Bad Breath Can Be More Dangerous Than It First Appears To Be

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , , , , , , ,

You will most certainly have bad breath if you suffer from active gum disease (bleeding gums), or if you are dieting successfully. Normally you will have diminished salivary flow and be prone to bad breath if you are over 55 years of age, or if you take antidepressants, birth control, sinus, or heart medicines. Others who smoke or drink alcohol will have bad breath too.

A study done by Anne Bosy, co-founder of the Fresh Breath Clinic in Toronto, found that most people with bad breath do not have gum disease. Instead, she found that sulphur-producing bacteria live at the back of the tongue, bedding down under plaque and mucous. These bacteria are a source of halitosis.

If there is a white film covering the tongue then you can be sure that there are millions of bacteria resident there.

Because there is an oxygen-poor environment at the rear of the tongue, the gram negative anaerobic bacteria can thrive nicely there and provide a constant supply to the mouth. Hence it is practically impossible to remove all the bacteria from the mouth.

These anaerobic bacteria are B. forsythus, T. denticola, A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. intermedia and P.gingivalis. They are known to be active in periodontal diseases.

Not only does this plaque on the tongue result in bad breath smells, but gum diseases and tooth problems such as gingivitis and periodontitis readily follow.

85% of all cases of bad breath originate in the mouth, and 90% of those are caused by the coatings on the tongue. It has been shown previously in various studies that the major components of halitosis are the mercaptans and hydrogen sulphide.

Studies into human behaviour have shown that nobody likes to let anybody else know that they have bad breath, not even their closest partners - usually out of fear of embarrassing them.

Fairly shocking news just released connects the bacteria in our mouths to heart disease and other serious diseases.

Under the coating on the tongue are several bacteria, and one of them is the main actor in periodontal disease. When the gums are damaged or bleeding, this bacteria get into the bloodstream and travels through the body. It is thought that it may be causing damage even to the heart.

Several of the bacteria in the mouth have been shown to enter the bloodstream through the gums and cause blood clots and damage heart muscle tissue. Some recent studies have shown that one particular bacteria called Clostridium perfingens, which is very often found in the oral cavity, is suspected of being the major culprit.

Researchers claim that there may be a direct connection between gum diseases in pregnant women and low birth weights of their offspring. They say it could be an effect of the toxic by-products of the bacteria.

Some studies are showing a connection betweem diabetes and periodontal disease.

Bacteria found in the mouth can end up in the airways and increase the risk of complications associated with chronic lung conditions and respiratory disease.

A lot of toxins and metabolic waste is removed from the body while we sleep through the tongue coating, as many people are aware, but do we consider the fact that much of this can be re-ingested with our very first meal of the day!

Metabolism Boosting Four Biggest Myths

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

The Four Biggest Myths Of Boosting Your Metabolism.

Myth #1: Diet Pills
Myth #2: Drop Caloric Intake
Myth #3: Low Intensity Workouts
Myth #4: Too Much Focus

1. Diet Pills--The problem here is that many makers of diet pills offer claims that simply aren’t realistic; and if you read the fine-print of most of these advertisements, you’ll see that they really are too good to be true. Little notes like the claims made in this advertisement are not typical and should be enough of a wake-up call to realize that there’s more to the story.

In some cases, diet pills can help boost metabolism temporarily. This, however, can be risky and generally should not be done without a doctor’s ok. Unfortunately, people can become somewhat addicted to diet pills, and this can lead to disaster.

2. Drop Your Caloric Intake--The thing to remember is that the body’s ability to lose weight is not controlled by calories. Calories are the input. The real control mechanism is that famous concept that you’ve become very familiar with: metabolism.

So with that being said, cutting down your caloric intake to, say, 1000 calories a day isn’t necessarily going to help you lose weight; because it doesn’t necessarily change your metabolism.

3. Low Intensity Workouts--It’s fair to say that any exercise is better than no exercise. So if you lead a sedentary lifestyle, then even walking around your block for 10 minutes a day is going to do something positive for your body and its metabolism.

Low intensity workouts simply don’t lead to a faster metabolism; they can’t. Remember, metabolism is a process.

If you don’t achieve a high-intensity workout, your body can’t tap into itself to achieve catabolism; it won’t need to.

4. Too Much Focus--Speeding up your metabolism and achieving your weight loss goals involves a certain degree of focus; after all, there are a lot of things competing for your attention (including those delicious desserts!), and you certainly need to be able to keep your eye on the goal in order to maintain your program.

Yet sometimes too much focus can be a bad thing; and some dieters understand this all too well. Remember: speeding up your metabolism is a holistic effort that includes exercise, lifestyle, and diet changes.

Focusing on only one of these at the expense of the others (either one or both) can be detrimental. In fact, in some cases, it can be counter-productive.

4 Signs You Should Eat More to Lose Weight

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by: Shannon Tani

Did you know that eating too little can actually prevent you from losing weight? It's true. When you eat below a certain amount of calories (this level is different for everyone), your body enters "starvation mode" and tries to hold on to all the fat that it has so that it can survive.

The good news is that by eating more food, you can fire up your metabolism and start losing weight again.

Here are four signs that you should start eating more:

  1. You have a lot of weight to lose. The higher your weight, the more calories your body burns just to function on a daily level. A good rule of thumb is to figure that [your body weight X 10] is the number of calories that your body needs to maintain its current weight. If you want to lose weight, you should subtract 500 from this number and that is how many calories you should eat in a day.
  2. You have a high muscle mass. Muscle burns more energy than fat, so if you have a higher muscle mass, then you may need to eat more calories to keep your body fueled.
  3. You exercise a lot. If you exercise hard for an hour a day, five times a week, then you may need more calories. Strenuous exercise burns a lot of calories and if you are not eating enough to maintain this level of activity, you're body will think that it's starving (even if you actually are eating) and will try to keep its fat for energy.
  4. You've hit a plateau. If you've been successfully losing weight by eating right and exercising and your weight loss suddenly comes to a screeching halt, you may need more food. Your body has gotten used to this level of food and activity. Try eating an extra 200 calories a day and see if that doesn't fire up your metabolism.

Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle is one of the most comprehensive books on nutrition, weight loss, and muscle gain that I have read. It contains much more detailed information about eating enough food to lose weight. To read my full review of it, Please visit Better Off Fat.

Shannon Tani is a former fattie, who weighed over 220lbs. She has currently lost over 70lbs. One day she realized that people would rather hear dieting advice from someone who's "been there, done that" than a boring old doctor who's never been fat a day in his life. So she started the website Better Off Fat to share her experiences and ideas.

Pregnancy Skincare - Discover The Powerful Healing Capabilities Of Natural Skincare Products

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By: Mark

There are a number of concerns a woman has during pregnancy including various pregnancy skincare issues she may encounter. During her pregnancy, she must not only be cautious about what she eats, but she must also avoid certain bad health habits such as drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking. It is important that pregnant women practice a healthy lifestyle, not only to maintain her own health, but also to maintain the health of her unborn baby.

Most pregnant women apply a number of different cosmetics to their skin, hair and nails each day, however they should always take into account the ingredients contained in these products. Some of these commercial products may contain coal tar derivatives, talc, synthetic colors and fragrances, propylene glycol (which is not a problem if it is naturally derived), and the synthetic preservatives methyl and propyl parabens. In addition, some commercial toothpaste may contain toxic ingredients and should be avoided by women during pregnancy.

Most women use cosmetics to not only enhance their appearance, but also to highlight certain features of their face, such as their eyes, lips, and facial skin. Many women use soaps, moisturizers and toners on a daily basis in order to help maintain the integrity of their skin. Additionally, they may also use cosmetics in the form of blushes, mascaras, lipstick and lip gloss.

A particular class of chemicals found in cosmetics is phthalates. These chemicals are often found in nail polish and other skin care products that contain fragrances. Whenever possible, these chemicals (phthalates) should be avoided. Consumers can do this by using only those skin care products that are chemical free and organically derived. Avoiding these chemicals is especially important during pregnancy as there have been claims that they may affect reproduction and possibly damage the heart and lungs. If you use conventional cosmetics, you may wish to have a blood test to determine if you have phthalates in your system. You should also consider switching from conventional cosmetics to mineral cosmetics and organic cosmetics. This simple change will help you avoid the harsh synthetic chemical colorants found in these products.

During pregnancy, women are often faced with unique pregnancy skincare conditions. There are a number of different treatment options available for treating these conditions. One skincare issue that may arise is a condition called Herpes gestationis.

A major symptom of Herpes gestationis is abdominal blisters. When we hear about herpes, we normally associate it with fever blisters found on the lips or genital area. It should be noted that Herpes gestationis is not related to herpes simplex. H. gestationis may develop at the end of pregnancy and will eventually subside after delivery.

As with all skin and health conditions encountered during pregnancy it is important to discuss with your family physician any and all side effects associated with any pharmaceutical or natural medicines that you are taking since some of them may cause harm to your unborn baby. The medications that normally are prescribed for Herpes gestationis are corticosteroids. The side effects associated with these medications include: increased blood pressure and the possibility of hypoadrenalism in the child. It is important to weigh the risks and benefits of this treatment against the skin condition. You should also ask your doctor is there are safer treatment options that you can use. It should be noted that even though this skin affliction does occur during pregnancy, it is a rare condition.

Occasionally, hair loss may occur in women during pregnancy. Fortunately for most women, their hair will grow back naturally. Some doctors may prescribe multivitamin and mineral supplements to help facilitate hair growth. Women should consult with the doctor if their hair does not begin to grow back.

The onset of psoriasis may be noticed by some pregnant woman. Psoriasis is not contagious and will improve for some women and worsen for others during pregnancy. While there are different forms of this skin condition, the most common type is characterized by red patchy skin with white or silver scales. Fortunately, this type of psoriasis is usually located on the parts of the body that can be concealed by clothing; however, it can also appear on the scalp. There are a number of different medications that can be used to treat this condition, but some doctors advise their patients not to use these prescription medications during pregnancy.

It is often because of these dangerous side effects that many people today are taking a more holistic approach to their health care needs. The use of certain natural compounds has been shown to be beneficial in treating psoriasis, and it does this without the harmful side effects that may take place with chemical products and medications.

Aloe Vera is widely known and has been used for centuries as a healing agent for the skin. When applied topically it helps soothe the pain from a burn. This botanical has been tested on patients suffering from psoriasis, and a topical cream was shown to be helpful in treating this skin condition. Other aloe preparations were applied to those patients who suffered from plaque psoriasis, but those compounds did not produce any better results when compared to the treatment administered to the placebo group. It should be noted that there are several species of aloe, and it may be true that certain species of this plant produce more beneficial medicinal properties than other varieties of this plant. In order to evaluate the true effectiveness of this botanical compound, more scientific studies are needed to determine its value in treating psoriasis.

The results of these studies conducted on the aloe vera were published in the Tropical Medicine and International Health Journal.

Many of us like spicy foods and have added cayenne pepper to our foods to give it an extra kick. This spice has been added to topical creams and a study has confirmed its effectiveness in reducing the scaling and red patchy skin encountered by those suffering from psoriasis. Discuss with your family physician if this natural food substance can be added to your pregnancy skin care treatment program to help control or possibly alleviate this skin condition.

The above are only a few of the pregnancy skin care issues that women must face. It is always best to discuss your problems with your gynecologist or family physician and follow their advice. Each and every day, there are more and more pharmaceutical and natural compounds being researched to help treat the various skin care conditions that arise during pregnancy. As we have seen, the use of natural botanical compounds has been shown to be helpful in treating some of these conditions. A qualified holistic physician can prescribe the most appropriate treatment choice for your needs.

Keep in mind that some herbal compounds have drug-like effects, and they may or may not be suited for you during pregnancy. Utilizing the services of a qualified alternative physician can help combine the best of western and complimentary medicine in order to help relieve the discomfort and unsightly appearance of the skin conditions that occur during pregnancy.

