Symptoms of Anxiety Controlling the Fear with Breathing

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Angus Fairley

We all experience a sense of unease, anxiety when we are faced with a stressful situation, such as an interview; exam or if we are worried about an illness and this is totally normal. Anxiety is only a problem when it becomes excessive.

Sadly for a great number suffering from anxiety disorders they are severe, prolonged and interfere with everyday activities. Such anxieties include phobias such as agoraphobia and sudden unexpected panic and anxiety attacks.

Generalized anxiety disorder is when you get a sudden surge of fear although no danger exists, adrenalin pours in as your body prepares for action, but as no action follows and there is no way for this nervous energy to be discharged, which lead to physiological confusion, or what we know as anxiety attack symptoms.

Your heart races, your mouth is dry, dizziness, over breathing, clammy hands, a lump in the throat, and what feels like a tight band around your head. These feelings build until clinging to anything that will support your shaking legs you fear you might burst a blood vessel or drop down dead any minute.

Apart from the obvious symptoms of the anxiety attack you may also experience other psychological symptoms such as tiredness, insomnia, feeling uneasy all the time, unable to concentrate and may even think that you are going mad.

It is always wise to visit a health practitioner as sometimes anxiety disorder symptoms can be linked to a physical illness like a thyroid disorder. It may be the symptom of another mental health problem such as alcohol dependence, depression or separation anxiety in which case counseling will be beneficial. It can also be caused by substances like caffeine, and ecstasy, or if you are withdrawing from long-term use of tranquillizers.

Your physician will be able to decide what anxiety treatment is necessary and talk over any anxiety medication side effects should he decide to prescribe any medicines.

When you are anxious you often don’t realize that you are breathing wrong and this can be one of the main cause of the feelings of anxiety. Learning to breath correctly can change a nervous wreck into a relaxed person.

To check your breathing stand up with one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest, breathe normally and note which hand is moving. If the hand on your chest is still and the lower hand is moving then you are breathing from the bottom of your lungs and using your diaphragm correctly.

If not you should place your hands together on top of your stomach with your two middle fingers touching, and then try to breathe them apart. Practice this daily until it becomes automatic, as it is no good to think about this when you are in the middle of an anxiety attack, but practicing before hand can lessen its effects and may prevent it from happening.

However there is an emergency measure if you have lost control of your breathing during an attack so keep a paper bag handy. This is not as silly as it sounds, as when you exhale into a paper bag and then breath in the same air, you correct the balance by re-breathing the carbon dioxide, which you have lost. This regulates your breathing and the panic will subside.

The Truth About Mild Dehydration

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By Janet Martin

Many people are actually suffering from mild dehydration without really realizing it. Since the symptoms of mild dehydration are subtle, people really don't realize that they are not drinking enough water until it is too late.

You need to understand the importance of water or fluids in maintaining your health. You can survive without food for weeks, but you can not stay alive without water for a few days. The human body is composed of about 70% water, but you are losing a substantial amount of water everyday through your urine, stool, and perspiration. Thus, you need to replenish the lost fluids by drinking juice, water or even eating soup, fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of water.

Symptoms Of Dehydration

As mentioned earlier, the signs of mild dehydration are subtle. You might probably think that the problems you are experiencing have nothing to do with dehydration. Headaches, changes in your moods, slow movement and lethargy are just some of the early signs of this condition. Some people also report dry nasal passages, tiredness, confusion, and even cracked lips.

You should be alarmed if your urine is already dark and you feel weak all over your body. Some patients even complain of hallucinations. If you still do nothing about your problem, soon your urination will completely stop and eventually, your kidneys will start to fail. Dehydration is a serious condition so you should not disregard the symptoms. Worst case scenario for you is death.

Causes Of Dehydration

Not drinking enough water is not really the only cause of dehydration. Sometimes, when the weather is hot, you sweat more so you lose water through perspiration. When you have fever or you exercise regularly, you may also want to drink a little more.

The elderly are also more prone to dehydration because the part of their brain that indicates thirst may not already function that well. As a result, old individuals tend to forget to drink. Furthermore, seniors usually take maintenance medication, such as hypertension drugs, that may be diuretic. So aside from not drinking lots of water, they also urinate a lot more.

Lastly, certain conditions, such as diarrhea or cholera, can also contribute to dehydration. If you have loose bowel movement and you vomit a lot, you are also losing a lot of water.

Effects Of Mild Dehydration

Now that you know the importance of water, you should be aware of the long-term effects of chronic mild dehydration. First, your salivary gland functions will start to diminish. And this will make you feel parched and thirsty. Next, you may also find that you are sluggish or slow and your mental abilities start to diminish. You may also be at an increased risk of developing illnesses such as colon and breast cancer, constipation and kidney stones, and urinary tract infection. You may also suffer from water retention or edema because your body will try to hold on to more water inside in an attempt to make sure that your bodily functions will continue to work without a hitch.

However, if your edema or water retention is not due to dehydration but rather because of hormonal imbalance experienced during menopause or monthly menses, then you may also take herbal supplements like Expelis to eliminate excess water inside your body. Of course, you still have to make sure that you are drinking more water.

The Dummies Guide to Curing Heartburn

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Aaron Walker

The term heartburn is used to describe a feeling that people get that isn't actually anything to do with their heart at all. That awful sensation that wells up in your chest isn't even remotely related to your heart; it actually starts in your gut. Heartburn or acid reflux as it's otherwise known starts with a problem with the control of the acid in your stomach.

The pain you feel during a bout of heartburn is down to the acid from your stomach moving back up your throat towards your mouth. Now bearing in mind that the acid in your stomach is hydrochloric acid (strong enough to melt metal) your throat (your esophagus) is going to be severely irritated by this acid. It's actually burning away at your flesh which is what causes that intense pain in and around your chest.

How often you actually get heartburn and how severe it is depends on a lot of factors such as stress and especially what types of foods you eat a lot. Spicy foods or foods that have a very high acid content are almost guaranteed to cause an attack of acid reflux; so if they're part of your diet you may want to cut them out totally. For some people heartburn is a just a passing nuisance pain. For other folks out there it's a constant battle against a painful problem they'd much rather get rid of.

When you get an attack of heartburn the way it appears varies from person to person. Some people feel a burning sensation in their throat, some people can't stop burping and some others even begin to choke. Overall the most common sign of acid reflux is that nasty taste of vomit in the back of your mouth.

So what causes this problem?

Basically there's a valve in your stomach designed to keep the acid down there. Sometimes this valve gets jammed open and the acid in your stomach escapes and flows up towards your throat. This happens a lot when people are laying down - maybe having a nap after a meal. Heartburn itself can be made far worse by your diet - eating spicy foods definitely won't help.

Is it treatable?

Sure. There are dozens of treatments out there for heartburn/acid reflux and you'll be spoiled for choice when choosing one. Actually there's that many options out there just making the choice can be a headache. You have so many different over-the-counter treatments to choose from first. Dozens of them. Then you move into the territory of prescription treatments and all the "potential" side-effects that are tied to those. Some people even go as far as having surgery as a longterm solution for their reflux....which is a bit drastic no?

If you're like me you probably prefer to go the "natural route" for treating a problem like this. Especially considering the fact that most acid reflux "cures" can only be used for 2 weeks and then you have to stop. Not really a cure is it?

