow down and possibly reverse cartilage deterioration.

This is predicated on diagnosing the condition early. To date, diagnostic methods such as x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) do not detect the disease until OA is in advanced stages when joint damage may already have occurred.

Arthroscopy can detect early disease but is not practical because of the invasive nature of the procedure.

A method for earlier diagnosis could open a window of opportunity for preventing or reducing permanent damage. Recent evidence suggests that dietary supplements like glucosamine/chondroitin might prevent further joint deterioration. A recent study demonstrating a new medical imaging technology may provide physicians with an accurate test for early diagnosis of OA, scientists from New York reported at the 236th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society

"Our methods have the potential of providing early warning signs for cartilage disorders like osteoarthritis, thus potentially avoiding surgery and physical therapy later on," says Alexej Jerschow, Ph.D., who reported on the research jointly with Ravinder R. Regatte, Ph.D.

He adds, "Also, the effectiveness of early preventative drug therapies can be better assessed with these methods."

Cartilage consists of collagen and proteoglycans. Proteoglycans are long chains of linked sugars and proteins.

The new method uses a modified form of magnetic resonance imaging to determine the concentration of a polymer known as glycosaminogycan (GAG), a proteoglycan that holds lots of water and gives cartilage its tough, elastic properties. GAG also is a recognized biomarker for osteoarthritis.

According to the scientists, a low concentration of GAG is known to correlate with the onset of osteoarthritis and other cartilage disorders.

The diagnostic test utilizes a method that "tags" the hydrogen atoms attached to the GAGs in a way that makes them emit a signal that can be picked up by an MRI machine to determine the concentration of GAG and assess cartilage status.

The advantage of such a test is not only to detect early OA but also to assess the effectiveness of newer disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADS), which are currently being studied by a number of companies.

Discover Best Solutions To Remove Moles Permanently

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

Author: Divya

Moles are not liked by anyone, they will embarrass people. Hence many people want it to be removed as it spoils the look.

The two methods that are used to remove moles are by cutting off the mole and then put stitches or by burning the moles using a tool. The scientific names for these methods are excision and stitching, and excision and cauterization.

There is another method called as Laser treatment where a laser beam is penetrated through the skin and this beam has to remove the moles. Most of the dermatologists will not advice for Laser treatment as the beams do not remove the moles from the root of the skin. Depending on the type and size of the mole the excision methods are prescribed.

Moles are always considered as dark spots, birthmarks, skin allergies, keratoses or with some abnormal blood vessels. The doctors will differ in their opinion as the procedure involved in the removal of moles is entirely different from the procedure of removing skin marks.

Moles may appear due to many reasons. They may be hereditary or may develop at the time of birth or with the age. In some people the size the color the look and the development of the moles are dependent with exposure to the sun.

The mole removal method involve some risks as they may result in skin infection, skin allergy or may be even affect on the nervous system. A dermatologist with the best skills has to be consulted in order to avoid the side effects.

The risk will increase depending on where the mole is present and what method is being used for the removal of the mole. The doctor has to tell you about the type of mole and present a general idea on how the mole removal procedure will take place. There might be scars left behind after the surgery is complete, even this will be a risk.

The mole removal surgery procedure involves cleaning the area of the mole at the first and then numbing the area with a sort of anesthetic and the surgeon has to wait for about 20 minutes for the area to completely numb. Then a drape will be spread on you depending on the size of the mole and the type of mole removal procedure used. Using a scalpel the surgeon shaves the area of the mole. Then an instrument or a tool is used to burn the area of the mole, later the operated area is cleaned using a solution. The removal of the mole may result in bleeding; in order to stop the bleeding bandages are covered over the area. The wound must heal; hence the surgeon will prescribe antibiotics.

When the procedure is over, you will want to have a salve with antibiotics and bandages to keep the wound from getting infected. You will want to clean your wound once daily using every day water or even diluted hydrogen peroxide. Now you can go on with life blemish free once you have removed your moles.