Herniated Lumbar Disc - Care For lumbar herniated disk

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by Franchis Adam

The spine is made up of a series of bones connecting to each other commonly known as the vertebrae. The lumbar disc acts as a cushion between each bone of the vertebra, made up of strong connecting tissue. The lumbar disc has a hard exterior with a soft gel inside. As a person gets older typically this fluid is diminished, thus making it a not so effective cushion for the spine. Further to this, the center of the disc may also become herniated or, in other words, displaced. A lumbar herniated disc usually occurs to the two discs from the bottom of the lumbar spine.

A lumbar herniated disc can put pressure on the spinal nerves causing the condition known as sciatica. A lumbar herniated disc like other types of herniated disc is characterized by numbness, weakness, tingling and/or pain in the leg. Currently approximately 1 to 2 percent of individuals between the ages of thirty and fifty suffer from Sciatica. This is a frightening statistic, and one that demands attention. Back pain may also be caused by a lumbar herniated disc but if this is not accompanied by pain in the leg, then there may a different cause.

The good news for sufferers of a lumbar herniated disc, is that surgery is not required in eighty to ninety percent of cases. Normally, the physician will recommend non-surgical options to treat the lumbar herniated disc such as a short rest period, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, physical therapy, exercises, and injection therapy.

Non-surgical treatments aim to reduce disc and nerve irritation and improve the patient's physical condition in order to protect the patient's spine and enhance general function. An organized treatment and care program combining a number of the aforementioned treatments is effective in treating the majority of lumbar herniated disc patients.

After observing the recommended period of non-surgical treatment, if the pain still persists with the lumbar herniated disc, and hinders the patients from normal activities even after the completion of non-operative treatments, then the physician may recommend surgery as a last resort.

It is important to note that the patient may not regain complete leg strength with surgery but it can serve to prevent further weakness in the legs as well as relieve pain. In fact, surgical treatment is typically recommended in order to relieve leg pain but it is not as successful as relief for the back pain itself.

After surgery, you should rely on your doctor's advice in terms of which activities are suitable. Obviously this will depend on the severity of the lumbar herniated disc The first step after surgery is to take basic steps to see if there are any lingering pain issues. In most cases patients are able to go home on the same day or within 24 hours of the lumbar herniated disc surgery. The following activities should be avoided by patients following the surgery: bending forward, lifting heavy objects, sitting for a prolonged time and driving. It is advisable to follow a rehabilitation program recommended by your physician or hospital. You doctor or physician will be able to assist in determining which exercises and rehabilitation methods will be most effective in reducing the chance of the lumbar herniated disc returning.

Secret to Losing All Your Post-Pregnancy Weight

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , , ,

There is a way to lose the weight after having kids – and it doesn't have to take hours out of your day or mean that you can't eat anything ever again. In fact, 15 minutes, a couple times per week may be enough to get you the results that you're looking for and make you happy with yourself and confident again.

Hard to believe, isn't it?

Imagine how hard it was for my wife to believe me when I told her. You can believe that she's always been my toughest customer. But, when she finally did give these exercise techniques a chance, she loved the results. Here's what she had to say:

My name is Tamara Kauppinen and I had my fifth child (that's right, fifth!) in October of 2005. I was 34 years old and after having Keion, I, like every other mom, wanted to lose the baby weight that I put on during pregnancy (which by the way was 43 pounds). I am a fairly small person to begin with so this was a lot of weight to put on for me.

Before I go on, let me tall you that after having my fourth child I worked hard, ate somewhat healthy and got down to a size 2 and some 4's. When I say that I worked hard, I mean I WORKED HARD. I got up 5 days a week at 4:30 am to get to the gym to get in my 1 1/2 hours at the gym. Rain or shine, and even during a February snowstorm where I ended up in the ditch I dragged myself in to work out. I did weights for about 40 minutes and the rest of the time I spent on the cardio machines. I rotated through the different cardio machines at the gym; the treadmill (which I HATE running), the elliptical, the stairclimber. I got so that I could do 60 minutes of hard intense cardio. I totally saw the results and really didn't have to curb my eating habits. (I am a very much a chips and salsa girl. Anything with salt and I am in heaven!)

So right before I got pregnant with my 5th baby, I weighed about 117 pounds and I am 5'7'. I was fit if I do say so myself. I tried sticking with my workout program once I got pregnancy, but it's hard to stick with something so intense! Especially the 4:30 am thing, I just wanted to sleep.

Anyway, I'm sure that if you have gotten this far you are wondering why I am writing this and it is NOT to brag trust me! After babe number five, I just still couldn't get motivated to eat healthy again and lose the weight, plus there was no way that I was going to get back up at 4:30 am after being up all night with an infant. I decided that I was just going to have to be 15 pounds heavier and that I would have to learn to live with it.

Then I listened to a "wise" man and tried a different type of workout. That man turned out to be my husband, Tim. Now, if you're like me, the last person you want to admit is right is your hubbie. So, I ignored his advice for a long time. Even though he had been a successful athlete and coach for years, there was no way I was going to give him the satisfaction of being able to say "I told you so".

But, eventually I got so frustrated with myself and the lack of results I was getting from "regular" cardio that I decided to give his way a shot. And (for only the second time that I'm willing to admit it to him), he was right.

What Tim suggested was to add more intensity to my workouts. To include short, intense bursts in my workouts – sprint interval training, he called it. More specifically Tim told me about his favorite type of interval training – running hill sprints.

Remember that I HATE running, but I gave it a try (without telling my dear husband, of course). But seriously, after one workout, I was hooked. All it has taken for me to lose all of my baby weight and stick to my not so great diet has been hill sprinting. I started wearing the clothes I wanted to – and was excited to shop in all my favorite stores again.

For me the best thing about these workouts is that it takes only 15 minutes of my time, a day and two per week. I saw results within one week and I could still eat what I wanted and was losing flab! Plus, it's about as close to free as you can get. All you need is yourself and some sort of hill or stairs - and it doesn't matter what kind of shape you're in now ( because you can adjust this training to any fitness level).

Are there other ways to get back in shape? Sure, I am not saying that working out hard at the gym isn't worth it. But I know that I haven't found a more efficient, more effective way to blowtorch the blubber off than by running these sprints.