Using Gin Soaked Raisin to Help Treat Arthritis

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By: Edward Chen

There are many home remedies for arthritis. But the one most talked about these days are gin soaked raisins. Many people testify to the healing prowess of this particular remedy. And it is quite easy to prepare too. All you need are a good amount of gin and some golden raisins. Just put the raisins in a big bowl and pour enough gin to cover all of them. Let the raisins absorb the gin and allow the excess gin to evaporate. The whole process may take one week or longer. After which, the raisins will have to be kept in a jar covered tight with its original lid. To help treat arthritis, patients have to eat nine pieces of the prepared raisins daily. The raisins can be added to one's morning cereals or taken as snacks throughout the day.

This remedy sounds strange indeed. And the bigger question is always, will it work? The only way to find out is to try it. As of writing, there is still no medical evidence that gin soaked remedy works for arthritis patients. However, for those who are willing to try and do anything to provide relief for their condition, this simple recipe can be used. Anyway, raisins can be good for the body too. Raisins contain a good amount of antioxidants, which can help restore the functionality of body cells.

The popularity of the gin-soaked raisin remedy started when veteran radio anchor Paul Harvey talked about it in his show. Right after, the word about this holistic remedy spread like wildfire. And a lot of arthritis patient had actually tried it. If all the testimonies of the people who tried the remedy can be qualified as true, then gin soaked raisins must be one of the most effective home remedy there is for arthritis. In fact, this remedy is now being featured in almost all natural, holistic, and herbal books, magazines, and articles that discuss cures and treatments for certain diseases.

Today, there are a lot of variations to the simple recipe of gin-soaked raisin remedy. And almost all of them are coupled with convincing testimonials given by people who had actually tried it. But before anybody think of this as a miracle cure, it is best that the ingredient's nutritional values are considered first. While the testimonials of people are impressive, they are not good enough basis to believe.

Further analysis revealed that raisins do have natural components that can be helpful for arthritis patients. Both white and golden raisins contain sulfides or sulfur that can help relieve arthritic pain. The sulfur is acquired when the grape slowly dries out, as the whole drying out process uses sulfur dioxide as catalyst.

Raisins have high natural chemical content as well. And these natural chemicals have both anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory effects. Raisins also have pain relieving properties that can treat common illnesses associated to soreness and swelling.

On the other hand, gin is made out of juniper berries. Juniper gives gin its distinct flavor. This herb comes from the conifer plants and evergreens of Europe and North America. These berries are rich in Vitamin C and terpenes. Even the people of the Middle Ages use these berries to treat swelling and pain because it is an effective anti-inflammatory agent. Given these facts, there is high potential that gin-soaked raisins may actually help people with arthritis.

Hyper-Caffeinated Symptoms

ป้ายกำกับ:

By Gerrard Mackenzie

Caffeine has been taking the world by storm. It has been taking over the lives of many people in almost any setting as it is being taken in everyday by many people unintentionally and intentionally because of the known perks that it offer.

Pharmacology described caffeine as "the most widely used psychoactive drug in the world." Coffee break has been a culture in almost all offices. Even students partner with caffeine during their zombie nights of studying. Fast food beverages mostly contain caffeine. Chocolates and chocolate containing products, one of the most classic sweet cravings also has it.

It is actually a naturally occurring substance found in the leaves, seeds or fruits of more than 60 plants, coffee and cocoa beans, kola nuts and tea leaves, to name a few. It usually comes in beverages taken in to perk up ones day as it is technically classified as a central nervous system stimulant. Effects can be felt as quickly as 15 minutes after ingestion. It remains in ones body for several hours. After 6 hours, half of the ingested amount is eliminated.

Effects vary depending on the amount consumed throughout the day. Desirable effects can be enjoyed if caffeine is consumed in moderation. Positive mood effects include increased well-being, happiness, energetic arousal, alertness, and sociability, but if taken in large doses (200 mg or greater), initial effects would be anxiety, nervousness, and jitteriness.

Because of its wide range of effects, people should know how to draw the line between what is ok and what is too much as there is such a thing as psychiatric conditions associated with caffeine: caffeine intoxication, caffeine withdrawal, caffeine dependence, caffeine-induced sleep disorder, and caffeine-induced anxiety disorder.

Caffeine intoxication is the group of symptoms that arise in response to increased consumption of caffeine. Aside from anxiety and nervousness, a person can also feel extreme excitement, insomnia, rambling flow of thought and speech, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, tachycardia, diuresis, muscle twitching, periods of inexhaustibility, and psychomotor agitation. In addition, there have been reports of patients with caffeine intoxication having fever, irritability, tremors, sensory disturbances, tachypnea, and headaches. Experts say that these common manifestations are being experienced when more than 500mg is consumed.

These symptoms however, would vary from person to person. It is also affected by individual sensitivity and tolerance. For instance, a person with low sensitivity and high tolerance may need higher doses before intoxication symptoms can be experienced.

There are also some conditions which may be caffeine induced: the caffeine induced sleep disorder and anxiety disorder. Studies have shown that increased anxiety ratings and panic attack episodes usually happen at 200 mg consumption or more in the general population. Individuals who already have panic and anxiety disorders are even more sensitive to the effects of caffeine.

It has also been long established that caffeine has a significant effect on sleep. It can delay the onset of sleep, reduce total sleep time, alter normal stages of sleep, and decrease overall quality of sleep. Studies show that these effects are not only exerted by caffeine taken in before bedtime. Caffeine taken in anytime throughout the day or even during the morning can still counter attack your sleep.

On the other hand, there is what we call caffeine tolerance. Tolerance in general, when we talk about substance use, refers the decrease in responsiveness of a person to a drug after repeated drug exposure. Daily high doses of caffeine (750 to 1200 mg/day spread throughout the day) can produce complete tolerance. At relatively lower dietary doses, incomplete tolerance may be produced, where there is only disruption in sleep.

So when drinking anything with caffeine, just remember to not abuse it because it has the potential to abuse your body as well.

Every year hundreds of people rush to doctors seeking relief for bloating. Bloating, irrespective of the age and gender is prevalent amongst the people of all nations. Bloating of stomach or abdomen is usually caused by the accumulation of the gases or liquids in the intestine. It is these gases and liquids that make your abdomen look swollen increasing its diameter.

The process of digestion includes synthesizing the food taken and utilizing the necessary nutrients from it for producing energy. In a person if the bloating is caused because of an unhealthy colon, then, a simple colon cleansing regime might do the job for you.

Initially, the affected individual's medical history is studied by the physician. Then, basing on the outcome, further tests will be made on the individual to find out the real reason for the problems of bloating and gas. Diagnosis for gas and bloating includes: taking an x-ray of the intestine, observing the stools of the affected, conducting a lactose tolerance test, followed by a colonoscopy and a special antibody test will be made to check if the patient is prone to celiac disease or not.

To obtain temporary relief from the bloating and gas you can take pills like Gas X , Phazyme or any other antacid. Exercise caution while taking antacids for individuals are forbidden from taking high doses of them or from using antacids regularly for a longer period. If the gas that is emitted is smelling rancid and is unbearable then try taking some bismuth subsalicylate. This will immediately remove the foul smell from the gas. If you suspect of an unwanted bacterial growth in your intestine then take some antibiotics.

Is Glutathione Safe and is it Safe For the Liver

ป้ายกำกับ:

By Lindley Miras and Cecille Miras

Glutathione - small protein composed of 3 amino acids called cysteine, glutamic acid and glyceine, produced normally by the body in response to today's environment such as pollution in the air we breath, water we drink, chemicals & pesticides in the food we eat that cause damages in our cells & system.