Aaron Lilly a leading skin expert, from his years of research reveals an all natural mole removal which makes surgery obsolete. Breakfast Gets Your Body Systems on Track

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Wesley Beck

The meal a lot of people skip is breakfast but if you want to keep your body healthy and help you in your efforts to keep your weight in check then taking a few minutes in the morning to eat a healthy breakfast is a necessity.

When we awake each morning our body has not had food from 6 to 10 hr and has depleted nutrients it is unable to store, like protein. The body needs to be replenished and so the name break fast is a correct name for our first and most important meal. Breakfast is a very good source of energy we need to get started and function correctly through the day. Eating breakfast aids in disease prevention such as diabetes by helping maintain a balanced sugar level. It places some thing in our stomach so we are not as hungry at lunch and overeating helping prevent obesity which leads to heart disease and many other problems.

How to Preserve & Increase Your Metabolism and Burn the Fat!

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Stacey Zimmerman

Most diet programs and weight loss products would have you believe that you can lose weight healthily. However, nothing can be farther from truth than losing weight with these OTC products without having any affect on your metabolism. These so-called healthy weight loss products wreck havoc on your metabolism while you are following their routine. They contain unscientific and unproven contents that may have some beneficial qualities for the health of humans but certainly have horrendous side effects in terms of disturbed metabolism and resultant damage to the vital body organs.

In fact, several diet programs have resulted in breaking down of muscles and slowing down of metabolism, which if not addressed immediately, can lead to life-threatening repercussions. That's why doctors always recommend to stay from using any products from your nearest store in order to lose weight. Instead, they prescribe 3-pronged strategy for healthy weight loss - cardio exercise; regular, healthy, and balanced diet; and living a physically active lifestyle.

On the contrary, the aim of weight loss is to maximize the metabolism in order to make the functioning of all the vital organs in harmony for maximum benefits to the body. These diet programs will make you undergo strictest diet regimes and in the name of supplements, they'll just give you headaches, nausea, constipation, bloated feeling, etc. - all signs of disturbed metabolism. This is because the body lacks proper nutrition, which even these diet programs fail to provide.

After the above mentioned observations, we can safely conclude that losing fat without disturbing metabolism should be the target of every weight loss regimen. In fact, it'd be better if metabolism can be improved from its present situation. And the news is that all this is possible without resorting to any cosmetic product or powder or pills.

YES! This piece of news should come as a big relief for all those who are fed up with the diet programs and looking for natural mode of losing weight without causing any damage to their metabolism. If you search around the Internet, you'll find out about the ways of losing fat and preserving and speeding up the metabolism through healthier means. However, be warned! Internet is full of booby traps to lure you to some product or other. But if you are lucky enough to grab an informational book or resource, you are on your way to success.

If you can know the health secrets of famous personalities, your aim of losing fat healthily gets easier. Along with the health secrets, you should also learn some motivational techniques employed by these personalities to keep their spirits up. The bottom line is that most of us can be healthy and lose fat in the most natural way. If man can conquer Everest, then with some discipline in our lives, can we not beat the fat from our lives? We surely can and we definitely should!

Tendon Rupture: Signs and Symptoms

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Peter Kent

An Achilles tendon is a tendon located at the back of the lower leg and is connected to the heel bone. Achilles tendon rupture occurs when an individual tears the tendon, either partially or completely. Tendon rupture can occur in many instances and is caused by an array of physical activities. Most recently, however, one such activity that has been related to tendon rupture is occurring among patients who are consuming any one of the antibiotic drugs from the fluoroquinolone prescription drug family.

Symptoms of Tendon Tear

Achilles tendon ruptures can be extremely painful and usually an individual with a torn tendon will feel some or all of the following symptoms:

* Swelling and severe pain toward the heel
* Inability to walk normally, particularly an individual won’t be able to walk without experiencing pain
* The inability to place the entire foot downward will likely occur
* Those who have ruptured the tendon completely will be unable to raise toes on the injured leg

There is also the possibility that an individual has not torn the tendon, but will feel a number of similar symptoms. Two of the most common issues that are similar in appearance to tendon rupture are bursitis and tendonitis (tendonitis).