If you're a busy mom like me, with limited time but the desire to get back into pre-baby weight (no matter how many kids you've had), then I strongly suggest you give uphill fitness training a chance. Believe me, you're going to love your results. Just don't tell my husband that he was right.

What is Trans Fat?

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

by Benjamin Glenn

Trans fat is the common name for a type of unsaturated fat with trans isomer fatty acids. Trans fats may be monounsaturated or polyunsaturated.

Trans fats are produced when liquid oil is made into a solid fat. This process is called hydrogenation. Trans fats act like saturated fats and can raise your cholesterol level. Trans fats are listed on the label, making it easier to identify these foods. Unless there is at least 0.5 grams or more of trans fat in a food, the label can claim 0 grams. If you want to avoid as much trans fat as possible, you must read the ingredient list on food labels. Look for words like hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil. Select foods that either do not contain hydrogenated oil or where a liquid oil is listed first in the ingredient list.

Most trans fats consumed today are industrially created by partially hydrgenating plant oils -- a process developed in the early 1900s and first commercialized as Crisco in 1911. ( Otherwise known as Lard) The goal of partial hydrogenation is to add hydrogen atoms to unsaturated fats, making them more saturated. These more saturated fats have a higher melting point making them attractive for baking, and extending their shelf-life

Unlike other dietary fats, trans fats are neither required nor beneficial for health. Eating trans fats increases the risk of coronary heart desease. For these reasons, health authorities worldwide recommend that consumption of trans fat be reduced to trace amounts. Trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are generally considered to be more of a health risk than those occurring naturally.

Sources of trans fat include:

Processed foods like snacks (crackers and chips) and
baked goods (muffins, cookies and cakes) with
hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil
Stick margarines
Shortening
Some fast food items such as french fries
Cholesterol

There you have it. Trans fat is just a pretty name for Lard, which has been around and clogging arteries for close to a century. It seems that the things that we enjoy the best are always the most dangerous to us.

If you can't put down those fries or chips, try to at least cut back on the amount that you consume. Your heart and arteries will thank you for it. Below is some information to think about while consuming that double burger you love so well.

Cancer: There is no scientific consensus that consumption of trans fats significantly increases cancer risks across the board. However, one recent study has found connections between trans fat and prostate cancer.

Diabetes: There is a growing concern that the risk of type 2 diabetes increases with trans fat consumption Obesity: Research indicates that trans fat may increase weight gain and abdominal fat, despite a similar caloric intake. Although obesity is frequently linked to trans fat in the popular media, this is generally in the context of eating too many calories; there is no scientific consensus connecting trans fat and obesity.

Liver Dysfunction: Trans fats are metabolized differently by the liver than other fats and interfere with delta 6 desaturase. (Delta 6 desaturase is an enzyme involved in converting essential fatty acids to arachidonic acid and prostaglandis both of which are important to the functioning of cells.)

Infertility: One 2007 study found, "Each 2% increase in the intake of energy from trans unsaturated fats, as opposed to that from carbohydrates, was associated with a 73% greater risk of ovulatory infertility...".

Guidance for New Alzheimer’s Caregivers

ป้ายกำกับ:

Caring for a parent, spouse, sibling or other loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be a rewarding experience that builds your inner strength and character. Caregivers usually assume the care giving role out of love and a desire to help a family member in need. The selfless act of care giving is widely respected and will certainly make you a stronger and more confident in your ability to make a positive difference in another person’s life.

Usually, care giving begins with just helping out a family member, showing love and support by making his or her day a little easier. Alzheimer’s patients experience more severe symptoms with time, resulting in the need for increased care and supervision as time goes on. In time, the lifestyle associated with the “caregiver” role can sneak up on even the most active and driven caregiver. Though caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease brings with it numerous rewards, it is not uncommon for caregivers to find themselves overwhelmed at times as they strive to establish a harmonious balance between their own needs and the needs of their loved one.

An Alzheimer’s caregiver can become so consumed with the demands of caring for a loved one while upholding other daily responsibilities that his or her own health becomes neglected. The symptoms often experienced by full time Alzheimer’s caregivers, such as guilt, anger, exhaustion and depression, are so consistent and debilitating that they are collectively being referred to by some medical professionals as “caregiver syndrome.” Some experts suggest that simply acknowledging oneself as a “caregiver” and identifying with the role can lead a person to better deal with the responsibilities associated with caretaking. Realizing that care giving is not unlike taking on a second job can put caregivers in the proper mindset to provide the best care for their loved one with Alzheimer’s and for themselves.

As the world becomes more aware of the long term effects of caring for a loved one with dementia, more resources are becoming available to help caregivers effectively manage the responsibilities. Support groups and training programs for Alzheimer’s caregivers offer guidance that can lead to less stress for caregivers and delay the need to move their loved ones into professional full-time care.

If you have recently taken on the responsibility of being the primary caretaker for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to remain in tune with your own needs and emotions. You may feel angry or exhausted at times due to the unpredictable nature of Alzheimer’s disease. Realize that such emotions are common among Alzheimer’s caregivers, release yourself of any guilt caused by them and move on. Do not neglect taking time for yourself once in a while to regroup and relax. If your loved one requires constant supervision, have another friend or relative take over caretaking duties or take advantage of respite care at a local Alzheimer’s care facility so that you may create time for yourself. Establishing a balance between tending to your innate needs and those of your loved one will make you a better, more effective caregiver and affect a more positive environment for everyone involved.

The Best Foods To Be taken During Menopause

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

by Judy Wellsworth

As women age, their bodies gradually begin to change in response to the changes in their hormonal balances. When a woman has reached the end of her childbearing years, she is likely to experience a reduced interest in sex, the cessation of her menstrual cycle, and other physical symptoms like night sweats, hot flashes, and mood shifts.

The physical changes she experiences at the end of her reproductive life are brought on by the same hormones which were responsible for the puberty which signaled its beginning. And hormones, as chemicals naturally produced in the body, can be affected by the food a woman eats as she is undergoing menopause. There are foods which can aggravate the symptoms of menopause, and there are foods to be taken during menopause which can alleviate them. The foods to be taken during menopause ought to be as natural and unprocessed as possible.