Glutathione is the master anti-oxidant and central detoxifier of the body that protects body by targeting & destroying reactive oxygen molecules & free radicals. It has been widely heralded for its importance for good health and long life.

An antioxidant found in every cell in our bodies, glutathione is vital to the detoxification process. It binds to toxins and transforms them into a substance that the kidneys and liver can excrete from the body.

Glutathione helps our immune system and organs function normally. Low glutathione levels are linked to neuro-degenerative diseases, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease, and can be a factor in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Gastrointestinal Inflammation, Atherosclerosis, Cataracts, Improper Hormone Regulation, and even Cancer.

Cells vital to the immune system cannot multiply without sufficient glutathione and therefore cannot produce as many antibodies to kill unwanted cells. Ultraviolet and other radiation, viral infections, environmental toxins, household chemicals, drugs, surgery, burns, inflammation and dietary deficiencies can all deplete glutathione.

Glutathione has no adverse side effects and offers only life-enhancing qualities, so it is important to support its production within our bodies.

A person who is exposed to more toxins is said to use up his supply of glutathione. Without the protection of glutathione, cells will die at a faster rate, leading to quicker aging and a higher risk of developing diseases induced by toxins such as carcinoma. The whitening of the skin is said to be just a side effect of this anti-oxidant medication when the dosage is doubled.

L Glutathione has no known side effects or interactions even if given orally in prolonged use. However there are at least two known drug interactions. Remember that you must never take L Glutathione if you are being given an anti-psychotic medication such as Haloperidol or an chemotherapeutic drug like Cisplatin.

Regarding the safety of glutathione in the liver, it is said that ...

"The level of glutathione in the liver is critically linked to the liver's capacity to detoxify."

This means that the higher the glutathione content, the greater the liver's capacity to detoxify harmful chemicals. Typically, when we are exposed to chemicals like alcohol which can damage the liver, the concentration of glutathione in the liver is substantially reduced. This reduction makes the liver susceptible to damage.

Beware! Not all glutathione out in the market are safe

What type of L Glutathione preparations must be AVOIDED?

L glutathione preparations that are in combinations with the following:

Tyrostat (L tyrosine):

1. Their oral format is still highly questioned by clinicians.

2. This is used only for topical consumption and not to be taken orally.

3. There were reports that even their hair turned white and painful feeling and firming of the breasts.

Goat/Sheep Placenta Extract:

1. Not recommended to be taken orally.

2. The usual complaints of users are they get pimples and they get fat.

Vitamin A and E:

1. The vitamins can lead to hyper vitaminosis which is toxic to our body with prolonged use.

2. Fat-soluble vitamins (such as Vitamin A, D,E and K) are metabolized and hydrolyzed in the liver. With prolonged use, fat soluble vitamins can be detrimental to one's health since an excess of these preparations will not just simply be excreted; they will just be stored in the liver. This is the reason why doctors advise their patients to rest their liver after at least a month of taking fat-soluble vitamins.

3. Water-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin C and B-complex, when not used by the body, will just be excreted via urine, bile or faces

Interpret Your Own Dreams: 5 Types of Dreams and What They Can Reveal To You

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by: Sandra Gahlinge

Interpreting your own dreams is easier than some gurus would have you think. Different dreams have different purposes. Each type comes with its own message and meaning. Here are 5 Types of Dreams and the purposes of each. See which ones you've experienced and how to get the "juice" out of each type.

1. Prophetic Dreams

These dreams are the ones that get both sensationalized and also easily dismissed. These dreams are accompanied by flashes of insight. It can be a warning about your health, perhaps news of a birth or death- perhaps you see your future spouse. People throughout history have reported these types of occurrences. No matter what the message, these dreams are typically accompanied by an initial sense of calm and knowing. (Panic can occur later but is typically not the first response.)

This information is meant to help you navigate future events in your life and can serve as a warning for your survival. In the west, we have tended to dismiss these occurrences or explain them away with scienceand if science can't explain the phenomena, then we go back to dismissing them. This use of dreams has been around for millennia and the trend to dismiss this information is historically recent.

2. Daily Event Dreams

These are the most common and are the subconscious working out the events of the day. Freud speaks of dreams in this manner. In these types of dreams, you get to "finish things" on an emotional and even experiential level.

After all, the subconscious mind experiences dreams similarly to reality. In other words, through a dream, you can relive the events of the day whether it was a "gold medal" day, and you want that great feeling again, or whether it was an argument and you thought of a great comeback after the fact. These types of practical dreams allow you to rework and relive these events such that you can get the emotional benefit of closure they are a kind of mental "rewind" or second chance. Allowed to work properly, it can keep you off the mental "what if" hamster wheel. Instead of going over and over a situation during the waking hours, your mind can resolve it during dream time.

3. Soul Dreams

In the midst of our day-to-day activities and pressures, we sometimes push our desires to the side. We know what we want, and we ignore it. If you are the kind of person who gives your desires a backseat to the desires of others, these dreams encourage you to "step forward" in your daily life. They help you get clear about what you truly desire and, when used properly, can assist with the "how to" of moving forward. (One woman started her retail business after seeing it in great detail in a dream.)

This type of dream is a spiritual "tap on the shoulder". It's a call to your true self, a beckoning for you to follow your true desires. It's a reminder that your desires are still there, and it's an encouragement not to give up on them. Its spiritual permission and a nudge to action.

4. Travel Dreams

These are dreams where you seem to leave the body. Eastern traditions speak of this more so than you hear of it in the West. This is sometimes referred to as "astral travel". Whether or not you believe that you actually leave your body, there's still benefit in paying attention to where you go and what you do.

One woman reports of dreaming of being with her husband on a battlefield. When she would get letters, those letters confirmed what she had seen in her dreams. Through her dreams, she had experienced, or watched, the battle as it happened. This experience provides a sense of the truth that "all is one" and is often meant to provide comfort. (In this case, the woman saw that her husband was okay.) This type of dream also demonstrates that we have power beyond what we imagine possible.

5. Attack Dreams

These dreams differ from the kind where you are fighting someone, and you can't move. (This is the kind where you want to punch your opponent, and you can't due to REM sleep. These are the Daily Event type of dreams.)

"Attack dreams" typically occur between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. They are accompanied by a sense of something evil in the room. There is still an inability to move, but this paralysis is accompanied by an awareness of the room and knowledge of the difference between being awake and asleep. Many people report a compulsion to pray while in the midst of these attacks. In Africa , this experience is called "Ogun Oru". The Japanese also report this dream phenomenon as do many cultures - albeit by different names. Science calls it "sleep paralysis". There can be medical, mental and spiritual reason behind this type of dream. If you've had this experience, know that you are not alone. You may want to seek the help of a doctor or a spiritual advisor or both.

Now that you know these 5 types of dreams, you can begin investigation of your dreams from a place of knowledge and power, from a place of inner wisdom.

All you need to know about Ephedrine: A Guide to Steroids

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

By: Tarun Gupta

Ephedrine is a sympathomimatic amine derived from a shrub like plant called Ephedra, especially Ephedra sinica, which is found in desert regions in central Asia and other parts of the world and is famous for its dried greens which have medicinal properties. Ephedra’s main active medical ingredients are the alkaloids ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine and the Ephedrine is most usually marketed in the hydrochloride and sulfate forms.