Bursitis is the inflammation or irritation of the bursa, which is located between the heel bone and the Achilles tendon. Additionally, the burase, which are miniscule fluid-filled sacs that float throughout the body providing a cushion to tendons, muscles and bones, may have become inflamed between the heel and Achilles tendon.

Tendonitis, however, is when the Achilles tendon becomes inflamed or is subject to a variety of miniscule tears. When an individual has tendonitis, the Achilles tendon will swell and become painful. While tendonitis occurs in many instances, it has also been linked to the consumption of the fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

Causes of Achilles Tendon Rupture

There are several factors that can lead to tendon rupture among patients. Some of these physical stressors on the tendon, according to the Mayo Clinic include:

* Flatfeet
* Worn out or ill-fitting
* Weak calf muscles
* Tight calf muscles
* Overuse of tendon muscles
* Not stretching or inadequate stretching
* Running on hills or hard surfaces

Additionally, the Achilles tendon can often be torn due to physical activities that require frequent stop and start footwork. However, doing simple activities such as gardening, cleaning or moving can also cause the Achilles tendon to tear. This is often due to the fact that a large amount of unusual stress is placed on the tendon. It is also true that even highly-conditioned athletes are at risk for a tendon rupture; nearly every individual is at risk for Achilles tendon tears.

Also, as an individual ages, the tendon becomes thin and weak from continual overuse throughout the years. This can increase the potential for tendon rupture as well.

Another less common, but rapidly increasing risk that may cause tendon rupture is occurring among patients undergoing antibiotic treatments of the fluoroquinolone drugs. These antibiotics have been flagged as a potential risk factor for causing tendon ruptures. The risk is so high that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently increased the labeling of all the fluoroquinolone drugs to a black box label, which is among the strongest labels given by the FDA. The labeling alerts physicians to the increased risk and will likely reduce the potential for prescribing one of these antibiotics to an "at-risk patient".

The group of fluoroquinolone drugs include the following:

* Levaquin (levofloxacin)
* Factive (gemifloxacin mesylate)
* Avelox (moxifloxacin HCL)
* Cipro XR and Proquin XR (ciprofloxacin extended release).
* Noroxin (norfloxacin).
* Floxin (ofloxacin).
* Cipro (ciprofloaxacin)

The above antibiotics are used to treat an array of bacterial infections ranging from pneumonia and bronchitis to skin or urinary tract infections to Chlamydia and even airborne anthrax infections. Individuals who have been a victim of the fluoroquinolone-induced tendon tear may have been prescribed one of the antibiotics anywhere from 6 weeks to 2 years prior to their Achilles rupture. Victims also ranged in age and type of infection.

Treating Tendon Rupture

In many instances, Achilles tendon rupture is only treatable through a surgical procedure in which stitching of the tendons back together occurs. An individual that undergoes this surgical procedure will likely be subject to a cast or boot as well as crutches to ensure the tendons heal properly. If an individual opts not to have surgery, they will likely need to wear a cast or boot for a longer period of time so that the tendons can reattach themselves. Both the surgical and non-surgical processes can be extremely painful and costly.

Individuals who feel that they may have suffered from tendon rupture or tendonitis due to consumption of the fluoroquinolone drug family are encouraged to contact an experienced pharmaceutical attorney. Because these injuries were caused by the drug’s side effects, a patient may be able to receive monetary compensation through a pharmaceutical lawsuit because of the pain and high costs of medical bills commonly associated with tendon rupture/tendonitis.