Beware Of Your Supermarket The foods to be taken during menopause include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, organic if available, and plenty of whole grain cereals, breads, and pastas. The best way to find the foods to be taken during menopause is to restrict your grocery shopping to the aisles on the perimeter of your supermarket, because that is where the freshest, most nutritious foods are traditionally stocked.

Supermarkets almost universally place their sugary, salty, and high-fat snack foods on their interior aisles, and any list of the best foods to be taken during menopause is going to be noticeably lacking in those sorts of foods. The sugar and chemicals in those processed foods can have a profound effect on a menopausal woman's emotional state, and heighten her uncomfortable physical symptoms as well.

Water, Water, Water Another of the foods to be taken during menopause is water. Even though water is the chief ingredient of all vegetables and fruits, menopausal women will benefit greatly from consuming six to eight glasses of water throughout the day. By making water your beverage of choice at meal times, you will have no difficulty meeting the rest of your quota during the rest of the day.

Every woman who lives long enough will experience menopause. But those women who are prepared can, to a great extent, control the quality of their menopausal years. If you make an effort to eat mostly those foods to be taken during menopause, you will both reduce the severity of your menopausal symptoms and improve your overall health as well. While specific foods to be taken during menopause may differ depending on which expert is making recommendations, all of them will encourage you to eat fresh, vitamin and mineral rich fruits and vegetables, and drink plenty of clean water.

Why You Should Avoid Synthetic Hormones For Menopause Treatment

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Menopause can be a difficult time for a woman. The symptoms that accompany menopause can make life nearly unbearable, which leads many women to seek medication to alleviate these symptoms. The problem is that most of the commonly recommended drugs for menopause are made with synthetic hormones that can pose a variety of dangers for the people taking them.

These discomforts include:

Bloating
sexual dysfunction
possibly cancer

The following is an explanation of symptoms associated with menopause, a summary of the dangers, and the various benefits of natural menopause treatments.

Menopause strikes most women between the ages of 48-55 and brings with it hot flashes, night sweats, problems urinating, and discomfort during sexual activity. While most of these symptoms are merely annoying, some of them create a major disruption in the lifestyle of the women who suffer from them. Hot flashes are the most common and are often accompanied by headaches, nausea and heart palpitations (irregular heartbeats).

The problem with using synthetic or man-made hormones to treat the symptoms of menopause is that the body does not recognize the artificial hormones and will not readily absorb and accept the hormones. In fact your body may activity work against these artificial hormones, which will cause more problems with your body. Common results from using the synthetic hormones include weight gain and water retention, discomfort during sex or lack of sex drive, and may be a contributing factor for some cases of breast, uterine or ovarian cancer. This is mainly due to the fact that the body does not recognize the artificial hormones.

Additionally, these synthetic hormones are only designed to deal with the specific symptom whether it is:

hot flashes
water retention
insomnia

Therefore regard for the entire body or potential side effects are disregarded in the desire of these companies to create a medication that will target and control one single (or possibly two or three) symptom.

If synthetic hormones are so dangerous for menopausal women, why then do the drug companies use them? Simply so they can obtain a patent through the FDA that will allow them to better market their drugs. The regulations of the FDA do not allow drug manufactures to get a patent on natural materials, so the companies must use artificial substances in the making of their medications. So for the good of the drug companies, the general public is lead to buy potentially harmful drugs containing man-made hormones.

The alternative to synthetic hormones is products containing natural hormones derived from plants that your body will recognize as natural and readily absorb the products. With natural hormones, many of the undesirable side effects are eliminated. Better yet, the natural hormones work to deal with a variety of symptoms of menopause, instead of just the few that synthetic treatments affect. Although you won't find FDA approval on natural treatments, you can find medical professionals and written reports of the benefits of naturally produced hormones on women dealing with symptoms of menopause.

Fractionating Laser - Does What the Fraxel Laser does?

ป้ายกำกับ: ,

By: Francis Adam

You see ads and offers for whiz-bang fractionating lasers and wonder—do they mean Fraxel? Are they the same thing? Unless you ask and find out it’s a Fraxel, it’s not.

Doctors and spas all over are noticing the increased interest in cosmetic procedures, and many laser companies have responded to the demand. They’ve made it easy for anybody to offer what sounds like the latest and greatest in technology.

This isn’t surprising—because the genuine Fraxel laser does provide a remarkable new technology for reversing the effects of age and sun damage on the skin. Working below the skin’s surface layer, which it leaves intact, the Fraxel targets only certain cells (this is the “fractionating” part). Perfectly computer-controlled and evenly distributed, the laser penetrates to thousands of tiny packets of damaged collagen and eliminates these cells—and this stimulates the skin to replace them by producing new, fresh collagen and elastic tissue.

The result? Smoother skin texture, reduced pore size, toned and tightened skin. The Fraxel laser erases brown spots, including melasma (the “mask of pregnancy”) and smoothes wrinkles. It’s the leading treatment for acne scars. And, because of its technological sophistication, a Fraxel laser treatment involves no recovery time.

So—is it any wonder some doctors want you to think their “fractionating laser” does what the Fraxel laser does?

A true skin expert will invest in the real deal—such as the actual Fraxel SR 1500. Those who wish to take shortcuts will buy what is essentially a “box” with many handpieces available. This saves them from having to invest in the lasers these handpieces imitate. To try to imitate the Fraxel, they’ll buy a “fractionating handpiece.” Then they’ll claim this is just as good and produces the same results.

Well, imitation is a form of flattery. Unfortunately for the consumer, these devices simply can’t produce the same results. In fact, sometimes they’ll produce circles and stripes—or worse yet, burns. Many operate at wavelengths that experts don’t consider fractional at all.

The true Fraxel can be individualized to each client’s needs, and delivers safe, uniform, and outstanding results. But there’s no quick and easy route for doctors to use this advanced technology: specialized training is the only way to learn how best to tailor the Fraxel laser treatment for each client.