Therapeutic properties of Ephedrine:

Ephedrine is a white odorless powdered or crystalline alkaloid commonly used as stimulant, appetite suppressant, concentration aid, decongestant, and to treat hypotension associated with anesthesia. It is an FDA-regulated drug commonly prescribed as a bronchodilator to treat bronchitis and asthma.

Ephedrine is also frequently used intravenously in the reversal of hypotension from spinal/epidural anesthesia. It is also used in other hypotensive states, including overdose with ganglionic blocking agents, anti-adrenergic agents, or other medications that lower blood pressure.

Mechanism of Action: Principally, Ephedrine acts direct or indirectly on the adrenergic receptor system which is a part of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). CNS is also involved to some extent; however, the predominant clinical effects are caused by involvement with the sympathetic segment of the peripheral nervous system.

Side Effects of Ephedrine: Various adverse reactions or side effects of Ephedrine have been found to be more common with systemic administration of the drug, for instance, intravenous injection or oral administration as compared to topical administration like nasal instillations. Some of the side effects associated with steroid abuse include, but are not limited to:

• Cardiovascular: Ephedrine may lead to tachycardia (i.e. abnormally rapid heartbeat), cardiac arrhythmias, angina pectoris i.e. a heart condition marked by paroxysms of chest pain due to reduced oxygen to the heart, and vasoconstriction with hypertension.

• Genitourinary: There may be an increased urine output due to increased blood flow while there may also be some difficulty in urinating as alpha-agonists such as ephedrine constrict the internal urethral sphincter.

• Neuro-muscular Complications: Ephedrine may lead to restlessness, confusion, insomnia, and mild euphoria. In extreme cases, there may be hostility, panic, and/or agitation. Formication, i.e. a form of hallucinated sensation that insects or snakes are crawling over the skin, may also be possible but lacks attested evidence.

A word of Caution: If you have any of the following medical conditions, Ephedrine is not recommended for use: Glaucoma, certain psychiatric conditions, cardio-vascular complications, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, fluctuating blood pressure, and/or any allergies. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk or not and due to the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended.

5 Causes of Sinus Infections and Sinus Problems - Nurse's Guide

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Helen Hecker

If you're having sinus headaches, sinus pressure or pain or other sinus problems regularly or you have chronic sinus infections you may want to know what may be causing them. Sometimes just knowing the cause of a sinus condition will help you stop exposure or avoid them in the future. I'll mention just five of the causes here that you may or may not know about.

1. Sinus infections. In recent studies it was found that most sinus infections are caused by a fungus. For many years it was thought they were bacterial in nature or viral but studies have shown only a small percentage of them are.

2. Exposure to dust mite droppings. Dust mites are tiny creatures that are too small for you to see. They love to hang out in bedding and load up mattresses so they actually can weigh more after a few years of use it's claimed. Dust mite droppings are the culprit and it takes a thorough HEPA vacuuming of your carpets and hot water washing for all bedding to eliminate most of them.

To get rid of them all and prevent future problems, you'll need allergen prevention, zipped covers for your pillows and mattresses to keep the dust mites out. Some people even remove the carpeting in their bedroom. You'd need to get a dust mite allergy test to determine if they're the cause.

3. Cigarette smoke. Smoke you inhale either as a smoker yourself, or from second hand smoke can wreak havoc with your sinuses and cause the lining of the cavities to swell, causing sinusitis. Avoid inhaling smoke at all cost. Secondly any other kind of smoke from fire extinguishers, forest fires, neighborhood burnings, etc. can be a major source of sinus problems.

4. Dust. Digging around in old boxes of files or household items or stirring up old dust in any household area can raise dust and cause it to be airborne. Wear masks to help limit your exposure to this dust. It can get up into your sinuses and make them swell narrowing the passages or causing a blockage and start up a sinus infection.

5. Polluted air or smoggy conditions outdoors. Be aware of air quality reports on the local news if you're plagued with sinus problems. It only takes a short walk around the neighborhood or the windows open at home for you to be exposed to polluted air. Keep your windows and car windows closed.

These are just a few of the causes of sinus infections and other sinus conditions. There are natural ways to treat your sinus problems and you can learn how to treat a sinus infection naturally at home. You don't have to suffer ever again. Once you learn how to stop them with natural treatment you'll know once and for all how to prevent your sinus symptoms from turning into full-blown sinus infections.

No-Lump Breast Cancer: Silent Killer on the Loose

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

Christiene Bowden
http://www.iwearitwell.com

No-lump breast cancer is invasive and highly aggressive form of cancer. Good news, though it is rare.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer does not produce a lump so it can go unnoticed; in fact, it can pass simply as inflammation of the breast, which the doctor may initially prescribe antibiotics for. However, unlike ordinary breast infection that also causes swelling of the breast, Inflammatory Breast Cancer will not respond favorably to antibiotics. It is a form of breast cancer that spreads rapidly; unless detected earlier, survival is very slim.

Suzanne G. Beaver of Camarillo, 47, dismissed her engorged breasts as pre-menstrual syndrome and just got busier at work hoping that her condition would improve. Three weeks later, she was told she had inflammatory breast cancer.

Dr. Tim Moynihan, a cancer specialist at the Mayo Clinic, cited in one of his published articles the typical danger signs of inflammatory breast cancer:

1. The breast can become engorged and tender.

2. Inflammatory Breast Cancer causes the breast to appear red, enlarged and feel warm

to the touch.

3. There is an absence of a lump, but the entire breast would swell.

Mastitis is a breast disease that causes inflammation of the breast and is often accompanied by fever. At the onset, inflammatory breast cancer has the symptoms similar to mastitis that it can be easily considered as such, but unlike mastitis that responds quickly to medication, inflammatory breast cancer is very rarely accompanied by fever and antibiotic treatment may not help.

How bad can it get?

The course of treatment between the common type of breast cancer and the inflammatory type differs. For one, chemotherapy may be started right away among patients suffering from inflammatory breast cancer, prior to removing the diseased breast. This is to allow the skin of the breast to heal first before the operation. With inflammatory type of breast cancer, the skin surrounding the breast can become red and swollen; this makes it difficult for doctors to operate on the breast.

Mastectomy does not guarantee cancer will not recur among women suffering from the inflammatory type. This is primarily the reason why there is a need to put the patient on radiation therapy even if mastectomy has already been performed on the breast. Incidence of recurrence can be high due to the condition of the skin on the breast region.

At the first sign of a rash or inflammation on the local region of the breast, you should take a closer look. The problem may not be as simple as you think!

Sometimes, it is better to worry a bit (without becoming paranoid), than be sorry about it.

Poison Ivy Allergy

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By: David Cowley

If you are allergic to poison ivy then you suffer from allergies Type 4 or delayed allergies. Up to 90 percent of people are allergic to the urushiol oil that causes the poison ivy rash. Over half of the population will experience a rash with the first contact of the poison ivy plant and is considered the most common allergy in the country.

Symptoms of poison ivy allergy is a severe itching of the skin that later develop into an inflammation of the skin. Red oozing sores or blisters can develop in sever cases and the fluid will have a slight yellowish color.

Some of us can roll in poison ivy and come out without any problems, while others can merely brush up against a few leaves of the stuff and they are scratching for weeks. In most cases, allergies are more annoying that debilitating but to the extreme allergy suffers life can be pure misery or even death.

Just because you do not develop systems the first few times you come into contact with poison ivy does not mean that you are immune. It may take several exposures to poison ivy before symptoms develop. The more times you are exposed to the usushiol the more likely it is that you will break out in a rash. Symptoms usually occur within 2 to 3 days.