Living with Dyslexia

ป้ายกำกับ:

by: Mike Fak

This was what was supposed to be called a short work week but it was anything but for me. First off, all the organizations, state agencies and to a degree even the AP slowed down on sending in their releases. Of course most of them aren't worth printing but you can usually find a few nuggets amongst the self-serving balderdash. That meant I had to find stories without at least a few landing in my lap.

To make matters worse, I was being taught how to post all our AP articles since the publisher who usually does that will be taking some time off. Now posting takes about twelve steps per article and for the life of me I was having trouble remembering the sequence and the certain nuances that some of them have.

Thank God my son, who was doing his own job but was listening in, got it all as I don't think I have it yet. Yes, the youngster is already way ahead of me and doing just fine on the job. He has tried to encourage me when I forget a step or forget what comes next and he calmly shows me my errors and I move on. He has explained to me. "Dad, don't be discouraged. You know 90% of what to do. Of course the 10% you still don't know is crucial.

The real problem I have been having is because the step by step instructions are in plain English and when I get discouraged and lose my concentration, I can't read English. You see I am one of those millions of Americans who suffer from Dyslexia. It is a really strange malady and I imagine I am lucky that my case is mild or at least I have been able to control it over the years so that it seems mild. I can read a book for pleasure quite handily and I can look at other works as long as I am relaxed and concentrating. When I get flustered, or in a hurry or spend too much brain power worrying about why I can't get something, then the monster kicks in and the words start moving letters around and nothing makes sense to me.

MRI's have shown we dyslexics aren't using the correct spot in the brain when we read and there are varying degrees of this non-register of words into thoughts just as there are varying degrees of stroke damage.

When I type fast I also come out with some real douzies. I have never speed-typed Chicago right in my life. It always comes out Chicago every single time. Once in a while when I get pressed for time I look back at a misspelled word and it is so far removed from what it should be that I sometimes can't figure out what word it was I wanted to type.

Like I said, I am fine when I'm not flustered or in a rush and can concentrate but I am a rushing kind of person so it can be hard some days.

I'm fortunate that I have my little mentor right at home who I can yell to when I forget something I should be able to remember and can't see it on the sheet right in front of me. I'm lucky. The monster could have been worse.

Barrx - New Treatment Option For Barrett's Esophagus Sufferers

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Mary Ruff-King

Barrx Medical, a company with a laser-targeted mission of developing effective treatment for those who have Barrett's esophagus, may have just hit the proverbial medical jackpot. The company has developed an effective, safe, and minimally invasive treatment option for those suffering from this potentially pre-cancerous condition.

The beauty of the Barrx treatment is its simplicity in thought, design, and implementation. A minimally invasive procedure, an expanding balloon-catheter device called the Barrx Halo 360 System is inserted into a sedated patient's esophagus. Once the balloon is inflated, radio frequency is administered over sixty (60) individual bands tightly spaced over the balloon. Suspect tissue is burned away in a precise and uniform manner and depth. This is all done under direct visualization, so there is pinpoint accuracy. This medical procedure can be done in under 30 minutes, and resultant healthy tissue can reappear in as little as 3-4 weeks after the procedure. Better yet, in those patients followed for 6-7 months, 75% had elimination of their condition.

Since other treatment options for Barrett's esophagus have significant downsides as well as adverse side effects, this new treatment option is being met with great enthusiasm in the medical field. Early trials have shown that Barrx has either eliminated or reduced the disease by 85 percent, very significant since Barrett's esophagus is a condition that afflicts approximately three million people in the United States alone.

Those diagnosed with Barrett esophagus are 125 times more likely to develop esophageal adenocarcinoma, nearly fatal in all cases. It makes perfect sense to take a proactive approach and intervene before a pre-cancerous condition mutates to cancer, especially esophageal cancer, which now has the fastest growth rate in the United States. Barrx appears to be just what the doctor ordered and may become the gold standard for treatment of Barrett's esophagus in the future.