It’s in your interest as a consumer to make sure you’re getting both the genuine state-of-the-art technology, and the knowledgeable and properly trained professional to operate it. A Board Certified Dermatologist will understand your skin’s needs and the best treatment. Be sure to ask—and make sure you’re getting a genuine Fraxel laser treatment.

Bad Breath, Oral Health and Weight Loss

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

Alien

We dieters out there get so engrossed in the fight or struggle to lose weight at all cost. But one thing and perhaps the last thing some of us never envisaged might happen to us doing this process of losing weight is developing a “BAD BREATH”

Yes, you read right. I’m no scientist nor am I a nutritionist, but one thing I do know and I’m sure some of you out there will attest to is that, some diet will actually give you bad breath whilst losing weight.

Regardless of how much mouthwash you use; how often you brush your teeth. The bottom fact is, this bad breath originates from your stomach and not your mouth. I’m sure we’ve all heard of the saying, “Treat the cause and not the symptom”, or is it the other way around? Well, I’m sure you get the drift.

So, how did I develop this bad breath in the first place, I hear you ask? Let me make one thing clear before I carry on. The bad breath I’m referring to here is attributed to anyone aspiring to lose weight. That is, if you’ve just embarked on losing weight and you’ve suddenly noticed that you’ve developed this bad breath.

However, if you’re not on diet of any kind but then developed bad breath, I’ll suggest you consult your physician or your family doctor, as you may have other symptoms other than just diet problems. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s move on.

Back to how you suddenly developed this bad breath? I’m sure we’ve all heard of the famous “Atkins Diet”, but if not, I’ll explain what it is in a nutshell, without wasting the time of we that already know what it is. It’s simply a diet of complete protein, you simply eat pure protein all day long, hence excluding carbohydrate altogether. Well, some people consume very little of carbohydrate anyway.

Now, eating just pure protein like, chicken (either roasted, fried or boiled), steak, fried eggs, etc and nothing else do work, but the main problem is, pure protein in the gut without or little carbohydrate or any other minerals is what causes the bad breath. So the bad breath is just the gas originating or escaping from your stomach during the digestive process via the mouth and also via the other end – I’m sure you know what end I’m referring.

I’ve met most people on Atkins Diet, and they’ll be the first to admit and tell you how embarrassed they are sometime with their bad breath, but most will tell you it’s worth carrying around a bad breath as long as they continue to lose weight.

There you have it. To avoid bad breath whilst losing weight, or envisaging it, lay off pure Diet of protein, mix your food up a bit, and above all, eat lot of FRUITS. Now, that’s a Bad Breath killer right there.

Lose Your Belly by Improving Your Posture

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

By: Li Ming Wong

Everyone knows the children's song about the leg bone being connected to the hip bone, but how many people really take it to heart? Obviously, everyone knows that the leg bone does in fact attach to the hip bone; that's not the point. Probably not many people really stop to think about how related and interconnected the parts of the human body really are. In an illustration of this point, the back and abdominal muscles are all affected by one another as they form a girdle around the lower torso. It stands to reason, then, that your posture affects how your tummy looks, and the strength of your abdominal muscles affects your posture.

Stand Up Straight

This first step to losing a belly is to stand and sit up straight. This actually has a few different effects. First of all, slouching accentuates belly fat, so simply sitting up will make you appear slimmer. Second, proper posture help improves the strength of your back, which of course makes it easier to maintain proper posture longer. Third, poor posture leads to back pain, which makes abdominal exercises difficult. Having good posture will make it easier for you to work out your abdominal muscles and whittle down that belly. Lastly, a nice straight posture enhances blood flow throughout the body, particularly to the legs and lower back, both of which are involved in many abdominal exercises. So, if you are trying to lose a belly, the first step is to simply sit and stand up as straight as possible as often as possible. Do that, and you are already on your way!

Back Extension

For the reader familiar with the crunchless crunch, this move will seem similar but backwards. For this exercise, you will need to start by lying on your abdominal with your forehead on the floor. You may use a mat or towel to cushion your pelvis and head. Position your arms by your sides, palms up. Contract your back muscles to lift your torso off the floor. Hold the contraction briefly, then release and slowly lower your torso back down to the floor. Repeat for an entire set.

The next part of this exercise begins by extended your arms out above your head (picture a superhero flying through the air). Now lift your legs off the floor simultaneously while keeping your head and arms held in place. Try to imagine your legs growing longer as you are lifting them up. Hold your legs up briefly, then slowly lower them back to the floor.

Doing these two things will help you strengthen your back and correct your posture, which are great first steps to losing an unwanted belly. You will also want to continue working on your back muscles and other core muscles, such as the transverse and rectus abdominus. Abdominalexercises that work the core will help you straighten up your posture, lose belly fat, and gain muscle tone in both your back and tummy. As with any workout routine, be sure to consult a professional before beginning and always warm up properly to avoid injury.

Chromortherapy – Healing by Color

ป้ายกำกับ: , , ,

Chromotherapy is a form of healing based on the principle that all illness is manifested in a disturbed energy field (giving off light), and by the proper application of color to this energy field, a correction can be achieved, and with that correction comes healing.

Experienced and well trained chromotherapists use both color and light to balance the energy fields, and claim to effect a reversal of negative reactions manifesting in our composite physical, mental, and spiritual make up.

Although not yet proven by the modern scientific method, the chromotherapists believe that their methods are indeed scientific, and instruments to verify the results are not yet manifest. Furthermore, chromotherapists adhere to the belief that colors do indeed bring about identifiable emotional reactions in people.

The treatment in chromotherapy is in the application of color and light to specific areas on the body. The therapists believe that colors have both positive and negative effects on the body’s energy fields; with some specific colors in specified doses can effect the actual healing.

The therapists use a whole range of color carriers and emitters such as gemstones, fabrics, prisms, light wands, and colored water in baths.