It only take 1 billionth of a gram to cause the rash. 1/4 of an ounce of urushiol is all that is needed to cause a rash in every person on earth.

The usushiol oil can still be found on dead poison ivy plants for up to five years. Direct contact is the most common way of catching poison ivy however, you can catch poison ivy by just being close to the plants if the urushiol oil becomes airborne due to the plants are being burned, like in a forest fire, or because of the actions of a lawnmower or weed trimmer.

Scratching or rubbing the rashes will not spread the poison ivy rash unless you still have the urushiol oil on your hands. This also means that poison ivy is not contagious and you will not be able to give it to another person. Scratching can lead to scaring and infection of the affected area so it is not recommended.

Over the years I have developed poison ivy rash numerous times and I have tried many different treatments and I have found only two treatments that work for me. The first is with my Doctor giving me a steroid shot of Prednisone. Symptoms usually start to improve within 24 hours.

The second treatment is one that I have never found documented anyplace else. Back in the early 60s an old country doctor told me of this treatment. Go to your pharmacy and get a solution of 5 percent carbolic acid in olive oil. Rub the solution on the rash. Within minutes you will see a yellowish fluid appearing on top of the red sores or blisters. Mop up the fluid and when no more fluid develops after several minutes reapply the carbolic acid in olive oil solution. This treatment will start to relieve the symptoms with an hour or two but will take 1 to 2 weeks to cure the poison ivy rash. The carbolic acid in olive oil solution seems to act as some type of drawing agent and I have successfully used it on bee stings and insect bites.

Avoidance is the best advice for Posion Ivy Allergy. Leave of three then let them be.

Always consult your doctor before using this information.

Banana diet is for gorillas, not people!

ป้ายกำกับ:

by Kelly S

The Morning Banana Diet regime is simple: A banana (or as many as you want) and room temperature water for breakfast; eat anything you like for lunch and dinner (by 8 p.m.). A three o'clock snack is okay, but no desserts after meals, and you have to go to bed before midnight.

Sumiko Watanabe, a pharmacist in Osaka designed this stress-free diet to help increase the metabolism of her husband Hitoshi Watanabe, who had been rather overweight. In due course, Mr. Watanabe lost 37 pounds and introduced the diet on mixi, one of Japan's largest social networking services. Morning Banana Diet books published since March have sold over 730,000 copies, and some have been translated and published in South Korea and Taiwan. The diet became even more popular after a TV program featured a singer who had lost 15 pounds in just six weeks. It was literally the day after that program aired that the shortage of bananas first became evident. "Bananas suddenly flew off the shelves, there was a 70%-80% increase in weekly sales compared to the same period last year," says Takeshi Ozaki, a spokesperson of Life Corporation that runs 201 supermarkets throughout Japan.

Professor Masahiko Okada of Niigata University School of Medicine questions the hype around the banana diet. The human body has three essential nutrients - carbohydrates, fat and protein - , he says, and "the golden rule is to balance these three nutrients and a daily calorie intake. Once you understand that, you don't have to be swayed by the fad diet any more, whether it is a konnyaku (alimentary yam paste) or a banana diet." But a nation prone to dieting fads often ignores such sober advice. To learn real secrets to weight loss, please visit Click Here!

Feverfew, Butterbur and Pine Bark - Three Powerful and Effective Herbal Remedies For Migraines

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Thomas Thorne

When a person develops a migraine headache, the primary and immediate concern is relief from the incredible pain. All too often individuals in this situation grab a bottle and down one, two or three of the common over-the-counter headache medications to fix the issue. The problem is, that does not fix the issue. People who take 2-3 or more of these medications per week are at strong risk to become caught in a desperate rebound headache cycle, where they have near daily headaches of one degree or another.

There has got to be a better way to fight this modern day scourge on mankind. A person in such a situation has lost control of his or her life. They are slave to an evil taskmaster that will not allow them to do many of the things that they would like and not to enjoy so much of what life has to offer.

Through testing, three of the most effective herbal remedies for migraines are feverfew, butterbur and pine bark. Let's take a look at all three of these promising alternative treatments for migraine.

Feverfew

Feverfew comes from the same tribe of plants (asteraceae) as the daisy. Since the 1st century A.D., it has been used for the treatment of headache, stomachaches and fever. Feverfew has anti-inflammatory, stimulant, relaxant, decongestant and anti-coagulant properties.

Feverfew is mainly used for the treatment and prevention of frequent and serious migraine headaches. From the Natural Health (2007-03-01) we are told that "in a recent, well-designed clinical trial, 170 German patients took a placebo pill or an extract of feverfew for 16 weeks. Those taking Feverfew had significantly fewer migraines."

Feverfew should be taken daily as a preventative, rather than a treatment for migraines. Herbal experts recommend tapering off the dose if you are going to quit taking the herb.

Butterbur

Traditionally butterbur has been used to treat spasms in the respiratory and digestive tract. In addition, Butterbur is said to inhibit the production of histamine, which helps to keep air passages open. This may help to relieve allergic congestion and seasonal allergies.

Butterbur is very popular in Europe and becoming increasingly popular in America as a sound way to minimize neurological discomfort. The exact cause of this is still unclear but neurologically severe headaches may be caused by a number of biological factors. Some researchers believe that they stem from an imbalance in the central nervous system that encourages the release of blood-dilating peptides. This could result in inflammation of the brain's thin outer layer, the cerebral cortex. As pressure builds, blood flow becomes more restricted, potentially enhancing migraine headache symptoms. (Carle, R., Plant-based antiphlogistics and spasmolytics' (translated from German). Z Phytother. 1988; 9: 67-76).

Other physicians think that many commonly consumed food items trigger migraines or that they could be hereditary. A 12 week clinical study showed that the active compounds in butterbur can prevent peptidoleukotriene biosynthesis, which is an inflammatory process that has been linked to the onset of mgraines. (Bickel D, Roder T, Bestmann, J. Identification and characterization of inhibitors of peptide-leukotriene-synthesis from Petasites hybridus. Plant Medica. 1994; 60:31-322).

Also of note is the writing 'Petasites Hybridus Root (Butterbur) is an effective prevention for migraine" by Lipton, Einhaupl and Gobel (Neurology, 2004; 2240-4).

One thing to note about butterbur is that the plant contains liver toxins called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). So it is important to choose a formula that is PA free.

Pine Bark

Dr. Sirichai Chayasirisobhon of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center set out to address the question of whether free radical damage can contribute to migraine headaches. ("Use of a Pine Bark Extract and Antioxidant Vitamin Combination Product as Therapy for Medication", Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain, Vol 46, No. 5, May 2006) He chose a dozen patients who had a long-term history of migraines with little to no success with various drugs (antidepressants, beta-blockers and anticonvulsants).

At the start of the study, subjects completed a questionnaire which was called the migraine disability assessment (MIDAS). The MIDAS was designed to assess the impact of migraine flare-ups on activities at home, work and while interacting with friends and family. This is a great way to start an unbiased test, so that the results before the test are well documented and there can be no dispute.

For the three month study period, each subject was given daily supplements that contained 600 mg of vitamin C, 300 IU of vitamin E and 1,200 mg of a pine bark extract. Subjects were allowed to continue using the medications they were currently taking.

Upon the end of the trial period the subjects completed a seconds MIDAS questionnaire. Their responses indicated a significant improvement.