User guide for Peak flow meter

ป้ายกำกับ:

By: sbaijal

A peak flow meter for asthma is like a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure instrument) for hypertension or thermometer for a fever. Peak flow meter is a small hand held device that measures the fastest rate of air that a person can blow out of his lungs. It shows how well the airways are open. Here are some common questions that may arise in minds of people using a peak flow meter.

What are the uses of peak flow meter?

Peak flow meter is a valuable tool in the arsenal of patients to monitor asthma and to know before hand is there are any chances of impending asthma attack. The main indications are:

Determine the severity of asthma.
Check the response to treatment of asthma medication.
Monitor progress in treatment of asthma.
Provide objective information for any possible adjustments in therapy.
Detect worsening in lung function before hand and thereby avoid a possible serious flare-up in asthma with early intervention
One of the most important functions of the peak flow meter is to help you and your physician evaluate asthma severity.

You will see a drop in peak flow readings even before the symptoms of asthma (like coughing or wheezing) get worse.

Decreases in peak flow may indicate that you need to increase your medication. The earlier a warning sign is detected, the sooner the problem can be addressed.

How to use a Peak Flow Meter?

A peak flow meter helps you check how well your asthma is controlled. Peak flow meters are most helpful for people with moderate or severe asthma.

This article below will tell you:

(1) How to take your peak flow reading.

(2) How to find your personal best peak flow number,

(3) How to use your personal best number to set your peak flow zones, and

(4) When to take your peak flow to check your asthma each day.

How to take your peak flow reading?
A peak flow meter measures air flow, or peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR).

To take a peak flow reading you should:

First set the pointer at zero.
Should stand or sit in a comfortable, upright position.
Then hold the peak flow meter level (horizontally) and keep the fingers away from the pointer.
Now take a deep breath and close the lips firmly around the mouthpiece. Do not put your tongue inside the hole.
Then blow as hard and fast as you can.
Look at the pointer and check the reading. But if you cough by mistake then do the test again.
Reset the pointer back to zero.
The whole procedure is to be done three times and highest reading is to be recorded.

How to find your personal best Peak Flow number:

The personal best peak flow is the highest peak flow value a patient can achieve over a 2-3 week period when his or her asthma is under good control.

To find your personal best peak flow number, take your peak flow each day for 2 to 3 weeks.

Your asthma should be under good control during this time.

Take your peak flow as close to between noon and 2:00 p.m. each day. The highest peak flow number you had during the 2 to 3 weeks is your personal best. Personal best can change over time as disease is controlled or when child grows up.

Your physician will periodically readjust your personal best. Ask your doctor when to check for a new personal best.

Note: This time is only for taking the reading only for finding your personal best peak flow. To check your asthma each day, you will take your peak flow in the morning

How to use your personal best number to set your peak flow zones?

Knowing your personal best peak flow number can be very helpful in the management of asthma.

Your should keep a daily record of your peak flow readings. If your medicine is working you should see an improvement in your peak flow reading.

Traffic light system
Once you and your pulmonologist have established your personal best peak flow, you should make every effort to maintain values within 80 of personal best. All systems "go." You are relatively symptom-free and can maintain your current asthma management program. If you are on continuous medication and your peak flow is constantly in the green zone with minimal variation, your physician may consider gradually decreasing your daily medication.

Personal best PEFR *80 / 100 is lower limit of Green zone.

Yellow Zone:

PEFR 50-80 of personal best. "Danger," your asthma management and treatment program is failing to control your symptoms. Use your inhaled bronchodilator. If peak flow readings do not return to at least the yellow zone, contact your allergist/immunologist, who will help you employ aggressive therapy. Maintenance therapy will have to be increased.

Personal best PEFR * 50/100 is the highest limit of red zone.

These traffic light zones are broad guidelines designed to simplify asthma management. Successful control of asthma depends upon a partnership between the patient and the physician. This open communication and exchange of information can be improved with peak flow monitoring and reporting. Your physician can use this data to design and adjust your medication to achieve the best asthma control possible for you.