Endometriosis: The Fear of the Unknown

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , ,

By: aseya

Every month, many young women experience an event that is unique to the female human species: the monthly period. Aside from pregnancy and giving birth, the monthly period is one of the most intricate, memorable, and irritating experiences for a woman. Menstruation, or period, is a woman's monthly bleeding. It is the preparation of a woman's body for pregnancy. Without a pregnancy, the uterus sheds its lining. The blood that is shed includes tissue from inside the uterus or womb. The blood passes out of the body through the vagina. Periods usually start at age 12 and continue until menopause, at about 50. There are certain changes that happen during a woman's menstrual period. Some women become irritated, depressed, and emotional. Physical changes also happen before and during menstruation like having swollen breasts, feeling bloated, head aches, and back pains. However, there are women who suffer severe pain during their menstrual period that could be a symptom for endometriosis.

Endometriosis is not always accompanied by symptoms. But in cases where it does, a woman usually suffers from what is called unusually painful periods or dysmenorrhea. Endometriosis is a disorder in which bits of tissue from the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grow inside a woman's body, outside of the uterus. The uterus is a hollow organ within a woman's abdomen where a fertilized egg is implanted and develops into a baby normally over a period of nine months. During the menstrual cycle, some cells pass outside the uterus and implant themselves in the pelvis, ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines, and even in the lungs. The misplaced bits of the endometrial tissue can cause pain and irregular bleeding. It can also affect a woman's ability to become pregnant.

Endometriosis is diagnosed through physical examination. Occasionally, during a recto-vaginal exam, the doctor can feel nodules or endometrial implants behind the uterus and along the ligaments that are attached to the pelvic wall. At other times, no nodules are felt, but the examination itself causes unusual pain or discomfort. A doctor may also suspect endometriosis from a woman's symptoms or from a pelvic exam. Laparoscopy is a short surgical procedure performed through a very tiny incision in the abdomen. A laparoscope, a pencil-thin instrument is inserted into the incision gives the physician a clear view of the inside of the abdominal cavity on a television monitor.

Endometriosis can also be cause of woman's infertility. It is estimated that 40 to 50 percent of infertile women may have endometriosis. Endometriosis may be related to infertility in several ways. It is possible that scar tissue from endometriosis can form around the ovary and restrict the available surface area of the ovary for egg release. Adhesions affecting the fallopian tubes may interfere with their ability to pick up an egg released by an ovary and transport it to the uterus. Occasionally, endometriosis will form inside the fallopian tube, resulting in blockage and making fertilization impossible. Women who experience deep pain during intercourse may choose to have intercourse less often, thus reducing the likelihood of becoming pregnant. In some women, endometriosis causes no symptoms or mild symptoms and does not need to be treated at all. However, untreated endometriosis can continue to worsen, so these women should continue to have regular examinations to monitor the condition. If endometriosis is causing symptoms or is interfering with a woman's ability to become pregnant, several treatment options are available like medication, surgery or hysterectomy. The precise cause of endometriosis is unknown. There are certain steps that a woman can take to help prevent endometriosis or keep it from becoming worse. A woman who experience abdominal pain especially before the start of her period should see her physician. A woman with reproductive organ problems that obstruct menstrual flow should consider surgery. Endometriosis is associated with infertility, therefore women at risk for endometriosis may want to have children before their late 30s. Still, early diagnosis offers the best chance of effective treatment so women can stop wondering and suffering from their fear of the unknown.

This article discusses the condition a lot of women are suffering, endometriosis which can also cause infertility. This article describes the condition, possible treatment and symptoms.

The Japanese Secret To Health and Longevity

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , , , ,

Arguably, the Japanese and Koreans, are way ahead of most western doctors on neutralization and flushing acid wastes from the body. Oriental doctors have had wonderful results and use alkaline water successfully for many ailments including reverse aging.

Scientist Sang Whang explains everything in his book "Reverse Aging" (a must read). He explains why the west is slow on this technology in that very little Japanese research is translated into English. In contrast much western research is translated into Japanese. He explains:

"Here is the simple process of aging. Every living cell within our body creates waste products. The nutrients from our food are delivered to each cell and they burn with oxygen to provide energy for us to live. The burned nutrients are the waste products. The food that is either good or bad for you is determined by the amount and quality of the wastes produced: toxic, acid, alkaline, etc. Most of our cells go through metabolism and old dead cells become waste products. "

"These waste products must be discharged from our body. In fact, our body tries its best to dispose of them through urine and perspiration. Virtually all waste products are acidic; that is why urine is acidic and skin surface is also acidic. The problem is that, due to several reasons, our body cannot get rid of 100% of the waste products it produces. "

"The main reason for this is our lifestyle. We stay up late and get up early. We do not take time to rest; some of us work more than one job. We, therefore, spend more time producing waste products than processing them. "

"The second reason is food. Most of the food we like is mainly acidic. Acidic food does not necessarily mean that it tastes acidic, but that the wastes produced are acidic. Grains and meats are mainly acidic; fruits and vegetables are alkaline. Citric fruits may taste acidic but they are considered to be alkaline because they contain alkaline minerals. "

"The third reason is our environment. More healthy cells are killed by pollutants in the air, water and soil than the natural deaths of cells caused by normal metabolism. Thus, more wastes products are created. "

"The question is: "What happens to those non-disposed acidic waste products?" The answer is simple. These waste products become solid wastes, such as, cholesterol, fatty acid, uric acid, kidney stones, urates, phosphates, sulfate etc., and unknown to us they accumulate and build up somewhere within our body. This accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes within the our body is the aging process. "

"Alkaline neutralizes acid. Drinking alkaline water helps our body dissolve acid wastes and makes it easier for the body to dispose of them safely since the accumulation of acid wastes is aging, the reduction of acid wastes is reverse aging. Alkaline water is not a medicine to cure any disease. However if consumed regularly, alkaline water gradually reduces the accumulated acid wastes. As a result of acid reduction, there are many reports of natural health improvement in Japan."

Ionization is simple and natural. The objective of an Ionizer is to duplicate the tumbling waters of mountain streams and waterfalls. This generates an electrical charge similar to electrolysis, which generates negative ions. These in turn create alkaline water. People drinking mountain alkaline water are known to have less disease and greater longevity. Negative ions allow inorganic minerals to be easily absorbed by the body. At the same time, quality Ionizers have an efficient, activated charcoal filter, which removes chlorine, bacteria, heavy metals and other pollutants from tap water, whilst retaining and concentrating beneficial minerals.