The overall MIDAS scored improvement was more than 50%.

The average number of migraine days was reduced from 44 days in the three months prior to the trial, to 26 days during the trial.

The average migraine severity score (which some will argue is the most important factor) was reduced from 7.5 (out of 10) to 5.5

One subject dropped out of the trial. Of the remaining 11, two reported no change in frequency, duration or severity. Among the other nine, the overall MIDAS score improvement was almost 68%.

These three herbal remedies for migraines have all shown very good results when tested as alternative treatments for migraine headaches. If you suffer from headaches of these three appear to be well worth a try. It is possible that people in this country need to take a new approach toward migraine headache relief. Herbal remedies may be the answer.

Visit the Herbal Remedies for Migraine Headaches website for more information on herbal remedies for migraine headaches and great product offers. There are ways to help defeat the battle with migraines or headaches in general that many of us are facing.

By: Jade Simpson

Herpes is a disease which is responsible lesions, rashes on the skin. There are several viruses, and each strain causes similar, but another type of home.

There are 2 main types that are most frequently encountered. The first strain of herpes is herpes simplex 1, which will affect parts of the body above the waist. Outbreaks occur mainly inside and outside the mouth.

Transmission herpes

The other dominant member of the herpes family is herpes simplex virus 2, which is also called HSV 2. This herpes a member of the family and affects the public areas and the buttocks and lower back. We'll talk about the type of virus causing outbreaks in more detail a little further.

Herpes simplex 1 is the mild form of herpes viruses. The homes are cold sores, blisters and fever, which is located inside or outside the mouth. The disease is (transmitted and incurable. The way to transmit this disease is through contact with lesions. This virus can also result in genital herpes, but it is generally around the mouth.

This is known as oral herpes. These lesions erupt when the immune system is weakened or stressed. Thus, the name of fever blisters or cold sores, see these injuries occur when there is a cold.

Herpes simplex 2 is the most commonly talked about herpes. HSV 2 is passed through sexual activity. The Candelis RIS PACS is a breakthrough for small medical facilities operating on low budgets

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Wayne Hemrick

A RIS PACS - integrated Radiology Information and Picture Archive and Communications System - is perhaps the most vital piece of equipment a health care facility can have, particularly when it comes to employing a mammography workstation. Until now, there have been two barriers to small private practices and underfunded public health facilities when it came to access to an up-to-date, yet affordable PACS. One of course is cost - RIS PACS such as are used at top university medical centers and private commercial hospitals run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars

The other problem has had more to do with the technology itself. Not only has the technology of standard PACS workstations been very complex, it has had its limitations as well. Even the most novice PC user will tell you that image files of any kind are either large and unwieldy, or of extremely poor quality. This is especially true of medical imagery, which is must not only be very clear detailed, but is also produced by means of several different and incompatible modalities that include MRI, computed tomography and electroencephalogram. Such image files are huge, and have not always been viewable on a PC monitor without the use of special software.

You may also have noticed dramatic drops in the price of computer technology in recent years. This drop has also affected the technology behind RIS PACS. Today, Candelis Imagegrid, a manufacturer of high tech mammography viewers and other medical imaging equipment, is able to offer the Candelis PACS - a full-featured, user friendly RIS PACS affordably priced for small private medical practices and public health facilities serving inner cities and rural communities.

The Candelis RIS PACS is an integrated mammography workstation and fully functional database and archival storage system. If you are familiar with the use of a Windows-based PC, you will find the Candelis PACS extremely user-friendly. This affordable pacs not only allows radiologists and other health care professionals to readily download, view and archive a wide range of medical images (including EEGs, MRIs and CTs), it readily interfaces with a medical office's existing network as well as the World Wide Web. This means that patient records (which the front office can organize and store using the ris pacs) are close as a keystroke and can be archived with their associated image files. Internet capability means that doctors can easily collaborate and consult with colleagues anywhere in the world in real time.

The Candelis RIS PACS is a breakthrough for small medical facilities operating on low budgets. Check out Candelis Imagegrid today and find out how the RIS PACS have improve the quality of your patients' care at a cost lower than you thought.

Ovarian Cyst Pain

ป้ายกำกับ:

by ovarian.cyspfu

Ovarian cyst pain can be excruciating, depending on the size and type of the cysts, as well as their exact location. Many times you may have a cyst and never feel anything, but when cysts become large, are a symptom of polycystic ovarian disease, or are cancerous, as well as at other times, you may experience mild to severe pain in the abdomen, back, and pelvic region.

Treating ovarian cyst pain can be done in a number of ways, and there are things that you can do at home as well as treatments and medications that can be ordered by your doctor. The first step is to use acetaminophen and ibuprofen to try and relieve the pain. Soaking in a hot bath and using a heating pad in the abdominal area or back may help to give you some pain relief as well.

If you have ovarian cyst pain that is severe, or occurs suddenly and is sharp, you may need further treatment to control the pain and keep you comfortable. Sometimes when a cyst ruptures, you may experience a sharp or stabbing pain that will slowly go away, and the rupturing of a cyst will normally stop any severe pain. Narcotic pain medications may be prescribed by your doctor to help treat the ovarian cyst pain, and these are normally low level narcotics like Tylenol with Codeine or Vicodin. Sometimes, if your pain is very severe, hospitalization for pain management through an IV or medication pump may be necessary, especially if you are younger and surgery will pose a risk to your future fertility. In teens and women in their early twenties, and women who have never had children, doctors may be reluctant to do surgery for fear of causing scar tissue on and around their ovaries which may prevent the function of the ovary.

Classic Symptoms and Risk Factors Coupled with Kidney Cancer

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Trevor Price

Because five-year survival rates increase significantly in patients who are diagnosed early, detection of kidney cancer symptoms is critical. To learn more about symptoms associated with the disease and contributing risk factors, keep reading.

Symptoms of Kidney Cancer

Bloody Urine: Bloody urine is a common sign of kidney cancer. However, like many kidney cancer symptoms, it can also be associated with bladder cancer and other bladder-related ailments.

Back Pain: Many people diagnosed with kidney cancer experience low back pain that isn't associated with an injury or other physical ailment.

Lump: A lump or mass in the abdomen is often felt or found by patients with kidney cancer.

General Fatigue: Though fatigue is not a specific symptom, meaning it's often found in other diseases and cancer, it's a common symptom of kidney cancer that can help doctors make a diagnosis.

Loss of Appetite: Unintentional weight loss that happens quickly can be a symptom of kidney cancer. Many patients lose their appetites, have trouble eating and digesting, and tend to lose weight quickly.

Frequent Fevers: Fevers that are consistent, frequent and not connected to other infections (like a flu) can be a symptom of kidney cancer.

Swelling: Edema, also known as swelling in the lower legs is a typical kidney cancer symptom most apparent in women.

Higher Blood Pressure: Like many of the other symptoms listed above, high blood pressure can be attributed to numerous other diseases. However, if discovered alongside other symptoms, it can often be a good indicator for the disease.

Risk Factors for Kidney Cancer

Smoking: Smoking is the cause of 30% of renal cell carcinoma (common kidney cancer) cases in male smokers and 25% of cases in women.

Analgesic Medication: Addictions to painkillers that contain phenactin, which is no longer approved in the United States, can dramatically increase a person's risk for kidney cancer.

Exposure at the Work Place: Workers who are exposed to products like organic solvents, petroleum by-products, camium and asbestos all have an increased risk for developing kidney cancer.