A daily intake of eight glasses of alkaline water helps your body combat free radicals and to neutralize and wash out acid wastes.

The sad story of the hysterical uterus

ป้ายกำกับ: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

There has not been a scientifically definitive physiology of female anatomy until quite recently but strange images from its ambiguous history still haunt the common imagination and impact on women's self image. None is stranger than the female womb.

An anatomical "reality" that persisted in Western medical lore since ancient Greece was that the female uterus becomes displeased and displaced, and wanders through the body, negatively influencing the brain (I kid you not!). "Hysteria" is derived from the Greek word for uterus.

In a fit of fury the female uterus went travelling through the body, causing all manner of emotional disturbances – hence hysteria, hysterical – and hysterectomy.

The mental condition of hysteria afflicted legions of women of all ages throughout the patriarchal centuries, and was considered the most common disease after fever. In menopause, specifically, "the belief was that the failure to menstruate caused the uterus to travel around the body, eventually negatively influencing the brain".(Louis Banner In Full Flower)

The descriptions of hysterical patients painted a terrible caricature of the feminine. Old treatments included bed rest, binding, beating, purging, bloodletting, and, in worse cases, hysterectomy and/or clitoridectomy.

A kinder treatment evolved in the 19th century, when hysteria became a veritable epidemic, especially in the white middle classes. The doctor massaged the genitals until there was a healing convulsion and moist spasms (an orgasm by any other name), which relieved the patient for a while – until the next appointment. Hysteria was considered chronic and incurable, requiring ongoing treatment.

Electric vibrators were developed in the mid 19th century to help the overworked doctors and ease the hysterical women. They were even marketed to women at home for self-treatment, and were advertised in consumer catalogues and magazines. (There were vibrators in the house before vacuum cleaners.) However, by 1930 vibrators had gone underground, and were not openly advertised again until they re-emerged as sex toys in the 1960s. (This is according to Duana R Anderson in The wondering Uterus & A Brief History of the Vibrator)

The treatment of hysteria was taken over by psychology, and Freud pretty much evolved his world-shattering theories based on his work with hysterical (and frigid) women. And, well, we should be grateful for that.

He explained hysteria as the physical and psychological expression of inner psychic conflicts about sexuality. (Psyche turned into soma.) He explored his patients' personal history for clues, practised the talking cure (hugely innovative for its time), and developed psychoanalysis.

In my view, these legions of hysterical women were literally quivering with centuries of misogynist repressions, bursting to break out of the traumatized collective psyche; an epidemic erupting out of the universal unconscious where the goddess of myth lay buried.

In the good doctor's own words, "The character of hysterics shows a degree of sexual repression in excess of the normal quantity, an intensification of resistance against the sexual instinct (which we have already met with in the form of shame, disgust and morality), and what seems like an instinctive aversion on their part to any intellectual consideration of sexual problems.

"This trait … is not uncommonly screened by the existence of a second constitutional character present in hysteria, namely the predominant development of the sexual instinct. Psychoanalysis … reveals the pair of opposites by which it is characterised – exaggerated sexual craving and excessive aversion to sexuality."

Modern psychology succeeded in shifting hysteria from the realm of superstition. You could say it cured the mass hysteria; by 1952, it was officially declared a non-disease.

Freud introduced the concept of libido, the psychic energy expressed through sexuality that lies at the root of every living individual, and drives our desires and impulses. It can be repressed, expressed, controlled, or transmuted. But it exists – a priori!

Psychology helped to make conscious the compulsion of instincts hidden in the unconscious psyche. Basically ordinary people could now understand their behaviours and symptoms as expressions of underlying psychic/psychological conflict. Jung introduced the idea of the collective unconscious, which illuminated the universality of dream images and personal unconscious content.

The hysteric's subjugated sexuality was now the very stuff of the modern age, just waiting for the 1960s to burst out on to the world stage of the post-war baby boomers. The sexual liberation of that period was a huge and abrupt cultural change. Perhaps we forget now just how radical and fundamental it was - this sexual break from the past.

However, before we get too satisfied with this development, we need to ask ourselves why, with hysteria safely unplugged, we now have a virtual epidemic of hysterectomies, now the second most frequent surgery among American women, with caesarean section delivery being first. One in three women in the United States has had a hysterectomy by age 60!

If our hysterical uteruses are no longer travelling through our bodies affecting our brains, why are so many women having them cut out?

What Are The Root Causes Of Procrastination?

ป้ายกำกับ: , ,

by MJ Thompson

There are many causes of procrastination but the main two seem to be either psychological or physiological problems that a person is suffering from. Below we will look a little more closely at these two causes and some others as well.

1 Generally speaking Psychological reasons can vary greatly but is is usually possible to categorize them as follows:-

Anxiety, low self worth and a self defeating mentality. If you are faced with a task that needs to be completed some groups of people will fret over it. Others who suffer from low self worth will feel that they are not to complete the task due to lack of ability. The final group of people will believe that they will fail at the task even before they start.

Many people when faced with the task will dramatically over estimate the amount of work required to complete the task and this can very soon become a habit. Breaking a procrastination habit can be very difficult

2. Physiological. The causes of this type of procrastination seem to surround the role that the prefrontal cortex of the brain plays in a person's life. It is this area of the brain which controls our executive brain functions such as planning, the control of a person's impulses, their attention span or lack of it and is also there to help filter out those distractions which might otherwise stimulate the brain.

Physiological Reasons for procrastination can be caused by damage to this are of the brain. A lower than normal level of activation may also lead to physiological procrastination. A classic symptom of this kind of procrastination is the inability to filter out distractions and a distinct lack of organisation.

Others may procrastinate as they feel the work involved is too complicated and so the only way that a person can really deal with such a situation is as follows. They need to divide the task in hand up into smaller pieces and then perform each part one at a time, but they must provide themselves with a deadline for when they need to complete it by.

As you can see there are many causes of procrastination and it is wise to speak with either your doctor, therapist or psychiatrist in order to find out just what the underlying problem is. Sometimes procrastination can be cured by just reprogramming your subconscious that's where products like procrastination blaster come in