Genetic Disorders: Genetic disorders of the kidney, such as tuberous sclerosis, von Hippel-Lindau disease or a heavy family history of the disease can all increase a person's risk for developing kidney cancer.

Obesity: People who are obese or very overweight are more at risk for developing renal cell kidney cancer than those who maintain a healthy body weight.

Long-Term Kidney Failure: Persistent and consistent kidney failure can cause cysts to form in the kidney, therefore increasing the cancer risk.

Advancing Age: Typically, renal cell carcinoma only develops in adults over the age of fifty and under seventy.

Male or Female: Men are twice more likely to develop kidney cancer, like renal cell carcinoma, than women.

If you have or have been exposed to any of the above risk factors for kidney cancer, it's critical that you be aware of kidney cancer symptoms. Should you experience any of the listed symptoms, be sure to talk to your doctor without delay.

Human Growth Hormone - Do You Want to Know More About It?

Although many people may have thought that Human Growth Hormone or also referred to as HGH is actually somewhat of a new concept, this is far from true. HGH has actually been under studies since the 1950's, and it was then the first discovery of the Humane Growth Hormone being a treatment of effectiveness for Growth Hormone Deficiencies. But it was not until the early 90's that HGH had been discovered to be an efficient treatment against the aging process.

As soon as HGH was linked to being successful in fighting off the aging process naturally, treatments and products containing HGH quickly became a booming market. This should come to no surprise considering how badly most individuals today truly desire to do almost anything in keeping youthful. There are several areas that the clinical studies are showing HGH to be really effective, including muscle growth and weight loss.

HGH is made up of Amino Acids such as Nitrogen-Bearing Organic Acids that tend to create the basic proteins foundation. HGH is then released into the bloodstream for controlling the body's metabolism. The body's endocrine glands that releases the HGH is made up of the hypothalamus, the adrenal glands, the ovaries, the thyroid, the thymus, the pituitary gland, the pineal and the testes.

The HGH protein is a very complex protein, and is a blend that includes 191 different amino acids and these proteins that makes up HGH is secreted by the pituitary gland. HGH is primarily for the HGH production that activates the liver's ability to produce Growth Factor Insulin for keeping the tissue and bones contentiously growing.

The Human Growth Hormone product in pill form has been found to be the easiest way for individuals to get this highly desired natural growth stimulate. Otherwise HGH would have to be taken in shot or spray form instead, and most everyone would prefer the pill method of HGH intake to the HGH spray method too.

Just as anything else, there are several pros and cons between the injection HGH, the spray HGH and the pill forms of HGH. Both the injection form and the spray form tend to be slightly quicker getting into the blood stream so to work faster, but they are both much more expensive, and even painful when considering the injection form of HGH. But when the pill form of HGH is taken regularly there will be resounding results in the end, and a bundle of money to have been saved, and without any physical pain from needles.

The Listeria Challenge

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By Arlene Schag

Listeria are mainly soil bacteria, though as a pathogen they are food-borne. The illness caused by the bacteria in people is called listeriosis. Listeria monocytogenes is estimated to cause at least 43 percent of food-borne illness in the United States.

The ability of Listeria to inhabit a wide range of environments coincides with the presence of 331 genes encoding different transport proteins, comprising 11.6% of the total gene compliment of L. monocytogenes. Listeria also has an extensive regulatory repertoire occupying 7.3% of the total genome.

The bacteria propel themselves through the cytoplasm of an infected cell using a tail composed of actin. Both pathogenic and innocuous forms of listeria have the ability to form biofilms, which allow them to attach to solid surfaces where they proliferate and become extremely difficult to remove.

While most bacteria grow poorly when temperatures fall below 40°F, Listeria survives at temperatures from below freezing to body temperature, and grows best at the 0°F to 50°F range. Listeria challenges us because of its ability to grow in diverse environments.

Food processing plant surveys have found Listeria in the following locations (listed approximately in the order of prevalence):

• floors

• drains

• coolers

• cleaning aids such as brushes, sponges, etc.

• product and/or equipment wash areas

• food contact surfaces

• condensate

• walls and ceilings

• compressed air

Control of Listeria relies on detecting and managing harborage sites with thorough and frequent cleaning.

The body's defense against Listeria monocytogenes and other intracellular pathogens is called "cell-mediated immunity" because it depends on our cells (as opposed to our antibodies), especially lymphocytes called "T-cells." Therefore, it is not surprising that individuals whose cell-mediated immunity is suppressed are more susceptible to the devastating effects of Listeriosis. Persons with AIDS suffer listeriosis 65-145 times more frequently than the general population.

Pregnant women naturally have a depressed cell-mediated immune system; many think that this occurs so that the mother's immune system will not reject the fetus. Pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to contract listeriosis. About one-third of listeriosis cases happen during pregnancy. The incidence of listeriosis in the newborn is 8.6 per 100,000 live births (Tappero et al., 1995). Newborns, rather than the pregnant women themselves, suffer the serious effects of infection in pregnancy.

Symptoms

• Fever

• Muscle aches

• Nausea or diarrhea (sometimes)

If the infection spreads to the nervous system, listeriosis can cause:

• Headache

• Stiff neck

• Confusion

• Loss of balance

• Convulsions

Prevention

• Ready-to-eat foods: Hot dogs, cold cuts, lunchmeats, deli counter meats, and other ready-to-eat foods. Eat these foods only if they're reheated until steaming hot. Even cured meats such as salami must be heated.

• Meats and seafood: Cook these all the way through. Stay away from rare meat and seafood.

• Leftovers: Reheat all until steaming hot.

• Fruits and vegetables: Listeria can grow on some fruits and vegetables. Do not buy sliced melon. Wash all fruits and vegetables with water. Scrub hard produce such as cucumbers and melons with a clean produce brush.

• When you buy pre-cooked or ready-to-eat foods that go in the fridge, use them as soon as you can.

• Clean your fridge often.

• Make sure that the fridge always stays at 40 degrees F or colder. Use a refrigerator thermometer.

• Read labels. Follow instructions on foods that must be kept in the fridge or have a "use by" date.

• Wash your hands with warm soapy water after you touch raw foods. Wash any knives or other tools you used with hot, soapy water before you use them again.

Diagnosis

There is no routine screening test for susceptibility to listeriosis during pregnancy, as there is for rubella and some other congenital infections. The SafePathä Listeria ELISA is a rapid and reliable test, which significantly reduces the time required to screen foods for the presence of Listeria. The assay can detect LM, L. innocua and L. welshimeri. Primary enrichment cultures grown for 24 to 48 hours can be tested in less than one hour, allowing ELISA-negative product to be released sooner than with standard methods. Presumptively positive ELISA samples can be cultured further for confirmation by standard methods.

Treatment

Listeriosis is treated with the antibiotics ampicillin (Omnipen) or sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra). Because the bacteria live within macrophage cells, treatment may be difficult and the treatment periods may vary.

Sensitive Skin Goes Beyond the Face

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Farid Mostamand

Though many people do experience the symptoms of sensitive skin just on the face, it happens quite frequently on various parts of the body as well.

In a recent double study conducted both at a university hospital and at a center for cosmetological studies, multiple participants reported sensitive skin in places such as hands, feet, and even the scalp. This type of sensitive skin is triggered by many factors, including sun, heat, cold, shampoos, soaps, wind, and many others.

Healthy People Struggle with Sensitive Skin

Though diet and stress can play a role in triggering sensitive skin, the participants of this study were all considered otherwise healthy. It simply is not one type of person who experiences skin problems; healthy or not, sensitive skin can be a problem for many. The prevalence of sensitive skin is extremely high, though most people who experience symptoms do not seek treatment from a doctor or dermatologist.

If you choose not to be treated by a health care professional and yet you constantly experience the symptoms and problems that occur with sensitive skin, there are many products available over-the-counter which can help.

Certain skincare products can soothe sensitive skin, as well as keep it hydrated and supple to prevent irritation from dryness. One such product which is helpful to sensitive skin is called Celazome Spoil Me Body Moisturizer. This body lotion uses petroleum, which acts as a ‘sealing barrier,’ to soothe and treat sensitive skin all over the body, while preventing water loss that would typically result in dryness. This is a medical-grade moisturizer which is available over-the-counter.

Caring For Sensitive Skin

Besides using the correct skin care products for your sensitive skin, there are other gentle care tips you can use to minimize your symptoms.

Firstly, you should be using a laundry detergent which is free from dyes and perfumes so that your clothing can not irritate your skin.

When showering, avoid using rough washcloths which rub against your skin and cause irritation. Also, avoid using bar soap, but instead use a liquid body wash that is labeled for sensitive skin. Look for bath and skin products which are made with all natural ingredients, as these can be a lot less harsh.

For those with sensitive skin, it is extremely important to stay moisturized. Using products such as Celazome, which has time-released moisture nanospheres, will provide all day skin therapy for sensitive skin.

The results of the medical study are clear - sensitive skin can occur anywhere on the body. Though sensitive skin is poorly understood by the average person, taking care of the problem can be easy.

By avoiding harsh products and having a proper skin care routine that is followed on a daily basis, the symptoms suffered by those with sensitive skin can be lessened with minimal effort. Remember to look for products made especially for sensitive skin, such as Celazome lotions, which are readily available over-the-counter without a dermatologist’s prescription.

10 Ways to Improve Your Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)

ป้ายกำกับ:

ฺัBy:mythyroid

Thyroid eye disease is an inflammatory condition which affects the orbital contents including the extraocular muscles and orbital fat. It is almost always associated with Graves' disease (GD) but may rarely be seen in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, primary hypothyroidism, or thyroid cancer. The ocular manifestations of TED include soft tissue inflammation, eyelid retraction, proptosis, corneal exposure, and optic nerve compression. The signs and symptoms of the disease are characteristic. These include lid retraction, lid lag, and a delay in the downward excursion of the upper eyelid in down gaze that is specific to TED.

Thyroid eye disease affects approximately 1 million people in USA and Canada and 250,000 people in the UK. Although blindness is a dreaded complication, fortunately only a small minority of patients require surgery or other medical treatment to protect their vision. The majority of patients with thyroid eye disease however appear to suffer silently trying to come to terms with the facial disfigurement that is caused by the disease. It is particularly unkind, distorting the most expressive, vivid and ageless feature of the face, the eyes. Many patients with thyroid eye disease are unable to face the world, they don’t want to look at the mirror any more and avoid social contacts as much as they can. Relationships break down, jobs are lost, depression sets in and life changes for the worse. These people are really desperate, they lost a hope that will ever get better and the consequences in their everyday life are severe.

The choices now-a-days, available for treating Thyroid Eye Disease and it’s symptoms like bulging eyes, double vision, and protruded eyes can be summarized as follows:.

1. Cold compress on your eyes
2. Elevating head to relieve swelling
3. Flax seed oil
4. Lubrication eye drops (avoid the one that are treating red eyes)
5. Lubrication ointments
6. Exercises to strengthen the eye muscles
7. Humidifiers in your room
8. Wear good sunglasses that are really protecting your eyes
9. Corrective surgery to loosen the eyelids
10. Decompression surgery
11. Steroids and prisms (to correct double vision)

I believe that once your symptoms are under control and your test are in normal range your eyes will start to improve. So besides treating the symptoms I would recommend treating the cause of Graves’ Disease illness as well.

Svetla Bankova is a former Graves’ Disease patient and the author of "Life Manual for Graves' Disease and Hyperthyroidism", "Thyroid Eye Disease and Its Healing" and "Life Manual for 21st Century Women" books. She cured herself even though Graves' Disease is considered “incurable”, applying methods and techniques, that are not only natural- but include a deep understanding of the Human Nature and Psychology, as well as a profound psychological approach to our everyday life challenges. Although it took some time before she was able to look back on her painful and devastating experience with Graves Disease in order to write about her story, Svetla's book shares her deeply personal journey through Graves’ Disease in a way that connects you to her thoughts and experiences from the time she got Graves’ Disease and the life-saving choices she had to make in order to conquer it. ‘Life Manual for Graves’ Disease and Hyperthyroidism’ is an easy-to-follow guide with powerful techniques that will dramatically influence how you feel. It was written with a holistic approach, addressing not only the physical consequences of Graves’ Disease, but also the emotional, spiritual and social ones as well and how to overcome them.

When Does Sweating Become Excessive?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

CristianStan

Sweating is a normal phenomenon. It is the body's natural way of cooling itself up. However, excessive sweating isn't normal. Sweating too much is a medical problem called hyperhidrosis. And it is a condition that has to be treated medically. But the big question is when does sweating become excessive? Where do you draw the line?

It should be okay if your body tends to get soaked with sweat during the hot weather. Nevertheless, continuous dripping of sweat in the colder weather is not normal. Sudden rise in your body temperature without any apparent reason is already a case for the doctor to diagnose. There could be something wrong in your body's response system because it thinks it is feeling hot when in fact it isn't.

The factors affecting hyperhidrosis can either be obvious or unexplained. Excessive sweating is mostly experienced by the obese because they may have too many fat cells underneath their skin that could be blocking in the body's normal cooling process. Obese individuals tend to get sweaty with their every move. And that could be one of the reasons why they would rather be a couch potato - especially if they don't like their body to sweat too much. However, they should take this fact as a motivation, knowing that they can easily lose weight if they are really up to it. With beads of sweat forming with their simplest move, it only shows that they can burn fat fast if only they try.

However, other factors to excessive sweating like genetics is a little too hard to resolve. In fact, there might not be a solution for such a problem. But then again, the advancement in today's medical science is making sure that every health concern, regardless if it's major or minor, can be treated accordingly. Right now, there are different ways to treat excessive sweating. There are even some surgical methods developed to cure it.

To know if you're suffering from hyperhidrosis, it is best that you assess your condition well. If you are with somebody, try to compare your sweat with them. Is it relatively the same amount? Or is it obvious that you have excreted twice as much? Having a point of comparison is a good way to determine if your body sweat is within normal parameters or if it is already excessive.

Observing yourself is the best way to know if your have hyperhidrosis. Sweating for apparently no reason at all is a condition that you should be concerned about. Also, if you tend to sweat profusely due to anxiety, fear, and anger, then you do have some behavioral problems to address as well.

To know which method of treatment is right for you, you can consult a doctor or any qualified health expert. He should be able to tell you what causes your problem so you can try avoiding it. It is also possible for him to prescribe cures, both natural and commercial, to help you in your condition.

However, prevention is always the better solution for excessive sweating. People who are prone to sweating too much should make sure that they help improve their situations by wearing the right set of clothes every time. Taking a bath, practicing good hygiene, and using cooling devices to prevent sweating are good ways to prevent the problem.
